Miyazaki's films are officially a mainstay on the Best Seat podcast these days, but it's always nice to have a little debate once in a while about movies that never really get any worse than "really good" - Kiki's Delivery Service is a charming tale about a girl who learns how to live on her own, make a living for herself, meet new people, and find her niche in a brave new world. It paints a world where everyone's friendly, life is comfortable, and every smile makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside :) Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

Philip discusses the 1989 film from writer/director/producer Hayao Miyazaki, 'Kiki's Delivery Service,' based on the 'Mary Poppins'-esque children's novel by Eiko Kadono. Kiki is a witch-in-training who, according to tradition, must go off and prove herself upon turning 13. She takes her trusty cat Jiji, her radio, and her mother's broom to find a city in this fictionalized European setting where she can set up shop. Naturally, getting settled in isn't the easiest thing for an adolescent girl, but luckily this society is accepting of witches and magic, allowing Kiki to start, you guessed it, her very own delivery service. Hop on your brooms and fly away for a year with us as we revisit Kiki's Delivery Service. Mark makes a really weird Tombo connection, wonders 'where all the witches at?', and just can't stop pointing out children's underpants; Karl suspects a negligent mother, provides filler for Sara's googling, and tears apart this film's understanding of plane physics; and Sara refuses to weigh in on the heated Sub vs Dub debate, plays a long game of 'did you recognize this voice', and really flubs our plugs. Enjoy!

We sit down to discuss the 1989 film Kiki's Delivery Service. Not going to lie, it's hot, and we're running on empty here. Enjoy!
Rachael and Faye from Her Dark Materials return to Flixwatcher remotely to review Rachael’s choice Kikis’ Delivery Service. Kiki’s Delivery Service is a 1989 Studio Ghibli animated film, written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It tells the story of a young witch, Kiki, who moves to a new town to find herself and master her witchery. With her cat Jiji, she starts helping out at a bakery, using her flying skills to deliver special packages. Beware of watching Kiki’s Delivery Service on Netflix - the original subtitled version is much better than the sub-par subbed Disney version. The original version has some wonderful Japanese pop from Yumi Matsutoya and the voicing of Jiji affects the tone and actions so much that it changes the character completely. Kiki’s Delivery Service is rare for an animated children film in that the primary goal isn’t to meet a prince or boy and be married - it’s all about her finding herself and honing her skills so she can become the best version of herself. Tombo is merely an annoyance - not the ideal. The majority of the supporting characters are all strong females too. Ultimately Kiki has a talking cat and who wouldn’t want one of them? Scores [supsystic-tables id=191] Kiki’s Delivery Service scores well on recommendability - less highly on the repeat viewing due to the sheer number of Studio Ghibli films out there to watch. A slightly lower engagement score means Kiki’s Delivery Service scores 3.72 overall. The first Studio Ghibli for Flixwatcher, we hope we’ll review some more! What do you guys think? [School of Movies 2020] The first anime we have ever covered on a Main Event show (if you listen to our 2017 Scott Pilgrim episode you'll find it starts with a lengthy explanation as to why), but depending on how anime fans react to this one we might do more. It's a simple tale of a little witch who moves to the big city to start her own business. Kiki is goodhearted and well-meaning but faces many challenges along the way. This charming basket of innocence is delivered to us by master director Hayao Miyazaki, and may seem twee and super-sweet on the surface, but there's something to be learned from what happens. I also talk at length about how in 2010 the American language track was altered by Studio Ghibli themselves for release in HD, and what that did to the film. This episode was commissioned by our two guests and Aaron Good Brendan Agnew of Cinapse @BLCAgnew Theo Leigh of The New Century Multiverse
