Chores. Just hearing the word can bring up a mix of reactions—from sighs to eye rolls to “we should really work on that in our house.” In today's episode, we're diving into a topic that seems simple on the surface but can be surprisingly challenging to put into practice. We're talking about why chores matter and how everyday responsibilities help prepare our kids for life beyond our homes—while also building important life skills through responsibility and natural consequences. We're joined by Kim Smelley—mom of three, camp mom, and master of what she calls “somewhat organized chaos.” Kim shares how chores have evolved in her family, what's worked (and what hasn't), and practical ways to encourage kids when motivation is low. Whether chores are a strength in your home or a struggle, this conversation will help you see them as an opportunity for growth, teamwork, and meaningful connection with your kids.--Question of the Week: What is your favorite chore to do around the house? Send us a Text Message and suggest a topic or guest! The glow of the microwave clock, an untouched Advent wreath, and a pile of unwrapped gifts—sound familiar? We open with a scene that many parents know too well and move toward a countercultural claim: December isn't a test of endurance, it's a training ground for unity. Through a vulnerable story about trying to do everything alone, we explore the moment a marriage turns from survival to connection and how that pivot reshapes the entire season. We look to Mary and Joseph for a framework that's both spiritual and practical. Their first Advent was anything but curated: confusion, travel, risk, and exhaustion were all there. Yet they walked together—Joseph listening and acting with steady courage, Mary trusting with humble strength. That unity didn't erase hardship; it allowed peace to enter the chaos. Drawing from their example, we invite parents to redefine success: not a perfect tree or matching pajamas, but a home where mom and dad choose each other and make space for Christ in everyday routines. You'll leave with clear, doable practices to anchor your days. Start with one small act of connection: a long morning hug, a short bedtime prayer, or a simple text that says “I'm with you.” Then try the ten-touches challenge to flip the script on phone time and elevate your marriage. These tiny habits soften stress, stabilize the household, and become the living nativity your kids remember—love steady, Christ present, and parents united. If this resonates, subscribe, share it with your spouse, and leave a review to help other families find a gentler, holier way to walk through Advent together.Support the showGive $20 to keep the mic on. In this heartfelt Christmas-season episode of Raising Fatherless Kids, Lori shares the pivotal moment when God whispered, “You are just the mom.” For every mother feeling the pressure to fill the void of an absent dad—through death, divorce, or desertion—this conversation is a reminder that you do not have to do it all. God's presence is enough.Lori is joined by her son Evan, who offers practical wisdom for moms raising sons without a father, with insightful encouragement for every stage of a boy's growth from toddler to young man.Together, they share stories, laughter, and truth about letting go of perfection, resting in God's peace, and trusting Him to father your children in ways you never can.You are just the mom—and that's enough You cannot be both mom and dad. God never asked you to fill that role. He is the Father to the fatherless, and He will fill every gap.Simplify the season Christmas does not have to look perfect. Focus on peace over perfection. Choose simplicity, invite others in, and make room for God's presence.Raise sons with grace and space Let your boys be boys. Give them room to grow, to fall, and to rise again. Affirm them, pray for them, and respect them; your influence matters deeply.Trust God's faithful fatherhood You are called to mother with faith, not fear. Max and Matt dive into the messy middle ground of parenting as a team, when to be a united front, and when it's okay (even good) to be different. Sparked by a spicy Instagram post, they unpack what happens when one parent loosens the rules while the other holds the line, and why those differences might actually teach kids resilience. From solo weekends with the kids, to pizza dinners and Dave & Buster's meltdowns, to the hidden pressures moms and dads face when parenting alone, they bring stories, studies, and plenty of laughs. They also break down research on authoritative vs. authoritarian parenting, how consistency shapes kids' brains, and why the most important thing might just be that your child goes to bed knowing they're loved. THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta Static plays on a car's infotainment system. A mother in a suburban town puts on music for her child as she sets her car on railroad tracks and leaves the child in the car to die. The Ryans are a family of four with a strained relationship. Brent, the father, does not approve of his daughter Carly's new boyfriend Damon. He is also going through a slight mid-life crisis as he has apparently been working on a muscle car[2] in the garage. Carly considers her mother Kendall out of touch, fights with her younger brother Joshua, and is currently upset about canceling plans with her boyfriend because her grandparents are coming to visit. Kendall is trying to find hobbies that occupy her time such as taking fitness classes. She is also anticipating the delivery of her sister's new baby. While Carly is at school, radios and TV screens start transmitting unexplained static. The effect is seen as the Ryans' housekeeper murders her own daughter in front of a terrified Joshua. Meanwhile, a mob of parents rushes to Carly's school to kill their children. When the students see one classmate being stabbed by his mother with her car keys after he scales a fence to reach her, the students scatter – though many die at the hands of their parents. Carly escapes with her friend Riley. They reach Riley's house, where Carly watches television reports of the mass hysteria, implying that the static is compelling parents across the U.S to slaughter their children; Dr. Oz is interviewed, telling people how it compares to savaging in pig populations. Upstairs, Riley's mother strangles her. Carly runs home in terror and finds Damon, whose father earlier tried to kill him with a broken bottle but accidentally cut his own throat. Damon accompanies Carly into the house to get Joshua somewhere safe. Kendall goes to the hospital where her sister Jeannie is giving birth, and static is seen on a delivery room monitor, immediately followed by Jeannie attempting to kill her newborn daughter. Kendall tries to save the baby, escaping the hospital and heading home. Seeing Carly at home with Damon, the hysteria overtakes Brent and he knocks Damon out and attacks Carly. Kendall joins him when she gets home. Carly and Joshua lock themselves in the basement and Kendall uses a Sawzall to get through the door. Brent digs out a case from under his bed but finds his gun is missing. Joshua pulls out Brent's gun and fires through the door, wounding his mother. Kendall and Brent, bonding over their shared filicidal desire, run a hose from their oven's natural gas line to the basement to poison the kids. Carly apparently notices the gas, so she rigs up a trap with matches at the door and hides with Joshua in the ventilation system. Brent cuts the lock off and opens the door, igniting the gas and triggering an explosion that knocks both parents out, just as Damon awakens. Damon helps Carly and Joshua evade their parents, but Kendall awakens and knocks Damon out again. As the parents close in on their kids, the doorbell rings. When Brent opens the door, his own filicidal parents – Mel and Barbara – try to kill him. Everyone chases one another through the house: Joshua evades Brent by trying to hide from his father in the garage; Kendall chases Carly and hits her on the head before her mother-in-law knocks her out.
