What a CreepSeason 19, Episode 9The Station Nightclub Fire On Thursday, February 20, 2003, at 11:07 pm, the band Great White-headed onto the stage of the East Warwick, Rhode Island rock club The Station with a blast of pyrotechnic sparks. Singer Jack Russell quickly observed that the stage and ceiling were catching fire, and the crowd of over 460 people was told to leave the building. Within 6 minutes, the building was engulfed in flames killing 100 people (the youngest was 18) and injuring 230 others. Book Vs. Movie: HairsprayThe 1988 John Waters Movie Vs. the 2007 Adaptation“Musicals in March”The Margos continue their look at “Musicals in March” with the John Waters classic Hairspray, which started with the 1988 movie starring Rikki Lake, Divine, and Debby Harry. Based on his experiences of being a fan of the 1957-1964 Baltimore teen dance TV program--The Buddy Deane Show, Waters was a huge fan of R&B music. On the Buddy Deane show, the dancers were integrated, unlike Dick Clark's American Bandstand, which was based out of Philadelphia at the same time. Baltimore Magazine April 1985 by John Waters "Ladies & Gentleman: The Nicest Kids in Town!”Being a self-described “Super Fan” of the show, the director has a well-known career as an avant-garde-loving and bizarre artist who loves things that are in bad taste. His interest in something as wholesome as Buddy Deane made him think about writing a more accessible film about a group of teen dancers/local TV stars who fight racism and oppression with their love of music and dance. Given a modest budget of $2.8 million, the film was a box office hit, and the critics loved this new era of John Waters with even bigger hits in the 90s Cry-Baby & Serial Mom. Waters continues to write and direct his work and is very popular as an actor who appears in everything from Law & Order to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisles. In 2002, the musical version premiered in Seattle with music and lyrics from Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and the book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. What a CreepSeason 19, Episode 5“Stockholm Syndrome”Real diagnosis or just sexist trash?On Thursday, August 23, 1973, a convicted felon Jan-Erik Olsson entered the Kreditbanken Bank in Stockholm, Sweden (technically Norrmalmstrong); he was wearing a wig, painted his eyebrows black, pulled out a submachine gun, and yelled in English with an American accent “the party has begun!” He fired several shots into the ceiling, announced this was a robbery, and ordered people to the ground. A silent alarm alerted the police, and two officers showed up (one of them unarmed.) Ollson shot one of the officers in his hand while the other was ordered to sit in a chair and sing “Lonesome Cowboy” while taking four hostages into a vault. Six days later, the entire group, including convicted criminal Clark Olofsson, came out of the bank sacred, dehydrated, and in fear for their lives. They were all scared of the cops, and the kidnap victims had so much sympathy they hugged the captors before being taken to the hospital. All refused to testify against their kidnappers and said they felt more terrified of being harmed by the police than the criminals who held them for days at gunpoint. The term “Stockholm Syndrome” or, more accurately, Norrmalmstrong Syndrome” was created by Nils Bejerot (a criminologist and psychiatrist), who theorized that victims come to love their kidnappers as a coping mechanism. This would also be the basis of other labels that pathologize and often discredit victims, like trauma bonding (or TROW-MAh, according to Jamie Lee Curtis), battered wife syndrome, and why women seem to pick abusive men. Over the years, the bank heist and kidnapping situation has been revisited and revised to show a complete picture of what happened in these six days and why Stockholm Syndrome might be a false theory. In short, it's a creepy diagnosis meant to show women how weak they are under pressure. We think it is bullshit. Book Vs. Movie: Ma Rainey's Black BottomThe August Wilson Play Vs. the 2021 Movie Pittsburgh native August Wilson (1945-2005) is one of the most successful playwrights of the 20th Century; with a collection of works that came to be known as The Pittsburgh Cycle, he won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice in his career and was inducted into American Theater Hall of Fame in 2006. His 1984 work Ma Rainey's Black Bottom is the subject of today's episode. Gertrude Pridgett (Ma Rainey's birth name) was dubbed the “Mother of the Blues” for her outrageous stage presence and ability to hold audiences in her trance. The Blues being one of America's native art forms, the combination of the gospel with jazz music enticed the world with the earliest recordings featuring African American culture and is revered to this day. Rainey learned the ropes of show business through her husband “Pa Rainey” and was a mentor to a young Bessie Smith. Wilson's 1984 play is a fictional account of Rainey attending a recording of her work at a Chicago studio in 1927. By this time in her career, her known toughness and business acumen were legendary, and when she takes center stage in the story--it's hard to take your eyes off her. The studio musicians (Levee, Toledo, Cutler, and Slow Drag) watch her handle recording executives getting rich from her talent. The older group members want to warn young Levee of the harsh realities of the early 20th-century world. The 2021 film is the final film for Chadwick Boseman, who plays Levee Green, and the Netflix production is dedicated to his memory. Book Vs. Movie: DuelThe Richard Matheson Short Story Vs. the Steven Spielberg TV Movie In 1971, a 24-year-old budding director named Steven Spielberg was given a story by his assistant. This fiction story appeared in a recent issue of Playboy magazine, written by one of his favorite Twilight Zone writers, Richard Matheson. The story Duel was about a man driving through the California desert being chased by an evil trucker with a big rig with murder on its mind. Matheson based it on an incident on November 22, 1963, when he was tailgated by a truck on his way home from a gold game. For years he tried to sell the story to TV but was turned down everywhere he pitched. To prepare for the short story, he drove from Los Angeles to Ventura, California, and recorded everything he saw. Our protagonist is never named in the story, and we have no idea why the driver is chasing him. Spielberg was looking to direct TV movies that were giant rating machines then and managed to get the gig with a $450,000 budget and only ten days to make it all work. In the end, he made a masterpiece that became a sensation in the early 1970s, including a 90-minute version released in Europe soon after. Featured on everything from Rachel Maddow's show on MSNBC to Bill Maher on HBO and even on Late Night with Seth Meyer. Many people on the left claimed him as one of “theirs” who speaks truth to power with bravado, and some of his best-selling books tackled the financial shenanigans of Goldman Sachs, the idiocy of Congress, the march to the war in Iraq built on shabby evidence, and how the media is dividing Americans. Nowadays, he is a popular substack creator who rakes in millions writing about anything he damn well pleases. This is any writer's dream, but he has seemed to switch from fighting power and corruption to fawning over billionaires and power-mad lunatics like Vladamir Putin. He now writes about Trump being a victim of a press that hates him for no reason and recently was part of the big Twitter reveal from past Creep--Elon Musk. So what did he uncover? Why does he feel like a victim of woke culture? We will get into it today. Also, I had an encounter with Matt Taibbi, who did some shitty journalism for a magazine I worked for and maligned me in his column for no fucking reason except he a burr up his ass about a topic he is not an expert on and tried to throw me under the bus. For 20 years, I have been hearing friends tell me how awesome and brave he is, and I have to tell them my story and remind them he is a punk-ass bully with no genuine affection for the topic he covers and wants to swing his dick around.
