Today, we're diving into our Top 5 Deliveries or Couriers in film, exploring characters and stories where the act of delivering is pivotal, weaving through plots filled with intrigue, action, and high stakes. After our countdown, we'll review the 2024 thriller The Courier, centered around money laundering in Spain, and delve into the samurai action of Blade of the Immortal.Top 5 Deliveries or Couriers in Film:The Transporter (2002) - Jason Statham stars as Frank Martin, a professional "transporter" known for his strict rules about transporting packages, no questions asked. This film is famed for its high-octane action and the moral dilemmas Martin faces when he breaks his own rule.Premium Rush (2012) - Set against the backdrop of Manhattan, this film features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a bike messenger caught in a deadly chase over a mysterious envelope. The high-speed cycling scenes are a thrill ride, emphasizing the risky side of courier work.Cast Away (2000) - Tom Hanks portrays a FedEx executive whose plane crashes, leaving him stranded on a deserted island. The film contrasts his professional commitment to delivery with his survival struggle, highlighted by his determination to deliver an unopened package.Blade Runner (1982) - Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard delivers justice to rogue replicants in this sci-fi classic. Deckard's role, though not a courier in the traditional sense, is pivotal in delivering societal balance in a dystopian future.John Wick (2014) - This action-packed film pivots around a seemingly mundane delivery—a puppy sent to John Wick, which rekindles his old hitman instincts after a tragic loss, sparking a deadly vendetta. The 2024 film The Courier dives into the dangerous world of money laundering within the picturesque yet deceptive setting of Spain. It follows the intense and risky life of a courier who becomes embroiled in an international scheme far beyond ordinary parcel delivery. The film explores the shadowy intersections of finance, crime, and personal survival, with thrilling sequences that underscore the high stakes of illegal courier activities.Kids Feature: Blade of the Immortal Switching gears, Blade of the Immortal follows a samurai charged with protecting a young girl. His mission to deliver her safely from her enemies embodies the essence of 'delivery' in a broader, more lethal context, offering action and a deep sense of honor amid relentless dangers.Today's episode promises an intriguing exploration of how deliveries, whether mundane or dangerous, shape the narratives and destinies in cinema. Join us as we unpack these delivery-driven adventures, from high-speed chases in Manhattan to the dangerous underbellies of international money laundering.

Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 92 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. brings Adam Barnard of Screen Fever back to the show to discuss writer/director Rian Johnson's 2012 sci-fi thriller Looper. After winning indie cred with Brick and The Brothers Bloom but before he became a target of online vitriol for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Johnson brought a wholly original vision of the future to life. Set in a grimy underworld where time travel has become primarily used by criminals looking to cleanly dispose of their kills, Looper stars Joseph-Gordon Levitt as Joe, a hitman of sorts who runs into his biggest challenge yet when his older self (Bruce Willis) escapes death. Now caught up in race against time, young Joe must apprehend his future self before he realizes a deadly mission with the potential to disrupt the entire timeline. Although Looper was a box office hit, the film has been sorely absent from the mainstream discussion regarding modern sci-fi. Released amid a particularly busy time for Gordon-Levitt (who also appeared in The Dark Knight Rises, Premium Rush and Lincoln that year), the film also helped catapult co-star Emily Blunt to further stardom, paving the way for her roles in genre fare like Edge of Tomorrow and this year's A Quiet Place. So hop in that tin can of a time machine, strap in and let's travel back to 2012 for an in-depth (and super-sized!) discussion of Looper. Eden is away doing [thing] this week, so we have Cody instead. Of course, I proceed to troll Cody by making the podcast awkward. But hey, we discuss stuff too! We spend a good amount of time discussing Ihsahn's disappointing take on the recent happenings in metal and his complicity (including Emperor drummer Faust's actions). Then how lukewarm we are about the new Dimmu Borgir song. Then the new Alkaloid song, which we both love. Then I try to convince Cody to get into Augury (he messaged me after the episode saying it clicked). We comment on the unfortunate passing of the Cave In bassist Caleb Scofield (crowdfunder here). Finally, we talk about the excellent Toilet ov Hell article on reactionaries in metal and how the scene has become such a mess of edgelords. Then, cool people time. We discuss Cody's favorite movies and then some other random ones, like The Godfather, A Scanner Darkly, Synecdoche New York, Adaptation, Stranger Than Fiction, Premium Rush, The Raid, City of Violence, and more.
