This week on End Credits, we're still having February thoughts. Although it's March now, we're going to revisit Valentine's Day with the rom-com/horror mash-up Heart Eyes, and because we can't escape the ramifications of what's going on everyday in the White House, we will talk about how Canadian cinephiles can do their part in the trade wars. This Wednesday, March 12, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Candice Lepage will discuss: Trade War Movies. You may have heard that there's a trade war happening. Anger at the U.S. President has extended to all things American, including streaming sites like Netflix and Prime Video, which people are cancelling in frustration. So in that spirit, we will start this week with some trade war programming. We will talk about where you can find some great Canadian movies on some great Canadian streaming sites. REVIEW: Heart Eyes (2025). Two genres that play by their own well-established rules: rom-coms and slashers. Two great tastes that taste great together? That's the question at the heart of Heart Eyes, which essentially asks "What would happen if there's a Hallmark movie and suddenly there was a masked killer farting around?" The makers of Happy Death Day, Werewolves Within, and It's a Wonderful Knife answer that question, but whether or not that answer is satisfying for two well-known horror heads is a bigger question. End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.
This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're howling with laughter and a touch of terror as we explore the world of quirky werewolf movies! We'll be comparing the American film Werewolves Within (2021) and the French film Teddy (2020). Werewolves Within (2021) Directed by Josh Ruben, Werewolves Within is a horror-comedy based on the Ubisoft virtual reality game of the same name. It follows a newly arrived forest ranger who finds himself trapped in a snowbound Vermont town with a group of eccentric residents, all of whom suspect each other of being a werewolf. The film is known for its witty dialogue, ensemble cast, and its blend of humor and suspense. Teddy (2020) Directed by Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma, Teddy is a French horror-comedy-drama that follows a young man named Teddy, who is scratched by a mysterious creature in the woods. As he begins to experience strange physical and behavioral changes, Teddy must confront the possibility that he is turning into a werewolf. The film is known for its grounded approach to the werewolf mythos, its dark humor, and its exploration of themes like adolescence and identity. Join us as we discuss the unique charms and quirks of these two werewolf flicks. Spoilers start around 7:10.
Holly tries to identify who among us may be the Werewolves Within (2021), an adaptation of a VR video game from Heart Eyes director Josh Rubin. The townsfolk of a snowy mountain community are trapped in a resort and come to suspect one of their number hides a savage secret. Listen as we come to grips with satisfying internet videos, discover Sean is an algorithm terrorist, and discover everyone's a suspect on this week's exciting episode! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
This week, help us help you show you the money, as we dive in to the world of sports agents and romance with a 90s rom-com classic starring a man who frankly completes us on this podcast. It's 1996's Jerry Maguire, written and directed by Cameron Crowe and starring Tom Cruise, Renée Zellweger, Cuba Gooding Jr., Kelly Preston, Bonnie Hunt, Jerry O'Connell, Jay Mohr, Todd Louiso and Jonathan Lipnicki. A throwback to an era when Crowe actually made great films (or any films at all), this one's got plenty of charming and funny performances and almost more plot than it's 2h20m runtime even knows what to do with, and we get into the nitty-gritty as to whether Rod Tidwell's NFL free agency arc even makes sense in reality. Plus: J Mo's got another theatrical field report fresh off of a Valentine's trip to see Heart Eyes! If you'd like to watch the movie before listening along to our conversation, Jerry Maguire is currently streaming on Crave, Starz, and free with ads on the CTV app in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed in this episode include Captain America: Brave New World, Happy Death Day (2 U), Freaky, Werewolves Within, Thanksgiving, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Starman, Star Trek Beyond, Down With Love, Bring It On, Yes Man, Liar Liar, My Best Friend's Wedding, Men In Black, Starship Troopers, Say Anything..., Singles, Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, Mission: Impossible III, Elizabethtown, Gran Turismo, Magnolia, Tropic Thunder, Edge of Tomorrow, Anyone But You, and Fargo, among many more. We'll be back next week to wrap up Feb2ary Is For Lovers with our final-Friday-of-the-month canon consideration, as Hayley nominates 10 Things I Hate About You to enter the hallowed halls of the pod-canon this month. That film can currently be found streaming in Canada on Disney+, Crave, Starz and Hollywood Suite. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
