1-Week Rental heads down to Pigeon Creek, Alabama, where things are just a little bit different than we're used to up in the big city. Will Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) choose Jake (Josh Lucas), her rugged old flame with a take-no-prisoners attitude? Or will she choose Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), the son of a billionaire who's literally being groomed to be president? Either way, this movie's gonna make you laugh, and it's gonna make you think. But before examining Sweet Home Alabama in detail, Laci and Matt go through the history of its production, and then take a long look at Reese Witherspoon's movie career and her recent pivot into business mogul and champion of private equity and artificial intelligence. There are many reasons to watch movies. We watch them to learn, to laugh, to cheer, jeer, and fear. One of the most wonderful things about film is that they allow us to escape reality, if only for a couple of hours. Like many of you I have a long list of “feel good” films I put on when times are bleak and I want to escape. On this episode I am recommending four “feel good” movies maybe you haven't seen in a while or at all.First up is 1980's The Private Eyes starring Don Knotts and Tim Conway as investigators from Scotland Yard sent to investigate the murders of Lord and Lady Morley after being contacted by… Lord Morley? It's a race against time as the mansion's staff, all of whom are suspects, are being killed faster than they can be interviewed. The Private Eyes was part of the resurgence of “darl house” movies we saw in the 1970s and 1980s that included Murder by Death, Clue, and Haunted Honeymoon. Next is 1981's Under the Rainbow, a film that did terribly at the box office but found a second life on cable television. When a German spy (who happens to be a little person) and a Japanese spy (disguised as a tourist) make plans to exchange secrets at a hotel, they never could have predicted that the location would be overrun by all the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz along with an entire busload of Japanese tourists! Chevy Chase once called this film “the worst film ever made” while Carrie Fisher simply said it was “the worst film I ever made.” They can say what they want; this slapstick comedy always puts a smile on my face.In 1989's Loveryboy, Randy picks up a job delivering pizza while serving extra anchovies and a slice of love to a growing list of female customers. As someone who delivered pizzas in college I can tell you all of us dreamed that someday we wold get a delivery for “extra anchovies.” Loverboy was one of four films Patrick Dempsey starred in during the 1980s and 1990s before going on to become “McDreamy” later on Gray's Anatomy. Featuring Carrie Fisher, Kirstie Alley, and lots and lots of anchovies. Our final film this week is 1986's Back to School. When millionaure Thornton Melon (Rodney Dangerfield) discovers his son Jason has lost interest in college, he agrees to enroll himself so that the two of them can become freshmen together. Thornton gets accepted into college after making a large donation, sends his personal secretary to classes for him to take notes, has a staff of employees doing his homework and spends most of his nights partying. Both father and son eventually learn that money can't buy everything — not pride, respect, or love. What are your favorite “feel good” movies? This week on Forgotten Cinema: Lead Up, the Mikes continue their road toward "Scream 7" with "Scream 3", the most divisive entry in the franchise.Coming off "Scream 2", the highest-reviewed film in the series, "Scream 3" holds the unfortunate distinction of being the worst reviewed. Mike Field still enjoys the movie, but it is his least favorite of the franchise so far. His biggest issue comes down to the killer reveal, which he finds underwhelming, especially when you factor in the original script, the late production change to a single killer, and the moments where you can clearly tell the film was staged for two Ghostfaces.Mike Butler also enjoys the film, especially the Gale & Dewey relationship, but shares some of those frustrations. He would have preferred the climax to stay within the Hollywood studio setting that the movie spends so much time establishing, rather than shifting to a Scooby-Doo-style mansion. He also argues that Patrick Dempsey being revealed as the killer and Sidney's half-brother would have made far more sense both narratively and thematically.Despite its flaws, "Scream 3" is still a fun watch. The kills are inventive, the meta elements continue to evolve, and Parker Posey is a standout as the actress portraying Gale Weathers in the Stab films within the film. It may be messy and compromised, but it still understands the spirit of the franchise and delivers plenty to enjoy. So join the Mikes as the go through each film in the "Scream" saga leading up to the release of "Scream 7".Are you sad we never got to see a full episode of "100% Cotton"? "The Final Scream," the third and final spec script written LA-Times best-selling writer, Joe Vallese, will be released on the SWRCS podcast on December 19, 2025, on the heels of the Scream (1996) anniversary and the holiday season.  