There's a good chance you've discovered at least one new artist through social media, more specifically TikTok in the last 5 years. With the uncertainty surrounding TikTok's future, I had a chat with one of the artists I discovered because of the clock app, Shane Hurst of Adjust The Sails. In our chat we discussed: -What happens if TikTok goes away? -How will musicians pivot? -What other ways can we discover new artists? -Why does he get compared to The Front Bottoms so often? ...and much more! We had the pleasure of interviewing Slow Joy over Zoom video!Slow Joy, the solo project of Dallas based, New Mexican born Chicano artist Esteban Flores, is thrilled to announce his first official US headline tour. The February 2025 run has Flores out supporting his Mi Amigo Slow Joy EP, which was released June 7th, 2024 via Mick Music. Produced by Mike Sapone (Oso Oso, The Front Bottoms), the EP earned Slow Joy the “Best New Band” designation in the Dallas Observer's Annual “Best of Dallas” roundup and drew comparisons to The Pixies, Modest Mouse and Smashing Pumpkins.Slow Joy spent all of the fall on the road supporting Real Friends alongside Can't Swim and Carly Cosgrove on their Forever And Ever and Ever And Ever And Ever And Ever And Ever Tour. The two month long tour visited most every major city across the US and was Slow Joy's biggest trek to date. Mi Amigo Slow Joy follows 2023's Wildflower EP. The new EP was extremely well received, with FLOOD writing, “...the EP is a celebration of the past three decades of alternative rock music condensed into something more broadly appealing than any of Nevermind's non-single tracks.” The Chicago Reader described the Mi Amigo Slow Joy EP as “...melanges of grungy shoegaze.” And KXT 91.7 said the EP features “crunchy, alt-rock-inflected soundscapes [with] searching, vulnerable lyrics.” Flores' growth as a songwriter and musician can be heard throughout the four new tracks, an accomplishment he credits Sapone for helping him to achieve.Slow Joy is currently working with Sapone on his debut album, due in early 2025. In the meantime, catch Flores and his band on tour through February. Eliza and the Delusionals' journey is packed with memorable moments. From the casual banter about food in the Virgin Lounge to the intense recording sessions with Holy Holy, each experience has shaped their musical identity. Oscar's influence pushed them to explore new creative depths, even featuring his dog's breathing sounds on their album. Their recording routine, filled with golden moments and hearty roast dinners, reflects their dedication to crafting authentic music. However, not all experiences were smooth sailing, as Oscar's adamant refusal to host bands again attests. Yet, playing live, whether on tour with The Front Bottoms or Luca Brasi, has been a highlight, even amidst the chaos of rationing chips and unexpected mishaps like getting their bus stuck on the way to Aspen. As they anticipate their upcoming album release and reflect on collaborations with icons like Butch Vig and Bryan from Silver Sun Pick Ups, Eliza and the Delusionals remain grounded by the warmth of the music community. From unforgettable encounters at festivals like Bottlerock to chance (and hilarious) meetings with industry figures like Dicko from Australian Idol, their journey is a testament to perseverance and passion in the ever-evolving world of music. We're getting a massive National Tour and WE cannot wait!!!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We were talking about front bottoms on the show this morning for some reason and Kate revealed a hilarious story about what Mae did when they saw an art piece on the subject that sent Kate into a panic. Plus we're talking all about engagement rings and if you find the one your hubby picked out for you ugly af. And we've had an idea to host a single's party... Would anyone be down to come? For a majority of his music career, Erik Kase Romero has been behind the scenes. Romero has developed into a prominent music producer – most notably working with the Front Bottoms (also plays instrumentals in the live experience), Lorde, and the Bouncing Souls. Romero has developed a name for himself in the industry and his musical genius is something that musicians desire. A quick peek at his website takes the viewer into a magical journey that involves a large list of production. It's a list that would be considered a “dream” for anyone just breaking into the business. Romero is now a seasoned veteran and in some ways can be picky when thinking about who he will invite to his home studio next. Romero has been involved in bands on the local circuit for years now. But, what seemed like a silly idea, quickly became a reality over the past year. Romero made the decision to branch out with his abilities and start a solo project. While it has been a great success so far, it was no easy decision. As previously stated, Romero has always been in the background through production and instrumentals in various groups. His solo act is serving as a time where he has the mic and the listeners get to hear his powerful words. His single still already caught the listener's attention for how vulnerable and relatable Romero is through his lyrics. While Romero will continue to push his songs through social media and has several live shows coming up, he does not care for commercial success. This project is not meant to result in headlining huge venues, but instead it's another chance to grow as a musical mind, and have some fun while doing so. How to be still and still be here is set to be released tomorrow. Make sure to give it a listen and support Romero as he takes on this solo adventure. GateCrashers' Music May-hem special continues with this 3rd installment, where Dan, Jake, and Gabrielle get together to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the The Front Bottoms' fourth album, Talon of the Hawk, released May 21st, 2013. CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussions of heavy topics such as drug use, alcoholism, mental illness, and more. Their second studio album with Bar/None, Talon of the Hawk speaks of friendships lost, ex-girlfriends, unexpected twists in life, depression, addictions, and coming-of-age themes that also reverberate throughout the rest of their discography as common denominators, but achieving its own specific tone to set it apart from other projects from the band. Dan, Jake, and Gabrielle go through the 12 tracks of the The Front Bottoms album in a more relaxed and less personal manner than previously seen in the The Wonder Years episode, reflecting Talon of the Hawk's own style as a more energetic approach to the heavy subject matters it deals with. With straightforward lyrics and a stripped-down sound, the group discusses the nature of the genre and the band, which aims to feel under-produced and naturalistic with stylistic choices such as out-of-tune vocals. The Front Bottoms are a folk punk, midwest emo band from Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey, consisting of lead vocalist and guitarist Brian Sella and drummer Mat Uychich, and counting with various touring guest artists throughout their career. Beginning in 2007, after Sella finished his first year of college, the band has now seven studio albums under their belt and has become one of the most successful bands in the midwest emo genre. Be sure to stay tuned for more music episodes! If you like the track-by-track breakdown of iconic albums, please be sure to give us feedback! If people enjoy this, we will continue to tackle more genres and artists to have conversations about the music and lyrics.

