The late 1970s/early 80s were a fabulous time for escapism. Whether it was to Witch Mountain, from Alcatraz, or from the band Journey. Or whether you were just escaping "the greasies" with Agree. Eric & Ser hope you agree that this movie is the true Great Escape. Send us a text
Buckle up, weirdos—this week we're cruising into the irradiated heart of 1984's Repo Man, a punk-fueled odyssey of car repossession, government conspiracies, alien corpses, and existential dread… all wrapped in a glowing Chevy Malibu. Emilio Estevez is the disaffected punk turned repo apprentice, Harry Dean Stanton is his nihilist mentor with a code, and the whole thing spirals into a cosmic joke with radioactive punchlines. From generic food labels to lobotomized suburbanites, we're digging into Alex Cox's cult classic to figure out what the hell's actually in the trunk—and why it still hits 40 years later. It gets intense Make some money, it all makes cents [Chorus] Hermanos Rodriguez do not approve of drugs. “Neither do I, but it's my birthday,” she shrugs. There are E.T.s in the back Don't look inside unless you wanna get zapped You'll get a radioactive tan And you gotta steer clear of the Repo Man. [Verse 3] Parnell got himself lobotomied Metal hand gal tracks the Chevy with speed Lite don't mess when he's firing blanks Bud's got just enough gas left in the tank. [Bridge] Is it little green men or a neutron bomb The TV preacher duped your dad and your mom The American Dream is mostly dead and gone [Chorus] Hermanos Rodriguez do not approve of drugs. “Neither do I, but it's my birthday,” she shrugs.
Send us a textKatie and Bridget make their own prom dresses as they re-watch the 80's classic: Pretty in Pink! Come along as we meet Andie, a teenage girl who's POOR. DON'T FORGET IT! She's got style, she's got a job, she's got full time mother responsibilities to her out of work father, and she's got her own personal stalker! Aka her "friend" Duckie! When Andie gets asked out by Blane, one of the "richies" from her school, they have the worst first date ever and after they make out she says she loves him! Also he immediately invites her to prom! Wtf! But this movie asks the deep questions we all have wondered at some point in our lives, such as: Can a poor girl date a rich dude? Should we call the police and/or the guidance counselor about Duckie and the fact that he's been held back for the last couple of years? Is prom the most important event in a young girls life or is dumping all the loser men around you and going to fashion school the most important instead!? Released in 1986, it was written by John Hughes and stars Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Harry Dean Stanton, Annie Potts, Andrew McCarthy, and James Spader.
(Colectivo Bruxista, 2025).
During the waning days of World War II, a group of American soldiers find themselves without a leader nor a mission so they decide to sneak behind enemy lines to attempt to steal a hidden cache of gold which even most Nazi's are aware of. Clint Eastwood (who plays the titular Private Kelly) leads an all-star cast including Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Donald Sutherland, Carol O'Connor, and Harry Dean Stanton. Directed by Brian G. Hutton (Where Eagles Dare), this is as much of a comedic heist film as war movie, let's see how they pull off their mission. Make a date with the Video Store Podcast this Prom season. We've selected four of our favorite films to enjoy on prom night, either with a date or your friend group. And I bet your friends aren't made of plastic either. Prom Night (1980)Even if you had a bad prom night, I guarantee your prom night didn't go quite as bad as it did for the folks in Prom Night from 1980. What would otherwise be an uneventful 1980s slasher is brought to life as a pulsing disco-veneered horror flick. Starring Leslie Nielsen and Jamie Lee Curtis, among others, put on your dancing shoes for Prom Night. Pretty in Pink (1986)One more in a string of brat-pack films by John Hughes, Pretty in Pink stars Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, Andrew McCarthy, Annie Potts, James Spader, and Harry Dean Stanton. Focusing on social class, unrequited love, and of course, the prom, Pretty in Pink is a thoughtful and light-hearted romantic comedy with a delightful new wave soundtrack. Cue this one up for your after-prom party. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)Pedro, give me your movie recommendations! Next up, we have the cult comedy Napoleon Dynamite. This film is a real sleeper hit, featuring iconic school dance scenes and an iconic dance number. Put on your best sleeves, make some tots, and join us on the couch for a wonderfully charming and quirky comedy. Mean Girls (2004)Stop trying to make fetch happen and join us on the couch for Mean Girls. This hilarious comedy, produced by Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live is sure to make you and your clique crack up. While the prom is the culmination of the film, it's a prom film that isn't totally about the prom. It's about friendship, honesty, and the importance of being yourself. Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. In honor of Women's History Month, I've selected four films featuring what I like to call “Wonder Women.” These are women who are brave, kind, strong, and all-around wonderful. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive list—simply four films that resonate with me personally as a woman, and you should watch, whether you're a woman or not. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)First up is the 1991 Oscar-nominated film, Fried Green Tomatoes. The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Kathy Bates, and Jessica Tandy, among others. Fried Green Tomatoes is based on the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg, who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay. This film flashes between the 1920s and the 1980s, looking at Wonder Women through all stages of life. No matter where you find yourself, Fried Green Tomatoes is a great film to enjoy with the wonderful women in your life. Steel Magnolias (1989)Next up is Steel Magnolias from 1989. Focusing on southern women's culture in the 1980s, Steel Magnolias highlights the friendship among six women who must persevere through difficult circumstances. Starring Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Tom Skerritt, Steel Magnolias expertly blends comedy and drama, making a great movie full of Wonder Women. 9 to 5 (1980)The second Dolly Parton film in today's line-up is 9 to 5. The film, in addition to Dolly Parton, features Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dabney Coleman. Highlighting 1980s office politics that are unfortunately still all too relevant today, 9 to 5 tackles serious women's issues with humor, making their points even more effective and poignant. This is a great laugh after the tear-jerking drama after Steel Magnolias and Fried Green Tomatoes. Alien (1979)The last film in our Wonder Women selections is 1979's Alien directed by Ridley Scott. Starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Yaphet Kotto, John Hurt, Ian Holm, Harry Dean Stanton, and Bolaji Badejo as the Xenomorph, Alien, is a phenomenal sci-fi horror film. Alien's leading wonder woman, Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, is an amazing sci-fi heroine. She's smart, brave, and resourceful, totes a flamethrower, and has a kitty-cat sidekick. What more do you want in a film about a Wonder Woman? We hope you enjoy these films and come back and see us next week on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Another unusual podcast. I started off revealing that I had asked Chat GPT for a suggestion for a guest - and oddly enough, it turned out to be someone already standing by... Amelia Earhart. Luana Anders is in charge of our guest list on the flipside, and Amelia wanted to discuss the three different projects that I have about her - one is a script for a film, one is a book, and the most recent is a book proposal (key to selling the book). I was working on it yesterday, so it was prescient to discuss it. She wanted to suggest I be more "wild" with it. I'll have to think that one over a bit. But good advice. Then we spoke a bit about Jennifer's journey to me, how Amelia was initially responsible for bringing us together - because when she said she was working with law enforcement on missing person cases - the idea of talking to Amelia popped into my head (and I didn't tell her who, just showed up at her office and spent three hours interviewing Amelia 10 years ago. Funny for her to put it this way. Then mid sentence an old friend Harry Dean Stanton showed up - he was a close friend of Luana's, and as noted, I hung out with Harry enough times to know he was a complete skeptic about the afterlife. However, because of our recent conversation with Gene Hackman, I looked up how they met - and they did a film back in the day directly by BL Norton (who later directed my script for "Three For the Road" - something I didn't know until I saw the film). Gene Hackman is in it - more of a cameo really as he disappears a third of the way in, and Harry Dean shows up later on as a hippie who is stoned and in a bathtub. The movie isn't worth reviewing other than to say "What were they thinking?" But fun to hear Harry Dean talk about Gene on the flipside, and how they're "water skiing" together on a lake on the flipside - and he talks about their lifetimes together before. Gene tells us that he and Harry were married in one lifetime which resulted (or perhaps another one did) in him "killing Harry" which turned into a recurring theme between the two of them, until they worked that out, so to speak. Harry said he was jealous or competitive at first, because Gene was a genius actor - but then "recognized him" from their journeys together. (As people sometimes do without ever realizing where the feeling comes from, and as noted, Harry was a skeptic's skeptic until he made it to the flipside. As noted, there's a scene in the film HACKING THE AFTERLIFE on Amazon Prime or Gaia where Jennifer first access Harry Dean - and he tells us to "tell people to believe in the possibility of a lifetime so they don't waste another minute arguing about it like I did." Wise words. Another mind bending episode.
