Fifteen years ago, director James Marsh delivered one of the most purely entertaining documentaries of the 21st century recounting one man's amazing journey.....between two skyscrapers....on a wire.  This is the story of Phillip Petit, a French high wire artist who alongside several other conspirators planned and executed the death-defying feat of setting up and then walking on top of a wire connected to the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center back in August of 1974.  It's quite a story and he's QUITE the character - let's revisit the film which won Best Documentary Feature at the 2009 Oscars. Host: Geoff Gershon  Editors: Geoff and Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershonhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Director James Marsh (The Theory of Everything) joins Tiller to revisit his Academy-Award winning film “Man on Wire”, a joyous and masterful documentary about high-wire daredevil Philippe Petit's 1974 stunt: performing acrobatics on a thin wire strung between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Their thoughtful discussion touches on sanctifying the Twin Towers in a post 9/11 era (2:25), James's process of courting Philippe (12:14), the film's unlikely success at the Sundance Film Festival (19:00), making documentaries cinematic (24:00), trusting the audience (25:45), crafting unique reconstructions (30:42), the hidden blessings of small budgets (38:00), signing a blood pact for Philippe's film archive (42:09), and finally whether James ever intends to return to nonfiction filmmaking (46:00).

[School of Movies 2022] The Summer Commissions Season continues with an unexpected highlight. Here we have a brace of films focusing on the same real life event: Man on Wire (2008) and The Walk (2015). The former is a documentary about Philippe Petit the man who walked on a wire between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The latter is the Robert Zemekis dramatization of that fairly astonishing heist. We recommend you see one or both of them, because they're fantastic in different ways. The year was 1974, the towers were in the process of being built in Manhattan, and thousands of miles away a French street performer was cultivating a deep longing to traverse the tallest wire in the world. One tiny mistake, one miscalculation and he would plummet to a very public death. But first he had to get up there, and for that he and his cronies were going to need to pull off one of the most extraordinary real life heists of all time.

Man on Wire is a 2008 British-American biographical documentary film directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center. It is based on Petit's book, To Reach the Clouds, released in paperback with the title Man on Wire. The title of the film is taken from the police report that led to the arrest (and later release) of Petit, whose performance had lasted for almost one hour. The film is crafted like a heist film, presenting rare footage of the preparations for the event and still photographs of the walk, alongside re-enactments (with Paul McGill as the young Petit) and present-day interviews with the participants, including Barry Greenhouse, an insurance executive who served as the inside man.[4] Man on Wire competed in the World Cinema Documentary Competition[5] at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize: World Cinema Documentary and the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary.[6] In February 2009, the film won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Philippe Petit had a dream, a passion, a compulsion, to hang a high wire in the most unlikely of places...103 stories above the earth, across the twin giants, the World Trade Towers. Just months after COO's were signed and occupants took residency in the building, a tiny French man with a dream, a knack for showmanship, and impeccable balance, hung his wire, and made history. It was as much history in 1974, as it is today, just as it was in 2008 when this documentary came out. As is the case for many powerful documentaries, just years later, the story was turned into a major motion picture which utilized 3D Imax filmmaking as a helper to tell this amazing story. This documentary is told solely through the mouths of those that were there that faithful day, and the filmmaker stays out of it, as only a great documentarian shall do. I love this film. Ralph talks about his approach for documentaries including his work on The Cove and Man On Wire. He describes what he wanted to achieve musically especially here with Chasing Ice and all its amazing cinematography. We touch on Hurricane Sandy, which devastated his hometown in New York and how Sandy was a sobering wakeup call that echoes the message of the film. Ralph is a self taught composer with no training or classical music knowledge and to hear his approach as a musician who works based off feeling was supremely interesting. It may be #1977 for Dave B. from dvdinfatuation.com on his list of 2,500 movies to watch, but its our #25 episode! Did we finally realize that other people know more than we do? No. We will never admit to that. But we did bring in a big time movie buff to talk all about these two films.  The Walk (2015) Directed By: Robert Zemeckis & Starring: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Charlotte Le Bon, Guillaume Baillargeon is the dramatization of the story of Phillippe Petit, the man who walked on a tight-rope between the two towers of the World Trade Center. Man on Wire is the the Academy Award-winning 2008 documentary of that same feat. We get into all sorts of stuff in this one.  At one point we all admit to the heights getting to us as we watched the movie.  Good thing Dave was there to add some value to this one.   Enjoy and then go check out Dave's website! http://www.dvdinfatuation.com/

With the tragic passing of one of British music's most iconic people earlier this week, our latest episode features a touching tribute to the pioneer that was the Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Jareth the Goblin King or just simply 'David Bowie'. Failed Critics founder and Bowie super-fan, James Diamond, returns for a short emotional farewell to one of the most inspirational figures of this and last century. We even dug up a clip from an episode we recorded back in 2012 when James went to the inaugural Bowiefest in London and have edited into the post-credits of this week's podcast. Episode #11- Calling all Recasts! It's time to relieve your ears from whatever garbage you are currently listening to and trade up to the Earinvasia podcast- because they are doing a recasting podcast! In this plucky parley Rock, Paper and Scissors re-imagine some of their favorite and not so favorite movies. Who else, from any era, could play a believable Batman, Brando or Wells perhaps? Could Gary Busey tag in for an interesting Conan or Terminator. . . how about a Daniel Craig Terminator? Would Marlon Brando or Rob Schneider make a better Superman? Could you recast Star Wars with Jack Nicholson as Yoda and Matthew McConaughey as Chewie? Perhaps one could rework the kilts from Brave Heart into plaid tutus. And maybe Samuel L. Jackson would refine Winston into a more kick-ass Ghostbuster. Surely you can come up with your own ideas, but why not let Rock, Paper and Scissors give you a spring board. Game time- Star Wars Wars This time it's Rock and Scissors in the pressure cooker. Who can name the most Star Wars characters? Only Paper, with his mad memory skills can officiate this kind of battle. Dumpster Dives- Rock, Paper and Scissors think that it's time for you to change up your entertainment, and they are willing to reveal some of the treasures they've uncovered from the dumpster. First, Scissors hurls out a Cartoon Network cartoon, Adventure Time. Scissors finds it difficult to express, in words, the delight this show brings to him. However, the sentiment is understood and you the listener can be assured that this show is a gem. Next, Rock pitches into a double play with a soft spot for NYC. Ex Machina, a comic book series, creates a parallel NYC where the second tower didn't fall on 9/11 thanks to a newbie superhero with political aspirations. Rock follows that up with a documentary, Man On Wire, which follows the ventures of a French tight rope walker who dreams of walking between the World Trade Center towers. Finally, Paper pays tribute to a recently lost podcast, Filmjitsu. The 'podcast that wields film like deadly weapons' was engaging, hilarious and informative. (come back for episode 12 where they powwow about Bond, James Bond.)
