It may feel like a marathon when you write a book, but a marathoner can rest when they cross the finish line. When a business author reaches the publication date, they can't rest. They now have to shift from writing to marketing their business book because publishing was not the goal. A step often skipped is the book launch, which overlaps the end of the writing phase and the start of the marketing phase. I love this part. I coach entrepreneurs to build a launch team of likely prospects and referral partners, get 50+ Amazon reviews, and create a pipeline for the author's offers. Don't jump from writing your book to paying for PR services before your book looks like a success on Amazon. Reviews are social proof, and conversations with prospects lead to new revenue opportunities. Reach out to schedule a complimentary book launch brainstorming session. Complete the form at www.robbiesamuels.com/booklaunchsupport to get started. And now, it's my pleasure to introduce our panel of authors, who will join me in a moment for a frank conversation about the ups and downs of the author journey. Biba Pédron wrote “M.D.R: The Winning Formula for a Successful Life: Luck does not exist; You create it.” This book will show you—and even prove to you—that anything is indeed possible, even your wildest dreams. Nothing is impossible. Brenda Reynolds wrote “TBD—To Be Determined: Leading with Clarity and Confidence in Uncertain Times” where she shares information, strategies, and real-life examples that will grow your confidence and hone your leadership skills. Julia Freer Goldstein wrote “Beyond the Green Team: Aligning Internal and External Communication to Advance Corporate Sustainability.” A key message is that the way you communicate sustainability—first within your company and then with customers, investors, and other stakeholders—is the essential foundation of any successful green initiative. Let's give a warm welcome to our panelists, Biba, Brenda, and Julia. Learn why book reviews are vital for your book's social proof and impact on platforms like Amazon and beyond. Discover why separating your publication day from your launch day can alleviate stress and streamline your promotion timeline. I offer tactical advice on acquiring reviews, from drafting templates to guiding reviewers through the process. Understand how well-reviewed books enhance your credibility and business reach, and the importance of engaging your network in the review process. The Dæmons is the final story in the eighth season of Doctor Who, with Jon Pertwee playing the eponymous hero (see episode 48 covering The House That Dripped Blood for some fantastic Pertrivia). It aired over five weeks on BBC1 from 22 May to 19 June 1971. In The Dæmons, the Master, played by Roger Delgado, awakens the ancient horned alien Azal, hoping to gain his immense power. Delgado, a close friend of Pertwee, worked extensively on stage, TV, film, and radio. His work included the BBC's Quatermass II, Battle of the River Plate, Hammer's The Mummy's Shroud, and English dubbing for The Horror Express (see episode 7). He often played villains in British action-adventure series like Danger Man, The Saint, The Champions, and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). Tragically, Delgado died in a car accident in Turkey while filming a Franco-German mini-series. He was only 55 years old. The Dæmons began as an audition scene for Jo Grant, played by Katy Manning, and was later reworked into episode four. Manning attended Miss Dixon and Miss Wolfe's School for Girls, becoming close friends with Liza Minnelli. She socialized with stars like James Mason, Dirk Bogarde, and had tea with Noël Coward at The Savoy. As a teenager, she modeled for Biba and dated Jimi Hendrix, Richard Eyre, David Troughton, Derek Fowlds, Stewart Bevan, and Peter Bardens, Rod Stewart's keyboard player. Manning had a close bond with Pertwee, who would pick her up daily for filming, either in his car or on his motorbike, where she would ride pillion. They even raced with Dick Emery and Sir Ralph Richardson to see who could reach the BBC studios first. After three years on Doctor Who, Manning left to pursue other acting work. Pertwee was saddened by her departure, citing her exit and Delgado's death as two major reasons for leaving the show a year later. Producer Barry Letts wanted to write a story about black magic to tap into the zeitgeist of the Age of Aquarius and frighten young viewers. However, script editor Terrance Dicks had concerns it might be seen as Satanist. The story was revised to focus on a scientific threat with occult themes. Originally, the Master was to worship the demon in a church, but to avoid offending religious viewers, the scenes were moved to a crypt, later referred to as a cavern (though the set remained crypt-like). Letts co-wrote the script with playwright Robert Sloman under the pseudonym Guy Leopold, as the BBC frowned on production staff writing for their own shows. Much of the serial was filmed on location in Aldbourne, Wiltshire, with two weeks allocated for filming—more than double the usual time—leading to more outdoor scenes. The cast included comedy actress Damaris Hayman, who starred as Miss Hawthorne. Hayman had an interest in the supernatural and served as an unofficial adviser on the production. Her friend, a practicing witch, praised the accuracy of the scripts. Future Sooty puppeteer Matthew Corbett had a brief role in the final episode as a hooded coven member who objects to Jo's sacrifice. Corbett, whose great-uncle was Harry Ramsden of fish-and-chip fame, had to change his name when joining the actors' union Equity, as there was already a Peter Corbett registered.Studio taping for The Dæmons was completed on 16 May 1971, just weeks before the final episode aired. This episode included footage of a model church being blown up, which was so realistic that it prompted viewer complaints. If the clip of the Brigadier's helicopter crashing into the