168. Baywatch (with Caleb Hogan) (Summer of Rock)

There were big expectations in 2017 for the Baywatch movie. 21 Jump Street had shown that raunchy, irreverent takes on cheesy '80s and '90s TV shows could earn bofo box office, and with the dual star power of Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, it looked as if Baywatch couldn't miss. But critics hated it and the movie was a flop at the box office, canceling Paramount's big plans for a Baywatch Cinematic Universe. So, what happened? And is the movie really as bad as its reputation? What does this movie think it is? Is it a raunchy R-rated comedy that wants to mock its source material? Or is it a loving tribute to the most-watched series in the world in the 1990s? It's… kind of neither. Does The Rock make any sense in the lead role of Lieutenant Mitch Buchanan, or has he fully entered the “most boring actor in every movie he's in” portion of his career? Why does the movie suddenly start working as a surprisingly functional comedy when The Rock inexplicably disappears from the movie for 25 minutes and Efron takes over as the lead? Join Laci, Matt, and our official Zac Efron correspondent Caleb for a spirited debate about a movie we're actually pretty divided on. Plus a deep dive into the history of Baywatch and an in-depth look at Dwayne Johnson's extended business empire.  The Summer of Rock is our summer 2025 miniseries covering the movie career of Dwayne Johnson through nine movies, presented in chronological order. Starting with his attempt at crossing over from the world of wrestling, The Rock's career got off to a bumpy start before finally taking off in the 2010s. But it wasn't long before the bumps returned, and we'll be telling the story for you all summer long!  Bonus video: Matt takes us through movies (like Baywatch) that explicitly promise a sequel and then never end up getting a sequel: https://youtu.be/2pUm5aHkssE Subscribe to our Patreon, Load Bearing Beams: Collector's Edition for $5 a month to get two extra episodes! https://patreon.com/loadbearingbeams    Time stamps: 00:04:03 — Our personal histories with Baywatch the TV series AND the movie 00:17:55 — History segment, part 1: The creation of Baywatch (the TV series), and its unlikely rise to become the most-watched show in the world 00:30:30 — History segment, part 2: The production of Baywatch (the movie) under director Seth Gordon 00:47:45 — History segment, part 3: An in-depth look at Dwayne Johnson's business empire, insatiable appetite to own the world, potential presidential ambitions, and relationship with Vince McMahon 01:11:20 — Discussing the 2017 Baywatch movie at length 02:41:10 — Final thoughts and star ratings   Sources: “The Drive (and Despair) of The Rock: Dwayne Johnson on His Depression, Decision to Fire Agents and Paul Walker's Death” by Stephen Galloway | Hollywood Reporter (2014) - https://bit.ly/3JdxLgy   “Dwayne Johnson lets his guard down” by Chris Heath | Vanity Fair (2021)  - https://bit.ly/45qy3rI   “How ‘Baywatch' Went From an Early Belly Flop to the Big Screen” by Chris Lee | New York Times (2017) - https://bit.ly/41yxmeP  (reprinted in the Austin American-Statesman: https://bit.ly/45gTDjT) “The Inside Story Behind Baywatch, The TV Phenomena That Owned The '90s” by Brian Boone | Looper (2023) - https://bit.ly/4fyTaNb   “‘Baywatch' Origin Story: How One Lifeguard Turned His Dream Into A Hassle That Paid Hoff” by Michael Schneider | IndieWire (2017) - https://bit.ly/40Y00WM   “How ‘Pirates' & ‘Baywatch' Are Casualties Of Summer Franchise Fatigue At The Domestic B.O.” by Anthony D'Alessandro & Anita Busch | Deadline (2017) - https://bit.ly/412Na9G   “Dwayne Johnson once fired his agents because they didn't agree he could be bigger than Will Smith and George Clooney. Welcome to your Wednesday dose of content! It's giving Baywatch meets Taken... Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson met while filming the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. For Vogue, Raven Smith writes, Why We're So In Love with Pam and Liam; ‘There's an overarching feeling like Pamela Anderson is out of fucks. After years of pursuing a manicured perfection, she finally feels at home in her own skin—and she's got a nice new beau. Life does not end at 58 (duh!), and though Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte are ending their onscreen tale of 50-somethings' love lives, Pam's is apparently only beginning… In these uncertain times, Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson's idyll feels like just what the doctor called for. After decades of sun, sea, and sex tapes, the last showgirl has finally found love.'Neeson is a widower, who lost his beloved wife and fellow actor, Natasha Richardson, in a skiing accident in 2009. Many echo Raven's sentiment, and are happy to see the silver fox find new love in later life, however, a few are left asking, did we forget what Liam Neeson said in 2019?Six years later can we forgive and forget? Is this another showmance? And how do we feel about this new Hollywood couple? Listen to find out! Thanks so much for listening, and for all of your comments and takes on the topic this week. Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), this is a a 21st Century relaunch of the crime spoof franchise which kicked off in 1988 with the original "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" which starred the late, great Leslie Neilsen as Lt. Frank Drebin.  Well the mantle has now been passed to Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson (Schindler's List, Darkman, Taken) who plays his son, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr.  This time around, he has his own crimes to solve kicking off with the murder of the brother of the mysterious Beth Davenport played by Pamela Anderson (The Last Showgirl, Barb Wire, Baywatch).  Furthermore, the prime suspect MIGHT be tech billionaire Richard Cane played by Danny Huston (The Constant Gardener, Wonder Woman, Children of Men).  And hilarity ensues?  Let's find out if this latest reboot can bring the funny as well as the original....  See below for a link to a special video featuring a DELIGHTFUL scene from another movie featuring a needle-drop used within this movie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77m3XlhQwaIHost & Editor: Geoff GershonEditor: Ella GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Donna opens up about her healthy lifestyle, cutting toxic people out of her life, and the fierce competition she experienced among women in Hollywood. Adam shares his perspective on “difficult” vs. “toxic” personalities and parenting his easygoing son versus his strong-willed daughter. Donna suggests that Los Angeles itself breeds toxicity in people, and the two explore how fame and environment shape human behavior. Things take a spicy turn when Donna introduces her new AI chatbot that lets fans have steamy conversations with a virtual version of herself—prompting Adam to give it a wild on-air test run.Journalist and To Catch a Predator host Chris Hansen drops by to discuss his latest sting operation in Florida, where his team apprehended 41 child predators. Adam vents about careless drivers, leading to a larger discussion on rising child exploitation cases and why predators continue to flourish in 2025. Chris explains common patterns among offenders, the legal outcomes following his busts, and his frustrations with lenient laws—especially in states like California. He also highlights how technology and social media have made it even easier for predators to find victims, raising new challenges for law enforcement.Jason “Mayhem” Miller joins Adam and Chris to cover the news, tackling stories like a fan getting arrested for throwing a sex toy onto the court during a WNBA game, an Australian state rolling out machete disposal bins ahead of a new weapon ban, and the backlash over Sydney Sweeney's voter registration amid an American Eagle ad campaign. Tonight, Born to Watch delves deep into the dusty, desolate West Texas badlands to dissect a modern masterpiece: the Coen Brothers' haunting 2007 thriller, No Country for Old Men. It's a film that sidesteps genre conventions, delivering existential dread with a bolt gun and cowboy boots. The full Born to Watch crew is in session, and from the moment Whitey's epic intro begins, you know this episode is going to be as layered and unpredictable as Anton Chigurh himself.Right from the start, the boys are firing, rattling off 2007's Oscar lineup, debating Juno's place in film history, and showering praise on Daniel Day-Lewis' oil-thirsty turn in There Will Be Blood. But tonight belongs to a different kind of monster: Javier Bardem's Anton Chigurh. Is he cinema's most terrifying villain? Whitey thinks he's second only to Darth