In this episode, Steve and Tananarive talk to director Josh Ruben about his new horror comedy (romance) Heart Eyes, which is destined to be a cult Valentine's Day horror hit! They talk about directing, how to make a horror romance, and why Ruben cast Black leads in Heart Eyes (Mason Gooding, opposite Olivia Holt) and Werewolves Within (Sam Richardson, opposite Milana Vayntrub). Also: how he coped after he and his wife lost their new house during the recent fires in Southern California - only weeks before the Heart Eyes premiere. Editors - Brett W. Bachman, ACE and Josh Ethier, ACE Long time friends, but first time co-editors, Brett and Josh are no strangers to working in the horror/thriller genre. The same can't be said for COMPANION director Drew Hancock. Not only was this film Hancock's first feature as a director, but it was also his first real foray into genre filmmaking. But that didn't stop either Brett or Josh from seeing how good this film was going to be right from the script. What they couldn't predict, was how great a working experience the whole thing would be. Written and directed by Drew Hancock, COMPANION stars Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid as a couple on a weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin that unravels into violence amid revelations that one of the guests is what's known as a companion robot. BRETT W. BACHMAN, ACE Brett W. Bachman, ACE, is an editor of film & television with acclaimed titles such as Mandy, Pig, & The Fall of the House of Usher. He has worked with leading voices in genre film, such as Panos Cosmatos, Mike Flanagan, Josh Ruben, and Elijah Wood. Several of his feature films have premiered at renowned international festivals, including Sundance, TIFF, SXSW, and Cannes. He's also brought his talents to the small screen with numerous television and commercial projects. Recent & upcoming titles include: Companion, a thriller from writer/director Drew Hancock and New Line Cinema, Rabbit Trap starring Dev Patel, and Heart Eyes, a romcom-slasher hybrid from director Josh Ruben. Additional titles include Werewolves Within, Color Out of Space, The Toxic Avenger, The Vigil, Cooties, and many more. Bachman found his love of editing in his formative years, developing a passion for storytelling through three self-produced documentaries when he was just 19. At 22 years old, he was one of the youngest members of his AFI Conservatory editing program. Since then, he's nurtured his love of filmmaking with an array of eclectic projects as an Editor, Associate Producer, and Executive Producer JOSH ETHIER, ACE Josh Ethier is a renowned Los Angeles based film editor who has left a lasting mark on the horror, thriller and action genres; he literally wears his passion for the genres on his sleeve. His works have premiered at esteemed film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Tribeca Film Festival, Beyond Fest and Fantastic Fest. Ethier is most well known for his frequent collaborations with director Joe Begos, with whom he has crafted a unique, LOUD and impactful cinematic style. Their partnership has resulted in several acclaimed films, including "Bliss," a psychedelic horror film that explores the descent of an artist into madness; "VFW," a gritty, action-packed thriller about war veterans defending their local VFW post from a drug-addled gang; and most recently, "Christmas Bloody Christmas," a festive yet terrifying holiday horror film that's streaming on Shudder. These collaborations have resonated with audiences and critics alike, showcasing Ethier's ability to enhance Begos' visionary storytelling through his editing. Ethier's impressive filmography includes notable titles such as Oz Perkins' "Gretel & Hansel" for Orion Pictures and MGM, a dark reimagining of the classic fairy tale; William Brent Bell's "Orphan: First Kill," the prequel to the cult horror favorite for Paramount Pictures; Henry Dunham's "The Standoff at Sparrow Creek," a tense, dialogue-driven thriller about a mass shooting at a police funeral; and "Mayhem," a high-octane action horror film starring Steven Yeun that highlights his versatility as an editor of action and comedy. In 2021, Ethier's contributions to film editing were formally recognized when he was invited to join American Cinema Editors (ACE), an honor that signifies his standing in the industry amongst his peers. His career is marked by a commitment to excellence and a passion for storytelling, making him one of the most respected and sought-after editors in independent genre cinema. Ever wonder why werewolves are such a horror staple? On this episode of "The Bricked Pit," we're diving deep into the world of cinematic werewolves, exploring the myths, the movies, and everything in between. We'll trace the werewolf legend back to its roots in ancient Greece (turns out people have been afraid of turning into wolves for a long time!), and talk about how those stories have changed over time. Plus, we'll discuss how 20th-century horror classics like "The Wolf Man" shaped how we see werewolves today. Remember those awesome practical effects in "The Howling" and "An American Werewolf in London?" We'll revisit those iconic transformation scenes and talk about why they're still considered the gold standard . Of course, no discussion of werewolf movies is complete without talking about classic tropes like full moon transformations, the battle between man and beast, and those oh-so-contagious bites. We'll also dig into some of our favorite werewolf movies, including the feminist horror flick "Ginger Snaps" and the hilarious horror-comedy "Werewolves Within." So, grab your silver bullets and join us for a howling good time as we explore the wild world of werewolves on film!
Special guest host Simon joins Reanimated this week, while H.A. is on the road, to discuss Werewolves Within, an adaptation of a video game with a cast and production crew made up of comedy superstars that packs a lot of laughs into its runtime.