heat shield looks familiar, it was borrowed from the James Bond film From Russia with Love. This month, we've been looking at holistic, complementary and alternative therapies for horses. We've met holistic healer Jo Rose and Ian Thirkell, the man behind Arc Equine and we've talked about Zoopharmacognosy with Joanna Haslam. In this episode, we meet a lady that has a gift for communicating with animals. She grew up with dogs and horses and remembers first communicating with a horse at the age of 10-years-old. She trained as a healer with what is now known as The Healing Trust 21-years-ago and developed her spiritual understanding and view of the world by attending workshops and courses ranging from soul development and shamanism to crystal and colour healing. She is a qualified teacher, and a trained Equine Assisted Psychotherapist, but she joined us to talk about her experiences as a horse whisperer. Listen to Karen Lyon talk about what animals tell her, how they tell her and how she translates their messages for their owners, and what Katie's Lusitano Biba (Ibéria) told her. Celebrating the legendary Randy Paragary, we reflect on his profound impact on Sacramento's culinary and social landscape. Randy's journey began in 1969 with the opening of the Parapow Palace Saloon, a revolutionary step that transformed a humble grocery store into a vibrant music venue. Randy's insightful reflections on the cultural upheavals of the Vietnam War era and the Summer of Love, coupled with his innovative spirit, paint a vivid picture of the man who helped shape Sacramento's nightlife and hospitality scene. His knack for repurposing old spaces into dynamic social hubs is a testament to his visionary approach. From the early days of the Victorian-themed Lord Beaverbrooks to the enduring success of Paragary's, we explore the evolution of Randy's ventures. The chapter underscores the influence of culinary icons like Alice Waters and Wolfgang Puck on Randy's ambition to introduce Sacramento to high-quality dining experiences. We delve into the story behind the wood-fired pizza oven at Paragary's, one of the oldest west of the Mississippi, and how it became a hallmark of the restaurant's appeal. This journey is not just about food but about creating spaces that bring people together, a legacy that Randy maintained through his Midtown hotel project. In an engaging conversation, Randy shares his entrepreneurial wisdom, recounting both triumphs and challenges. The creation of a hotel that blends dining and social experiences without the typical end-of-night lull showcases Randy's forward-thinking approach. Reflecting on his journey, Randy offers invaluable lessons on the evolving complexities of the restaurant industry, drawing parallels between the social upheavals of the 60s and the present day. His insights on the increasing barriers for young entrepreneurs today serve as a sobering reminder of the changing landscape. Reinvent: Navigating Business Transformation in a Hyperdigital Era by Faisal Hoque https://amzn.to/3NTeIrr The Journey to Organizational Transformation Given the rate of change that we have experienced and will continue to see in the world, it's a challenge trying to stay on top of everything. Organizations must consider revising and possibly scrapping decades-old habits, processes, and their very ways of thinking and operating. In so doing, organizations can literally reinvent themselves. Transformation requires much more than simply obtaining the latest technology, plugging it in, and sitting back to watch reinvention take place. From top to bottom, organizations will be compelled to change entire mindsets, attitudes, and assumptions about how they operate, how they can grow, and even the very reason for their existence. This book introduces readers to ideas, concepts, and a comprehensive framework (LIFTS) that they can use to better position themselves and their organizations to reap the greatest number of benefits that business and digital transformation can afford. It's a journey rich with promise that explains complex concepts in an understandable common language. The book is divided into three distinct sections. The First section, "Why? The Case for Business Transformation in a Hyper-Digital Era," makes the argument for organizational reinvention—from the changing nature of consumers to shifting workforce priorities to the necessity for greater organizational security. The second section, "Transformation via Digitalization—Necessary Steps," examines actions necessary to prepare for transformation, including overcoming significant obstacles, recognizing the essential value of leadership, and forecasting what your organization is likely to become in the future. The final section, "What to Do: Navigating with LIFTS," offers a comprehensive discussion of a five-step process geared to guiding your company through its transformation. Using the acronym LIFTS — learn, investigate, formulate, take off, and study—you'll learn what goes into a successful transformative effort, including elements that, if overlooked, can sink otherwise solid planning. REINVENT is the result of the author's personal and professional journey — one that is made possible by three decades of work with colleagues, customers, partners, academics, and industry experts from around the globe. What is the BIBA Conference and why is it such a crucial event on the insurance industry calendar? To what extent are skills from external industries transferrable into insurance careers? How can the mobility of such external skills into insurance roles be better communicated in the current recruitment landscape? In this episode, we're very pleased to be speaking with Emma Chapman, Head of Conference at BIBA. This year's BIBA Conference held in Manchester in May attracted 9000 people across two days. The event aims to unite brokers, insurers, and the wider insurance community to do business, establish and build relationships, and much more. In