Baseball players have found creative ways to sustain injuries through the years, from turning off the alarm clock to buttering a roll to taking a bite from a microwaved donut to playing Guitar Hero. The week, the Hooks & Runs crew examines these and other injuries and asks why baseball players are so susceptible to such bizarre mishaps. When, for example, is the last time you heard about a professional football or baseball player tearing a meniscus delivering a shaving cream pie to a teammate's face ... or for that matter, shaking hands.Join our Discord: https://discord.gg/tT8d3pVUsNCheck It OutRex tells us about the Front Bottoms concert he attended at Emo's in Austin.Craig recommends "Trainwreck: Woodstock '99," a three-part Netflix documentary released in Austin 2022. This week's guest is Aymen Saleh. The Milwaukee singer, songwriter and producer — who releases music under the Holy Pinto moniker — has kept busy of late with a steady run of local performances, semi-frequent tours and collaborations with artists from all ends of the musical spectrum. Long before he became an unlikely ambassador for the Milwaukee music scene, Saleh was growing up in Canterbury, England, and devoting his time to learning the drums and guitar. Recently, Saleh joined My First Band host Tyler Maas at Milwaukee Record headquarters to talk about modern musical happenings, upcoming work (including an upcoming song with Bartees Strange) and how music transported him across an ocean and squarely into the unknown. Over the course of the conversation, Saleh talked about playing some of his first concerts in Canterbury, moving to London to study music, starting a band with a longtime friend, some important advice he got from The Front Bottoms and how a random set of circumstances and the kindness of strangers found the kid from England eventually calling Milwaukee, Wisconsin, his home. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Holy Pinto ("Milwaukee").
We have some New Jersey love for this one! Jared Hart of Mercy Union and formerly of The Scandals joins the pod in episode No. 116. There are some incredible stories about Hart growing up in the punk scene of NJ. Hart has been hooked on punk since hearing Rancid in the school yard at a young age. It continued throughout his time going to the Asbury Lanes and some of New Jersey's punk venues. Music eventually opened up his world. He was finally able to see the world being in a band, something Hart never thought he would be able to do. He also made valuable friendships which he still holds close to him to this day. Jersey is often considered a "B market" when people plan tours with New York and Philly surrounding the state, but a bunch of the great bands are here (for example Bouncing Souls, Gaslight Anthem, and The Front Bottoms). Hart talks about bands around him growing up and how they paved the way for his ability to tour and continue to write songs. Some awesome bands mentioned in this episode and Jared has incredible stories from when he was breaking into the scene. In the words of Hart: "Everyone knows a band is from Jersey, no one is hiding it." We also go into some deep subjects like watching his best friends leave bands and music as whole, and trying to keep the passion for writing through all of that. Hart says music is the only thing he is comfortable doing and the only thing he ever wanted to do. We also hear about Scandals stories, a band that accomplished so much, and never truly had a formal ending - but Hart says he was burnt out from playing the songs (leaves the door open for a show sometime down the road). We close out this episode talking about his current project, Mercy Union, and what they are currently working on. Why discuss Valentine by Snail Mail on Valentine's Day when you can discuss TFB?? The Front Bottoms are a pop-punk staple and recently had their ten-year anniversary for their self-titled album from 2011, which is what we will be discussing on this episode of the Roundtable with two special guests Ash Tuesday and Nicci Tait. The Front Bottoms are a successful emo band, even though the modern music landscape has turned the phrase “successful emo band” into an oxymoron. After years of small tours and various recordings, TFB vaulted into the national music consciousness with 2013's Talon of the Hawk. The success of that record garnered major label attention, and TFB subsequently signed with Fueled by Ramen. Their first album on Fueled by Ramen, the hilariously titled Back on Top, proved that signing with a major wouldn't alter their sound too much. Their second Fueled by entry, 2017's divisive Going Grey, felt more major label-ey, with it's soaring synthesizers and big-budget production flourishes bedazzled some fans and pissed off some others. In Sickness and in Flames, released August 21, 2020, could not have been more anticipated by the PGP crew. As always we deep dive our favorite tracks, single out some Xanga-headline-worthy lyrics, and sound dope as hell doing it. Remember to subscribe, rate, and review.