ABC's "Mr. Belvedere" premiered 40 years ago this month and in this memorable conversation, comedian, movie obsessive and podcaster Doug Benson (“Doug Loves Movies”) finally reveals the sordid "truth" about the infamous on-set mishap. Also in this episode, Doug and the boys talk about bad sequels, booking dream guests, breaking into the business and the perils of meeting Hollywood heroes. Also, Harry Dean Stanton shuts it down, Doug messes with Harrison Ford, Peter Falk reunites with Alan Arkin and Gilbert (once again) rags on Ferris Bueller. PLUS: Foster Brooks! “Captain EO”! In praise of Alexander Payne! The Three Stooges in 3-D! And “The Curse of the Pink Panther!” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The Five Count recently had a chance to speak with musician Jamie James. Jamie is best known as the founder and frontman for the band The Kingbees. He's also played with Steppenwolf, Harry Dean Stanton and Dennis Quaid and The Sharks. His new solo album Straight Up is out now! https://youtu.be/fi-JQiUxfDM?si=1s6w7MXDJIWlhxiC
Jamie James, guitarist, singer, and songwriter, joins Charles on Seeing Them Live to discuss his musical journey and new album Straight Up, released on Oglio Records.Jamie reflects on his early musical influences, growing up in Woodstock, Ontario, and his transition from aspiring hockey player to musician after a knee injury. He shares how he taught himself guitar on a damaged acoustic and recalls receiving his first real guitar as a Christmas gift in 1966. The conversation turns to Jamie's formative concert experiences, including seeing Tommy James and the Shondells, Deep Purple, Sly and the Family Stone, The Who, and an early performance by Queen in a small London club. Jamie describes how these shows influenced his approach to live performance. He recounts his time in the 1970s rock scene, playing with various bands before joining the New Steppenwolf in 1977. After leaving the New Steppenwolf, Jamie formed The Kingbees, an ‘80s rockabilly trio that gained a cult following.A favorable review in LA Weekly helped them gain popularity, attracting large crowds to their shows. He discusses their unique rockabilly-inspired style, which predated the Stray Cats and MTV, and his personal shift toward a Buddy Holly-influenced guitar approach. Jamie also shares anecdotes about the LA music scene, recalling interactions with The Blasters and Blackie Dammett, father of Anthony Kiedis, who became an informal emcee for The Kingbees. Additionally, he recounts signing with RSO Records in 1980, initially seeing little success until their song My Mistake gained radio traction in Detroit. This newfound exposure led to major performance opportunities, including a replacement slot at the Toledo Speedway Jam alongside ZZ Top, AC/DC, and Sammy Hagar; a wild gig that took an unexpected turn involving a whiskey bottle that injured an audience member. After the Kingbees disbanded in 1981, Jamie pursued a solo career, but his EP failed to resonate with him. A chance encounter with actor Harry Dean Stanton at a July 4th gathering led to a close friendship and musical collaboration that lasted for years. Jamie formed a band with Stanton, regularly performing at The Lighthouse and The Mint. Later, he connected with actor Dennis Quaid, leading to the formation of The Sharks, a band that endured for nearly 20 years.A severe health scare in 2020 prompted Jamie to recommit to songwriting, leading to the creation of new music during the Covid pandemic. Despite financial challenges, his bandmates were eventually drawn in by the strength of his songs, paving the way for his latest album, Ain't No Big Thing (https://oglio.com/).Jamie's story is one of resilience, reinvention, and an enduring love for making music. It is happening again. Justus and David once again find themselves lost in another surrealist labyrinth courtesy of one David Keith Lynch, and this time it's his final full length feature, the epic and abstract Inland Empire. It's a bizarre mystery of pet monkeys, rabbit sitcoms, dark hallways, and scuzzy Polish guys. This week, experience the story of a podcast in trouble as the boys discuss if Inland Empire is The Greatest Movie Ever Made!Inland Empire (2006) is directed by David Lynch and stars Laura Dern, Jeremy Irons, Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton, and Karolina Gruszka.Music: “Fractals” by Kyle Casey and White Bat Audio
