Of all of DC's obscure characters outside the Bat family, two of Matt's absolute favorites are the Elongated Man, Ralph Dibny, and his wife, Sue. Inspired by Nick and Nora Charles from Dashiell Hammett's novel, The Thin Man, Ralph and Sue are a bantering, loving couple who solve mysteries. They are, as the kids at one point or another said, couple goals. And ignoring the ignominy of Identity Crisis, Ralph and Sue made it through any problem with a smile, a wink and the twitch of a nose. Being a detective himself, you'd think Batman and Elongated Man team-ups would be mysteries. This week, well, two out of three ain't bad. Our month of classic mystery writers continues with Dashiell Hammett - the former Pinkerton operative whose celebrated characters include Sam Spade, the Continental Op, and Nick and Nora Charles. Radio shows based on his sleuths were some of the most popular on radio until Hammett became a casualty of the Red Scare. We'll hear some of his stories recreated for radio: an adaptation of "The Thin Man" from The Lux Radio Theatre (originally aired on CBS on June 8, 1936; "Two Sharp Knives" - adapted for Suspense (originally aired on CBS on June 7, 1945); "The Maltese Falcon" recreated on Academy Award (originally aired on CBS on July 3, 1946); and "The Critical Author Caper" - a loose adaptation of his novel The Dain Curse from The Adventures of Sam Spade (originally aired on CBS on August 15, 1948). Plus, we'll hear an original Hammett radio creation - private eye Brad Runyon - aka The Fat Man in his debut adventure "The Nineteenth Pearl" (originally aired on ABC on January 21, 1946).

What happens when an accent choice derails an SVU where the initial crime is wrapped up in an open-and-shut murder at minute 19 and becomes a bizarre cold-case-cum-morality-play sans benefit of flashback? Well, the Randomizer selected “Persona” (Season 10, Episode 8), so Adam and Josh found out the hard way. For far from the first time in the run of Munch My Benson, a foreign-born actor plays fast and loose with a wavering accent. This time, the offender was two-time Oscar-nominee Brenda Blethyn, whose presence pulls a certain big gun down from the bench to settle a 34-year-old score. With the Unit and Liv in some serious transitional waters, IAB Lieutenant Ed Tucker comes in and muddies those waters up something fierce as he draws Liv's new roommate/boyfriend Brian Cassidy into an undercover sting for the Rat Squad to earn him a gold star and re-entry to the hallowed halls of the proper NYPD. Of course, this being the Warren Leight years, Benson and her relationship are put through the ringer, as the 12th Precinct is as dirty as it gets and Cassidy gets caught up in some pretty dicey stuff with a scuzzy cop and his sad and desperate partner. In this exercise in somewhat effective stunt-casting, Stabler gets pitted against his untethered analog, a rage-fueled annihilator of tween girls played by erstwhile star actor Matthew Modine. Yes, this week, the Munchie Boys took on “Rage” (SVU S6E17). In a structurally odd episode that pits rager against rager in a ticking-clock, nearly locked-room scenario until it suddenly isn't and renders much of what preceded moot, Stabler tries to nab the one who got away while confronting his own anger management issues. In this Friday bonus episode, we'll hear the Lux Radio Theatre adaptation of the sequel to The Thin Man - the appropriately titled After the Thin Man. William Powell and Myrna Loy are back as Nick and Nora Charles in this second adventure (originally aired on CBS on June 17, 1940).

Our month of classic Hollywood romances continues with frequent co-stars William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles - husband and wife detectives who trade quips and down drinks as they investigate a murder in The Thin Man. We'll hear them, along with co-star Maureen O'Sullivan, in Suspense thrillers and a Lux Radio Theatre recreation of the Dashiell Hammett detective story. We'll hear Ms. O'Sullivan in "The Black Shawl" (originally aired on CBS on July 27, 1944). Ms. Loy stars in "Library Book" (originally aired on CBS on September 20, 1945). Mr. Powell headlines "Give Me Liberty" (originally aired on CBS on October 21, 1948). Finally, Powell and Loy are Nick and Nora in a radio adaptation of The Thin Man (originally aired on CBS on June 8, 1936).

Front Row Classics welcomes authors Kim Luperi and Danny Reid to chat about the films essential to an understanding of the Pre-Code era of film. Kim and Danny recently penned "Pre-Code Essentials: Must-See Cinema from Hollywood's Untamed Era, 1930-1934" The book chronicles the history and context of the Hollywood production along with a selection of films that best represent the era.  "Pre-Code Essentials: Must-See Cinema from Hollywood's Untamed Era, 1930-1934" is available now from TCM and Running Press wherever books are sold.    Kim Luperi wrote her undergraduate thesis on the censorship battle of Baby Face (1933) and never looked back. Currently, she curates the @precodedotcom Instagram account and is a freelance writer for TCM. She's written for AFI Fest, the American Cinematheque, and MovieMaker Magazine and covers classic film screenings at ISeeADarkTheater.com. Kim lives with her partner in sunny Los Angeles.   Danny Reid is a librarian who has been writing about pre-Code Hollywood for over a decade at pre-Code.com. His published writing includes Murder on Celluloid: A Companion to the Hildegarde Withers Film Series and acting as editor for the essay collection Thoughts on the Thin Man. Danny has introduced pre-Code film screenings around the world and appeared on podcasts to discuss the era. He currently lives in Germany with his wife, two kids, and three very silly dogs.  

This week we watched an aptly titled episode which follows a series of rape allegations against a recently retired basketball star.In addition to classic Warren Leight Era racism, this is an episode in which Olivia Benson, improbably, thinks it's cool if people are falsely accused of rape in a shameless bid to end a black man's endorsement deal. We thought it would be neat to look at the holiday season under a lens, and think about the “comfort games” that come with the season. Think about all of the arguments or justifications you’ve heard for whether or not a film or album is a Xmas-coded production? Like, beyond all of the Die Hard or The Thin Man shitposts, there are pieces of media that folks just associate with the holidays, even when they’re not centrally focused on the jolly time—and some choice picks that don’t even do that much. We all assign these arbitrary associations between literature and film around yuletides and such, so why not video games too? To ensure we really get some spirit out of this topic, we’ve asked some wonderful folks to appear on the episode, and give us their thoughts on the matter, as well as the games that they associate with the season of giving. The Randomizer (episode.lol) spat out the final episode of the disastrous Michael Chernuchin Era, which meant the Munchie Boys were force-fed the final part of some serialized content. Of course, here, this means we have long-time series regulars acting entirely uncharacteristically, including characters we'd known for 20 years. Perhaps more importantly, this episode eschews all common sense, asking society to act insanely in addition to its characters.
