JJ returns from nearly 24 hours of chaperoning teenagers on a drama trip from Fargo to Minneapolis, complete with bus bathrooms, trash bag confusion, Mall of America supervision, and the strange joy of watching students get blown away by live theater. Then the conversation shifts into Trailer Park Boys, underground movie theaters, houndstooth jackets, quotable dirtbag Shakespeare, and whether future generations can still discover weird media organically without an algorithm handing it to them.
FULLY & COMPLETELY: REDUX"In Violet Light" - The Tragically HipEpisode Show Notes——————————————————————————————————Fully & Completely: Redux | "In Violet Light" - The Tragically Hip (2002)——————————————————————————————————Hey, it's jD here. Some albums don't just meet you where you are - they find you exactly when you need them. **"In Violet Light" is that record.** Released in June 2002, it's the one that pulled jD hard back into The Tragically Hip after a stretch of distance. And if you listen closely, it makes total sense why. This isn't a band trying to hold on - it's a band that has let go of every obligation and is just making music for themselves. **The result is one of the most quietly assured records of The Hip's entire career.**This week on Fully & Completely: redux, jD and Greg LeGros go track by track through "In Violet Light" - the eighth studio album from The Tragically Hip, recorded in the Bahamas with legendary producer Hugh Padham - and make the case that this record has no business being this good, this far into a career.——————————————————————————————————EPISODE OVERVIEW"In Violet Light" landed in a 2002 music landscape that included Coldplay's "A Rush of Blood to the Head," Queens of the Stone Age's "Songs for the Deaf," Beck's "Sea Change," and Broken Social Scene's "You Forgot It in People." The indie pop explosion was just beginning to blow the roof off Canadian music. The Hip were eight albums deep, the mainstream had largely written them off, and **they responded by making one of their best records.** No fat. No filler. Eleven tracks of lean, confident, beautiful rock and roll. The album was recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas - the same studio where AC/DC recorded "Back in Black" and Bob Marley cut some of his most enduring work - with Hugh Padham, the producer behind the gated drum sound that defined the 1980s (Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," Sting's solo catalogue, The Police's "Synchronicity"). **jD and Greg break down why that combination - this band, this producer, this place - produced something genuinely special.**——————————————————————————————————TRACK BY TRACK HIGHLIGHTS**'Are You Ready to Love'** - The opener sets the whole album's thesis. jD hears the first verse as a direct response to the critics and mainstream fans who had written The Hip off. **"They're pulling the plug. They've got our whole dug." And then - the chorus arrives like a shrug and a fist at the same time: are you ready for love?** A great rock and roll song that doubles as a mission statement.**'Use It Up'** - Built on a lyric attributed to the booklet of a Raymond Carver collection, this is a track about seizing everything, wasting nothing, and making music for the love of it. Greg hears Radiohead's "OK Computer" in the verses and the Georgia Satellites in the chorus - **and somehow The Tragically Hip pull both of those things off in the same song.** A slow burn that rewards headphones.**'The Darkest One'** - jD turns up whatever he's listening to every single time this song starts. **"The wild are strong and the strong are the darkest ones - and you're the darkest one."** Greg calls it a safe place. A song about freedom of expression, comfort, and the strange intimacy of being fully understood. Don't let the Trailer Park Boys video fool you - this song could have broken them wide open.**'It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken'** - The centrepiece. The lead single. **Both jD and Greg pick this as their track of the record - the first time in the history of Fully & Completely that hosts have landed on the same song.** Named for a Canadian graphic novel by Seth and a phrase used by band staffer Molly Lorimer to describe life on the road, it's a song about mortality, aging, and the strange grace that comes when you stop fighting. Death is swirling all around it - and it's still one of the most uplifting things The Tragically Hip ever made.**'Silver Jet'** - The one that changes gears just right. Greg connects this song personally to the empty skies over the Danforth in the days after 9/11, and the feeling of the first plane cutting back through the silence. **A song about hope, fear, and the things that pull your gaze forward.** The wolves of Northumberland. An archipelago. A green star. Only Gord.**'Throwing Off Glass'** - Companion piece to 'Trick Rider' from "Phantom Power" - if that song is about his son, this one is about his daughter. A slow builder that rewards patience. **A soundscape that would fit comfortably on "Coke Machine Glow."****'All Tore Up'** - A great drinking rock and roll song. Dottie the bluegrass singer. Open concept. Getting a little happening with old friends. **No one else writes a lyric like this and makes it fit inside a song this well.** Turn it up.**'Leave'** - A waltz in 3/4 time. Beautiful backup vocals. A late-night phone call at three in the morning. **"You better be dying." And they were.** An emotional gut-punch that doubles as a permission slip - to leave a job, a relationship, a place that no longer fits.