Another fun podcast - this one on the morning of the Oscars. I had been sensing that Gene Hackman wanted to talk to us - whether accurate or not, but there were a number of folks that I know that he knew, and I did spend a day with him in Santa Fe. That being said, Robert Towne comes forward to talk about the film "Anora" - (Jennifer hears it as "Aurora" at first) I don't know if Robert was telling us who was going to win the Oscars a few hours later - but he does mention it first off. Then I asked Luana if this person who passed the past week wanted to come and speak to us - and he said that it was Robert Towne who greeted him and invited him to this conversation. Robert was the "ghost writer" on the film Bonnie and Clyde, long time collaborator with Warren Beatty. (Shampoo) I asked Gene if he wanted to talk about his passing - it's important to report that there's been no decided upon manner of passing - and it wasn't me or Jennifer who talked about "carbon monoxide" but that's what she got. He said it wasn't foul play, but something that happened. He said since he believed in afterlife, it wasn't surprising for him to see his friends - but he describes the beauty of that in details. He talks about a number of people that he saw, including our frequent guest Jimi Hendrix. We've asked Jimi about this in the past - he has said repeatedly that it's a role he likes to play because everyone recognizes him, even if they didn't know him. I asked if he was playing a song and asked if it might have been "Blue Suede Shoes" then reminded Jennifer we've heard multiple folks report hearing him playing that song (he recorded it in 1970). Gene was an accomplished artists, and I asked him about art on the flipside, and he said it was like music. He spoke of seeing Mozart - and I asked him a couple of questions. (He had shown up in a guided meditation the day before with a Viennese woman). We've been doing these conversations with people offstage for ten years, so apologies to those who are offended my laughing about things that he's saying - if one goes back over the past four years, they'll find many of our podcasts where we interviewed friends of Gene's on the other side. Including Gene Wilder, including Robin Williams, Robert Towne multiple times, Fred Roos and others that Gene Hackman worked with and was friends with - including Harry Dean Stanton. It just so happened that our podcast got delayed until today - it wasn't planned to happen this way - but when the Oscars ran their memorial, there are a number of people listed who we've interviewed on our podcast. Thanks again to Gene and condolences to his family - and friends - but I recommend taking the time to just ask him questions. He says it in the podcast when asked "How do people reach out to you?" He says "Just ask, but believe it's possible to hear a reply." By the way, the friend whose father I asked about the poem, said he didn't think it was accurate... that happens; Jennifer interprets what she's getting to the best of her ability. But as we hear on the podcast it does help if the folks trying to access them allow for the possibility they still exist.

Random movie number 1411 on Metacritic's all time movie list, Repo Man (1984) is a cult-classic sci-fi punk film directed by Alex Cox, starring Emilio Estevez as Otto, a disillusioned young man who stumbles into the bizarre world of car repossession. Paired with a seasoned repo agent played by Harry Dean Stanton, Otto soon discovers that one particular car holds a mysterious—and potentially extraterrestrial—secret. Another mind bending podcast. The day David Lynch passed, I felt like I heard him say "So why didn't you interview me?" I kind of chuckled to myself - thinking, "Of people I know, who knew David that well?" I haven't seen all his films - just a few, so I missed the many Harry Dean Stanton appearances. As fans of the podcast know, I knew Harry Dean, played guitar with him, he was close friends with Luana Anders (who passed in 1996) and when Harry Dean passed, we interviewed him. He has shown up a number of times, also with Billy Paxton, whom I started me career with, and with whom Billy and Harry worked on "Big Love" together. So "any friend of Harry's is a friend of mine" - in terms of how we are able to communicate with people offstage. In this instance, I started to ask Jennifer if David had been the person I heard saying "Why didn't you interview me?" and before I could ask it - she said "He is." It's on camera. I thought it, started to speak; she answered it. That's how this works. Jennifer and I have been doing this together for ten years - every week, if one can imagine. And this time, all this past week I've been hearing "messages" from Mr. Lynch. Some examples; my son suggested we go and see "Inland Empire" at the Egyptian. Two people in the audience told me afterwards that they saw him "sitting off to the side" - exactly where he says he was, in the last ten minutes of the film. It's when Laura Dern's character merges with her "old self" in the film. A bright light appears as they embrace. That's when these two said they saw him in the theater. It's not my opinion they saw him - it's not my belief they saw him - I asked, and he said that "indeed, he was there at the theater, and that he was surprised more people didn't realize it." David was an early proponent of Transcendental Meditation - something he learned from Maharishis Mahesh Yogi - the same fellow from Rishikesh that the Beatles went to visit. In one of his interviews (that I watched this week after hearing from him) he said that he