We meet leading artist Alvaro Barrington, presented by BMW.We explore his work since we last met him on the podcast a few years ago, his current, epic solo 'Grace' at Tate Britain's Duveen Galleries, as well as a very cool recent collaboration with BMW at Frieze Seoul. Inspired by the BMW Art Car Collection and curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, the artist has paint over seven miniature i7s, drawing inspiration from video games and music.Barrington's practice explores interconnected histories of cultural production. Considering himself primarily a painter, Barrington's multimedia approach to image-making employs burlap, textiles, postcards and clothing, exploring how materials themselves can function as visual tools while referencing their personal, political and commercial histories. Barrington is interested in how the vehicles of the future will have the potential to recognise our moods, emotions and schedules, and as such adapt to them accordingly. The artist explores the future of cars reimagined as self-driving entertainment units and places for meeting that can help bridge different cultures through new technologies such as instant language translation. Utilising artificial intelligence, cars will go far beyond their purely transporting function and instead help us foster new connections and fulfil our daily needs.For this project, Barrington looked into video games centered around cars, which were not only important as play and entertainment, but also as platforms for music and culture. Exploring the history of cars and other vehicles that enable travel and movement, the artist has focused on the intersection of cars and culture and the way they have influenced one another. Merging these references, the artist created 7 unique cars, each featuring a drawing from a film, music video or portraying a cultural figure, which remain influential in Barrington's life and practice.For his Tate Britain commission, Barrington's personal exploration of identity and belonging is a journey in three parts honouring his grandmother, sister and mother.He draws from personal memories across time and place, from his grandmother's Caribbean home where a thunderstorm hammers on the corrugated tin roof, to the exhilarating energy of Carnival. The first response from our lovely guest is that 'Grace is an invisible energy all around us that excuses us all when we mess up." Cassey's first thought," Grace is a gift of permission that excuses me of my short comings." For Stacy, Grace is the the final step of forgiveness. What sin? What indiscretion? What bad choice? Relax with us a bit and open your mind to your concept of GRACE.

Sometimes I hear a 'Grace' sermon that is just terrific... until the last five minutes. During the last five minutes, the preacher seems pressed to tell me how I should respond, at least mentally, to the message of God's One-Way Love. The preacher -- in good faith and sincerity, to be sure -- tells me to "relax into the Message", "accept the Gift", "live into It", "let It sink in", "allow It to become part of you". And although that sounds good, it ends up, at least for me, feeling abstract. It may even convey a(n un-intended) sense of pressure, as there is still something to do. Which I can't seem to do. It's a little like what Roman Catholics sometimes describe as the need to perpetually return to the Confessional because they haven't quite taken it in, i.e., the forgiveness they were told they had last week. Luther taught something different. (As did St. Paul.) They both taught that one's response to the Gospel is automatic. When you are "One-Way-LUV'd", you automatically wish to respond -- with love! Belovedness engenders loving back. I mean, look: it's true in Romantic Love. When you are sincerely loved by another person, no one needs to tell you how to respond. You always, or almost always, respond by desiring to love the other altruistically -- selflessly -- empathetically. That just happens. You don't need imperatives, even subtle ones; nor instructions. That's the point of this 350th Episode of PZ's Podcast. I am particularly proud of it. It is dedicated to Tullian Tchividjian and his remarkable ministry of One-Way Love. 'Grace's dad', Scott Schara is the founder and president of Our Amazing Grace's Light Shines On, Inc., and is an advocate exposing how hospital systems and personnel are being used for evil. He has been fighting for truth and raising awareness about government corruption, big pharma, and dangerous hospital protocols. Scott and Cindy's daughter, Grace (19), was given a lethal combination of medications and, against the family's wishes, was also labeled DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). God has infinite powers (or shaktis). However, there is only one fundamental aspect of God where He manifests all His infinite powers. The Vedas say that although the formless (or Impersonal) Brahm has all the powers of God, none of His powers are manifest in Brahm except Sat-Chit-Ananda. 'Grace' is also one of His power. Since Brahm doesn't manifest the powers of God, that means He won't grace us. If we want God's grace, we need to understand that aspect of God where He manifests all His powers. Between covering the Irish, playing for Coach Rockne, coaching under a Four Horseman, becoming the program's first historian, and writing a compelling history of early  Notre Dame football, Chet takes the cake as the biggest Note Dame fan ever.  But he was so much more than that. He knew what it meant to be a Notre Dame man. He was a living incarnate of the spirit of Notre Dame. Even standing just 5'6 and tipping the scales at 138 pounds as a player, he was larger than life. Sadly, Chet has been widely forgotten.  Let's start changing that today. -Alex