Vader, and with that hair, maybe even scarier. As the team recalls first viewings and rewatch counts (shoutout to G Man's 15 and counting), the discussion spirals into tales of obsessive fans, including a local surfboard shaper who watched the movie weekly and theorised on every nuanced frame. This isn't just a movie, it's a layered riddle that demands attention, multiple viewings, and, apparently, a decent video store rental policy. Each Born to Watch host brings their own flavour to the conversation. Damo labels it a “one watcher” for its grim tone, while Dan declares it a regular “downtime” favourite on the land, fitting for a film that captures so much dusty silence and moral ambiguity. G Man and Whitey, meanwhile, dig into the deeper layers, noting how every watch reveals something new.The cast gets a well-deserved spotlight, with special attention paid to Javier Bardem's quietly horrifying performance. Gow dives into Bardem's rugby-playing past (yes, really) and his reluctance toward violent roles, ironic, considering Chigurh is basically Death with a pageboy cut. Josh Brolin's understated turn as Llewelyn Moss also gets love, as does Tommy Lee Jones' weary, philosophical sheriff. The gang reflects on Woody Harrelson's all-too-brief but memorable role and Kelly Macdonald's heartbreaking final scene. And in true Born to Watch fashion, the episode isn't just about highbrow film theory; it's a ride. Expect detours into Aussie weather patterns, rogue toasties, and the quality of Diane Lane's 2010s filmography. There are tangents on Baywatch, Peter Phelps' acting career, and even a debate on the New Yorker's most pretentious film review ever written. Trust us, you won't want to miss Whitey translating the nonsense of a critic who thinks name-dropping Elmore Leonard makes a hot take.As always, the team weighs in on whether the film cracks the Rank Bank. But the real joy is in the journey: Gow's taglines, Dan's literary deep dives, and Damo's reluctant respect all add up to a collective conclusion: No Country for Old Men might just be the smartest film to ever feature a cattle gun.So, if you love Oscar-winning nihilism, coin toss-induced dread, or just want to hear a bunch of Aussie legends unravel one of the Coens' most unnerving films, this is the episode for you.JOIN THE CONVERSATION Is No Country for Old Men the Coens' bleakest brilliance or just a beautifully shot nightmare? Would you call it heads or tails… or just run for the hills? Is Anton Chigurh cinema's most chilling villain or just a man with a bad haircut and worse manners?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show!Listen to the full episode now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods.Don't forget to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and click the

Baywatch Berlin ist ein Laberpodcast. Kein Dokument der Zeitgeschichte. Kein popkultureller Diskurs. Keine Chronik unserer Zeit. Tread Perilously returns to the Ballad of John D. Cort with an episode of Baywatch called "Blindside." After a long period away, John D. Cort returns to Baywatch to complete his mandatory ten days and go through his lifeguard recertification. Everyone is thrilled to see him except C.J. They had a thing going before she left Baywatch some years prior. Also, Mitch notices something is off with Cort's peripheral vision. But does Mitch know better than the county optometrist? Meanwhile, Hobie befriends a very tall man working as a sideshow giant on the nearby pier. Will he be able to convince him to change his employment situation? Justin finally meets Second Hobie as "Blindside" takes the Ballad into season 4 of Baywatch. He and Erik try to dissect just how much David Hasselhoff felt uncomfortable around John Allen Nelson. The pair also finally encounter the Baywatch of pop culture memory. The lack of half the cast -- including Alexandra Paul and Nicole Eggert -- does not go unnoticed. Another series for Nelson gets pitched. Nuance leads to a conversation about Pamela Anderson. Geography Corner explains how unlikely it would be for Cort to arrive at the beach on horseback. A county permit becomes surprisingly important in Hobie's story and the modern use of "wild" makes a surprise appearance.

Was ist los? SO! WIE ES IST! und auch wenn „künstliche Intelligenz“ mal kurz Thema ist, wird Baywatch Berlin - immer und für alle Zeit - von menschlicher Dummheit erzählen.
