Sixteen-year-old Len watched a huge orange, flame-covered craft drift low across the sky, followed by a small white orb weaving behind it. He wasn't the only witness. Police officers, university staff, and other locals said they saw the same thing that night. A newspaper report even mentioned the trailing white light, confirming what Len and his friend saw. Since we released The Long Walk podcast yesterday, we thought we'd give you guys a treat of some Poltergeist talk in this Halloween day, as Garrett's two podcast co-hosts still haven't done that film series with him, he had to get his love for Poltergeist out in some other way. Enter Poltergeist expert David Furtney! Earlier this year Garrett interviewed his friend David Furtney about his love and knowledge of the movie Poltergeist. Not just the first one, but the sequels and remake as well. The interview itself was, in our opinion, very good and insightful. The problem was there just didn't seem like an appropriate time to release said interview to you guys. We feel, October 31st is just as good a time as any. So here we go. If you love Poltergeist, then this is the podcast for you. Garrett and David go into EVERYTHING about the productions of them all. From rumors of a Poltergeist curse, to details concerning a lawsuit filed against producer/writer Steven Spielberg regarding who actually wrote it, to Spielberg himself getting turned down by Stephen King when he approached the author to write it (and what the reason why that didn't happen could be), to THAT rumor regarding who actually directed the 1982 original, to the troubled productions of parts 2 and 3, to the Sam Raimi produced 2014 remake, and ALL in between, David really takes us into the weeds as to how this series got made. "From the top of the world — fabulous 1340 KAB, Antonio Bay!"Hey, it's Halloween, and we're taking a whack at another '80s horror favorite: John Carpenter's “minor classic,” The Fog.Specifically, that moment after the radio station fire, the inspiration for this week's episode. I really wanted to perpetually capture that long piano note, with the wind and fog horns. Oh those gloomy piano keys and castrated foghorns (or maybe the deep fog horns are only an east coast thing).I still love this movie for its sound design. The audible tension created by the film's sound-team feels just as threatening today as it was back then. The contrast between the oddly cheerful KAB radio IDs and the ominous water spillage from a doomed piece of wood is personal fave. That, mid-jingle, a garbled threat cuts through, muttering about “...albatrosses around necks" still takes my breath.Maybe The Fog is one of the sillier '80s horror films in terms of premise — but as a kid, the idea of murderous lepers traveling in a glowing mist like corpse-pirate ninjas seemed totally plausible. I was shook.Basically, the movie could be summed up as “YOU ONLY MOVED THE HEADSTONES!” — but on water. Never mind that The Fog came out two years earlier than Poltergeist. Actually, no — let's mind it. Maybe Spielberg watched The Fog and thought, “We'll do The Fog on land — I already did a water horror movie.” Or stories of history-born revenge haunting the modern world are a classic trope (think The Turn of the Screw, Candyman, A Christmas Carol, etc.) Either way, both Poltergeist and The Fog deliver the murderous ghostly dead in strange costumes.And that raises a question: if ghosts exist, are they doomed to wear the outfit they died in? Or can they rotate through their wardrobe from life? (Because honestly, I'd love to haunt people in my Nike Air Pegasus from '91.
