Commercial: 06.26.24 CU OF GA FREE CHECKING_REV_FINAL STORY 1: Cherokee County Asks Lawmakers to Consider Sales Tax Referendum Cherokee County commissioners are urging the legislative delegation to propose a Homestead Option Sales Tax (HOST) referendum, aiming for a 1% sales tax to eliminate property taxes for homeowners and fund road improvements. The Board of Commissioners approved a resolution for this, seeking a November 2025 ballot inclusion. The proposed HOST would allocate 75% of proceeds to reduce property taxes and 25% for capital projects, primarily roads. A 10-year sunset clause is suggested, allowing voters to decide on its continuation. The initiative aims to benefit both residents and visitors, with a quick implementation if approved. STORY 2: Etowah Teacher Earns National Career Education Award Lt. Col. (Ret.) Stephen Bergey, a career education teacher at Etowah High School, has been recognized as the Region II New Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Career and Technical Education. This award honors outstanding CTE teachers who demonstrate classroom innovation and dedication. Bergey, with a 20-year military and diplomatic background, has led Etowah's JROTC program to numerous accolades, including the 2024 Distinguished Unit Award. He holds multiple advanced degrees and has been elected president-elect of the Georgia Association of Career and Technical Education. STORY 3: Cherokee Schools Announces REACH Georgia Scholars The Cherokee County School District is celebrating its new class of REACH Georgia Scholars, a program offering mentorship and college scholarships to promising middle and high school students. This year, four eighth-graders—Sara Chance, Farrah Fascitelli, Fernanda Hernandez, and Leila Morris—were selected. The district held a signing day-style reception to honor them, followed by recognition from the school board and Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis. REACH Scholars who meet program requirements can receive up to $10,000 in scholarships for eligible Georgia universities or technical colleges. Back in a moment Break: Drake Realty (Cherokee County) STORY 4: Cherokee County Theater Programs Earn Honors at Regional Contest Cherokee County School District theater programs excelled at regional One Act Play competitions. Etowah High School won the Region 5-6A championship with "Eurydice," while Sequoyah High School won the Region 6-5A championship with "Little Shop of Horrors," also placing third in the 5A state competition. Sequoyah's production will perform at the Georgia Thespian Conference. Both schools received individual honors for acting and technical roles. Cherokee High's Brandon Mears and River Ridge High's Tripp Scurlock earned Best Actor awards in their respective regions, with additional All-Star Cast recognitions for students from both schools. STORY 5: Brooke Ice Tapped as Lead Advisor for Cherokee Fire Explorers Brooke Ice has been appointed as the new lead advisor for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services' Explorer program, succeeding Capt. Michael Sims, who led the program for 17 years. Sims, a former Explorer himself, guided the program to numerous successes, including many first-place trophies at competitions and helping over 50 former Explorers pursue careers in public safety. Ice, also a former Explorer, brings extensive experience and passion to her new role, aiming to maintain high standards while introducing new initiatives. Sims will continue to support the program as Committee Chair, ensuring its continued success. Commercial: 12.14.24 FALANY DEC_FINAL STORY 6: Cherokee Commissioners Approve 85 Townhomes on Bells Ferry The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved a rezoning request for an 85-unit townhome development on 10.66 acres at 6355 Bells Ferry Road. The development, by David Pearson Communities, will feature owner-occupied townhomes with two-car garages, a pool, and a clubhouse. The project includes 2.25 acres of open space for a pedestrian path. Initially proposed at 102 units, the plan was revised to 85 units after density concerns. The development will have a density of 7.97 units per acre, aligning with county standards. Despite some local opposition, the project was seen as a responsible use of the property. STORY 7: Cherokee County School Board Appoints New Chief Academic Officer The Cherokee County school board appointed Joshua Heath as the new chief academic officer on December 12. Heath, who joined the district in July as the executive director for accountability, succeeds the previous officer who retired earlier this year. With 12 years of educational experience, Heath is also a CCSD parent and spouse of a district teacher. During the board's work session, he presented reports on student performance in AP, SAT, and ACT exams, as well as the district's performance on the state's CCRPI. A Haunting in Venice | Hercule Poirot ermittelt ohne Greenscreen