In this insightful episode, we delve into the unique journey of Dan Ward, a Senior Principal Systems Engineer at MITRE, former Air Force Lieutenant Colonel, and author of four books, including The Simplicity Cycle and Fire. Dan reflects on his innovative career, spanning military service, systems engineering, and prolific writing, sharing lessons on catalyzing change and simplifying complexity.Dan's anecdotes illuminate key ideas: the transformative power of collaboration—“a catalyst by themselves is just powder in a jar”—and the importance of fostering a culture that celebrates learning from failure. He introduces the concept of “failure cake,” a practice his team developed to destigmatize failure by celebrating attempts and extracting lessons with humor and camaraderie.A firm believer in the power of writing, Dan calls on professionals to contribute to their fields, using his own journey as a guidepost. With practical insights and humor, he explains how writing a book is not just achievable but transformative, offering “book math” as a framework for aspiring authors.Whether it's through his viral article Build Droids, Not Death Stars, his “Green Pen Squad” initiative, or MITRE's free innovation toolkit, Dan exemplifies how leaders can simplify, inspire, and innovate. Tune in for actionable wisdom on leadership, storytelling, and building teams that thrive on collaboration and resilience.Check out "Build Droids Not Death Stars", an articule that Dan wrote that went viral and led to his first book, was inspired by his daughters.Check out The MITRE Innovation Toolkit to support innovation created by a group of Catalysts that Dan brought together.Original music by Lynz Floren.

Dr. Sharon Malone's book is titled "Grown Woman Talk, Your Guide to Getting Healthy and Staying Healthy." This is a book isn't filled with stats, charts and graphs. It's a book about taking care of oneself and getting support from family, friends and doctors that take the time to recognize you, your symptoms and guide you in the correct direction until you get the answers that you need.Bertha, Dr. Malone's mother, was born in 1914 in rural Alabama. Sadly Bertha died when Dr. Malone, her youngest daughter, was twelve. Out of necessity, Bertha and close relatives had to self diagnose any and all illnesses. There wasn't really any medical services nearby. It was all based on collective knowledge from family members and maybe a midwife who could help out. It was her family, a few things in a medicine cabinet, home remedies, etc that worked when one of her children was sick. "There was so much of an "ancestral collective of knowledge" that Bertha had access to, that we don't have today," reflects Malone. My guest's mother, Bertha lost her mother when she was 14 and Bertha and her sixteen year old sister had three younger siblings to raise. It wasn't an easy childhood, but it didn't stop Bertha for instilling such a wealth knowledge in her own children. I highly recommend you read "Grown Woman Talk," to get the full impact of her mother's life and Dr. Malone's philosophies regarding health.Dr. Malone explains, "medicine is not the answer for everything, but there is also a place and time for it. Don't run to the doctor every time there's a sniffle." "She'd like to see the pendulum come back to the middle," regarding the health field.Bertha was a maid in officers quarters of the near by Military base because she had to work. Plus Bertha took care of the work around the house including the cooking, cleaning, etc.Bertha was confident and calm but there are so many stories that Dr. Malone doesn't know about. In the early 20th century Bertha was very practical and conscientious especially when it came to diet, health and "necessities. Dr. Malone lovingly shares stories of her mother, her work ethic and the moral grounding and how important it was. "I still hear her voice in my head. When I do things I either think of them as either this will make my mother proud or my mother would not be pleased with this particularly behavior."Dr. Malone only had twelve formative years with her mother, but she says "I learned enough about character and what was and wasn't important in life in that short time. Don't ever doubt the the value and importance of mothers and the effect they have on their children. In those few years, I had enough to be really influenced by her about what kind of woman i wanted to be and what kind of mother I wanted to be." Allison Kalsched a women's fitness specialist is one of the Co-Founders of NYMMNJ. She was so excited to share the "significance of the community of women" that came together to not only organize this first ever symposium but the respected presenters and the 250 women that came from near and far to this event.Allison has been working exclusively with women for about ten years on their fitness and health journey. "The story hasn't changed much, remarks Kalsched, since Dr. Malone's mother was born in the early part of the twentieth century, and everything she (Bertha) learned about women's health was through a symposium of women-the benefits of being surrounded by women and how we can help one another." NYMMNJ was put together by a group of women out of the necessity of getting the help they need for their midlife health and wellbeing. Most of these women had come to Allison for training and they've been through all life changes together.Allison concurs that women some times make things too complicated and tend to put our well being on the back burner. As women age we need to work on our bodies differently than when we were younger. Taking the time to see