For October's horror fiction pick, The Pink Smoke welcomes back Wendy Mays of the Pet Cinematary and Losers Pod podcasts to talk about the swarm of killer-cats-descending-on-rural-Long Island-community classic Feral by Berton Roueche. Among the topics discussed: if it's possible to sympathize with city couples who abandon kittens on the side of the road at the end of the summer, the right way to deal with cannibalistic strays who decide to add human flesh to the menu and whether or not a 1991 TV movie totally ripped off Roueche's novel. Snuggle up with your favorite feline and follow along! Hosts John Cribbs & Christopher Funderburg are joined by (who else?) Wendy Mays of the Pet Cinematary podcast to discuss both Stephen King's novel and the recent adaptation of Pet Sematary! The conversation features a discussion of why filmmakers always attempt to "fix" King's work, the nature of grief in horror cinema and an all-hamster remake of The Virgin Suicides.

This week, we are joined by Wendy Mays of the Pet Cinematary podcast (http://www.petcinematary.com/ ) to discuss her pick, the movie Lady Terminator (aka Nasty Hunter) from 1989! We shoulda done this episode in our Katharine Hepburn voices, ‘cause we’re talking as fast as we can to keep up with Howard Hawks over here! Wendy Mays of the Pet Cinematary podcast (#LadyPodSquad) joins us for a conversation about the 1938 classic screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, starring Hepburn and Cary Grant and directed by Howard Hawks. Listen in as we attempt to explain (and remember) this crazy plot, tell silly stories from the set, and dive into Hepburn’s role as one of the earliest Manic Pixie Dream Girls in cinema. Is Baby a human baby? (Nope.) Do Luke and Lorelai have a Grant and Hepburn dynamic? (Yep.) Would Kyla, Taylor, and Wendy like to hang out with a leopard? (Debatable.) You’ll never know if you don’t listen in—feel free to turn it up to 1.5 speed to make us sound like Hepburn! Other pop culture we ref: Glitter, The Thin Man, The Shining, Elizabethtown, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, (500) Days of Summer, The Awful Truth, Orlando Bloom, If I Stay, Pretty in Pink CHECK OUT WENDY’S PODCAST, PET CINEMATARY The Pet Cinematary podcast website (with links to listen) Pet Cinematary on Facebook Pet Cinematary on Twitter Pet Cinematary on Instagram CHECK OUT THE #LADYPODSQUAD Lady Pod Squad on Twitter
Wendy Mays from “Pet Cinematary” joins me to talk about the illogical happenings that occur when someone puts a remote control into helium-inflated pizza dough? Or, something? So many horror movies play off humanity's primal fears of Mother Nature-- often taking the form of the Supernatural... but from weather to plants, the earth beneath our feet to the other species who walk up on it, nature itself has been serving up stories since the beginning of time and perhaps none more so than those involving our fellow animals. While Jamie Righetti couldn't make it to the Dungeon this week, lucky for us, Chico Leo got to discuss a couple of "animals in horror" movies with special guest Wendy Mays, host of the entertaining animal-oriented Pet Cinematary podcast. On this week's episode, Chico and Wendy dig into the 1989 classic Pet Sematary before doing a deep dive into last year's (surprise) hit shark-attack thriller The Shallows. Along the way they shout-out some other animal-themed horror faves. As always, thanks for listening and Keep Screaming!
The potboiler Gothics of V.C. Andrews were beloved by adult women... and their tween daughters. Both Jack and Kate are new to the author's infamous tales of female woe, and they discuss what it's like to read her work for the first time during this discussion of Andrews' 1982 novel My Sweet Audrina. This claustrophobic tale of a girl raised with family secrets in the shadow of her dead sister proves to be a surprisingly traumatic experience for Kate who is forced to confront some of her darkest fears, including the horrors of inheriting someone else's kids. Here to read an especially sensational passage from the book is Wendy Mays, hostess of Pet Cinematary, the podcast dedicated to taking a deeper look at the role of animals in film. This is her first time reading the work of V.C. Andrews as well, and it turned out to be a much more difficult task than your hosts imagined to find a woman unfamiliar with these macabre little novels. How does the domestic nightmare world of My Sweet Audrina effect your hosts? Did V.C. Andrews' life experiences add to the intensity of her stories? What were your hosts reading as tweens? Why did tween girls love these depressing forays into mental illness and isolation so much? Find out all this and more on this episode of Bad Books for Bad People.
