A good chunk of Supergirl’s DNA can be traced back to True Grit by way of the comics miniseries the film is adapting, which is why we paired it with Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2010 version of that story. But as our discussion of Craig Gillespie’s new entry in James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe details, Supergirl often feels less indebted to its space-western source material than to several other superhero films that preceded it, including some of Gunn’s. That makes it tough to balance a film we all consider okay-at-best against a stone-cold Coens classic, but we attempt to anyway in Connections as we consider these two films’ shared interest in vengeance, western tropes, and really, really bad guys with murky motivations. Then in Your Next Picture Show, we honorTrue Grit’s star-making performance with a recommendation for another Hailee Steinfeld film that’s a favorite of this podcast, The Edge of Seventeen. Hello, movie maniacs! This week Mary and David watched Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl. Gillespie has directed a couple of films that Mary and David love – I, Tonya and the Fright Night remake – so they were really looking forward to this film. They talked about the gross hate campaign directed at yet another female-led superhero movie; admired the backstory that explains so much of Kara’s behaviour; got irretrievably stuck on James Gunn’s Peacemaker series; and overall enjoyed the movie quite a bit despite a few reservations. Not sure what to make of this latest iteration of Supergirl? Well, let Mary and David fansplain it for you!

[School of Movies 2026] Following on from the sunny and heartfelt success of James Gunn's 2025 Superman we have the scrappy follow-up by Craig Gillespie, detailing the lifestyle of Kal-El's cousin. Gillespie most likely got the job after two filmic accomplishments in spotlighting grubby, depressed punk girls who nobody likes except the audience; I, Tonya and Cruella. Sharon and I went all out on this, reading the source book, 'Woman of Tomorrow' by Tom King & Bilquis Evely, which itself draws structural and thematic inspiration from specifically the Coen Brothers adaptation of True Grit by Charles Portis. What we are able to do is outline clearly where the film differs from the book and where the book differs from both film and original book to create this turducken of revenge. This episode is totally worth listening to, even if you haven't seen this box office bomb that everyone we talk to seems to like and everyone we don't know personally seems to despise. Supergirl was recently released on June 26th with Milly Alcock starring in the title role of Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El. Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, it is the second film set in the DC Universe (DCU) following last year's Superman. The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Corenswet returning as Superman, and Jason Momoa as fan favorite character Lobo! In the film, Kara embarks on a journey across the galaxy to hunt down an adversary who has harmed her pet dog Krypto in a story based in part on the 2021 Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic miniseries by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Steve, Caleb and Billy Z relay what they thought of the film (spoilers included) and also discuss some of the "fandom" reaction to it. And instead of our regular round table, as we just said farewell to Pride month the CBB boys offer up LGBTQIA+ themed comics graphic novels they feel should be on alphabet mafia bookshelves.  And what are those works? Supergirl This week we rocket headfirst into the second film of the new-ish DC Cinematic Universe; Supergirl, a character who's been orbiting the DC universe since the Silver Age, occasionally stepping out from Superman's shadow to remind everyone that capes aren't a boys-only club. Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock alongside Eve Ridley, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Jason Momoa desperately trying to wash off the fishy smell of Aquaman. We find Kara Zor-El trading Metropolis for the far reaches of space and her colourful costume for a pair of sunnies with a tan duster. There's the CGI dog again, a revenge quest, and a tone that suggests that maybe this isn't your Saturday-morning cartoon version of heroism. The film has already sparked conversations about how female superheroes are portrayed and whether they're being written with the same complexity, agency, and messy humanity as their male counterparts… or whether we're still stuck in orbit around old tropes. Enter your podcast super-friends: Jill, providing super strength and razor-sharp insight; Dion, keeping things grounded (mostly); Peta, flying high as ever; and Quinny, heroically attempting to hold it all together while absolutely not getting distracted by space dogs or continuity debates. Together, they tackle not just Supergirl itself, but the bigger question: How do we fairly critique female-lead films in the superhero genre today? And why is that such a hard question to ask? Synopsis Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, joins forces with an unlikely companion on an interstellar journey of vengeance and justice when an unexpected adversary strikes too close to home. https://youtu.be/kAJcpCRVwPU A huge shout-out to the super heroic folks who fly in to join our moderated live-chat during the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST. No fence-sitting — just a real debate about whether Craig Gillespie's DCU origin story actually works. We break down Milly Alcock's performance as Kara Zor-El, the galactic revenge story adapted from Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Jason Momoa's Lobo and what his presence actually adds (or doesn't), villain Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts) and whether he lands, the late arrival of the suit, the Krypton lore that's already dividing DC fans, and what David Corenswet's Superman cameo contributes. We also get into the box office disappointment, the mixed critical reception, and whether any of that should change how you feel walking into the theater.Did the DCU get its Supergirl right? Supergirl is a 2026 superhero film based on the DC Comics character, directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay by Ana Nogueira. Produced by DC Studios' James Gunn and Peter Safran, it is the second theatrical entry in the new DC Universe (DCU). Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, David Corenswet, and Jason Momoa. Adapted from Tom King and Bilquis Evely's acclaimed Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, the film follows Kara on a galaxy-spanning quest for vengeance that ultimately forces her to confront grief, justice, and her own identity. A standalone Supergirl project had been in development during the DC Extended Universe era after Sasha Calle's debut in The Flash (2023), but Gunn and Safran rebooted the concept following their appointment as co-heads of DC Studios in 2022. Filmed in England and Scotland during early 2025, Supergirl premiered in Brooklyn on June 22, 2026, opened nationwide on June 26 as part of DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, received mixed reviews from critics, and has grossed approximately $63 million worldwide to date.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

SPOILERS!!!!Dave's just back from vacation in Maine, so he and Cody recorded this one as an unedited, free-flowing conversation. They review Supergirl, the second film in James Gunn's rebooted DCU. They dig into Milly Alcock carrying the movie almost single-handedly, the grief and trauma (and Krypto violence) at the story's core, the choices with the ending, the literally-too-dark visuals, and Lobo as a wasted character. Plus a callback to Cody's earlier hot take on the pre-release backlash, the Deeper Themes turn on grief and connection, a Tom Hardy recast, and an honest split on whether we're nearing the end of the theatrical era. This is an unedited live conversation, so expect a looser, shorter hang than usual.Movie reviewed: Supergirl (2026) — Directed by Craig Gillespie, written by Ana Nogueira, based on Tom King's comic.
