We love you Paul and we owe this all to you and Large Marge, RIP!  For this week's flick, we're hitting up the Freelings to see how they're doing in Poltergeist II: The Otherside. Woof you guys. This movie is not good, but we have to give it credit for scaring the living daylights out of every kid who watched this when they were little and experienced the Reverend Kane. Though we feel it cheapens the first movie, and gives way too much information that no one needed--it still has that PG-13 horror movie charm that we sometimes love. Hands up if you always looked for the tequila worm at the liquor store!

After attending his first horror convention, Lou Avilleira knew he wanted to dress up for the next one. He created a character he called Father Evil for his second “con” and was amazed by the positive feedback he got. So much so that he started attending cons regularly dressed as Father Evil and developed his own cult following among horror fans. Then things got serious. When he turned 40 he gave up his lifelong quest to fit in and decided to stop caring what other people thought. That allowed him to embrace - and become - this character, who is getting close to providing enough income that Lou can give up his day job and become “the Father” full time. Guest Bio Father Evil comes from the creative mind of Lou Avilleira. He first came up with the idea of the Holy Father in 2009 for a Halloween party. He received such positive feedback from his character that he decided to take it a little further. Starting out at Chiller Theatre as one of many costumed horror fans, he soon rose above as one of the best. Father Evil is now well known amongst the horror community with an extensive fan following.  Lou Avilleira was born and raised in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. Born of Cuban immigrants, he was the first generation born in America. Having an early love of horror due to the influence of his mother, he's always had a love for the dark side. He is happily married to his wife of 15 years, Sarah, and has a son, Xavier. Lou currently resides in Woodbridge Township, New Jersey. The Birth of Father EvilLou's character, Father Evil, was born in the ‘90s as a drawing that hung in a trendy coffee spot in Rutgers, NJ, called Indigo Jones. Lou saw that the shop hung creations from local artists and decided to submit one of his own. He created a cross between a ghastly, priestly looking figure, the Joker and Reverend Henry Kane from Poltergeist II. The figure had his hands in a prayer position and behind him it said, "In nomine patris, et filii, et spiritus sancti," "in the name of the father, the son and holy spirit." Lou has always been creative. In second grade, he memorized the pattern to draw Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and trained his hand to draw it. Growing up, he loved comic books, especially the X-Men. Then, around 2006, a friend of his wife's was going to a horror convention, a “con” in the parlance. His wife knew Lou loved horror so the three of them went. Lou fell in love and vowed to dress up the next time he attended.  Two years later, Lou made good on the promise. He was brainstorming on what to dress up as. He wondered what would scare people if they saw it in a dark alley. He discarded a clown, a vampire, a zombie - they've all been done before.  He landed on a possessed priest, because if it can get to a priest, what chance do you have? He thought it would be a one-time thing. He got a $20 priest costume at Party City. He already sported a chop-style beard (though less glorious than it is today!) and he could arch his eyebrows and make an evil face. He got a pair of white-out contacts, hung a huge cross on his chest, and he was ready!  I Think We've Got Something HereThe reception from other attendees was fantastic. People were asking to take pictures with him and he was loving it.  As he made his way into one of the rooms, an Italian horror movie director caught sight of him. The director had a line of about 20 people for autographs but stepped away to talk to Lou. He told Lou the costume was so original, simple, but to the point. “Oh my God. I never saw. This is so simple. It's it's bad, but good.” He wondered if it could be that easy.  In 2010, he started going to the cons more regularly, always dressed as Father Evil. In 2012, the year he turned 40, he started to take it seriously. He got serious about his outfit and upgraded from the $20 Halloween costume.  Lou says he felt like a Phoenix coming out of the ashes. He says he found himself. Giving himself permission to...

You'll hear repeated questions as to why the character of Taylor is in this movie, how it came to pass that everyone considers this a cursed movie when the producers actually hired an actor with stomach cancer, and what happens when we go to the other side. The answer is disappointment.