a doctor is important, but "we have to think about the woman's body as much more complicated and much more holistic." Fifty percent of the women who walk in Allison's door complain of frozen shoulder or plantar fasciitis, they are the most common complaints. Allison believes that mainly these issues of inflammation in joints are reactions to changes in our hormones " it's all connected." NOT YOUR MOTHER'S MENOPAUSE NJ:Not Your Mother's Menopause NJ is the creation of three Maplewood/South Orange based women who recognized a need for an event such as this. April L McKenzie started the popular Facebook group Perimenopause — It's for Real (now renamed Not Your Mother's Menopause NJ) when she became increasingly frustrated at her own personal experience with finding help for her perimenopausal symptoms. Since the group's founding in 2021, almost 800 women have shared their knowledge, resources and experiences. She has just been voted in as a board member of Let's Talk Menopause, a national nonprofit, where she will grow her involvement in women's health advocacy and menopause awareness.Stacey Futterman Tauriello is the founder of 5 Point Physical Therapy and a pelvic health specialist. After 28 years practicing pelvic health, Stacey (and her patients) were going through hormonal changes that affected their lifestyle in many ways. Allison Kalschedis a women's fitness specialist who has worked in the Maplewood area for over 10 years. As she and her clients have aged together, she became increasingly interested in how the menopause transition affects every system in a woman's body. She is currently studying to become a certified menopause coach. The three of us have come together to help our community forge a path through the information overload about the menopause transition. This event took place for the very first time on January 12, 2025! More information coming regarding a video of the day long event with all the presenters including Dr. Sharon Malone.DR. In this Better Satellite World podcast series, we ask the question: “What would you do if you had the power to make the world a better place during your career?” Joining SSPI's Lou Zacharilla to answer that question in the sixth episode are 3 members of the “20 Under 35” cohort of 2023: Christian Keil, Chief of Staff at Astranis, Sapna Rao, Senior Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin and Glory Sikka, Technical Program Manager at Maxar. Christian Keil is the Chief of Staff at Astranis, a manufacturer and operator of MicroGEO communications satellites. He leads both the marketing team and the regulatory team, roles in which he is the primary interface between Astranis and the outside world — whether heads of international regulatory agencies or fans on Twitter. After joining Astranis as its third businessperson, Christian played a pivotal role in scaling the company to over 300 employees and a $1.6 billion valuation. Over nearly five years, he has helped by establishing the company's back-end business systems (finance, recruiting, HR, etc.), designing the company's first website, writing the company's first onboarding guide and securing the company's first MOUs from the Department of Defense. Sapna Rao is a Senior Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin. She joined the company in 2018 after graduating from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering with a degree in Aerospace Engineering and completing an Aerospace Engineering internship with Lockheed Martin. Sapna quickly became integral to many Lockheed Martin initiatives, playing an active role as a Software Systems Engineer, Systems Engineer and Mission Operations Developer on significant programs including Artemis I, Artemis II, the Human Landing System, and the Cryogenic Demonstration Mission. She currently serves as the lead for developing customers and partners from industry and academia to participate in Lockheed Martin's Lunar Mobile Vehicle project. Sapna is also the technical lead for Project Agni, a machine learning and artificial intelligence tool that can detect wildfires using lightning and weather data. She is also leading the generation of mission operations sequences for the Cryogenic Demonstration Mission. This mission is proving out the technology for transferring liquid hydrogen in orbit demonstrating refueling in space. This capability will enable future deep space exploration to Mars and beyond. Glory Sikka is the Deputy Technical Program Manager for NASA's Space Infrastructure Dexterous Robot (SPIDER) project at Maxar. She joined the company in 2018 as a Lead Systems Engineer for the project. SPIDER is an ambitious and complex mission demonstrating a brand-new robotic arm system for in-space assembly of spacecraft. Glory's team is responsible for the end-to-end system, which includes end-over-end walking capability, robot control avionics, situational awareness software, operations console, a precision in-space assembled Ka-band antenna and an in-space manufactured composite antenna boom. She was promoted to her current position in 2021 and is one of the youngest employees to ever reach that level of seniority at the company. Before joining Maxar, Glory spent two years as a Systems Engineer performing robotic maintenance activities on nuclear reactors for the MDA Corporation. She made many training and tool upgrades and improvements while at the company, resulting in greater up-time and reduced risk during maintenance operations. Glory began her career at Solar Ship, where she conducted design, modelling, experimental testing and data analysis for a next-generation airship.