**'The Dire Wolf'** - A pseudo-history lesson disguised as a rock song. Tallulah Bankhead and Canada Lee, stars of Hitchcock's "The Lifeboat." Ann Harvey of Isle of Morts, Newfoundland, who rescued 163 shipwrecked souls in 1828. A poem called "Sea Surface Full of Clouds" by Wallace Stevens. **Greg pulls all of this from memory. It's an entire university lecture wrapped in six minutes of music that absolutely slaps.****'The Dark Canuck'** - The closer. Possibly the longest Tragically Hip song ever recorded at six and a half minutes. A time signature change halfway through. **Canadian soldiers as peacekeepers. Apple, Zippo, and Metronome as record labels. Jaws at the drive-in. The Dark Canuck playing second on the double bill.** Nobody at the drive-in is staying for it. And that's sort of the whole point.——————————————————————————————————WHY THIS EPISODE MATTERSThis is the album that brought jD back to The Hip in earnest - **the record that cracked open the second half of his relationship with this band.** It's also the episode where he and Greg pick the same song for the first time. And it's the one where jD, partway through discussing 'Leave,' pauses to talk about his mother. **Listen for that moment. It's what this podcast is for.**"In Violet Light" is a masterpiece with no business being this good eight albums in. And this episode earns every minute of its runtime. So there's that.——————————————————————————————————SOURCES & CREDITS• HipMuseum.com• This Is Our Life: The Tragically Hip in the 1990s (Michael Barclay)• "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken" - graphic novel by Seth• "Sea Surface Full of Clouds" - poem by Wallace Stevens• Ann Harvey of Isle of Morts, Newfoundland - historical record• Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas - production history• Raymond Carver - attributed quote in "Use It Up"——————————————————————————————————CONNECT WITH THE SHOW• Facebook: facebook.com/groups/tthpods• Instagram: @tthpods• YouTube: youtube.com/@tthpods• Email: tthpodcastseries@gmail.comThe Tragically Hip Podcast Series - Est. 2018#TheTragicallyHip #TheHip #InVioletLight #FullyCompletely #GordDownie #TragicallyHip #CanadianRock——————————————————————————————————Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/tthtop40/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Mike Rowe talks about not being the “dirty jobs” Mike Rowe, planning for the future, being funny in high school, becoming an electrical engineer and giving it up for comedy, performing in NY comedy clubs, Alan Zweibel moving him to LA, roasts, jokes, his book “It's a Funny Thing”, Rodney Dangerfield giving him hope, comedy cliques, and why he's moving to Connecticut. Bio: Michael Rowe is an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer who has worked on many highly regarded comedy and animated shows on television. While still a teenager, Michael began his comedy career as a stand-up comic at such notable New York City clubs as The Improv, The Comedy Cellar and Caroline's. From there, he landed a job writing jokes for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Weekend Update, as well as sketches for shows on MTV, A&E and Comedy Central. Hollywood called, bringing Michael out west to work with Martin Short on his syndicated sketch-comedy show. This soon led to opportunities as a sitcom writer/producer on shows starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Ted Danson, and with Eddie Murphy on his groundbreaking animated series, THE PJs. Michael's affinity for the comedic heart and artistic freedom of animation led to a seven-season run as a writer and Co-Executive Producer of the highly acclaimed series, FUTURAMA. From there, Michael joined FAMILY GUY as a writer/producer and soon after, he became the showrunner for Comedy Central's animated series, BRICKLEBERRY. Along the way Michael was awarded 6 Emmy nominations (with 1 win), 2 Annie Awards (with 2 wins), and a WGA Award for his FUTURAMA episode, Game of Tones. He was also nominated for a Canadian Emmy for his work as Executive Producer and Director on Netflix's animated series, THE TRAILER PARK BOYS. In recent live-action endeavors, Michael was a Co-Executive Producer on the hit TV series, 2 BROKE GIRLS for CBS. Michael is currently in development with Supercell creating an adult animated series from their megahit game franchises CLASH OF CLANS and CLASH ROYALE. He is also in development on an animated series with the incredible David Cross, and a separate animated series with Bob Odenkirk. He is also a long-standing, frequent contributor to the ongoing Comedy Central Roasts, featuring such celebrities as James Franco, Donald Trump, Justin Bieber and Roseanne, just to name a few.

The Tragically Hip Top Forty Countdown: Song 20 — Neil from Arroyo GrandeHey, it's jD, and this week I'm joined by a die-hard hockey fan and Hip convert who hails from California. Meet Neil from Arroyo Grande, the west coast wizard of late-night YouTube rabbit holes and deep-cut reverence.Neil didn't grow up with The Hip in his backyard. He had to find them — through hockey, through Trailer Park Boys, through a fascination with Canadian culture that led him down a road paved with Gretzky, Jericho, and yes… Gord.We talk about getting into the band via Yer Favourites, chasing context across albums and eras, and how discovering The Hip opened the door to new perspectives on art, identity, and memory. He shares what it's like being an American Hip fan (“Wait, they're not on the radio here?”), and how Phantom Power, Man Machine Poem, and some Gordon Edgar Downie solo magic helped him through hard times — and made the music his own. From WWE finishers to vapor trails to songs that hit like Shakespearean tragedy, this one's for the late bloomers, the lyric heads, and anyone who ever found themselves singing along to a song they didn't fully understand… until they really did.

