For many of us who grew up in the the 90s, Julia Stiles was an integral part of our coming of age. Her portrayal of the clever, acerbic Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You was a radical reinvention of the blonde teenage female rom-com lead. Her roles in Save The Last Dance and Mona Lisa Smile spoke to our adolescent feminist awakenings and catapulted Stiles to stardom. And, just like the heroines she played, Stiles chose to do things a bit differently. At the height of her teenage fame, she went to study English at Columbia University, continuing to act throughout her degree, most notably in the first of four Jason Bourne films. Her latest project is her directorial debut - the feature film, Wish You Were Here, which Stiles also produced and co-wrote. As a mother of three, Stiles said that her parenting informed her ability to direct. Movie of the Year: 19991999 Returns!96 Movies Enter, 16 Will SurviveThe Year Was 1999. Everyone Had a Discman. And Movies? Absolute Bangers.Back when the Taste Buds first covered the films of 1999 on Movie of the Year, they were young, naïve, and only picked eight movies. Eight! That's adorable. Now they're older, wiser, and full of regret—so they're returning to give one of the greatest years in movie history the full 16-slot bracket it deserves. That means eight more movies, a new perspective, and a much deeper dive. This premiere episode is where it all begins: they take 96 of the most iconic, beloved, and deeply weird movies of 1999, and start hacking our way down to the Sweet 16. Expect heartbreak. Expect joy. Expect someone to irrationally defend The Haunting like their life depends on it.In This Episode:The full list of 96 movies—from cult classics to forgotten flopsNostalgic tangents about Y2K, dial-up, and Taco Bell commercialsHeated debates about what counts as “Movie of the Year–worthy”Emotional breakdowns over the ones we had to cutThe 16 movies that will define the season—revealedWhy 1999?Because it gave us The Matrix, Fight Club, The Blair Witch Project, Being John Malkovich, 10 Things I Hate About You, and like 30 more that would be any other year's #1. It was the year movies peaked, and we're finally giving it the coverage it deserves—with twice the movies and at least three times the yelling.Tell Us We're Wrong:You definitely have opinions. Good.Hit us up on Instagram @yourpopfilter, or email us at popfilterco@gmail and let us know which movies should have made the cut, which ones absolutely shouldn't have, and how mad you are that we even considered Inspector Gadget.Don't Miss a Single Episode:Make sure you subscribe, rate, and review wherever you get your podcasts. That way, you'll be there for the whole ride—from 96 to the Final Four, all the way to the 1999 Movie of the Year. This one's gonna be a journey. A journey to find the single greatest movie out of all of the films of 1999.

Book Vs. Movie: 10 Things I Hate About YouThe Taming of the Shrew & the 1999 Heath Ledger Film10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, reimagining the story in a high school setting. In both works, the plot revolves around two sisters—one desirable and another perceived as problematic. In The Taming of the Shrew, the younger, more attractive Bianca cannot marry until her older, strong-willed sister, Katherina, finds a husband. Similarly, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford can only date if her rebellious, sharp-tongued sister, Kat, does too. The character of Petruchio in Shakespeare's play, who is hired to "tame" Katherina and make her marriageable, is mirrored in Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), who is paid to date Kat (Julia Stiles) so that Bianca can start dating.Despite the initial financial motivation, Petruchio and Patrick develop genuine feelings for their partners. While The Taming of the Shrew ends with Katherina seemingly submitting to societal expectations, 10 Things I Hate About You gives Kat more agency. She remains independent but opens up to love, showing a more modern and feminist take on Shakespeare's story. Between the play & the film--which did we prefer? Listen to find out! The new podcast will come out once per month and it's about the classic Twilight Zone series. Along with Friend of the Show Patrick Perot (the 10 Things I Hate About You episode, the Blair Witch Project episode, Rural Route Nine), Matt will go through each episode of The Twilight Zone—one episode per podcast—in chronological order. And you can try out that podcast now: The Sign Post Up Ahead. An amnesiac wanders through a town, unable to find a single human being, but always feeling like somebody is just out of reach. Creepy! How well does this episode serve as an introduction to The Twilight Zone? How well does it stand on its own? And how much does it hold up now?  Plus, there's a lot of talk about the space race, the Cold War, and America's obsession with going to the moon. "Where Is Everybody" originally aired October 2, 1959; directed by Robert Stevens; written by Rod Serling; starring Earl Holliman.

In this episode, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1999 to pick a teen high school romantic comedy loosely based on one of the more controversial plays by history's most celebrated playwright, William Shakespeare. Now, Shakespeare is of course ubiquitously revered as the greatest writer the English language has ever known, but it's worth asking from time to time, did any of his plays contain motorcycle stunts, ska music, outdoor paintball, high school students inexplicably dressed as cowboys, Seattle's Fremont Troll sculpture, a large penis drawn on the face of the head elf from The Santa Clause, or Larry Miller rattling off hip-hop slang? Tragically, no, they did not. But, luckily for literature lovers the world over, the writers of The House Bunny and the director of the Martin Lawrence vehicle Black Knight eventually came along to correct these grievous oversights on the Bard of Avon's part.