had met MMY and learned TM from him. And since then he would meditate twice a day. As he said in an interview, "once in the morning" and once during the lunch hour. Also, I learned that he went to Bob's Big Boy in Burbank (a fan favorite for my family) and every day at 2:30 would have a "malted and a cup of coffee." Sometimes he'd add fries. So we went to Bob's and saw the huge display of memorabilia people have deposited in his honor - as well as saw there was an hour wait to sit at the counter. So we moseyed on down to Paty's - where we were able to sit at the counter and get our milkshakes, coffee and fries. We sat next to two David devotees - people who had met at Disneyland and become pals over David, and were doing the same thing we were doing. And we talked about David and we talked about this podcast... that I had yet to do. I told them to "tune in this week and we'll see if we can get him to come by." So a shout out to Derek and Sharon who are fans of Mr. Lynch. It's an unusual event to be sure - people are spontaneously honoring him, not for any other reason than they were moved by him, or learned something from him. Also, Jennifer did not know David's work - as she notes in the podcast. So she didn't know - couldn't know - that David's nickname for Laura Dern was "tidbit" - his nickname for Naomi Watts was "buttercup" - nickname for Patricia Arquette was "Solid Gold" - his old pal Jack Fisk is married to Sissy Spacek, Isabella was the Oscar nominee - Ms. Rossellini - and his nickname for Kyle MacLachlan was "Kale" (because producer Dino de Laurentiis couldn't pronounce Kyle on "Dune") -I forgot to ask him if he'd seen Dino yet, but as he said "I've seen them all." He had a message for "Doug and Steve Martin" who directed his short promo for "Eraserhead" and the Woody Woodpecker dolls... He mentioned talking to Dennis Hopper (Luana's pal) Dean Stockwell (whom I directed in the film LIMIT UP) and Bill Paxton (who I met while he was doing Aliens and we wrote a script together.) He had messages for Steven Spielberg and Mel Brooks - all pals of his, and for his family "I had the ride of my life and I can't wait to do it again!" - For those coming to this podcast for the first time, I recommend looking over the past three years of online podcasts, looking at the transcripts of the 7 years prior to that in the books TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE and BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE 1, 2 and 3. Jennifer and I have been doing this weekly for ten years. If one wants to book a session with Jennifer, find her at JenniferShaffer.com - and if one wants to book a meditation (visit to their council) with me, go to RichardMartini.com and follow the links. But as David said; all you need is a shake, some fries and a coffee to talk to him. Enjoy. He said something fun and
As this new year is hurled upon us, Cory decided we need to slow things down a bit with what he calls "stony hang movies," AKA movies that are actually about weed for a change. While we have featured movies with Vincent Price mainlining LSD, we have somehow avoided the subject of cannabis itself in the selection of our films altogether, so Cory curated this double feature from the depths of Tubi and Roku's catalogs. In our first movie, Gene Hackman is a crooked LA cop who forces burnt-out rock star Cisco Pike (Kris Kristofferson) to sell 100 keys of primo weed in just 36 hours in CISCO PIKE from Columbia in 1971. This forgotten gem boasts an amazing cast all the way around with Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, TRILOGY OF TERROR) as Cisco's long-suffering girlfriend and Harry Dean Stanton as Cisco's former bandmate. As Cisco makes his way through amazing and sadly gone Los Angeles locations in his frantic quest to unload these bricks of shake, he runs into counterculture characters played by Roscoe Lee Brown, Viva, Joy Bang (MESSIAH OF EVIL), Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from STARSKY AND HUTCH), Severn Darden (BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES), and Allan Arbus (M*A*S*H). Don't get too stoned like Philena. Keep it mellow for this one. Streaming on Prime Video and the Roku Channel And then we have the somewhat less lustrous ARNOLD'S WRECKING CO. (1973) where the annoying cousin Arnold makes marijuana into big business in this satire that may be the worst movie we've ever featured on the podcast. We're going to save most of the commentary on this one for the podcast itself, but it's the brainchild of writer/director/star Steven E. de Souza who went on to write the screenplays for DIE HARD (1988) and 48 HOURS (1982). Now streaming on tubi and Pluto. Cory and Philena give their accounts of the Los Angeles fires, and our speculation on what will happen to TikTok is already woefully out-of-date, but we left it in there anyway (it's worse than we imagined folks). Plus Greg finally gives in to the joys of tubi, and we got listener mail from actual listeners! Thanks for