Higher Learning Reaction, Recap, Breakdown, Commentary, Analysis, & Spoiler Review! Greg Alba & Coy Jandreau take on Higher Learning, the 1995 drama directed by John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious) that tackles themes of race, identity, privilege, and systemic injustice in the American college experience. The film follows three freshmen—Malik (Omar Epps), Kristen (Kristy Swanson), and Remy (Michael Rapaport)—as they navigate the pressures of higher education, racial tensions, and personal transformation at the fictional Columbus University. Some of the most intense and pivotal moments include Malik's struggle with his track scholarship and racial identity, Remy's descent into white supremacy under the influence of Cole Hauser's character, and the tragic climactic shooting scene that shakes the entire campus. Other powerful moments include Ice Cube's character Fudge dropping hard truths about systemic racism, Laurence Fishburne's powerful lectures as Professor Phipps, and the heartbreaking fates of several key characters that still resonate today. Omar Epps as Malik Williams (Love & Basketball, House), Kristy Swanson as Kristen Connor (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Phantom), Michael Rapaport as Remy (True Romance, Atypical), Ice Cube as Fudge (Friday, Barbershop), Jennifer Connelly as Taryn (A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream), Tyra Banks as Deja (Coyote Ugly, America's Next Top Model), Laurence Fishburne as Professor Phipps (The Matrix, John Wick 2), Cole Hauser as Scott Moss (Yellowstone, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Regina King as Monet (Watchmen, If Beale Street Could Talk), and Busta Rhymes as Dreads (Halloween: Resurrection, Shaft). If you're a fan of John Singleton's socially conscious films, be sure to check out Boyz N the Hood (1991), Poetic Justice (1993), Baby Boy (2001), and Four Brothers (2005). This is the story of Monica and Quincy who both grow up next door to each other in Southern California, apparently enamored of two things: the game of basketball and each other. And as they grow up, they both develop into excellent basketball players and we also watch as their relationship develops. Omar Epps (Higher Learning, Juice) eventually plays Quincy who is the son of a retired pro basketball player (Dennis Heysbert) and has aspirations of following in his father's footsteps. And Sanaa Lathan (Brown Sugar, Alien Vs. Predator) eventually plays Monica who is trying to develop into a pro basketball player despite her mother's (Alfre Woodard) concerns about there being no future in it. What results is both a love story and sports drama which spans over fifteen years and has built quite up a devoted following since it was first released in the Spring of 2000 to solid reviews and box office. What better time to review this beloved basketball drama directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King) than JUST in time for March Madness? :) Send us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
This week Dr. Nathan Kalman-Lamb and Dr. Derek Silva drop in to talk about 1993's The Program, starring James Caan, Omar Epps, and Halle Berry. This movie was way ahead of its time in its discussions of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), concussions, and race and sexual dynamics on campus. We talk about all of this and the cost to college athletes to play the game. About our guests:Nathan Kalman-Lamb's scholarly work sits at the intersection of social theory and the sociology of sport, with a particular focus on labor, racism, and exploitation. His most recent book Game Misconduct: Injury, Fandom, and the Business of Sport, based on qualitative interviews with former professional hockey players and fans of the sport, uses Marxist-Feminist social reproduction theory to explore how the political economy of sports like hockey is predicated on an affective transfer from athletic workers to fans through the physical sacrifice that is fundamental to these 'games.'Derek Silva's areas of interest include sociocultural studies of sport, critical sociology and criminology, labour, racism, and inequality. My work can be found in the peer-reviewed journals Critical Sociology, Punishment and Society, Crime, Media, Culture, Sociology of Sport Journal, Journal of Sport & Social Issues, Policing & Society, Annals of Leisure Research, Social Science & Medicine – Qualitative Research in Health, Sociological Forum, Race & Class, Educational Gerontology, and in media outlets such as TIME Magazine, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, The Daily Beast, The Chronicle of Higher Education, Jacobin Magazine, and The Baffler Magazine.

You might've just missed this recent little supernatural horror movie that dropped onto Netflix called The Deliverance. But the Lodgecast knows that a horror movie directed by Lee Daniels deserves to be covered! We talked about our history with Mr. Daniels' films, most notably Shadowboxer (2005), Precious (2009), and The Paperboy (2012). Then we watched The Deliverance, which did not disappoint, serving up many salad dragons to our delight. The movie stars Andra Day, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Tasha Smith, Omar Epps, Mo'Nique, and Glenn Close as the unforgettable Alberta Jackson! You're gonna wanna tune into this episode and possibly fire this movie up on Netflix. Movie critics be damned, this movie is a wild ride!

