A new Director Series at The Other BananaWe have long debated a series on director Bala. You could say that Bala is not Bala anymore and his films are increasingly becoming difficult to meaningfully engage with but, the Bala 1999-2010 was something else.A new voice broke out in Tamil cinema in 1999 with Sethu. One of the several assistants of Balu Mahendra who will go on to make a mark in the following years, Bala ushered in an auterist sensibility with unique technique, point of view, characters and settings. The Bala universe was instantly recognizable. In the first of the series, we begin with his debut in 1999 which not only kickstarted his career but also redeemed Vikram's career and pushed him into stardom. With one film, a new star actor as well as a star director were born. Listen on.ParticipantsAdityaAnanthaHariEdited by Anantha

Join host Joanne Carey as she chats with Special Guest: Gina Tse, Artistic Director International dance School, Stockholm, Sweden This episode of “Dance Talk” ® with Joanne Carey, is a part of an exciting series Joanne has created that is focusing on the work of Artistic Directors titled: Artistic Directors; "Creating the Torch: Legacy, Mission, Vision; Making and Keeping, History in the 21st Century" Within the series, several guests join Joanne to dive into the responsibility of carrying on the mission and legacy of well established and often world famous dance companies, dance institutions and academies as well as the journey of artistic directors who are forming and have created new dance companies and institutions; all whom are paving the way in the dance world, making their artistic mark for generations to come. In this episode, Joanne sits down, across time zones, with Gina Tse, to discuss Gina's artistic vision and the freedom of creating a dance organization from the ground up and in doing so is instilling the mission of "giving back — teaching from the heart to spread the joy of dance". By keeping the love of the art form, the well-being of her students, and the leadership of her staff at the forefront, Gina has taken both her extraordinary dance and theater background as well as her professional career as a principal dancer with the Royal Swedish Ballet, to create a school where the joy of artistry is nurtured and the vehicle of dance is used as the building blocks of life. Gina Tse began her ballet training at 3 years of age and commenced her pre-professional training at The Royal Ballet School in London seven years later. She was a dancer with English National Ballet before joining The Royal Swedish Ballet  in 2004. There, she was promoted to First Soloist in 2007 and Principal Dancer in 2011–– the same year she was awarded Dancer of the Year in Stockholm. She danced with Stockholm 59°North soloists and was also nominated for Benois de la Dance in Moscow at the Bolshoi Theatre in 2016. Gina has danced for The Swedish Royal Family on numerous occasions, including The Nobel Banquet, and has performed Swan Lake for the Opening of Parliament. Gina's instrumental role in the development of The International Ballet School and Arts Centre has been constant. From teaching 3 year olds the thrill of movement within classical dance steps, to preparing her pre-professionals and Trainee Professionals for coming careers at the world's leading ballet schools and companies, her infectious love of dance and performance is contagious. With a remarkable 100% graduate success rate, it's no surprise that Gina Tse and the IBS teaching staff are in demand. Students and professionals from near and far regularly turn to IBS for masterful preparatory ballet training, and IBS senior associates have won scholarships from Carina Ari Foundation, as well as Gold and Silver Medals at the AED International Dance Competition held in Italy. Gina and her staff have taught at numerous summer dance workshops and schools across the globe. The film is a truckload of Mysskin goodies, the Madras after dark shining through as the entire film is events over the course of a single night. It throws up and answers a lot of questions - what is right and what is wrong, good and evil with everything in between, how situations and decisions contextualized to the events determine more about oneself than we might assume. The film is ripe for both mining Mysskin's aesthetics and his philosophical musings. It might just be Mysskin's best film so far. To talk about the film, we have with us Angel Glady who wears many caps - actor, playwright, theatre activist, dancer etc. She plays the role of Bharati in Onaayum Aattukkuttiyum, credited as vanadevathai (forest fairy). She shares with us her thoughts on the film, working with Mysskin and some great anecdotes from the time of filming. Glady is joined by Deepauk, Anantha and Ashoka. Listen on.