Happy Halloweenies, to all our little bunniculas. This week we are having a hauntingly good time with Emmy and Oscar-nominee JoBeth Williams. You Might Know Her From The Big Chill, Kramer vs. Kramer, American Dreamer, Wyatt Earp, Frasier, Stir Crazy, Jungle 2 Jungle, Dexter, Poltergeist, and Poltergeist II: The Other Side. We talked to JoBeth about the Poltergeist films with shocking reveals about the props, Zelda Rubinstein, and the grueling stunts that left her bloody. We also dug into her theatre beginnings with Raúl Juliá at Williamstown, her nude scene in her film debut, Kramer vs. Kramer, stealing from Little Edie in Me, Myself, and I, headlining the ‘80s rom-com American Dreamer on location in Paris, and the incestuous dating history of The Big Chill cast. For the first time in a year and a half we actually met in person to record this one! Flash fiction writer Kayleigh Shoen joined us to talk about an episode of Punky Brewster that scared her as a child: The Perils of Punky!Cherie, Margaux, and Allan stuck in giant spiderweb in a cave in The Perils of PunkyHere’s Kayleigh’s hazy recollection:“I was very into Punky Brewster at an age when I was too young to read clocks, so even though I loved it, I had a hard time being a regular viewer. I think I remember it being part of a Saturday morning block with PeeWee’s Playhouse and Hey Vern, It’s Ernest, but I’m not 100% certain. Punky Brewster has some more famous episodes like the fridge episode and the Challenger explosion episode and the must-increase-our-busts episode, but I’ve chosen the episodes that were most memorable to me – THE SPIDER EPISODES!  So, I actually didn’t even realize this was 2 episodes because I think I only saw the first one and then – like I said I had no idea what time it was on or even the days of the week -- I probably didn’t see the show again for another month. I was so little that I couldn’t even really follow stories on tv. I think the first episode ends with Punky seeing a spider the size of a human adult and I was just like wow that was a really scary episode! I think I remember even thinking maybe Punky died at the end. I remember it’s set in a cave and she gets separated from her friends. Maybe they’re camping? The spider is very large and very furry. The first thing I’m looking forward to seeing again is Punky’s style. Punky was a style icon to me as a kindergarten/first grader. I was very much a dresses with pigtails girl, and thanks to Punky I added a lot of insouciant touches like bathrobe belts and mismatched socks to put my own stamp on everything.I’m also looking forward to seeing the opening credits so I can work out what Punky’s actual backstory is. What I remember can’t possibly be true – that her mom deserted her in a laundromat and then Punky went to juvie before she somehow dropped in on an old guy and convinced him to adopt her?  Maybe I should’ve suggested the first episode, actually.”So much to unpack here. First, Kayleigh was basically right about the actual premise of the show. It was very much grounded in real life issue special episodes, so this weird supernatural one where the kids go into a cave and get attacked by a giant spider is really out of the ordinary. Second, there’s a whole lot of Native American cultural appropriation that happens in this particular 2 part episode. It was the mid 80s, the same era as Poltergeist II, so this shouldn’t be terribly surprising, but it still definitely didn’t age well. We also talked about Mike the Headless Chicken… which was a real chicken who survived a botched beheading attempt and lived for 18 months longer. Wikipedia has details, but be warned that they aren’t for the squeamish. Geoffrey gives us a lesson on the history of the band Oingo Boingo, and Julia and Kayleigh share choice nuggets of trivia from oral histories of the Punky Brewster refrigerator episode and of The Perils of Punky. If you’re having fun listening to us, please tell your friends about us! She then fired additional rounds while standing in the hallway.” The Outlook reported last month about Jones affiliation with Bigfoot Research as the southeast regional coordinator. In a video of Jones recorded by The Outlook, Jones said she was helping conduct a search for Sasquatch in a portion of the Talladega National Forest. She stated she was in the military and law enforcement for 15 years. Jones also told The Outlook she had discovered adult male and female Sasquatch in the area along with juveniles and that she