Book Vs. Movie: 10 Things I Hate About YouThe Taming of the Shrew & the 1999 Heath Ledger Film10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, reimagining the story in a high school setting. In both works, the plot revolves around two sisters—one desirable and another perceived as problematic. In The Taming of the Shrew, the younger, more attractive Bianca cannot marry until her older, strong-willed sister, Katherina, finds a husband. Similarly, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Bianca Stratford can only date if her rebellious, sharp-tongued sister, Kat, does too. The character of Petruchio in Shakespeare's play, who is hired to "tame" Katherina and make her marriageable, is mirrored in Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), who is paid to date Kat (Julia Stiles) so that Bianca can start dating.Despite the initial financial motivation, Petruchio and Patrick develop genuine feelings for their partners. While The Taming of the Shrew ends with Katherina seemingly submitting to societal expectations, 10 Things I Hate About You gives Kat more agency. She remains independent but opens up to love, showing a more modern and feminist take on Shakespeare's story. Between the play & the film--which did we prefer? Listen to find out! The Journey to Becoming | Self Improvement, Productivity, Lower Stress
In this powerful and deeply personal episode, we're joined by Shayla Huber—author of “10 Things I Hate About My Husband: How God Healed My Heart, Restored My Marriage & Set Me Free.” Shayla vulnerably shares her journey of frustration, brokenness, and ultimately, spiritual transformation. You'll hear how it wasn't her husband who needed to change first—it was her own heart that needed healing. Through her relationship with God, Shayla found freedom, perspective, and restoration in her marriage that she never imagined possible. If you're feeling stuck, discouraged, or even resentful in your relationship, this episode offers hope and encouragement from a woman who's been there. This conversation is a reminder that true healing and lasting change start with us—and that with God, restoration is always possible.

This week, fresh off of hanging out in person in Vancouver over the weekend, your intrepid hosts are taming the shrew in a modern high school setting to undeniably classic results as we close out Feb2ary Is For Lovers with the movie that launched Heath Ledger to stardom. It's 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You, directed by Gil Junger and starring Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Larisa Oleynik, David Krumholtz, Andrew Keegan, Susan May Pratt, Gabrielle Union, Larry Miller and Allison Janney. The first of a couple Shakespeare adaptations transposed into modern high school for Stiles, the movie makes good use of her charms as well, but this is undeniably Ledger's movie and he crushes as the heart-throb lead. Plus: We've got another Movie Theatre Field Report as J Mo makes the case for a Red Hulk as Joe Biden reading of Captain America: Brave New World because I mean, sure, why the hell not. If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our discussion, 10 Things I Hate About You is currently streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz, and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Top Gun: Maverick, The Social Network, Harriet The Spy, The Rugrats Movie, The Incredible Hulk, We Live In Time, The Wild Robot, The Order, Ripley, Severance, Killers of the Flower Moon, Oppenheimer, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Anyone But You, The Bourne Identity, Orphan: First Kill, Third Rock From The Sun, Clueless, Get Smart's Bruce & Lloyd: Out of Control, and Grease among many more. We'll be back next week to kick off Hackmonth (Gene Hackmarch?), as we salute the late great Gene Hackman with a month-long tribute to one of the best to ever do it, beginning with Hoosiers next week, finishing out with The Royal Tenenbaums as our March canon entry, and making stops along the way including Crimson Tide and The Conversation. Sad to see the old man go, but my god what a career and we can't wait to spend the next month discussing it in depth. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

In this episode, the randomizer goes all the way back to 1999 to pick a teen high school romantic comedy loosely based on one of the more controversial plays by history's most celebrated playwright, William Shakespeare. Now, Shakespeare is of course ubiquitously revered as the greatest writer the English language has ever known, but it's worth asking from time to time, did any of his plays contain motorcycle stunts, ska music, outdoor paintball, high school students inexplicably dressed as cowboys, Seattle's Fremont Troll sculpture, a large penis drawn on the face of the head elf from The Santa Clause, or Larry Miller rattling off hip-hop slang? Tragically, no, they did not. But, luckily for literature lovers the world over, the writers of The House Bunny and the director of the Martin Lawrence vehicle Black Knight eventually came along to correct these grievous oversights on the Bard of Avon's part. Y'all. Welcome to our FIRST movie episode of 2025 (and of Sis Flicks Season 2)! In true 2025 fashion, it is too much and completely overwhelming. Or is it just... whelming? You'll have to decide once you listen to our (abridged, if you can believe it) thoughts and feelings on the iconic teen classic, 10 Things I Hate About You. This episode is an absolute UNIT, per the Sis Flicks usual, but we simply had too many thoughts to edit down further. God forbid women have hobbies and yap with their sisters about feminism. Listen to the end for a goofy little treat! Find us at @sisflickspodcast on Instagram, Threads, Facebook and LETTERBOXD! Join us for another showdown with Ben, Ian and Anthon and a genre rarely dipped into on Back to the Pictures. With only Hitch & The Girl Next Door for company, this time round, the romcom arena gladly receives 10 Things I Hate About You. Yes, the 1999 teen classic straight from the reimagining of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. This episode, BTTP Alumnus, Heath Ledger returns and is lauded upon (as necessary) and timeless Larry Miller is shown the proper respect as well. In fact, this film is chock full of BTTP alumni including JGL & David Krumholtz. The latter, of which, plays the terrifying genius, Michael, to much aplomb. Other questions answered include, has Bianca always been this selfish? And if so, why? How much did it really cost to have Letters for Cleo up the top of the building for that final iconic shot? And most importantly, did Nigel actually come through with the Brie??!

Friend of the Show Patrick Perot (bass player for Rural Route Nine, official house band of Load Bearing Beams) stops by to preach the gospel of his favorite movie, 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). And he's right to! It's a lovely and very funny romantic comedy from back when Hollywood still made those. The chemistry between Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger! The, uh, good efforts given by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Larisa Oleynik! And best of all: Krumholz, Krumholz, Krumholz. A real-life high school teacher, Patrick is also here to school us on how accurate a representation this is of high school. What grade would he give Kat (Julia Stiles) for her sonnet? And how many students has he had to stop from singing a song over the football stadium's loudspeakers? Also, it's a night recording, so Laci's in her cups. That always makes things interesting. The sports crew (Dylan, Zach, Kody and Aaron) discuss Week 2 of the prep football season and lament their terrible grid picks. Kody has thoughts about mustard helmets and Dylan learns about mustard cramps. Zach has more lead pipe locks. The hosts discuss if Napavine's coach is on the hot seat after a loss and whether the Old Brown Jug game is real or imagined and why The Chronicle Cup soccer series can't continue being inexplicable. "But mostly I hate the way I don't hate you. Not even close, not even a little bit, not even at all."195 episodes ago, The Wives Colangelo covered 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU, the movie that inspired the podcast's existence in the first place. Harmony came down HARD on the film and BJ had an existential crisis about it. But that was before Harmony became well-versed in the ways of teen girl movies, so in honor of the show's 200th episode and the 25th anniversary of the film, it's time the movie is given a closer look. Has Harmony's feelings about Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona changed? Can BJ get through the episode without crying?