It has music and score by K, who had joined us in our podcast for one of his films, Annayum Rasoolum. A lot of ideas Mysskin's films would grapple with found a winning combination here and therefore the decision to start with Yuddham Sei. CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of grief, mental illness, war, slavery, racism, white saviorism, racist propaganda. Here we are, ending our journey through Spielberg’s catalog on a film that’s got to be a sure-fire smash. It’s got an impeccable cast, a great screenwriter, and one of the most compelling people in history around which to build a story. Which is precisely why we’re so angry about this movie. Yes, it’s clearly Oscar bait, and yes, any story about Abraham Lincoln is going to read very, very hollow given the growing movement for racial justice in our country. But it’s the self-indulgent, sentimental and somber framing of a story that refuses to find any real humanity in its protagonist that really gets our goat here. We know Steven’s got a hell of an ego, but it’s never more on display than watching this way too self-important film. For a movie about one of the most interesting human case studies in our nation, there’s very little that we can learn about or empathize with the 16th President. He’s just a portrait in a room, and this is just a WIkipedia entry of a movie. We’re wrapping up with Spielberg’s flat biography of Lincoln on Macintosh & Maud Haven’t Seen What?! The early-to-mid 2000’s were not a banner time for filmmaking, across the board. Sure, there’s some diamonds in the rough, but blockbuster films of that 5-6 year period were all dark and gritty, overexposed and filtered with silver or blue lights. For some directors, it could yield great results - David Fincher made an entire career from that scheme. But we’re not talking about Fincher - we’re talking about the master of epic, sweeping, blockbuster shots, Steven Spielberg. And there’s not a lot about this movie that’s good. Steven definitely put in the effort to create a futuristic world for the characters to live in, but at what cost? Nobody is particularly great in this movie, including the master of charm and screen presence, Tom Cruise. And don’t get us started on the lackluster, wandering script with enough holes that you don't need a precog to see through them. Listener discretion is advised. We weren’t ready for this week’s movie, nor were we disappointed. Spielberg’s first “serious” film packs one hell of a punch, telling a Black story of incredibly complex trauma and survival in a way that’s incredibly difficult to ignore. There’s so many movies in recent years that try to accomplish the balance of emotional impact, stark, disturbing reality, and tenderness - but they all get that balance wrong. Yet this film gets it so, so right, in the best possible way. Spielberg is on top of his game here, fusing his quasi-magical brand of filmmaking with an incredibly powerful and at times brutal story. And it’s never to the detriment or sentimentalizing of Alice Walker’s classic novel. it just draws the audience ever closer, so that when the final moments pay off, you’re weeping with these characters because you too care so much about them. Spielberg’s second film was intended to be his motion picture debut, a passion project of his since making an adolescent film in the mid-60’s. In many ways, it’s his personal love letter to sci-fi, and there are moment of sublime beauty and awe in this film. You could probably just watch the last 35 minutes of the movie showing the moment where humans make contact with alien life, and leave a movie theater buzzing with joy. Except there’s an hour-and-a-half of movie before it, and that movie is pretty hit or miss. Steven has no lack of vision, it’s fair to say, but if there’s anything to learn from this film, it’s that Spielberg should stay away from writing movies, and that every director needs to take a couple months away from a film before trying to edit. Add to that technical complications completely unforeseen because, well, they were literally remaking the rules of cinema, and you’ve got one heck of a technical achievement that winds up being a bit of a bore. We are back with a new director series! For a long time, we've been mulling about a series on acclaimed director Padmarajan, who's made some of the best Malayalam films of the 1980s and remains an important name in Malayalam cinema of that era. We asked actress Kani Kusruti, the recent winner of the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in Biriyaani, what is a Malayalam classic that she'd love to revisit and talk about in our podcast. Padmarajan's Kallan Pavithran (1981), she said. And that was reason enough for us to begin a Director Series on Padmarajan. Kallan Pavithran starring Nedumudi Venu, Bharath Gopi, Subhashini, Beena and Adoor Bhasi is one of Padmarajan's early films based on a short story by the director. The film is about a petty thief Pavithran (Venu) and his nouveau riche status that has the town wondering what could be the reason behind his economic prosperity, especially Damayanthi (Beena), Bhama (Subhashini) and Mamachan (Bharath Gopi). Aditya and Deepauk join Kani Kusruti to talk about Kallan Pavithran, Padmarajan's craft and politics that evoke widely different reactions and some common themes and stylistic choices in his oeuvre. The film spurred a discussion on some of the grave injustices that have been meted out to the Dalit communities through the poor allocation/misappropriation of what is guaranteed to them by law.

Not only mythical in its approach but also somewhat mythical in its inception, making, release etc considering the talk about the film started in the early 2010s and the film finally released in October 2018. We are not done with it yet. The sequels are coming. Or so one hopes. Bonus: We have a special guest joining us later in the episode - actress Aishwarya Rajesh who plays Padma in the film. She talks about her role, her audition and the stellar career she has had so far. Listen on. Aishwarya Rajesh Interview from 45:45 minutes.

At The Other Banana, we are changing track a bit. Instead of arbitrarily choosing a film, we have chosen a director and will be focusing on all (or the best ones) their films, dedicating an episode to each of their works. We begin with one of the finest we've got in Tamil cinema - Vetri Maaran. In this episode, we talk about his debut, Polladhavan (2007), that also marked the beginning of an actor-director combo we cannot get enough of - Dhanush and Vetri Maaran. Listen on.

Hey everyone, I know it's been a hot minute and I am sorry to have vanished on you. I wish I could say that this is me announcing the triumphant return of the Bemused Podcast, but unfortunately things are still very much in flux. I will be posting something that will explain the situation more in the future, but now just know that everyone here at Bemused very much appreciates the love and support you have shown for the project.   This episode was recorded a couple months back as part of our Utah Theater series. My good friend Liz joins me to discuss her experience on being an actor/director/mad scientist of the arts. Don't worry, it will all make sense soon. Liz is incredibly thoughtful about how she approaches her work as an artist, and I thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent in studio.  I hope you enjoy this episode and as always, thank you again for your love and support.

I am joined by Director/Actor/Bear on a moped Jamie Rocha Pomeroy-Allan.  Jamie and I get a little more cerebral, and also a little silly, which is awesome. I loved hearing his unique perspective on theater and acting, having come up in London before relocating to Utah. This time around 007 has a license to disappoint and we get to the bottom of why this new Bond film has left critics and audiences shaken rather than stirred, and so on (more terrible humor lies in this very episode). We also discuss two new films set in the 1950s that feature wonderful performances from their respective actresses: Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan and Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. While the films share the same time period, they remain tonal opposites in all regards and we compare and contrast them accordingly. Then we begin our new Director Series on the great Billy Wilder with an in depth discussion about his 1944 noir classic, Double Indemnity. With January comes a slew of horrendous movies the studios typically try to sweep under the carpet.  That's not the case for the new Johnny Depp film Mortdecai, which barges into theaters this week with trumpets blasting.  The aggressive promotional campaign for this film neglects to point out that it is, indeed, a piece of crap.  We'll tell you all about it!  Then it's time to start a brand new installment of our Director Series, this time focusing on Robert Altman.  We discuss his 1971 anti-Western, McCabe & Mrs. Miller starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie.  And in case you were wondering, we'd never leave you without our picks for Weekly Movie Recommmendations.   02:48 – Mortdecai 22:21 - McCabe & Mrs. Miller 1:10:56 - Weekly Movie Recommendations
