Emma & Katie get nostalgic and talk about the 2004 Millennial touchstone Garden State. We get into Manic Pixie Dream Girls, Harry Knowles, The Graduate, platonic makeouts, lots of college party talk, and of course, Bilbo Baggins, The Greatest Hobbit of Them All.Also: Y'all, I cut 15 whole minutes out of this episode, this movie inspired a lot of tangents.
Ana and Dan wish you a happy Valentine's Day, this podcast will erase itself as it plays. Revisiting this scifi art-house classic after 20 years reveals some of its deep flaws and something about Young Dan's wistful notions about bookish young men and Manic Pixie Dream Girls. If you loved this episode's saltiness about saccharine tales, perhaps it would make a good gift for the sober sweetheart of your dreams? Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Our Superdelegate patron tier voted for us to discuss GARDEN STATE (2004), a millennial touchstone that may or may not have "aged well." We discuss Manic Pixie Dream Girls, whether or not the Shins are "cringe," and our own lost youths. PATREON-EXCLUSIVE EPISODE - https://www.patreon.com/posts/111698763
Summary "A sadness of men." We've reached the final movie of our Manix Pixie Dream Girl series and realize what connects these movies are sad men of the early 2000s, not quirky women. Summary "I'm impossible to forget, but I'm hard to remember." We have come to the third movie in our Manic Pixie Girl series, and some say this is the movie where it all began: Elizabethtown. Is she a Quirky Muse or a Flat Character? Today we are diving headfirst into the world of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl. We'll unpack the origins of the trope, coined by film critic Nathan Rabin in his review of "Elizabethtown" (remember Kirsten Dunst's airport twirling?), and explore its evolution through Zooey Deschanel's rise to fame. We'll discuss how movies like "Garden State" and “500 Days of Summer” impacted the trope (and indie music), the merits of the MPDG, explore the overlap with the Pick Me Girl and debate whether Red era Taylor Swift was a full-blown MPDG or simply the queen of twee. (00:00) – What is the Manic Pixie Dream Girl? (10:42) – Nathan Rabin ate with the term “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” (19:14) – 500 Days of Summer (31:53) – Was Taylor Swift Twee? Max and Cassandra's exploration of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl continues with the film that started it all: Elizabethtown (2005). Does this flick deserve all the vitriol? Is Kirsten Dunst's Clair actually a manic pixie dream girl at all? All this and more!Patreon.com/QuillAndFilmMeasuringFlicksPodcast@gmail.com

Listen in as we welcome the brilliant Nicole Eva, also known as Evasive, for a lively discussion about the manic pixie dream girl trope in film and TV. With her keen eye for movie analysis, we examine this problematic trope, its harmful effects, and its prevalence in the media. Amidst our discourse, we touch on recent controversies in the entertainment industry, such as a questionable joke on SNL, the show's toxic work environment, and the relentless pressure to produce a new show every week. Our conversation doesn't stop there. Together, we tackle the issues of shows and movies being abruptly removed from streaming platforms, causing disappointment and frustration among viewers. We also delve into the decline in quality of fashion and costuming in some shows, highlighting the need for historical accuracy. Through this, we express our collective disappointment with the lack of transparency in the industry and its impact on us as viewers. We end our discussion by examining the portrayal of manic pixie dream girls in films such as 500 Days of Summer and Ruby Sparks. We unpack the complexities of this trope, from its origins with male writers to its subversion by female writer Zoe Kazan in Ruby Sparks. By offering alternative endings and analyzing the trope's impact on relationships and gender roles, we aim to bring a fresh perspective to this well-worn trope. So, tune in for an enlightening conversation about film, TV, and the roles we see on our screens. (0:00:05) - SNL and Warner Bros. This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas get in a car wreck, and decide to off themselves. Not before leaving their minds to be cryogenically frozen and set to lucid dream mode for 150 years. It's WEEK 3 of 2 THOUGHTS 2 DEEP TOO : TOKYO DRIFT, and we are scratching our heads to Cameron Crowe's 2001 follow-up to Almost Famous, the very weird, maybe underrated, but perhaps justly forgotten, VANILLA SKY, starring Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, and Jason Lee. We weren't scratching our heads trying to figure out what was going on in this confusing movie, as it pretty much explains everything at the end, for better or worse. But we are scratching our heads to why it exists in the first place.Tom Cruise goes off on one in this vanity picture, that mirrors a lot of his own star status, and is making a lot of interesting choices with his "being bad" (giving a lot of Jim Carrey) that you wouldn't see him do today. Along with this, we get instances of Manic Pixie Dream Girls, Scientology buddies, disfigurements, a ton of Pop Culture references and hidden Easter Eggs, and Cameron Diaz out acting the whole cast. The film made a ton of money, and did okay with the critics, but for some reason it's one that no one talks about any more. What happened to Cameron Crowe's career? Did Jason Lee and Tom Cruise ever hang out before this film? Is Tom Cruise a good actor? We attempt to ask these questions, no one has answers to... in our 200th Episode!!!“Every passing minute is another chance to turn it all around.”If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It's 2023 and Heaven is back from hiatus to deliver a super-sized episode! Oudere millennials dweepten ermee. This 2009 movie is a classic in the rom-com genre, but it is not a love story
Ive been tearing around in my fucking nightgown / 24/7 Sylvia Plath, sjunger Lana Del Rey i Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have. Där räkningarna aldrig sparkas in under någon byrå utan faktiskt betalas i tid. Och dö var ju något som bekant något Sylvia the girl who wanted be god gjorde mycket bra. Hey guys! Today's episode is a real treat. We got on the mic today with our good friend Maria to uncover debatably one of medias worst tropes, MPDG. This episode is pretty lighthearted (no matter how deep we get into it lol) and towards the end, is simplified into what it feels like to be put in a categorized box. We hope you enjoy it! Manic Pixie Dream Girls - can't live with them, can't make a movie without them. Lauren and Francesca talk about the origins of this trope and rate their favorite MPDGs.
Why do people spit in mouths? Why do white people clap on the 1 and the 3? If Boka and Garrett and signature colognes, what would they smell like? These questions and more will be answered on this episode of Bromance Podcast covering Music and Lyrics! This episode has everything—Boka and Garrett continuing not to understand Drew Barrymore's rom com appeal, western appropriation of Buddhism, and some unnecessary slander of British codebreaker Alan Turing. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bromancepod/support
Is Rachel Elizabeth Dare the blue print for Manic Pixie Dream Girls, in a good way? Why is Ethan Nakamura evil but cool? Trisha and Ambar expose themselves as performative servants of the Male Gaze and call out the Cool Girls, Mean Girls, and Manic Pixie Dream Girls of media. They also share their personal experiences in those tropes and ultimately conclude that self-awareness is embarrassing. (CW: eating disorders, body image, sexual trauma)
Episode 207: Nervous Timid Goth Boys vs Manic Pixie Dream Girls - How a Single Trope can Shift Narrative Preference Different tropes are designed to appeal to different readers and viewers, and, as the dragons have said on many occasions, there is nothing inherently wrong with tropes. Why not give your audience more of what it wants? However there are tropes that are packaged in such a way as to close the narrative of a story to perspectives other than the default, and do so under the guise of providing a strong female lead or co-lead. These tropes can be damaging and need some re-engineering. This week, Jules and Madeleine take a look at one of the most infamous character tropes - the Manic Pixie Dream Girl - and it's possible antithesis - the Nervous Timid Goth Boy. On the slab this episode - Scott Pilgrim, Weird Science, The Belgariad by David Eddings and many more. Title Music: Ecstasy by Smiling Cynic

