After beating Joe Frazier and George Foreman in two of the biggest fights in boxing history, Muhammad Ali was looking for an easy win over somebody. Enter Chuck Wepner... This would be a walk in the park for the champ before he could move on to bigger things. Chuck had other plans. After knocking Ali down in the 9th round Wepner told his trainer Al Braverman to start the car... "We're going to the bank, " he said. "We're millionaires." To which Braverman told his fighter, "You better turn around. He's getting up and he looks pissed off." For the remainder of the fight, Ali battered the challenger, opening up cuts above both of Wepner's eyes. But Wepner kept coming, and kept coming, and never stopped until 19 seconds left in the 15th round when Ali sent him to the canvas... and even then, Wepner got back up, but the fight was stopped. He had given everything he had and then some and his courageous fight caught the attention of everyone... most notably a young Sylvester Stallone who would use this Wepner fight against Ali to write a screenplay about a fighter getting the opportunity of a lifetime, and coming this close to becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. We know him as Rocky Balboa. But another filmmaker also was interested in the story of Chuck Wepner. Enter Jeff Feuerzeig, who wasn't as interested in Rocky Balboa, but rather... The Bayonne Bleeder, Wepner. So Feuerzeig set out to tell the story of Wepner in an ESPN 30-for-30 documentary called 'The Real Rocky" and then followed that up by writing the screenplay for a feature film titled, "Chuck" starring Liev Schreiber. Nobody knows the story of Chuck Wepner better than Feuerzeig and he joins us this week on the 50-year anniversary of when this unheralded fighter got into the ring with the most famous boxer of all-time, and stood toe-to-toe with the great Ali for 15 rounds. Feuerzeig tells how he first heard of Chuck as an 11-year old kid and the fight Wepner had against Sonny Liston that was the bloodiest battle one could imagine. The Sundance Award winning director for The Devil and Daniel Johnston, Feuerzeig tells the story of how over 30 years after the Ali fight, he was able to tell the story of the Real Rocky on ESPN's signature 30-for-30 series and how the ensuing court battle of the former marine Wepner, vs the Hollywood icon, Stallone was more a matter of honor and recognition than anything else. Marvel Studios surprised fans with our first official glimpse of the upcoming Thunderbolts* film, by quietly dropping the teaser trailer Monday morning. The footage, set to the tune of Where is My Mind? by The Pixies, features Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, most heavily, and is in keeping with descriptions that came out of both D23 and San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, along with a few surprises. The search for the DCU's Hal Jordan has finally come to an end, according to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, with Emmy winner Kyle Chandler set to star in the HBO Lanterns series. Chandler's name was not among the top contenders being bandied about the last few weeks, which included the likes of Timothy Olyphant and Chris Pine, as well as Josh Brolin, as we previously reported. The Lanterns series, developed by Ozark's Chris Mundy, Lost's Damon Lindelof and Eisner Award winner Tom King, has often been likened to HBO's True Detective in terms of tone and story. Seems like we've been celebrating more box office wins than losses as of late, but Transformers: One was decidedly less than meets the eye, at least with audiences, as the animated prequel debuted to a soft $25 million, a near franchise low. The muted response may come as a bit of a surprise coming of the heels of strong critic reviews and an A Cinemascore, but neither were enough to dethrone reigning box office champ BeetleJuice BeetleJuice, which just held the top spot, making $26 million in its third week. Last week, Warner Brothers released the first trailer for Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho's highly anticipated sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomie Ackie, and Toni Collette. The film arrives in theaters on January 31, 2025. AMC has canceled Orphan Black: Echoes, after one season. Set in the near future, the sequel series starring Krysten Ritter shared the same world as the BBC cult hit starring Tatiana Maslany. Netflix's One Piece has cast Joe Manganiello as "Mr. 0" and Lera Abova as "Miss All Sunday" for Season 2. Director-writer Jared Bush is replacing Jennifer Lee as chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Lee will return to a filmmaking role at the company and will focus on writing and directing Frozen 3 and executive producing Frozen 4. Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Squid Game season 2 which begins streaming on December 26th. Netflix announced The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an animated film debuting on February 11, 2025, with Doug Cockle reprising his voice role as Geralt of Rivia from the CD Projekt Red video games. An exclusive clip is now available online. Netflix has dropped the first teaser for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, an animated series adaptation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell video game created by Ubisoft. Liev Schreiber will voice Sam Fisher, the protagonist of the series. Warner Bros has confirmed that Baz Luhrmann's next feature film at the studio will be Jehanne d'Arc, an epic story about the French teenage military commander Joan of Arc. Tamara Smart is joining Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. She'll recur in season two, which is in production and slated for a 2025 premiere. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to star in Emerald Fennell‘s feature adaptation of Wuthering Heights. MRC has tapped LuckyChap Entertainment to produce the film that is based on author Emily Brontë's classic novel of the same name. Warner Brothers has released the first trailer and poster for Sinners, the Prohibition era horror film from Ryan Coolger starring Michael B. Jordan that has been under wraps for the past year. The film hits theaters on March 7th, 2025. Daveed Diggs has been cast as a series regular for the fifth and final season of Amazon's The Boys.

This version takes place in PA, but holds on to much of the bones (see what I did there?) of the true story. Crazy enough, some of the most outlandish seeming things in the movie are well documented in real life! Sticking with true stories, Lauren settles the tone down with the WWI story, Irena's Vow. It's the story of a Polish woman, barely making it herself, who takes on the incredible task of saving nearly a dozen Jews during the war. It's a wonderful story with a very authentic feel and definitely worth the watch! Steering away from reality (like really far away from reality...) Kevin talks about the new murder mystery series, The Perfect Couple, on (you guessed it) Netflix. It stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Meghann Fahy, Dakota Fanning, and a handful of other actors. It's like Big Little Lies or White Lotus Lite. It's not bad, but it's not quite anything special, either. The upside is that it's just 6 episodes, so if you want to give it a shot, it's not a huge commitment. Lauren takes us out with some Broadway talk. This week, it's about the show Job. It's a stage play, not a musical and it has a reasonable run time, so it's almost like going to a movie! The subject matter gets a little heavy, but it's a great show about mental health and obsession in the modern age of technology. In an episode we last featured on our Radiolab for Kids Feed back in 2020, and in honor of its blocking out the Sun for a bit of us for a bit last week, in this episode, we're gonna talk more about the moon. According to one theory, (psst listen to The Moon Itself if you want to know more) the moon formed when a Mars-sized chunk of rock collided with Earth, the moon coalesced out of the debris from that impact. And it was MUCH closer to Earth than it is today. This idea is taken to its fanciful limit in Italo Calvino's story "The Distance of the Moon" (from his collection Cosmicomics, translated by William Weaver). Read by Liev Schreiber, the story is narrated by a character with the impossible-to-pronounce name Qfwfq, and tells of a strange crew who jump between Earth and moon, and sometimes hover in the nether reaches of gravity between the two.This reading was part of a live event hosted by Radiolab and Selected Shorts, and it originally aired on WNYC's and PRI's SELECTED SHORTS, hosted by BD Wong and paired with a Ray Bradbury classic, “All Summer in a Day,” read by musical theater star Michael Cerveris.Our newsletter comes out every Wednesday.