This script follows "Scream 7" (the end of the Carpenter sister era, episode 112) and "Screams (a Gale-centric script, episode 155). "The Final Scream" completes this SWRCS trilogy by focusing on Sidney's family (two younger daughters, unlike Tatum in the upcoming Scream 7) and her marriage to Mark Kinciad (not Evans, like in the upcoming Scream 7).  The plot is: Sidney Prescott's sense of peace and security is unmoored by the revelation of a dark secret  - and a slew of new Ghostface murders hitting too close to home. We hope this script provides some closure to the Sidney/Mark Kincaid fans since Patrick Dempsey did not return for the feature film releasing in February. "The Final Scream" is emotional and contemplative, yet it's also epic and wide in scope. Gale Weathers also assumes an important role and the arc of the film ties into the fabric of the original trilogy. Like the past two scripts, "The Final Scream" will be read aloud by Ryan like an audio book and released as a podcast episode. The script itself will be available to Patreon subscribers Tier 2 and above to read.  We hope to see everyone on December 19 for the premiere!

Welcome to 19Stories: from Fear to Hope. I'm your host, Cheryl Holling, in this podcast we explore stories of resilience, transformation, and the courage to step into new beginnings. My guest today is Amy Bolduc, a woman whose life beautifully weaves together compassion, creativity, and community. After years in her hometown of Brunswick, Maine, Amy relocated to Virginia—a move inspired by her desire for a longer growing season and a fresh chapter in life. She shares her home with a rescue dog, two cats, and a flock of chickens while balancing her work in healthcare, her award-winning podcast 'Grounded in Maine', and her small-batch jam business, aptly named 'Amy's Garden Jam'. Amy is also a contributing author to Breaking the Silence, Volume 3, an anthology that uplifts survivors' voices and offers readers the strength of shared healing. I first met Amy through the New England Podcasters Group, founded by the always-inspiring Ande Lyons, where I quickly came to admire Amy's warmth, authenticity, and the powerful way she uses her involvement with the New England Podcasters community. In today's conversation, you'll hear about what motivated Amy's move, how sustainability fuels her work, her role in Breaking the Silence, and the many ways she stays grounded while inspiring others to do the same. “First, he's a geek, and then you start going out with him. Then he's a geek again. Honey, I don't know what a geek is." We watched the geek-to-chic classic "Can't Buy Me Love" with our friend Ben Cheeves, and there's a $1,000 telescope at the mall with all of our names on it. This modern-day Pygmalion in high school may be well-worn territory today, but way back in 1987, this concept was fresh as a daisy. Nerdy Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) uses his saved-up lawn-mowing cash to bail head cheerleader Cindy Mancini (Amanda Peterson) out of some fiduciary troubles, and young Ronald goes from "totally geek to totally chic." Patrick Dempsey is adorable in this movie, and much like Audrey Hepburn and Rachel Leigh Cook after him, it just takes a bit of hair product and chucking those glasses for the audience to realize he wasn't the horrid slob the movie characters all think he is. Dr. McDreamy may be years away, but we still see the spark of the handsome man everyone's mom loves - that effortless mop of curls is the envy of women everywhere, and that smile can just knock your socks off! Amanda Peterson is really doing some good work as well - Cindy never comes off mean-spirited or above Ronald - we leave that to the truly rotted group of popular kids. We do get some "Saved by the Bell" vibes from the movie, and sometimes the script is heavy-handed, but this movie is a 1987 time capsule if there ever was one. Every house in suburbia had that daybed, and if you owned or coveted a white convertible Volkswagen Cabriolet, you're gay now. We don't make the rules.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Bluesky: @MTMUGPod.bsky.social Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram Peterlasagna
