Welcome ladies, germs, and people of all genders! Join Taylor & Curtis as we celebrate our birthdays Ahh! Real Films style! That's right, it's the third iteration of our annual birthday tradition, where we gift each other a horror film to watch. This time it is an accidental giallo episode (hehe) and we have a great time not only discussing the films, but the genre. What is Dario Argento's best film and why is it Suspiria? Does Goblin hide film plot points in the soundtracks they create? Who is Solange!?!?!? What film has us going "[M. Night Shyamalan], I wish I knew how to quit you"? Listen and find out! Please connect with us on Twitter: @ahhreelfilms or Instagram: @ahhrealfilms, or drop us a line to let us know how we're doing, or to suggest a future topic or film to discuss: ahhrealfilms@gmail.com. Please remember to rate, review, and subscribe!  You can also now find us both on Letterboxd! Follow us on our horror journey and occasional forays into romcoms (because let's be real).  Taylor: @happydeathtay Curtis: @let5groove2nit3  Films Covered: Tenebrae (1982), What Have You Done to Solange? Saw Teong Hin is an award-winning, Malaysian director, producer and screenwriter for film, TV and theatre and was Louis Vuitton Malaysia's Generation Next (2003), was Tatler's 100 People You Must Know In Asia (2006), received the CHT Essence Art Award (2009), was August Man, Men Of The Year (2017) and was Chinese Film Association Malaysia Leading Film Industry Person (2018). He is best known for his directorial debut of “Puteri Gunung Ledang” (2004) - the first Malaysian submission for the Academy Awards and the first Malaysian film invited to the Venice International Film Festival. And his production company, Real Films, provided production support for Ang Lee's “Lust: Caution”, produced the Sudirman-tribute musical film, “Hoore! Hoore!” (2012) and the Penang Hokkien film “You Mean The World To Me”(2017). *Childhood* Born in Georgetown, Penang in 1962, Teong grew up the youngest son of six siblings. He later obtained a scholarship to study double physics and mathematics at the National University of Singapore; the first of his generation to head to university. However, he never graduated. Teong Hin's parents were incredibly understanding and encouraged him to return as after he was kicked out of NUS, but the shame of what had happened meant that he couldn't do so and moved instead to Kuala Lumpur. *Moving to Kuala Lumpur* Teong Hin started off couch surfing among his friends, before landing a model gig for Shell. We then discussed: * How he ended up as a production assistant to Joe Hasham; * Learned the ropes as a production assistant before rising to become a producer in 3 months; and * Set up his own company and made a name for himself in the TV commercial and music video (e.g. KRU “Fanatik”) world. *Puteri Gunung Ledang* What really allowed Teong Hin to enter the public eye was with his directorial debut of “Puteri Gunung Ledang” in 2004. But it was hardly an easy journey. We discussed: * How boredom pushed Teong Hin to spend the next 2 years trying to break into the film industry as a director - but failed; * How he was on the verge of quitting when a phone call with Tiara Jacqueline changed everything; * Why he changed the direction of the Puteri Gunung Ledang script into that of a love story at 2am; * The pushback he received for being chosen as the director of one of Malaysia's largest film productions to date at the time; * What it was like directing the Puteri Gunung Ledang film; * His experience at the Venice Film Festival (hint: Johnny Depp & Tom Cruise!); * Why the success of Puteri Gunung Ledang backfired on him; and * How Mi Fang (Astro at the time) & a feng shui master changed his fortunes! *You Mean the World To Me (Hai Ki Xin Lor* ) In 2009, Teong Hin began writing a semi-autobiography of his life. A script that was written as a tribute to his now deceased mother. Teong Hin faced a lot of pushback, with many asking why he would be willing to air his dirty laundry. But Teong Hin persevered and we discussed: * Why Hai Ki Xin Lor first debuted as a stage performance during the Georgetown Festival; * The storm that threw everything into chaos on the eve of the performance; * The reception he received from viewers & also family members; * What it was like filming the silver screen version of Hai Ki Xin Lor; * The impact that the film had on moviegoers; * Whether he would've still proceeded to create the film version if his family had been strongly opposed to its production; * Whether Teong Hin found his “voice” with Hai Ki Xin Lor; * Whether he would do anything differently *Other Things We Talked About* * Being the creative director for opening (19 Aug) & closing ceremonies of 2017 Southeast Asian Games * Impact of COVID on his life and career; * The challenges of creating a regional film directing career; * Whether it's important to move to other locations to obtain “better” career opportunities; * Teong Hin's advice for those seeking to break into the industry. Garry, Andrew and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new film Gaza, grace and humour, surfing and compromise, ordinary people and one-dimensional views of complex problems.Trailer Synopsis: It’s hard to imagine anybody living a normal life in the Gaza Strip. Frequently labeled as the world’s largest open-air prison, it makes an appearance on news reports every time a confrontation erupts between Israel and Hamas. From TV sets thousands of miles away, this tiny piece of land has been reduced to an image of violence, chaos and destruction. So what do the people do when they’re not under siege? The Gaza which is seldom seen is ordinary, everyday Gaza, a coastal strip which measures just twenty-five miles by six and which is home to an eclectic mix of almost two million people. Gaza cannot be understood in a purely political context or by analyzing tragic sound bites during conflict. It can only be understood by immersion, by living amongst its people and by recognizing and exploring its rich social diversity and cultural subtleties. The film depicts a people plagued by conflict but not defined by it and as we journey through the physically broken and battered landscape, we let our cast of characters speak for themselves. Through them we gain a nuanced understanding of what life is really like for its citizens and by extension, grow and foster a rare familiarity and affinity with this truly unique place, as we build towards a tender portrait of a beleaguered humanity. For more info about the film head here. About the Directors: Garry Keane Studied film at the London College of Communication and at the Irish National Film School. After graduating in 1992, he worked as a DOP in New York and London, before fi nally settling in Ireland, where he has been a documentary filmmaker for the last 25 years. In that time Garry has directed over 100 hours of TV documentaries for European and American broadcasters in over 20 countries worldwide. In 2011 he set up Real Films and since then Keane’s documentaries have been nominated for 11 Irish Film & Television Academy Awards; of these, his films have won four, including two in the “Best Director TV” category in 2013 and 2018. Andrew McConnell is an award-winning photographer who has been covering world events for over 15 years. His work often focuses on themes of confl ict and displacement and has appeared many of the world’s top publications. Andrew has worked in-depth on issues such as the Syrian refugee crisis, confl ict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the forgotten Sahrawi people of Western Sahara, for which he was awarded 1st place at the World Press Photo awards.Based in Beirut, Andrew has worked throughout the Middle East for the past 8 years. Gaza is his first work as a film maker and follows on from his photographic projects in the besieged territory that began in 2010. Among numerous honours, Andrew has won two 1st place prizes at the World Press Photo Awards, 4 National Press Photographers Association awards, including the prestigious Best of Show, 1st place in the Pictures of the Year International, and 2 Sony World Photography Awards.