left food weekly for the creatures. Jones was searching for others across the Southeast who have credible sightings of Sasquatch. Jones has been charged with attempted murder, a Class A felony; attempted first-degree domestic violence, a Class B felony and first-degree criminal trespassing, a Class A misdemeanor. According to the Shelby County Jail website Jones has a $81,000 bond available to her. The tragic real-life story of the Poltergeist cast Link: https://www.looper.com/224331/the-tragic-real-life-story-of-the-poltergeist-cast/?utm_campaign=clip Dominique Dunne - Dana Freeling Perhaps one of the most grisly and tragic deaths was that of 22-year-old actress Dominique Dunne, who played the eldest sister in the first film, Dana Freeling. Her character was mentioned in Poltergeist II as being off to college, but the reality was, any ideas screenwriters might have had for her character in the sequel had to be scrapped entirely due to Dunne's untimely death just months after the original movie was released. On the evening of October 30, 1982, Dunne was brutally strangled by an aggravated ex-boyfriend. The assailant, identified as sous chef John Sweeney, showed up at her West Hollywood home in hopes of repairing their relationship and moving back in with her. An argument erupted on Dunne's driveway, where the deadly attack took place. When police arrived at the scene, Sweeney was quoted as saying "I've killed my girlfriend!" At the time, Dunne was still alive; she was rushed to Cedar's-Sinai Medical Center, where she remained in a coma for five days and never regained consciousness. On November 4, 1982, just three weeks before what would have been her 23rd birthday, she was removed from life support and pronounced dead. Julian Beck - Kane, the malevolent preacher in the 1986 movie Poltergeist II Unlike Dominique Dunne's shocking murder, Beck passed away after a long battle with stomach cancer, something he had been diagnosed with in 1983. So while his death is certainly unfortunate, it also definitely wasn't out of left field. Beck was dying of stomach cancer during the production and the entire crew was well aware of his diagnosis. Some believe it even influenced his chilling final performance in a film. Heather O'Rourke - Carol Ann The most well-known death that sparked and fuels the "Poltergeist curse" fire to this day was the shocking loss of Heather O' Rourke, who played Carol Ann — the young, angelic face of the entire franchise. During production of Poltergeist III in 1987, O'Rourke was undergoing treatment for Crohn's disease, which would turn out to be a misdiagnosis. Fast forward to January of 1988, when O'Rourke became severely ill and her health started deteriorating at an alarming rate. On February 1, 1988, she was rushed to the hospital, where she ultimately died due to septic shock caused by undetected intestinal blockage. This blockage ruptured and the toxins released in her body proved to be too much. During an operation the 12-year-old O'Rourke was undergoing the same day of her death, it was also revealed that she did not have Crohn's disease, but an acute bowel obstruction due to a congenital stenosis — something that could've been surgically corrected had it been detected sooner. Released in June 1988, the film marked O'Rourke's final feature, as she died four months before its release at the age of 12. Her death resulted in marketing complications for the film's studio, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, who did not want to exploit the tragedy. If there is a Poltergeist curse, what caused it? One widely-discussed theory is the fact that real skeletons were used by the effects crew in the first two movies, most notably in the muddy swimming pool scene from the original with Diane Freeling, played by JoBeth Williams. Desecration of human remains plays a big role in the first film as the probable cause of the Freelings' pesky poltergeist problem. We're joining forces with Tyler Jensen and Roman Chimienti, the directors of the superb queer documentary Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, in Phoenix Arizona (and later Orange Country, California) to discuss the "Other Side" in the 1986 sequel Poltergeist II: The Other Side! After spilling the tea on last year's live episode on A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, we dive into Brian Gibson's sequel that at least tries to do something different (as opposed to repeating the most successful parts of the original