conversation with Sandra Lewin, Emma discusses how her background in theatre has informed her decision-making in curating and arranging the annual conference over the past eight years. As such, she is a testament to the transferability of skills from seemingly unrelated industries into the wide array of roles available in insurance. Quote of the Episode “You go to conferences for so many reasons. Number one is to do business, we know that. Fundamentally, people say [that, at BIBA,] they get a month's worth of business done in two days. Brilliant. But what else can you get?” The BIBA Conference is, first and foremost, a springboard for networking, bolstering existing business relationships and fostering new ones. Yet, in a post-COVID landscape in which many people have hybrid work schedules and a more intertwined work-life balance, it is harder to entice people to attend these events. BIBA's first in-person conference after the pandemic was in 2022, and it was a huge success, which can largely be attributed to people's glee at being able to attend such events and network face-to-face. In 2023, Emma and her team faced a challenge of how to improve upon this warm reception, now that hybrid working patterns are seemingly here to stay. They decided to bring a flavour of fun and theatricality to the conference, with puppies available to cuddle at a Wellness Zone, and with a speech from Sir Mo Farah. Key Takeaways Emma studied a Drama and Theatre Studies degree at Exeter, and went into Stage Management in the West End. After several successful years managing a variety of big productions, she sought a change and became involved in event organising, eventually working for BIBA via an agency before being invited to arrange the conference in-house post-pandemic. Theatre and insurance are undoubtedly very different industries, but Emma's role at BIBA entails a need to put on a spectacle for conference attendees. She argues that her theatre background has significantly informed her work at BIBA, emphasising that if and when you do decide to switch roles or even industries into insurance, your past experience will always be beneficial in one way or another. You should never consider your previous working roles or plans as a barrier to entry or transition within the industry. Emma's daily work at BIBA is extremely varied, but it is ultimately founded upon building and maintaining mutually beneficial business relationships, organisation, and an ability to meet deadlines – all skills she developed in her previous career which are transferrable to and crucial in an insurance career. Indeed, Emma suggests that taking skills from external and ostensibly unrelated industries into insurance is extremely beneficial to ensure a consistent inflow of fresh ideas and perspectives. Emma argues that we must actively combat the common misconception that insurance careers are boring, noting that she's never had an uninteresting day on the job. She emphasises that insurance is something which everyone must experience and engage with from a client perspective. As such, irrespective of which industry one initially works in, everyone is in a strong position to contribute ideas to insurance, as every year, we all have to purchase or renew car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, and so on. Best Moments/Key Quotes “Because we now live in a semi hybrid world, it takes even more to get people out of their homes. You have to deliver something that you cannot get at home, more so than when everyone was in offices, because everyone was always leaving their home. Everyone was always travelling; it was very easy to go to things after work.” “What I love about my job is it's so varied. I mean, we organise literally everything to do with the exhibition… So, my day could be, depending on where we are on the lifecycle of the event, it could be signing off on social media, ordering 1000s of chairs, approving budget, briefing contractors, sorting out the advertising, paying for things, booking things. It's a real smorgasbord of things. And that's why I love what I do so much.” “If you spent some time understanding the insurance industry, you could be an excellent addition, [if you] come with outside ideas. That's what I'm always passionate about: there are these transferable skills in so many different career choices.” “For example, as an event organiser, someone who does event organising for a pharmaceutical company, something totally different to insurance, but because you are still organising a live event, an engaging thing for delegates, you still need to listen to the feedback, and work out whether what you're giving is what people actually want to receive. They would come with amazing ideas, and vice versa. There almost needs to be this give and take between industries, so that you constantly have fresh ideas coming.” Resources BIBA – The BIBA Conference wins Best Association Event Award: https://www.biba.org.uk/press-releases/the-biba-conference-wins-best-association-event-award/ About the Guest Emma Chapman is the Head of Conference at BIBA (British Insurance Brokers' Association), leading a team who organises its annual conference. Before Robert Masullo became a Sacramento pizza icon, he was the son of a Sac Bee journalist and a stay at-home mom. His mom was a major influence on his life as she taught him the values in hard work and making recipes from scratch. His Sacramento food orgin story is epic, with him riding a Vespa to Biba to wash dishes when he was 16. His love of food took him to the CIA in New York and then a little over a decade stop in Minnesota. He worked as a baker, learning the art and craft dough and how to perfect it. With dough still on his mind, he found his way back home to family and Sacramento, met his future wife and luckily for us, opened up Masullo Pizzeria. With many awards and much recognition, Robert has crafted his place in Sacramento history. Take a listen to hear this masterclass on pizza.
