Join us as we talk to Em Lahey.Em was fit, healthy, and thriving at the peak of her career. After experiencing persistent sinusitis symptoms and headaches, she was shocked to learn she had a 4x6x7cm mass in her sinus. The diagnosis: NUT Carcinoma, an extremely rare and aggressive cancer. She was told the cancer didn't respond well to treatment and was given a life expectancy of just 6–9 months. The tumor was inoperable, and after chemotherapy proved ineffective, she underwent radiotherapy and began immunotherapy to try to keep the disease stable.Genomic testing eventually offered a glimmer of hope, a targeted treatment that wasn't initially accessible in Australia until all other options had been exhausted. Em finally qualified for the drug and has now been on it for three years, making her the longest-standing patient on the treatment. As a side effect of radiation, she lost vision in her left eye - something she describes as more challenging than the cancer itself, as it's a constant, daily reminder.Em has been a dedicated sargent in the army for 15 years however has been off work on medical leave for the last few years. She applied for the ADF Adaptive Sports Program, which led to her selection for the 2024 Warrior Games in Florida. Earlier this year, she proudly represented Australia at the Invictus Games in Canada, competing in rowing, swimming, wheelchair curling, alpine skiing, and skeleton. In 2024, Em was the subject of The Time to Live exhibition by the Australian Cancer Research Foundation. She offered a powerful and intimate experience as she auctioned minutes of her remaining time, highlighting the irreplaceable value of time and raising awareness for cancer research.Em's sense of humor and reflections on life's sliding doors moments reveal her deep perspective and resilience. Her story is about truly living. She's not done yet, there's still so much she's determined to experience and achieve.LINKShttps://www.cancerchicks.org.au/https://www.acrf.com.au/time-to-live/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEcT7nV205Qhttps://thebigcpodcast.com/ Hosted on Acast. Hi #AmWriters and subscribers to Jess' content, Jess here, looking out my office window over a beautiful, snowy Vermont Sunday and thinking of you. We do these things called “Lahey Cafe” days in the Lahey household and we have one coming up this afternoon. Back when my husband and I were in graduate school and never got to spend time together away from the books, we would go to cafes (Caribou Coffee on Main Street in Chapel Hill, NC was our favorite) and spend time together while studying. We kept this practice up once we had kids and now our daughter (a college student) asks for them regularly when she has essays to write or studying to do at home. Today, I'm serving up a King Arthur chocolate babka I baked yesterday, the wood stove is burning, and we will all sit at the dining room table with tea and coffee and chocolate-stained fingers while we work on our respective projects. I'm still slogging away on a book proposal, so that's my task at the Lahey cafe. Before I leave for the cafe, however, I wanted to offer up a bonus episode of the #AmWriting podcast for you. Last week, for the final AMA of the year, I invited EVERYONE, not just subscribers, to ask me anything, and boy, they did. I love these AMAs because they get at the heart of our most basic intent when we started this podcast over four hundred episodes, which was to flatten the learning curve for writers. If we, or someone we interview, have learned something through a mistake or stumbled upon something useful, why make someone else repeat the effort. Also, AMAs are a throwback to my career as a teacher, which I miss very much.So enjoy the podcast version of last week's AMA as well as some pen recommendations recommendations for left-handed writers from Bungu (not sponsored, I'm just obsessed with their products and their TikTok, @bungustore). I've linked the pens here:Zebra Sarasa Dry is their top choice, apparently because the ink dries so fastUni Power Tank (pressurized ink!)Uni JetstreamPento EnergelIt's a working weekend, so I'm off to work on some annoying administrative details of my book proposal and play with my new kitten, Lila. Thanks for reading #AmWriting! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit amwriting.substack.com/subscribe

Show notes: https://www.tamihackbarth.com/blog/episode-225 One of the most pivotal life choices I ever made was changing my career from politics to teaching. [You can read about my unconventional career path]. Before studying to be a teacher I had a very fixed mindset. I believed that people were smart or not. I believed that you were born with it or you weren't. I believed failure was the end of the line and the worst thing that could happen. The philosophical nature of my yoga practice coincided with the timing of my career change. I was seeking something…better. I was choking on the black and white thinking I was used to. Whispers of new ways of thinking crept into my mind while I was on my mat. As I entered my teaching credential program I set the intention to have a beginner's mind. I didn't have to have the answers already, I was seeking learning. I was allowing myself to show up vulnerably. I was showing my professors and my classmates I was humble enough to learn new things, make mistakes, and try something different to get different results. This simple shift of being okay with not already knowing changed my life forever. Perfectionism had its grip on me for the first 30+ years of my life, and it felt terrible. Teaching allowed me to be present for learning. Not the good scores and college acceptance letters to post on social media. But the real kind. We send our kids to school to learn, but how many of us are okay with making mistakes, failing, not getting what is taught and having to figure it out? Learning means acquiring knowledge or skill in something. That means you start out not knowing anything about it. Then, you learn about it and realize how little you know. With practice, study, and data collection, you can apply what you've gained to what you know, and if you stick with it, you'll eventually become competent. In other words, learning is a hard, ugly process. And it absolutely rocks if you can get beyond the shame of not knowing or being terrible at stuff in the beginning. Anyway, I got to interview Jess Lahey about her books about failure and addiction and I really tried not to fangirl too much.