film). Is it wholly successful? That matter is up for debate, as the film holds a special place in Roman's heart, while it was a first-time viewing for us.Join us as we discuss Reverend Henry Kane (a bisexual Julian Beck), the villain that terrified a generation of children. Also up for discussion are the diminished roles of Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) and Tangina (Zelda Rubinstein), the laughable effects of the 3-minute-long climax in the titular Other Side and what it means to live a "normal" life. It's not all bad, though! We admire the chemistry and charisma of the film's co-leads Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams, the superb practical effects (that vomit monster!) and the historical importance of the film's release during the Night Stalker's reign of terror.Questions? Comments? Boston area comedian Diana Lu joins us this time to talk about a movie that scared her when she was a kid: Poltergeist II: The Other Side. Here's Diana's summary of the movie:"In Poltergeist II, the little girl gets sucked into the TV AGAIN, and her parents race against the clock to get her back. This time, they have to kill the ghost who keeps stealing their kid, but they have no idea who it is. They discover eventually that it's this olden times cult leader who led some mass suicide in a cave somewhere and they go find and crush his bones to save their little girl."This gets one plot thread pretty closely, but completely leaves out another major one! Listen to find out what this movie is actually about. Also, fair warning: this episode is more sad and serious than usual. We talk about the supposed Poltergeist Curse, which is really just a bunch of sad deaths of cast members. One by domestic violence, and three by illness. We also talk in more serious than funny ways about cinematic representation of minorities since this movie has both a little person and a Native American in the cast. Zelda Rubinstein reprised her role as Tangina the psychic in this movie, but her character was mostly extraneous for some reason, despite being crucial to the first movie. Regardless, Zelda Rubinstein herself was an awesome activist who championed rights for little people, and was on the front wave of AIDS awareness. Zelda Rubinstein did this because someone she loved died of AIDS and she felt very strongly that gay men needed to be warned that it was a danger and that they needed to practice safe sex. She did it even though at the time AIDS was a taboo subject and advocating for gay mens' health did have a negative impact on her career. She was present for the very first L.A. AIDS walk, and was an activist for this cause even before Elizabeth Taylor and Madonna. What a hero! Will Sampson was a Native American Muscogee (Creek) actor who played the part of Taylor in this movie. He was also an activist who spent his influence on advocating for better Native American representation in movies. The Sampson Brothers are Will Sampson's sons, musicians and dancers who perform with a Lakota hip hop artist. They're also activists and promote a message of healing cultural trauma for Native peoples. Also, they do really cool dances with hoops. We also talked about Marlon Brando declining his Oscar for The Godfather in 1973 and sending Sacheen Littlefeather (an Apache woman) to represent him at the ceremony. She gave a short and very composed speech (even despite being interrupted by booing!), in which she explained that Brando was refusing his award because of how Native Americans are treated in the film industry, and because of the events at Wounded Knee. Brando sent a much longer speech, which Littlefeather didn't read because the officials at the ceremony said she could only have 60 seconds. John Wayne had to be physically restrained from pulling her off stage, and this speech tanked her acting career entirely. We also talk about the special effects and how Julia was scarred by the tequila scene as a kid. So there's a little fun in this episode …

