Madlab Founder Craig Patterson, spent ten years living in a basement apartment, working 6 days a week with his coaches and best friends to figure out a business model where the clients didn't leave, the coach could make $100,000 a year and the gym owner can earn 20% profit, reduce their headaches and have a passive income stream for decades to come. Then, for the next ten years, he worked with his wife and global team to ensure that Madlab's business system could be repeated by gym owners and coaches regardless of location or market size. In this episode of Playwright's Spotlight I speak to Los Angeles based playwright and actor Trey Nichols. In addition to playwriting, Trey runs a series of playwriting workshops throughout the year. Our conversation touches on various aspects of the craft including - learning through acting, one's inspirations, and playwriting classes as well as using the past for exposition versus achieving an objection. We also touch upon violence under language, the benefits of breathing space in a piece, the wounded villain vs the anti-hero, economics in playwriting, soul changing, struggles as a beginning playwright, one note scenes, workshops, reworking the same pages, creating art from life, and the controversy of politics preventing art. It's certainly a broad topic episode that's sure to be enlightening. Enjoy!Trey Nichols is a playwright, actor, and script consultant based in Los Angeles, California. He is a longtime member of Moving Arts, an award-winning Los Angeles-based theatre dedicated to the development and production of new plays. For twelve years, he served as the theatre's Literary Director, moderating the company's Playreading Series and playing a vital role in the development of new plays. He has also served as a dramaturg for the the company's signature new play development program, MADLab. He is also a literary consultant for playwriting and screenwriting contests and fellowships. He is on board of the Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights (ALAP) and produces the annual In Our Own Voices Playreading Series. His plays include Find Brother, A Lesson in Proper Bow-fluffing Technique, and The Meadows. To view the video format of this episode, visit the link below -https://youtu.be/Y75LUunnPv4Links to sites and resources mentioned in this episode - Moving Arts & MADLab -www.movingarts.orgAlliance of Los Angeles Playwrights -https://www.laplaywrights.orgWicked Lit -https://unboundproductions.orgContact information for Trey Nichols -Website -www.treynichols.netTwitter - @treynicholsFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/treynichIG - @therealtreynicholsWebsites and socials for James Elden, Punk Monkey Productions and Playwright's SpotlightPunk Monkey Productions - www.punkmonkeyproductions.comPLAY Noir -www.playnoir.comPLAY Noir Anthology –www.punkmonkeyproductions.com/contact.htmlJames Elden -Twitter - @jameseldensauerIG - @alakardrakeFB - fb.com/jameseldensauerPunk Monkey Productions and PLAY Noir - Twitter - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoirla IG - @punkmonkeyprods - @playnoir_la FB - fb.com/playnoir - fb.com/punkmonkeyproductionsPlaywright's Spotlight -Twitter - @wrightlightpod IG - @playwrights_spotlightPlaywriting services through Los Angeles Collegiate Playwrights Festivalwww.losangelescollegiateplaywrightsfestival.com/services.htmlSupport the showSupport the show
Craig Patterson, the founder of Madlab School of Fitness in Vancouver, Canada, and the Madlab Group, is no stranger to my podcast or controversy. Craig was around during the OG, startup days of CrossFit. He knows where the bodies are buried and he's kept a lot of what knows to himself over the years as he's grown his own unique model for developing professional coaches and profitable gyms. Well, Craig came on to discuss what's been on his mind and our discussion certainly won't disappoint anyone who wants a deeper look as to how the CrossFit/microgym industry ended up where it is today. Madlab has published a few resources for microgym owners below, highly recommend checking them out. https://madlabgroup.com/pt-first-ebook-home https://madlabgroup.com/nine-laws-ebook-home www.madlabgroup.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wtfgymtalk/message