Hello, I'm Erik Scott, a Systems Engineer with 21 years of experience in designing supercomputers. Beyond my professional life, I'm a dedicated JuJitsu practitioner and a former CrossFit competition judge. My fitness journey spans 28 years, exploring various modalities and even participating in endurance-based events like GORUCK Rucking. One significant turn in my journey was battling five years of severe back pain, leading me to explore MSC Stem Cell treatment in Colombia, resulting in a remarkable transformation. Today, I'm not only a proud newlywed but also a committed advocate for health and fitness, having shed 20 pounds in just a month and a half. As a new father and husband, my life has taken on new dimensions, and I bring a unique perspective to discussions about balancing a demanding career, maintaining physical and mental well-being, and navigating transformative life experiences. I believe in the power of discipline and positive habits, lessons learned through personal challenges and triumphs. I'm excited to share my story and insights on podcasts, bringing a blend of professional expertise, personal journey, and the joys and challenges of being a new father and husband to your audience. Hero's Journey: “My journey took a significant turn when I faced the relentless challenge of extreme back pain for over five years. This pain, compounded by my rigorous fitness routines, left me with no positive results from medical teams in the United States. One year ago, driven by detailed research, I made the courageous decision to seek MSC Stem Cell treatment for issues including L2-L5 disc herniations, L1-L2 and L3-L4 bulging discs, and L3-L4 canal stenosis. This choice was met with scepticism from medical professionals, friends, and family, as it involved travelling to Colombia for treatment.Fast forward one year, and the transformation is undeniable. A ‘before and after' MRI comparison revealed increased hydration in the herniated disks, the absence of bulging discs, and no signs of canal stenosis, all without inflammation in other areas. My unwavering commitment to health and fitness remained, especially as I embarked on a new chapter of my life, as a newlywed with a baby on the way. The realization that I needed to shed weight and embrace positive habits drove me to action. Fearful that I might not be able to lift my daughter off the ground, I sought the guidance of a mindset, nutrition, and fitness mentor, resulting in a remarkable 20-pound weight loss in just four months. I learned that the pain of discipline far outweighs any regret from neglecting my well-being.” Social Media https://kishar.org (Main Site) Insta @kisharspiritual https://www.instagram.com/kisharspiritual Threads @kisharspiritual https://www.threads.net/@kisharspiritual YouTube @PeaceOnYourJourney https://www.youtube.com/@PeaceOnYourJourney

Picking up where they left off in last time (here), in Episode 244 Sean and Andy continue their roundtable on corporate event audio with Aram Piligian, Brian Maddox, and Michael Curtis. Previously, they looked at the input side of corporate audio, and this time, focus shifts to the outputs — how to balance the needs of the live sound in the room with both recordings and live streams as well as how to minimize the sound of the room in a stream and why that may or may not be desirable. They also discuss how to keep an eye and ear on those feeds while still paying attention to the needs of the live audience, and tricks and techniques to get streams to sound as loud as they need to. This episode digs deep into the journey of strengthening relationships through the Gottman method, sharing personal anecdotes and professional insights. Key takeaways from the episode: What is the Gottman method and how does it apply to couples therapy? What are 'bids' in the context of relationship dynamics, and why are they important? The impact of individual therapy on couples' dynamic How does the intersection of mental health with kink, BDSM, ethical non-monogamy, and LGBTQ issues impact therapy and relational understanding? How can communication and understanding intentions in relationships lead to better connection and trust? What strategies can couples adopt from the Gottman method to prevent relationship issues and strengthen their bond? A former Industrial and Systems Engineer, Derek Wittman is an LMHC in NY and LPC in PA with over 10 years in clinical practice. From the treatment of Substance Use Disorders to couples therapy with the Gottman Method, he had seen families reconnect in healing from the grip of trauma into restored relationships. With precious operations management experience, Wittman has recently taken the leap from his Clinical Manager position with a top 10 national healthcare company to start his own solo private practice. Noteworthy quotes from this episode: [27:17] "and I recognize that if she is hurt about something I did or said, that's absolutely valid, it doesn't mean that she hates me, it means that she trusts me enough to say it. And I'm so glad that I can offer her that level of safety, that she can rest on me and rest in a relationship and I don't get offended by her feelings. I want her to feel safe with me. I see in various communities that I'm a part of where ‘Am I overreacting?' is a very common question. It's like, well, your feelings are not a reaction period. They're all internal. What are you doing with those feelings? You're throwing a temper tantrum? Are you crying? Are you calmly sharing how you feel about something? I hope I can always be calmly sharing or receiving something.” Connect with Derek Www.sageintime.com https://www.facebook.com/profile.php/?id=100092603180057 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sage-in-time-podcast/id1721609280 