The MTA says they'll stop selling MetroCards by the end of the year, as part of the agency's push to convert all subway and bus fare collection to the tap-to-pay OMNY system. Plus, a new report reveals the number of eviction filings in the city declined nearly 50% between 2017 and 2024. And finally, a doctor and her patient reflect on the COVID pandemic, 5 years on.
This is the All Local 4PM update for Monday, February 17, 2025.
Some City Council members are criticizing Mayor Eric Adams' proposal to allow federal immigration officers into Rikers Island, arguing it could endanger pre-trial detainees. Meanwhile, two council members are introducing legislation to prevent landlords from buying their way out of complying with the city's landmark climate law, Local Law 97, which requires buildings to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Also, Friday is the last day to apply for a seat on a community board in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Plus, this week's On the Way transit segment covers flagged OMNY student cards, a baby born on the subway, and what's behind the wrapped J/M/Z train structures.
How can data and artificial intelligence reshape healthcare to create better patient outcomes? In this episode of Tech Talks Daily, I speak with Dr. Mitesh Rao, founder and CEO of OMNY Health, about his mission to build a more connected and collaborative healthcare system. With a background in emergency medicine and hospital leadership, he launched OMNY Health out of frustration with the siloed nature of healthcare data, which limits innovation and patient care. OMNY Health now represents data from nearly 80 million patients across the U.S., serving as a bridge between healthcare providers, researchers, and life sciences companies. Dr. Rao explains how his company is tackling some of the biggest challenges in healthcare—unifying fragmented data, ensuring compliance with privacy regulations, and providing a secure foundation for AI-driven advancements in medicine. We explore how this data network is enabling breakthroughs in precision medicine, pharmacovigilance, and clinical research, ensuring that new treatments are developed based on real-world evidence. Dr. Rao also shares insights on the role of AI in healthcare, the importance of diverse and representative data in training AI models, and how secure, compliant data-sharing can support the next wave of medical innovation. With plans to expand OMNY Health's network to 150 million patients, what does the future hold for healthcare data and AI-driven medicine? Join the conversation to find out, and share your thoughts on the role of data in transforming patient care.

If it's your first time (or even 3rd or 4th) visiting NYC, you should be aware of some common mistakes to avoid! Thinking you have to stay in Times Square. You don't need to stay in Times Square, but you should stay in Manhattan and you should stay within 5-10 minutes of a subway station. You can take public transit from every single airport. You don't have to take an Uber or Lyft! Download our free transportation guide here. You don't have to engage with people who are trying to talk to you on the street (pedi cabs, CD people, breakdancers, characters in Times Square, comedy shows, Staten Island Ferry). Most of them are trying to take advantage of you. Avoid eating at (most) food carts unless you know it's reputable. Unless you can look up reviews about it online, don't eat there. You do NOT need to buy a subway card. There is no benefit to buying the week-long pass because the discount gets applied automatically when you use Omny, the tap to pay service. You can always tap a credit card that has a tap to pay or use Apple Pay on your phone. This Episode's You'll Have to Check It Out Segment: Terra Blues Terra Blues Jazz Club ($20 cover on the weekends). You are paying to get in, and once you are in, you can stay as long as you want. First come, first served seating, but some reservations are available (until around 8pm) if you plan ahead. Terra Blues has talented artists, great cocktails, and a huge whiskey list. Bonus Mistake: Don't walk slow on sidewalks and especially don't take up the entire sidewalk! See our full sidewalk guide here.
Florida, schmorida. After enjoying a pandemic-era boom where many a weary northerner packed up and moved to the Sunshine State, the bloom is off the citrus tree, new research suggests. In the headlines on #TheUpdate this Monday, the top legal adviser to Mayor Adams resigned abruptly over the weekend, the latest sign of instability in the Democrat's administration as it deals with multiple federal investigations. These kids are taking the city and the MTA for a ride. New York City students are hawking their new, school-issued OMNY cards for up to $1,500 to straphangers looking to get their hands on the subway and bus passes, which offer four free rides a day for a year. And in Florida, Sunday was to be a day of relative rest for Donald Trump, a rare breather this deep into a presidential campaign. Aside from sounding off on social media, golf was on the agenda. Then the Secret Service spotted the muzzle of a rifle sticking out of a fence in bushes at Trump's West Palm Beach golf club, and everything changed. For the second time in just over two months, someone apparently tried to shoot Trump and came dangerously close to the former president in that effort — within 500 yards Sunday, law enforcement officials said.

Send us a Text Message.Anyone can sell a product to a customer. But there's a big difference between those businesses with one-time purchasers and those whose customers keep on coming back for more. The key to gaining (and then retaining) loyal customers lies in building not just a business, but a brand that people are willing to follow. Our guest this week is Brittany Garbutt, founder and CEO of Pretzel, a bakery focusing solely on producing artisanal pretzel products.