As we enter our twelfth night, Steve sits down with comedy powerhouse Charlie Vero-Martin to weave a magical evening of whiskey, laughs and shortbread. Charlie brings a tenacious initiative and preparation to the table, managing to subvert and also embody: "Enchantment". In a rambling, boozy, giggly, left-field chat, we are transported through time itself; encountering Scottish witches of yesteryear, an alcoholic Eve in the Garden Of Eden, and unwillingly-diagnosed Manic Pixie Dream Girls in present day. Can we really cast a spell with our words? Is being bewitching the highest praise or an excuse to throw blame? Are we truly helpless against the charms of others or are we just passing the buck? Should our love lives be about magical moments or a shared pragmatism? And who the hell is this Baxter guy and why does he look so sad? Charlie Vero-Martin is a whip-smart seasoned performer who deals in character comedy, stand-up, acting, improv, sketch, and dance. She is bringing her unique mix of historical character comedy and stand-up back to this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival with "Scrapbook". Go see it at The Gilded Balloon, from 31st-25th (not on the 12th), and experience her moxy for yourself. Zach Braff’s Garden State is a very personal one for Tony and Nadia, as they both loved this movie when they were in high school, purchased it on DVD, and now have to reckon with the insufferable, excruciating mess that the film actually is. Nadia shares stories from women who have been treated like Manic Pixie Dream Girls. This is the most singing we’ve done on any of the podcast episodes so far.

We shoulda done this episode in our Katharine Hepburn voices, ‘cause we’re talking as fast as we can to keep up with Howard Hawks over here! Wendy Mays of the Pet Cinematary podcast (#LadyPodSquad) joins us for a conversation about the 1938 classic screwball comedy Bringing Up Baby, starring Hepburn and Cary Grant and directed by Howard Hawks. Listen in as we attempt to explain (and remember) this crazy plot, tell silly stories from the set, and dive into Hepburn’s role as one of the earliest Manic Pixie Dream Girls in cinema. Is Baby a human baby? (Nope.) Do Luke and Lorelai have a Grant and Hepburn dynamic? (Yep.) Would Kyla, Taylor, and Wendy like to hang out with a leopard? (Debatable.) If you want quirky women, look no further than this episode where I debate the Manic Pixie Dream Girl title given to Kirsten Dunst and her red hat in Elizabethtown. I also complain about Amelie sticking her hand in things and grinning from under her bangs. I miss Orlando Bloom.
Remember when everybody loved Garden State? Strange as it seems, Zach Braff's directorial debut was widely praised on release - so why has its reputation curdled so dramatically in recent years? Louise Ball joins us this week to discuss Manic Pixie Dream Girls, alarming animal cruelty and to help pitch the sequels that none of us actually want to see... Released in 2004 at the height of Zach Braff's Scrubs fame, Garden State was a slow-burn box office success, grossing over $35 million against a $2.5 million budget, bouyed by a Grammy-winning soundtrack and enthusiastic reviews. Despite this initial success, the movie later attracted criticism for its ponderous exploration of mid-twenties ennui and the characterisation of Natalie Portman's female romantic lead as less a recognisable human being than an infantilised collection of infuriatingly self-conscious quirks. Is Garden State totally without merit? We didn't quite think so. In this episode we discuss some of the reasons the movie was initially so successful - as well as the many elements that have aged poorly in the cold light of 2018. In pitching our own sequels, one of us attempts to inject some excitement by splicing the cast with a modern sci-fi phenomenon with an equally iconic soundtrack, one of us digs into the appalling animal cruelty hinted at in the original film, and one of us decides to ditch the insufferable central duo altogether and allow some of the movie's most memorable supporting characters to take centre stage... ----- Beyond The Box Set is a top ten TV & Film podcast officially rated 'Binge Worthy' by Apple Podcasts.