We get into Danny Glovers character making his lates wife's recipe, and what family recipe have to have passed down from our elders.Jazz and Jason drops some wild family takes and The crew plays a twisted version of F/M/K brought to you by Jazz. Send us a textWhat if you could punch your way to a billion dollars or star in a scandalous public tape for the same prize? In this hilariously hypothetical episode of the Nobody's Talking Podcast, Steve, Shyrod, and Bosco dive headfirst into these outrageous possibilities, dreaming up a Netflix Boxing Edition featuring none other than Mike Tyson and Jake Paul. With oversized gloves and even bigger laughs, the hosts ruminate on the comedic chaos such scenarios would unleash, all while cheekily comparing these billion-dollar antics to celebrity scandals and the consequences of full-blown public indecency.Switching topics faster than a sports fan swaps jerseys, we share the rollercoaster ride of changing loyalties from the Chicago Bears to the Carolina Panthers, fueled by the power of team colors and fandom fervor. We get into the quirky challenges athletes face, like sun glare, and muse over the amusing parallels in everyday life. When the conversation takes a surprising twist with tales of burglaries at Patrick Mahomes' and Travis Kelce's homes, the trio enthusiastically debates the vulnerabilities faced by public figures and the intrigue of potential inside jobs, making for a lively and laugh-packed discussion on the unpredictability of fame. Our time machine then whisks us back to the nostalgic land of generational shifts, where we celebrate today's defiant grandparents and the timeless allure of 90s movie couples. 25 years after its initial release, Kurt Vonnegut's biting portrayal of America's mad chaos, BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS returns in a restored 4K version, the perfect film for our complicated times. Directed by Alan Rudolph, and starring Bruce Willis, Albert Finney, Nick Nolte, Glenne Headly, Barbara Hershey, Omar Epps, Luka Haas and many more, the incisive comedy has been overlooked for far too long. And, in conjunction with the comedy's 25th Anniversary, there's no better time to rediscover Rudolph's unique cinematic vision and the timeless relevance of Vonnegut's work in a pristine restoration ready to provoke thought and captivate audiences all over again. BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS tells the story of car dealership titan Dwayne Hoover (Bruce Willis), the most respected man in Midland City. His smiling face appears on every local channel and billboard - a shining symbol of the American success syndrome. His message is "You Can Trust Dwayne Hoover." And so they do. But Dwayne Hoover is not smiling inside. Nor can he be trusted. Dwayne's shady prosperity, picture-frame family, and small mind are cracking. His television commercial-addicted wife (Barbara Hershey) may or may not be physically present when he's with her. His son (Lukas Haas) resides in a bomb shelter aspiring to be a lounge singer. His paranoid sales manager (Nick Nolte) has a significant sex secret. A Dwayne Hoover worshipper (Omar Epps) has taken up residence on his car lot. And his adulating secretary/lover (Glenne Headly) wonders if Dwayne Hoover has changed. The reeling business titan needs to find something or someone immediately to tell him the truth, to guide him out of this punishing, yet well-deserved, self-doubt. Simultaneous to Dwayne expanding breakdown, an impoverished and nonsensical science fiction writer, Kilgore Trout (Albert Finney), is making his way to Midland City's Fine Arts Festival, hailed as the world's greatest author by Midland City's wealthiest cultural leader. Once Hoover discovers Trout's impending arrival, he is maniacally determined to meet the author and receive the message that will restore his confidence and well-being. But when their orbits finally collide, neither Dwayne Hoover, Kilgore Trout, nor Midland City is prepared for the inexplicable and volatile results.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Still figuring out some work flow issues created by the change in tools on the app used to create podcasts. However, let me get into something about soc med/content/podcasts/vlogs that the recent Marlon Wayans vs Vlad TV conflict, on X, revealed that everyone should take into consideration. This episode also includes a few thoughts on Lee Daniels' latest film on Netflix, The Deliverance, that is really more of a reaction than a full-on review. My thoughts are with stars Andra Day, Mo'Nique, Glenn Close, Caleb McLaughlin and even Omar Epps. Wood also tackles another Club Shay Shay guest in Tyrese's current interview, but so many other things overshadowed his newly released "love" music RnB album Beautiful Pain. However, the Marlon & Vlad topic sheds some light on why.

Our "Summers Sweep" look at failed movie adaptations of classic TV series continues, with one of the more "movies that time forgot" entries we've ever covered: the 1999 update of the late 60s/early 70s, "youth-delinquents-turned-undercover-cops" detective series, The Mod Squad. Despite an impressive cast - including Claire Danes, Omar Epps, Giovanni Ribisi, Dennis Farina, Josh Brolin, and Richard Jenkins - the Mod Squad movie still failed to make much of an impact with critics or audiences at the time of its release...or in the years since. Could it be that trying to update a premise so inextricably tied to a particular time-period and youth movement was a bad idea? We ponder this question and more, while also discussing the importance of exposition in origin stories, the value of commercial tie-ins with Levis Jeans, and the risks of "going Full Ribisi." So take a listen, if you can dig it, daddy-o. Our Twitter Our Facebook Our Instagram Our YouTube Trev's Letterboxd Chris' Letterboxd