Allison Chris and Dan discuss the Ubisoft film Werewolves Within based off the game of the same name! Tune in and see where we think it ranks!
Werewolves Within—which is as loosely based on a video game as possible—is a horror/comedy whodunnit that relies far more on humor than gore. And, for the most part, it works well. Starring Sam Richardson as bumbling park ranger Finn Wheeler, Werewolves Within never takes itself too seriously. Beaverfield, VT, is a small-town full of eclectic stereotypes of modern America. From the uppity gas pipeline executive to the moronic MAGA tandem to the yogi gay couple, it's a place already full of mistrust. The titular werewolf preys on those seeds of doubt; so, as a viewer, it is up to us to solve who is behind the sowing of the chaos. Hilarity mostly ensues. Now, sit back, gnarl an Imperial Amber from Great Lakes Brewing, and stay off of Emerson's porch! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, and Bling Blake are throwing axes and dancing to Ace of Base! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – A whodunnit with teeth! (00:00) Lingering Questions – This movie is a lot of fun. Are we surprised it didn't do better? (42:31) The "Mr. Rogers" Trivia Challenge – Bling Blake challenges the field to trivia about werewolves. (1:01:04) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We kickoff Hops and Bomb Coms with Summer Catch! In this spooky Halloween special, I'm joined by Ethan James @TheHonestCarpenter to discuss our favorite scary movies just in time for Halloween. We explore various horror subgenres, from classic slashers to modern gems, sharing recommendations and insights. Some of the movies discussed: "Happy Death Day" "Totally Killer" "The Blackcoat's Daughter" "Terrifier" and "Terrifier 2" "Saw" (Franchise) VHS Series (Found Footage Anthology) "Halloween Trick 'r Treat" "Evil Dead Rise" "Ginger Snaps" "Prom Night 2: Hello Mary Lou" "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" "Werewolves Within" John Carpenter's Films ("The Fog," "Christine") "Motel Hell" "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies" "Infinity Pool" "Deadstream" Nicolas Cage Films ("Adaptation," "Pig," "Becky," "Wrath of Becky") We share our thoughts on cult favorites like "Terrifier" and the unique anti-hero Jigsaw from the "Saw" franchise. We also delve into the world of found footage horror with the VHS series, emphasizing the artistry and creativity behind these shorts. We also touch on "Evil Dead Rise" and its fresh urban take on the horror classic. Werewolf movies briefly take the spotlight, with "Ginger Snaps" standing out as a memorable example. We continue our discussion by exploring recent horror releases, including "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" and the comedy-horror gem "Werewolves Within." We share insights on the experience of rewatching older films and highlight their enjoyment of John Carpenter's classics like "The Fog" and "Christine." And let's not forget about kitschy horror favorites such as "Motel Hell" and "Auntie Lee's Meat Pies." The episode also delves into marketing strategies, with A24's approach to promoting independent cult films being commended. The effectiveness of movie trailers and the trend of young filmmakers attempting to include everything in their movies are explored. The Lovecraftian genre, Nicolas Cage's diverse roles in horror, and a brief mention of "Deadstream" round out our discussion. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize their belief that a good film should be evaluated not solely on objective elements like acting and budget, but on its ability to tell a compelling story and evoke emotions. We share their appreciation for films that surprise and engage the audience, leaving a lasting impression. Ethan on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheHonestCarpenter

Renfield is a delightful little horror comedy chronicling the titular character's toxic relationship with his master, Count Dracula. Featuring Nicholas Hoult as Renfield and Nicolas Cage as that overbearing boss, it's a film that works despite its own confusion on what it wants to be. Cage is phenomenal as Dracula and Hoult is charming as the nebbish Renfield. Their interplay almost universally hits. The other identity of the film is a smattering of over-the-top action and balletic gore. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed that, too. I just wish there was more of the former. Why? Well, quite simply, Cage is the principal reason to watch Renfield. He is just so damn zany and fun. The fact that he disappears for large sections of the movie as Renfield makes googly eyes at a cop named Rebecca (Awkwafina) hurts the driving narrative of the film. We're here to see Dracula gaslight and manipulate Renfield, so give it to us. Anyway, as I said, this movie is mostly a good time. That sadly did not translate to box office success. On a budget of $65 million, it grossed a putrid $26.7 million. But with decent fan reactions (79% favorability compared to the 58% of critics), Renfield does at least seem destined for semi-cult status. Now, sit back, suck the flavor from Rhinegeist's Franz, and don't make it a sexual thing! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Chumpzilla, and Bling Blake are scouring New Orleans for some nuns or a busload of cheerleaders to feed the Lord of Death's insatiable apetite!