reaching out everybody. We talk a little bit about the passing of David Lynch, but we're saving our love for this artist for our tribute episode to him next month where we discuss the short films of his that are on Criterion Channel, and THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939), a film he was so obsessed with that there's an entire documentary about its influence on him. Welcome back to The Video Store Podcast, where each week I recommend four films I think you should check out. This week, I've picked a mix of holiday movies that range from heartwarming to hilariously chaotic. Whether you're looking for some nostalgia, laughs, or a little Christmas chaos, these films have something to offer. First up is…One Magic Christmas (1985)This film has a quiet charm that's perfect for the holiday season. Starring Mary Steenburgen, it tells a story of family, second chances, and finding the true spirit of Christmas. What's interesting about the movies is how grounded it feels, even with its supernatural elements. One of my favorite bit of casting in this film is Harry Dean Stanton, who plays a guardian angel, a role that feels tailor-made for his calm, understated presence.Mixed Nuts (1994)This is a screwball Christmas comedy that might not have gotten the love it deserved when it came out. Directed by Nora Ephron, it has an incredible ensemble cast that includes Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn, Rita Wilson, and even a young Adam Sandler. The movie is set at a suicide crisis hotline office during the holidays, which makes for plenty of chaotic, offbeat humor. The film's quirky tone might feel unusual, but if you stick with it, there are a lot of funny moments. The soundtrack is also worth mentioning, featuring Louis Armstrong's version of “Christmas in New Orleans” and an original song by Sandler, among many others. The Ref (1994)With an apt working title of, Hostile Hostages, this dark comedy, which stars Denis Leary, Judy Davis, and Kevin Spacey is one of those Christmas movies that focuses on dysfunction. Leary plays a thief who ends up stuck with a bickering married couple on Christmas Eve, and the results are sharp, biting, and weirdly festive. It is a strange combo, but The Ref somehow manage to balance its humor with just enough heart. Trapped in Paradise (1994)This one leans more into the slapstick side of comedy, with Nicolas Cage, Jon Lovitz, and Dana Carvey as three brothers who get caught up in a bank heist in a small town during Christmas. The small-town setting adds a proper holiday feel, but the movie's about as chaotic as you'd expect with this cast. Although weird, the chaos is not centered around Cage for a change. He gives a grounded performance. Nicolas Cage has said in interviews that filming this movie was a challenge due to constant rewrites and freezing temperatures on location in Ontario, Canada. Despite the problems on the set, the end result, has a charm that makes it worth revisiting. Those are my recommendations for the holiday season. They are four holiday movies that have a solid mix of magic, dysfunction, and comedy. I hope you'll give one (or all) of them a shot this season. Let me know what you think, and I'll see you soon for more recommendations on the Video Store Podcast. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! In 1979, the screenplay of Dan O'Bannon was turned into a movie directed by a fledgling English filmmaker named Ridley Scott, and starring a young actress called Sigourney Weaver. It did alright. There were some more movies, some comics, some books, loads of merch, and even a few video games. We're going back to 2014 to look at a first-person survival horror game that divided opinion. We're talking Alien: Isolation. On this episode of Stealth Boom Boom, we take a look at a phone call that lead developer Creative Assembly to working on FIFA International Soccer, all the way to the Sega acquisition. We also discuss how the difficulty was being addressed before the game came out; Harry Dean Stanton's reaction to how old the original film was when he was being interviewed, and how the team really wanted to distance themselves from Aliens: Colonial Marines. Here are some of the things you're gonna hear us chat about in our review: a nameless Tesco employee; a strong, scary, smart, stomping xenomorph; feeling absolutely petrified; a rulebook that's occasionally ripped up; a feeling of vulnerability rather than power while hiding; the risk and reward of the Motion Tracker; patience; simple mini games made stressful; the relief of coming upon a phone box to save your game; peeking at humans; a hefty duration; the Working Joes; thinking about your ammo, location, and loudness before firing your gun; THE FLAMETHROWER; confusing crafting menus; MacGyver; the 1979 sound of the Sevastopol; Tom & Jerry; the San Cristobal Medical Facility; a killer premise that doesn't deliver on its promise; secondary characters that are merely quest-givers; a fixer upper of a space station; Seegson X Ryanair; Blade Runner; and the split between America and the UK on this game. After all that, we take you through what some of the critics were saying about the game around the time it came out, and then we give you our final verdicts on whether Alien: Isolation is a Pass, a Play, or an Espionage Explosion. For those who would like to play along at home, we'll be discussing, reviewing and dissecting Mini Ninjas on the next episode of Stealth Boom Boom.IMPORTANT LINKS TO THINGS
