In this gloriously unprofessional episode, the Bros and special guest Ty Rambo attempt a blind tasting showdown between high-end and low-end whiskeys — and chaos absolutely ensues. Featuring pours from Pappy Van Winkle, Old St. Nick, Booker's, E.H. Taylor, Buffalo Trace, Early Times, Evan Williams Bottled in Bond, and Longbranch — the night spirals into intense debates about tasting notes, trash talking, philosophical reflections on drinking culture, and the official coronation of our audience as The Unprofessionals. Some whiskeys soared, some legends crumbled... and at some point, microplastic cleanse theories and heated debates over driveway weeds somehow entered the chat. If you've ever wondered whether taste, price, and reputation actually matter—or if you just want to hear grown men nearly come to blows over cinnamon notes—this is your episode. Dead bottles everywhere. Reputations nowhere to be found. A decade ago, if a beer spent a few months in a single bourbon barrel, its release would cause fanfare amongst craft beer obsessives. These days, beers are blended from an increasing number of different barrels for extended periods of time, so we decided to sample beers that represent an increasing number of different barrels to see if more barrels actually means better results. To help us better understand the barrel side of the beer world, we talk to Ethan Schulenberg of Midwest Barrel Company, who provides a variety of barrels for a large number of American craft brewers. He explains the role of a “barrel broker” and how he helps brewers find the right vessel for aging, among many other topics. Also, Craig shouts out Revolution's clever event planning, we challenge our highest ABV beer record, and one of us is slowing turning into E.T. by the end. Ethan Schulenberg Interview (00:06:49 - 00:45:26) Beers Reviewed Flipside Brewing - Barrel-Aged Decision Fatigue (Imperial Stout aged in Weller 12 barrels) Mikerphone Brewing - Sweet Drams, vol. 2 (Triple Mash Imperial Stout aged 27 months in Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve 15-Year barrels) Half Acre Beer Co. - Triple Barrel Wilderness of History (Barleywine aged in Weller, Russell's Reserve, and Cognac barrels) More Brewing Company - Roaming Elephant (Barleywine aged in Eagle Rare 10 year, Parker's Heritage 14 year, Elijah Craig 18 year, and Elijiah Craig 19 year barrels)

Another one from Side Project Brewing out of Maplewood, Missouri. Featured beer: 10 Year Barleywine, a 17% barrel aged English Barleywine from Side Project Brewing. Per the description from the brewery, "More than 2 years ago we began brewing in anticipation of this day, focusing on a blended Barleywine for this release and showcasing a truly special beer, M.J.K. in a new light. This beer consists of single and double barrel-aged M.J.K. finished for 18 to 27 months in Willett Family Estate Bourbon Barrels. A thoughtful splash of Längst reigns in the intensity and finishes the character of this special blend of deep, rich, luxurious English Barleywines."What kind of alcohol did America prefer throughout history? Marci P. and Gavin explored the fascinating resurgence of bourbon, a spirit once languishing in dusty liquor store shelves during the 1980s. Marci, with her insider perspective from the wine and liquor trade, recounted how bourbon was far from fashionable, and she even assisted distributors in offloading surplus stock, a stark contrast to today's market where these same bottles, like Pappy Van Winkle, command astronomical prices. They delved into the industry's dramatic transformation, noting the shift from single malt Scotch dominance to bourbon's newfound popularity, driven by collectors and a growing appreciation in restaurants. Marci's journey, from selling discounted whiskey to international markets to creating uniquely packaged spirits for discerning clients, highlighted the unpredictable nature of the liquor business. They marveled at the emergence of vintage whiskey collectors and the discovery of pristine, decades-old bottles, speculating on the motivations of past hoarders. The discussion underscored the importance of relationships, innovative packaging, and a keen eye for market trends, all of which contributed to Marci's success in a rapidly evolving industry.

John is joined by Wright Thompson, master of long-form narrative non-fiction and author of the book Heilemann adjudges the best of 2024 — The Barn: The Secret History of a Murder in Mississippi. Wright explains how he came to write The Barn, in which he blends history, journalism, and memoir to offer a new account of the 1955 torture and murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till a few miles from Wright's boyhood home in Mississippi; what he learned in the process about race, the South, and himself; and why, now more than ever, the story still matters. Wright also discusses his previous book, Pappyland, about Pappy Van Winkle, the most magical bourbon known to man, and the family that makes it, and his career writing seminal magazine profiles of iconic athletes such as Tiger Woods. Send us a textThis week I'm enjoying a bottle of Van Winkle 12 year with my buddies Matt and Stephen. Why make a podcast about this? Well we're talking about one kind of inflation. Supply and demand. This bottle is a $100 bottle but you won't be able to find it in your local liquor store and online they go for $800-1200 a bottle. We're discussing if it's worth it, some other things that have skyrocketed in recent years and a bunch of other random stuff because we are drinking.
Pappy Van Winkle's 15 Year Family Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is one of the most sought after bottles on the market today. The now famous wheated bourbon recipe was created by Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle and he believed the wheat was responsible for creating a soft, smooth, and distinguished profile. Turns out he was right. The Van Winkle recipe and lineup is steeped in history and the brand has become legendary amongst ALL whiskey drinkers. But is the hype and acclaim deserved? What does this unicorn taste like? In this episode, we do our best to demystify Pappy and give you our honest take on this highly coveted pour. You won't believe how much we paid for this bottle and you might also be shocked by how it stacks up against other heavyweights in some impromptu blinds. The holidays are a great time to share bottles with friends and family. If you have a Van Winkle bottle on the shelf, you might want to listen to our pod before you make a decision on opening it. Erick shares his journey from accidentally buying a bar at age 22 to building a successful bourbon business over 20 years. He highlights how bourbon prices and availability have changed dramatically, with rare bottles like Pappy Van Winkle going from $25 a pour to $350 now. His bar's bourbon selection has grown from around 150 bottles to 900 at his bourbon club. Erick notes that interest in neat pours and premium bourbons started picking up around 2012-2014 as the bourbon boom took off. Gavin and Erick discuss the evolution of the bourbon industry, particularly focusing on the period around 2015. They note that the industry was initially cautious about releasing large quantities of bourbon, but as demand grew, so did production. They also discuss the current state of the industry, with many distilleries now producing a wide range of brands and products. They highlight the significant increase in bourbon production, with companies like Jim Beam and Buffalo Trace now holding large stocks of bourbon.