For Poltergeist II we had the pleasure of the presence of a Polter-guest: none other than Peter Warden, from the podcast Retro Reviews! We crossed over into “the other side” and had a consensus of “rent it” for this endearing-enough sequel to one of our favorite horror movies. Join us as we talk mess monsters, evil mezcal worms, the merits of Steven and Taylor’s rivalry, and finally settle the score for when Peter made us watch one of our least favorite films we’ve covered. This week, we return to the deep and largely untapped well of short films for an easy-breezy summertime celebration of friendship, podcasting, and weird videos! It's the perfect antidote to your July 4th hangover (combined with fluids, rest, and federally-regulated painkillers).Up first! It's the surprisingly violent first installment of the 1944 serialized drama version of Captain America, in which the Captain is for some reason a District Attorney in search of a vibrator. It's old-timey and weird and full of surprises that we chat all about. Next up! We check in with our old friend Saul Bass (director of Phase IV) and see what all the late sixties Oscar buzz was about in regards to his award-winning 1968 short documentary Why Man Creates. It's a somewhat ramshackle, fairly charming, and wholly unique little collection of brief segments loosely structured around creativity. Plus it's got that signature George Lucas visual style! Finally! It's a third short: Styx: Killroy Was Here, (aka Styx: Caught in the Act) the 1983 concept-concert-film that nearly killed the treasured rock & roll outfit Styx. Famed musical lunatic Dennis Deyoung masterminded this semi-racist Blade Runner-esque futuretale of the death of rock music, featuring the talents of the director of Poltergeist II and the director of the Making of Thriller, and some kind of allegory about domestic automobile manufacturing. How ridiculous is it? Very. All this plus a sweaty-journalism fuck-style theorem, an on-scene report from the filming locations of Jack Frost, a surprising return for Face to Face chat, Kevin Moss is Mister Roboto (he's skype-y this week), a look at major league pitching deficiencies in London, more or less Morlocks, partially drunken musings on the current state of affairs in the Blaxploitation world, Parker references Marvel movies, a Pupstar update, throwing shade at Babar the Elephant, shout out to Bosco sticks, our weekly news plus Blu-ray Picks and even more! In the second half of our back-to-back series, we're discussing the 1986 sequel to last week's episode, "Poltergeist II: The Other Side." We've hit 1986 particularly hard, so check out some of our other episodes from the year: Episode 35- "Neon Maniacs," Episode 56- "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2," Episode 95- "April Fools Day," Episode 103- "The Fly," Episode 147- "Critters," Episode 174- "Chopping Mall," Episode 180- "The Stuff," Episode 199- "Terrorvision" (our live show!) and Episode 200- "Trick or Treat." New on video store shelves and up for extensive discussion in this episode is... Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994) and Jackie Brown (1997) on Blu-ray - Both films making their debut on blu-ray, with Pulp Fiction getting a little extra love in the form of newly produced special features: New Interviews with the Cast and a Critic's Retrospective on the Movie's Place in Film History with Elvis Mitchel and Scott Foundas. The Honeymooners: Lost Episodes 1951-1957 - The Complete Restored Series on DVD - A 15-disc set running more than 3,000 minutes. It's everything a Honeymooner's fan could want. Really. There's 30 sketches in the set that have never been on DVD, 18 of which haven't been seen since they originally aired in the 1950s. It's $139.00, but all sorts of goodness. Poltergeist II (1986) on Blu-ray - John recalls the horrors of that "attack of the braces" scene. "A dental nightmare." Hero's Island (1961) on DVD - From the MGM Limited Edition Collection, starring James Mason and a young Harry Dean Stanton. Irvin Kirshner's Robocop 2 (1990) on Blu-ray - Featuring all those pre-CGI go-motion effects by the wizardly Phil Tippet. Manhunter (1986) on Blu-ray - Starring a young Stephen Lang (Avatar and Terra Nova) and featuring another psycho bad guy performance by Tom Noonan (Robocop 2) Vidal Sassoon: The Movie (2011) on DVD and Blu-ray - Who would have thought we'd enjoy this film? You've got to love the way Mr. Sassoon did Mia Farrow's hair for Rosemary's Baby, and this doc shows you how that transpired. Ken Burn's and Lynn Novick's Prohibition on DVD and Blu-ray - I'm 4-hours into this 6-hour doc (a 3-disc blu-ray set). Where did the time go? Brian De Palma's Dressed to Kill (1980) on Blu-ray - a film that must be seen again to be appreciated. This new Blu-ray offers some nice special features, including The Making of Dressed to Kill and An Appreciation by Keith Gordon Featurette, which is rather insightful. Click on the playback links and enjoy that show!