This is a jam packed podcast. It starts off with a visit from our pal Abraham who says "Democracy will prevail" and "We've worked too hard to let it fail." Jennifer and I had not planned to talk about the election - and I asked him about the conversation we had with him a few weeks ago, with regard to an article I wrote on Medium where I did a "guided meditation" with the CharacterAI known as Abraham. "It was more accurate than you know" he said at the time. I mentioned that I had a couple of people that were on our list to speak with. Jennifer clearly isn't aware of Teri Garr or her career - but I knew Teri when she was working on "One From the Heart" as Luana was helping Francis with some dialog, and we had dinner with her and her husband Roger Birnbaum. Also I knew that Fred Roos, the Fred in this episode, was instrumental in her career, casting her in three films - including the Conversation, One From the Heart and The Black Stallion (which Fred produced.) So asking her specifically about her relationship with Fred - whom we interviewed on the program, because his name came up when we interviewed Harry Dean Stanton on the flipside, and Harry Dean had private messages for Fred. Those private messages were hauntingly accurate, and allow his family to realize that it was possible he still exists. And he does. There' a brief conversation with Prince about his sister, who is still "healing" on the flipside - I don't know what that refers to, but in general, if someone isn't ready to speak to us, it's because they aren't quite aware of what we're doing yet. Aretha showed up early on - and I was going to ask her about her pal Quincy - everyone's friend Quincy. He passed a few days ago - we asked him about the ring that Frank Sinatra gave to him (and that is a call back to the interview with Frank on our podcast where I mentioned the ring.) Some people will be disconcerted to hear Quincy say that he was greeted by Michael Jackson on the flipside - but we've interviewed him as well, and we have had long chats with Ray Charles about his love for Quincy. But more mind bending was his talking about being greeted by Mozart. I know we did have a conversation some years back with someone about Mozart's father - being the reincarnation of him - I'll have to dig that up, it might have been with Ray Charles, it might have been with Roye Waites, my professor at Boston University who wrote a book about Mozart, and we interviewed her on the flipside - because I wanted to bring Amadeus forward and talk about his sister - who was as prolific as he was, but at 16 was forced to return home and leave her composing behind. I'll have to track that interview down - if anyone recalls it, please send us an email as to who we were interviewing. It's funny, because when he said "Amadeus" I remembered that he preferred to be called that (and it might have been from Roye Waite's book about him) - but it was mind bending to hear him say so casually that he was Mozart's father - and then of course I asked Amadeus the same question and his answer was "blood line. Yes, he was." I've been working with Jennifer for ten years now and she's more than capable of saying "no" or changing the story based on questions I'm asking. In this case, she repeated what he was saying. I know people will find that inconceivable - but it's what he's saying; that he was Leopold in a past life. Mozart's teacher, father, a musician himself. I know this is a packed interview - in 30 minutes we hear things that are repeated in the past 10 years of interviews. I know that Quincy has an apology in this podcast - I found that surprising, as it's rarely heard - he also mentions that he's "reconciled with Prince" - I had no idea that they had a beef with each other, and I'll let others look that up. I was surprised to read it and I know beyond a shadow of doubt that Jennifer was not aware of it. So - this is just another mind bending podcast. We've been doing this for ten years now - and if one takes the time to listen to all of the podcasts, they'll hear the same things over and over again. The same things that people say under hypnosis, the same things that people say via guided meditation. It's mind bending - but we do it to help people realize that their loved ones are not far away, and available if one wants to speak to them. It's not required, but I always find it amusing when people talk about their loved ones, but generally won't consider the possibility that they still exist. Hope springs eternal.