Today on our show we are talking to Craig Patterson, aka Patty. Patty is the owner of Madlab School of Fitness (where Caron coaches) and the CEO of Madlab Business Group, where Patty and his team have been working tirelessly to fix and professionalize the broken fitness industry and to educate coaches on how to have an actual career in the fitness industry. The Madlab apprenticeship program (of which Caron has gone through in her journey to be a full time coach) is accredited by the province of British Columbia. We've reached the end of our journey through time with the final installment of the Fear Street Trilogy: Fear Street 1666. In the exciting conclusion, we learn the truth of Sarah Fier and her gal pal Hannah. Was Sarah the witch they say she was, or was she merely another victim of the Shadyside Curse? We also talk about Stormy's exciting adventures as a college professor, and Sam continues to schill her mediocre play--which premiers October 7, 2021 in Columbus, OH at MadLab theatre. Very exciting. Boy do we have a Founder Friday for you! Today we get to talk with the founder of MadLab Coffee in L.A., Andrew Sinclair. Andrew has been in coffee for over a decade going from an enthusiast to barista, head barista, manager, then owner and operator all before he started MadLab in 2015. Mad Lab's mission is to love people a whole lot more, instead of a whole lot less and to push everyone that encounters our coffee, to be the person they needed when they were younger. These mantras are the compass for how they present themselves and practice business with their everyday customers and thier partners that become our friends and family. In today's conversation we will be exploring Andrew's unique path into the coffee world and the peaks and valleys that mad him and his company what they are today. This is one of the most encouraging, passionate, and genuine interviews to date and serves as a real dose of inspiration to put integrity and people at the center of all we do. We cover: The difficulty of being in hospitality in LA. Becoming a barista, manager, owner Looking after people first Viewing things as opportunities Serving the needs of the neighborhood Flag planters vs hometown roasters Adventures in learning to roast Our hospitality and staff care mindset Taking over an existing space at the right time How the homeless community saved MadLab Coffee MadLab service mantras and the importance of mentorship Why it's not about money Links: www.madlab.co MadLab on Instagram Related Episodes: 045 : Simple, Powerful Hospitality w/ Philip Turner 232 : Founder Friday w/ Blew Kind of Fanny Lou's Porch 129 : Founder Friday w/ Casey & Jeremy Miller of The Mudhouse, St. Louis, MO 075 : Founder Friday w/Jill Killen of Cloud City Coffee, Seattle Washington 107 : Kyle Glanville & Charles Babinski of G&B Coffee and Go Get em Tiger Visit our amazing Sponsors! www.prima-coffee.com/keys www.pacficfoodservice.com

This week #onthebeat, I'm talking to Stacy Osei-Kuffour! Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, Stacy Osei-Kuffour is an Emmy-winning writer, playwright, and actress. Born to a Chicago-native mother and a Ghanaian-born father, Stacy grew up with a love for storytelling. Her goal as an artist is to bring untold stories to the stage and screen, stories that challenge our political, societal, and stereotypical views of the Black experience. Her passion led her to a BFA in drama from NYU and an MFA in playwriting from Hunter College. Her previous plays include: Dirty Blood, Animals (which received an Irv Zarkower Award), The Pearl and The Black Sea (which received an Honorable Mention in The Kilroy's 2015 List), and Hang Man (which received an Honorable Mention in The Kilroy's 2017 List and a production at The Gift Theatre in Chicago). Stacy was also involved in Los Angeles' Ensemble Studio Theatre (EST), Youngblood, MADLAB, and the Nashville Repertory Theatre's Ingram Play Lab alongside Christopher Durang. She has been the recipient of the MacDowell Colony Fellowship and PLAY LA's Humanitas Prize. As of late, Stacy has transitioned into television writing where she has received her first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for her work on PEN15, shared with the series creators Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle. Most recently, Stacy served as a Writer and Story Editor for HBO's critically-acclaimed series and Emmy winning series, Watchmen. We talk about: how growing up in a "weird" town helped to shape her writer's voice how she gets her ideas out of her head and into the universe character and world building exercises look differently in the playwriting world vs. TV/film her experience in the Watchmen writer's room and more! After earning his Mechanical Engineering degree, working for two Fortune 100 companies in business development, starting a Green Building Design Firm from scratch and selling it, Patty decided to try his hand in the fitness industry. Patterson was a true pioneer in the early years of Crossfit - so early that when in Vancouver, Glassman slept in Patty's bed and Patty took the couch. Greg was Patty's mentor from 2004-2011 and has dedicated his life to professionalizing the fitness industry so coaches and owners can make the same living as engineers. Patty is the CEO of The Madlab Group and the owner of the Madlab School of Fitness in Vancouver, BC. The school has a strong staff of professional coaches (3 have been there for over 12 years) and a great gm. The place runs itself so he spends his days working with gym owners and coaches around the world and tormenting his staff at MLG with his endless rants...
