This week. it's Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction! Released on the 14th of October, 1994, this breakout classic is widely regarded as a masterpiece of non-linear storytelling. However, for our episode, we decided to change that and do the synopsis in chronological order. Does it change anything? Not really. But it's still a very good film! Got feedback? In anticipation of Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood, Bob and Brad throw it all the way back to 1994 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction. Despite being one of their favorite films, the guys are shocked at how difficult it is to discuss this non-linear story. Along the way, they talk about the film's central theme of redemption, the beauty of watching Christopher Walken craft a gross story, and Tarantino's underrated ability to get un-subtle actors to play subtle scenes. Meanwhile, they continue the Summer of Bourbon by pouring what may be Bob's favorite all-around whiskey, Weller Antique 107. This bourbon is similar to Pappy Van Winkle in its mash bill, and because of that similarity, is getting harder to find at retail prices. 0:00 - Intro and Initial Thoughts 28:20 - Weller Antique 107 Review 38:10 - Analysis and Final Thoughts Film & Whiskey Podcast. Welcome back to Geektown Radio, and this week we have a number of firsts! It's the first time for our new film reporter, Gray, to appear as co-host, and it's also the first time we've interviewed a film editor on the show!Tatiana S. Riegel is a highly experienced film & tv editor who has worked across a range of projects, from Quentin Tarantino's ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Jackie Brown’ to brilliant tv series like 'Game Of Thrones' and ‘House’, to movies such as ‘The Men Who Stare at Goats’, ‘There Will Be Blood’ and ‘The Finest Hours’. Her most recent project sees her reteam with longtime collaborator, director Craig Gillespie, on the darkly-comedic biopic ‘I, Tonya’.The film is a portrait of one of the most controversial figures in sports history, and follows Tonya Harding's story from her abusive childhood to her shocking figure-skating career, all the while maintaining a tone that strikes a careful balance between pitch-black comedy and real-life tragedy. As editor, it was up to Tatiana to balance the film’s complex moving parts, setting a pace for the ambitious story while giving both the drama and the humour room to shine. Her work in the film just recently earned her an American Cinema Editors nomination. Also On This Week's Show:Gray joins us in the co-host hot seat and we chat about the tv shows and films we've been watching including 'Early Man', 'Will & Grace', 'Black Mirror' and 'The Orville', and 'iZombie'.We take a look at all the latest tv & film news, including ‘The Walking Dead’ getting a new showrunner, Channel 4 adapting Gareth Edwards ‘Monsters’, and Anne Rice’s ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ series. We give you our recommendations for upcoming TV in the next 7 days. New on video store shelves and up for extensive discussion in this episode is... Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997) on Blu-ray - Both films making their debut on blu-ray, with Pulp Fiction getting a little extra love in the form of newly produced special features: New Interviews with the Cast and a Critic's Retrospective on the Movie's Place in Film History with Elvis Mitchel and Scott Foundas. The Honeymooners: Lost Episodes 1951-1957 - The Complete Restored Series on DVD - A 15-disc set running more than 3,000 minutes. It's everything a Honeymooner's fan could want. Really. There's 30 sketches in the set that have never been on DVD, 18 of which haven't been seen since they originally aired in the 1950s. It's $139.00, but all sorts of goodness. Poltergeist II (1986) on Blu-ray - John recalls the horrors of that "attack of the braces" scene. "A dental nightmare." Hero's Island (1961) on DVD - From the MGM Limited Edition Collection, starring James Mason and a young Harry Dean Stanton. Irvin Kirshner's Robocop 2 (1990) on Blu-ray - Featuring all those pre-CGI go-motion effects by the wizardly Phil Tippet. Manhunter (1986) on Blu-ray - Starring a young Stephen Lang (Avatar and Terra Nova) and featuring another psycho bad guy performance by Tom Noonan (Robocop 2) Vidal Sassoon: The Movie (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray - Who would have thought we'd enjoy this film? You've got to love the way Mr. Sassoon did Mia Farrow's hair for Rosemary's Baby, and this doc shows you how that transpired. Ken Burn's and Lynn Novick's Prohibition on DVD and Blu-ray - I'm 4-hours into this 6-hour doc (a 3-disc blu-ray set). Where did the time go? Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980) on Blu-ray - a film that must be seen again to be appreciated. This new Blu-ray offers some nice special features, including The Making of Dressed to Kill and An Appreciation by Keith Gordon Featurette, which is rather insightful. Click on the playback links and enjoy that show!