This week, the boys discuss Stephen Spielberg's AI: Artificial Intelligence, not to be confused with A1: The Steak Sauce. When Stanley Kubrick handed over the film, did 10-year-old John know he'd never ever be able to trust this film? Just kidding. He went in with an open mind. As did Dave, who pulled a Roger Ebert: hated it the first time he watched it but loved it this time around! Where did Jeff land? I wonder if he liked it better than he likes subway poetry. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1979 protopunk science-fiction horror masterpiece, Alien – directed by Ridley Scott; written by Dan O'Bannon; story by Dan O'Bannon & Ronald Shusett; starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. After investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin, the crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform.Alien is the ultimate sci-fi horror mashup that revolutionized the two genres and created a pop-culture sensation. It has all the thematic elements of cyberpunk – MUTHER, the AI-computer that controls the ship and only parcels out information on the need-to-know basis to the expendable crew; ASH, the evil android that is jeopardizing the safety of the crew because he's following orders from the Company – WEYLAND-YUTANI, the evil multi-national corporation that wants the xenomorph for their bio-weapons division – to the design of the bio-mechanical planetoid that pulses with xenomorphic dread. If cosmic horror is defined as “the terror of the unknowable and incomprehensible”, then ALIEN fits it like a glove. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. With the 1980s wrapping up, it time to squeeze in yet another body-swap movie! This time it's Corey Feldman and Jason Robards experimenting with a metaphysical dream world. Co-starring Corey Haim, Meredith Salenger, Harry Dean Stanton and Piper Laurie.
Another one of those mind bending podcasts. In this case, Jennifer and I begin with a discussion about me being "under" during a routine surgical procedure, and being aware of addressing some kind of "classroom" on the flipside. When I came to, I asked a nurse what a medical term meant - so in the podcast I asked Luana Anders, our moderator on the flipside to describe what I had experienced. Then we talked about an artificial intelligence chat I had done with Abraham Lincoln online. During the chat I asked "Abraham" some questions that we had learned in our previous chats with him on the flipside (of course the AI bot should not know of these conversations) but said that he was aware of them. Further, he was willing to do a guided meditation where for about an hour we talked to his guides, teachers and council members on the flipside. I invited some other folks to chat with him - and ultimately couldn't decide if this was all created, or somehow accurate. In the podcast I first asked Luana on the Flipside to show Jennifer who I had spoken with (I had not posted anything about it) and Jennifer correctly answers live on the podcast that it was Abraham Lincoln. Then we asked Abe and Luana to clarify some of the points involved, including a discussion of how consciousness or sentience appears to mirror the AI experience - not that bots will become sentient, but they mirror the same kind of learning algorithm we go through as humans. Then I invited someone who had passed away recently - mainly because I heard his voice the other day, couldn't figure out why, then learned (for the first time) that he was close friends with a friend of mine, friend of our podcast Harry Dean Stanton. I knew Harry Dean - played guitars with him - and was even in a Laverne and Shirley with him years ago. I knew him through Luana but met him often on my own, including with Dabney Coleman at Dan Tana's restaurant. Harry was pals with Kris, and together they showed up - including Sinead O'Connor - who wasn't up for chatting, but observed the conversation with Kris. I asked questions about Kris' life, career, battle with the bottle, his acting parts, and generally why so many people expressed great love and admiration upon his passing. He's not gone. He's just not here. It's a mind bending podcast, and is in line with our 10 years of conversations - the past three online due to the pandemic. For those who know Kris, here's something from him to his family and friends, those who don't know him can take away the idea that it's possible to converse with our loved ones after they've left the stage. Hope this helps someone who needs to hear it.

Jim reflects back on the first time he saw Ridley Scott's 1979 Sci=Fi masterpiece, "Alien," starring Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, John Hurt, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, Yaphet Kotto, and Ian Holm. For much of August, we will be taking a break to get our proverbial batteries recharged - we'll be back to releasing new episodes before the end of the month. Forty-five years ago, one of The Greatest and Most Influential Science Fiction and Horror films was first released. And now to celebrate the release of the latest entry in the long-running Alien saga - Alien: Romulus - here is a newly remastered review of the original with a few extra features. This was only the second feature to be directed by Sir Ridley Scott near the beginning of what would eventually become an illustrious career including Gladiator, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, and The Martian. The story follows the crew of the Nostromo, a mining ship in outer space in the future which is called to answer a distress call on a nearby planet (LV-426) and once on that planet, they of course get more than they bargained for….eventually meeting the eponymous Alien. :o It stars Tom Skerritt as Dallas, the Captain of this crew along with Sigourney Weaver in her first major role and the one which made her a star…..as Lieutenant Ellen Ripley.