Connect with Paige Bond Instagram: @paigebondcoaching Facebook: @paigebondcoaching TikTok: @paigebondcoaching Website: https://paigebond.com Paige Bond hosts the Stubborn Love podcast, is a Licensed Marriage Therapist, and a Polyamory Relationship Coach. Many of us spend tons of time talking about things like crafting the perfect kick drum or guitar or lead vocal, but in Episode 243, we focus the podcast on another important but less recognized set of “money” inputs — corporate event vocals. In part one of a two-part deep dive into mixing corporate events, Andy and Sean bring together a collection of top A1s in the business — Aram Piligian, Brian Maddox, and Michael Curtis — to talk about all things input chain. They discuss types of lavalier mics and where to mount them, placement and pattern of lectern microphones, and peel back the curtain on the processing tricks and tips that can help to make sure the message gets across clearly in a deceptively high-pressure field of live audio where literally all of the money sometimes rides on a single, unaccompanied input. This episode is sponsored by Allen & Heath and RCF.In part two next week, focus turns to the output side of the corporate event signal chain, with a look at the differences between the live in-room sound and recording or streaming feeds as well as strategies for managing them all from one console at the same time!Links:Episode 151: Brian Maddox & The Next Generation Of Audio ProfessionalsEpisode 155, Part 1: Aram Piligian On The A2 Role In Corporate AudioEpisode 179: FOH Mixer, Systems Engineer & Audio Educator Michael CurtisEpisode 227: Events Mix Engineer Pete WiejaczkaEpisode 243 TranscriptBe sure to check out the Signal To Noise Facebook Group and Discord Server. Forget the traditional sales pitch; it's all about relationships and networks. This was the sage advice from Eduardo Coll, when he talked with Alice on "Sales Talk for CEOs." His innovative approach to business growth, focusing on conversational selling and leveraging networks, provides a fresh perspective for CEOs and entrepreneurs.Embrace Conversational SellingRelationships Over Sales Pitches: Eduardo's team showcases the effectiveness of building connections first, without immediately pushing for a sale. This approach fosters trust and opens doors for genuine business opportunities.Solving, Not Just Selling: Focus on understanding and solving client problems rather than just selling a product or service. This shift in approach can create more impactful and lasting client relationships.Leverage Your Network for ExpansionTap into Personal Connections: Eduardo stressed the significance of utilizing personal and professional networks, particularly in a business's early stages, as a more effective strategy than traditional sales methods.Empower Your Team in Sales: Encourage every team member to see themselves as potential contributors to sales, utilizing their unique networks and connections.Key Takeaways for CEOs1. Prioritize Relationship-Building: Train your sales team to focus on establishing relationships first.2. In this episode, Laura and Amy discuss the energy storage and microgrid landscape, with a peek behind the curtain as Amy Simpkins finally answers her own questions as CEO of muGrid Analytics and microgrid architect.Fresh from the RE+ 2023 conference, Amy and Laura explore the gap between the marketing around battery systems as solved science versus how much more research is truly necessary. Amy explains why 15 years of industry experience led to muGrid's transition from strictly energy consultants to software vendors, tackling the current chasm between actual economic results delivered and how much more is possible, as well as why the financials are vital.According to Amy, “The intelligent economic decisions are critical for any kind of battery technology and that is something that gets lost.”Quotes - all by Amy Simpkins“The entire value proposition of an energy storage system is in its control, in its decision making piece.” "No matter which element on the periodic table you are using, you still have to intelligently command the battery to work and make intelligent decisions that will deliver financial results from your battery.” "In order to actually deploy energy storage and associated hybrid systems, they have to generate revenue."“We've made the transition from consultants who said what could be possible to a product vendor who says we can DO this. It's not just probable, it's possible, and we're doing it.”AboutAs co-founder and CEO at muGrid Analytics, Amy Simpkins solves wicked problems at the intersection of energy technology and economics using math and modeling. muGrid provides bankable techno-economic analysis, optimized control, and project development of renewable energy, energy storage, and microgrids to maximize economic return, increase energy resilience, and promote energy equity in the US and around the world. We The Sales Engineers: A Resource for Sales Engineers, by Sales Engineers
Sales Engineering looks different in different companies. It looks different in the same company selling to different customers. And being able to service all different customer sizes is a skill that not many people have. Some organizations look for specific SEs with experience working with specific customers mainly since Sales Engineers method of working is very dependent on who they have worked with in the past. And that is part of the discussion I have with Mohamed Barkhad today, a Customer Engineer at Google Cloud who has been a Sales Engineer for close to 10 years. We discuss how he shifted between roles and customers, how he shifted industries as well and how he learned to have tough conversations. Shownotes: https://wethesalesengineers.com/show283