On this episode, two Canadian guitarists. Alex Liefson is first. The latest Envy of None album dropped last week. He talked about the album and his thoughts on solos - there are only a few on this record - and how he would describe the EON music, as well as working with Andy Curran on it. Of course, we talked RUSH. How was it to create with a guy like Neil Peart? Alex has nothing but glowing things to say about the late drumming master. They also have a new 50th-anniversary package out. He also talks of his over 50-year friendship with Geddy Lee. There are some very funny moments when we discussed his appearances on The Trailer Park Boys and in the movie I Love You, Man. Really funny! Up next, it's Phil X. The Jon Bon Jovi guitarist's new album POW! Right In The Kisser is out now. It features a different drummer on each song. Phil talks to that and working with these legends. He spoke to the first time he took the stage with JBJ, in front of 50,000 people! Also his thoughts on the upcoming Triumph tribute album that he's a part of. That's just for starters in the great conversation with phil. Thanks for listening! Meltdown

That's a wrap on 2024! Episode 171 of the What Are We Doing podcast is here, and it's everything you'd expect to close out a year like this—chaotic, hilarious, and slightly unhinged. From bizarre Christmas gifts to Sabrina Carpenter's Dunkin' takeover, we've covered it all. Let's dive in! First things first, I've officially peaked—the Nvidia CEO gave me sunglasses for Christmas. (Yes, the story is as ridiculous as it sounds.) On the flip side, we had the annual mom gift disaster. This year? A pair of used socks. Nobody knows whose they were, but don't worry—they've been burned. Let's face it: millennials don't want gifts unless it's cash or a $100 Amazon gift card. We've got enough going on without pretending to love another stainless steel tumbler. From Coachella to her Dunkin' collab—the Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso is already iconic—Sabrina Carpenter dominated this year. We're calling it: she's on her way to Taylor Swift-level stardom. Dunkin', take all my money. Imported from Canada, these chips are a whole experience. The Chicken Chips stole the show, while the Dirty Burger flavor was a bit heavy on the mustard. Are we the only U.S. podcast to review them? Probably. Somebody give us a trophy. Brace yourselves for 2025: Happy Gilmore 2, Now You See Me 3, and Freaky Friday 2 are all happening. Hollywood, what are we doing? And if James Cameron claims he invented fire for Avatar 3, I'm done. Turns out Honey's browser extension has been hijacking affiliate links for years, stealing commissions from creators. Shoutout to mega lag for exposing this billion-dollar scam. Honey, what are we doing? Goodbye, Party City, Big Lots, and maybe Denny's. The retail world is crumbling, but hey—2025 is the year of live e-commerce. Start streaming now or get left behind. Gypsy Rose and Ken are officially done, and her baby bump drama is peak trailer park reality TV. Will Ryan swoop in? Will Ken cry on TikTok Live? The saga continues in 2025. That's it for 2024! From bizarre stories to chaotic takes, it's been a wild ride. Catch you in 2025 with more satire, more laughs, and hopefully fewer used socks. Happy New Year! 00:00:00 - Intro and Nvidia CEO's Christmas gift sunglasses story. 00:00:48 - The annual mom gift disaster: used socks saga. 00:02:03 - Millennials and Christmas: why we're done with holiday lists. 00:03:26 - Sabrina Carpenter dominates 2024; Dunkin's Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso. 00:04:14 - Levi's Christmas gift policies and the stainless steel tumbler rant. 00:06:12 - The mother-in-law gift tradition: snow scrapers and coloring books. 00:08:45 - Taste testing Trailer Park Boys chips: dill pickle and chicken flavors. 00:11:13 - Sabrina Carpenter's rise to stardom and her Dunkin' collab breakdown. 00:16:42 - Hollywood in 2025: sequel overload (Happy Gilmore 2, Now You See Me 3, Freaky Friday 2). 00:26:54 - The Avatar 3 fire technology rant; James Cameron criticism. 00:36:03 - Mission: Impossible and the need to retire Ethan Hunt. 00:40:07 - Now You See Me 3 wild plot prediction with Criss Angel twist. 00:43:30 - The Honey browser extension scam exposed. 00:51:12 - The retail apocalypse: Party City, Big Lots, and more crumble. 00:55:17 - The rise of live social e-commerce for 2025. 01:02:22 - Trailer Park Boys chip flavors reviewed in-depth. 01:10:52 - Gypsy Rose drama to close the year. 01:13:10 - Outro and farewell to 2024. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/what-are-we-doing-pod/support