Pappy: Known for being a very limited part of the yearly Buffalo Trace "allocation season" for Pappy Van Winkle products, the 13 year Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye doesn't often get talked about as much as some of the other products like Pappy 15 year or the ultra-aged 23 year oak bomb. Sazerac: The One and Only New Orleans Original. Sazerac Rye Whiskey symbolizes the tradition and history of New Orleans. Rye Whiskey dates back to the 1800's, around the time when saloons, veiled as Coffee Houses, began lining the streets of New Orleans. It was at the Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street where local patrons were served toddies made with Rye Whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters. The libation became known as the “Sazerac” and America's first branded cocktail was born. This is the whiskey that started it all.

We take a little bit of a break from Hawkeye news to turn our attention to a very special cause that we love to support each and every year. It's the Chuck Long Charity Auction to help support the Children's Therapy of the Quad Cities. We are joined by our good friend Chuck Long and the President and CEO of the Children's Therapy Center of the Quad Cities, Angie Peterson, to discuss the upcoming event and how by just registering to bid will put you in a drawing for free gifts, even if you don't post a winning bid. We talk about history of the program, which is celebrating 75 years this year, and we discuss how Long got involved in the event. Then we discuss the bidding beginning on May 10th and wrapping up on May 18th and how you can get involved. How about some great Hawkeye items that will be up for bid, including a signed helmet from Cooper DeJean, a signed basketball by Caitlin Clark, Kate Martin, and Gabbie Marshall, a 10 year bottle of Pappy Van Winkle, life size cutout of Caitlin Clark, Taylor Swift signed album, and so much more.
There are so many bottles these days, folks, that do the rounds on social media and develop immediate clout that may or may not be deserved. From limited releases to private barrel picks to a bourbon that somehow seems to have been touched by a single teardrop of God and holds a legendary status unmatched by even the most sought-after of Pappy Van Winkle bottles. We're lucky enough to be trying one of those widely-talked-about bottles this week on This is my Bourbon Podcast and we're giving it the ol' TIMBP review through and through! The Ben Holladay 18 Barrel Blend lovingly crafted from the fine folks over at Bourbon Lore has graced our Glencairns and slipped past our lips, so it's time for us to let you know if it was all worth it. Eric and I also let you know what we've been drinking recently, dive into a Barrel Ring, and bring it on home as we take some time with Tips 'n' Bits. Enjoy, and thanks as always for listening. The Bourbon King Toby Curtsinger was featured on the Netflix documentary Heist for his alleged role in stealing a half million dollars in expensive Pappy Van Winkle bourbon from Buffalo Trace, the Kentucky distillery that he'd worked at since 1988. The case became known as Pappygate!Toby, and Jeff Waldridge, who worked in law enforcement in Kentucky at the time, tell Toby's story in great detail. They outline the culture of the bourbon business, recount all of the events an circumstances lead up to and after Toby's arrest and conviction, and explain how the highest level of Kentucky politics factored into Toby's case. Toby maintains his innocence about the missing Pappy Van Winkle bourbon, but has plenty of thoughts on theories as to why he was targeted the way he was. There was a huge buying frenzy during the pandemic, but where is the secondary market of bourbon headed? We saw a huge boom and that bubble is starting to deflate a bit. Nata Gana originally started as a whiskey-focused Instagram account and worked directly with brands, but has since evolved into a writer covering the entire spirits industry and has also began curating his own sample packs out in the market called Bevridge. As secondary whiskey market values skyrocketed the past decade, iconic bottles like Pappy Van Winkle became difficult to obtain, yet seem poised to stall. Nate gives his opinion on the state of collecting and what allocated bottles are worth the chase and where he sees the bottom falling out. Show Notes: Above the Char with Fred Minnick (@fredminnick) talks about present day prohibition on our economy. How did you initially monetize your Instagram account? Are the guidelines changing for how brands have to interact with influencers? When did the transition change from Instagram to bring a writer? What is your philosophy on collecting and holding to sell versus flipping? What is the current state of the secondary market and will it rebound to where it was? Will Pappy Van Winkle sustain its current value? What whiskey category do you think has room to grow in value? Talk about your Bevridge sample packs. Support this podcast on Patreon