Als letztes Jahr "Tod auf dem Nil" mit gehöriger Verspätung in den Kinos erschien, entpuppte sich der zweite Fall von Meisterdetektiv Hercule Poirot schnell als Fail. Trotz beliebter Vorlage und obligatorischem All-Star-Cast, geriet die Agatha-Christie-Verfilmung zur reinsten Greenscreen-Party und war damit für viele fast so grauenvoll wie ein waschechter Mord. Trotzdem bleibt Hauptdarsteller und Regisseur Kenneth Branagh der Figur des belgischen Ermittlers treu und bringt ihn mit "A Haunting in Venice" rund anderthalb Jahre später am 14. September wieder zurück auf die große Leinwand. Unterstützt von einer prominenten, wenn auch nicht mehr ganz so namhaften Besetzung - u. Oscar-Preisträgerin Michelle Yeoh und "Yellowstone"-Biest Kelly Reilly - sowie einem eher unbekannten Christie-Roman vor der gotischen (und echten!) Kulisse von Venedig, bekommt es Poirot nicht nur einmal mehr mit Mord, sondern auch mit Geistern zu tun. Humbug? Wahrscheinlich. Doch wie kommt die Tat zustande und wer hat sie verübt? Monsieur Poirot muss also wieder ermitteln und unser Stu hat ihm dabei zugesehen. Ob das spannend, unterhaltsam oder gar richtig mitreißend war, erzählt er unserem pfälzischen Hobbydetektiv Sven, der zwar keinen Walross-Bart hat, dafür aber mal ein Bart Simpson-Shirt besaß. Robert Rechsteiner, a Cherokee County School Board member and retired professional wrestler known as Rick Steiner, was banned from a Los Angeles convention last weekend after being accused of verbally harassing a transgender woman. Gisele Shaw, a pro wrestler who came out as trans last year, reported on Twitter that Steiner made derogatory statements toward her at WrestleCon, including calling her a "man," "a piece of trash," and "filth." Steiner has not responded to requests for comment. WrestleCon issued an apology to Shaw, and Steiner was prohibited from participating in the remainder of the event. Impact Wrestling, for whom Shaw was representing, issued a statement in support of her. A representative of Cherokee County School District did not respond to a request for comment; the district is on spring break this week. Cherokee High School theater students, under the direction of Jodi Burn, have received multiple honors for their performances in various competitions. Their production of "Charley's Aunt" was awarded first place at the Regional One Act competition, and named runner-up at the State One Act competition, the school's first placement on a state level since the 1980s. Wyatt Darnell received the Best Actor award at both the regional and state competitions, while Lily Richard was honored with the regional All Star Cast award. The two also won first place in the Regional and State literary meets in the category of Dramatic Duo Interpretation. Cherokee High School junior Emmanuel Mwangi also earned awards in Dramatic Interpretation. Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration in Georgia has opened a new headquarters to comply with Georgia House Bill 202. The facility was purchased for $1.5 million by the Board of Commissioners in August 2022 and is located at 193 Lamar Haley Parkway in Canton. The new building meets the requirements of the new law by providing more viewing areas, parking spaces, and storage. It also brings all operations under one roof. The building was previously used by the Cherokee County Division of Family and Children Services. Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration Director Anne Dover expressed gratitude towards the county's property maintenance staff for making the project successful. The BBQ and Brews festival scheduled for April 8 in downtown Ball Ground has been postponed due to weather. The free festival has been rescheduled to May 20, noon to 10 p.m., and will feature area barbecue vendors, live music, craft beer, retail vendors, and a free kids area. The festival organizers made the decision to postpone the event due to the 97% chance of thunderstorms predicted for the original date. The Cherokee Humane Society Thrift Store is set to reopen on April 15th at a new location at 12156 Highway 92 in Woodstock. The store will operate from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and will receive donations and schedule pickups. The humane society's thrift store had to move recently due to construction. The store's general manager, Barbara Holland, said the new location will help the Humane Society "Save, Alter, Adopt, Vet, Vaccinate and Eliminate Euthanasia." A store manager at the Canton O'Reilly Auto Parts store, Josh Graham, was recognized by the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Search and Rescue Team for his support during Yvonne Oliver's time as a K-9 Handler. Oliver presented Graham with a personalized plaque and two challenge coins for his efforts. The recognition highlights the importance of having supportive employers, such as Graham, for volunteers like Oliver, who have full-time jobs and run calls during work hours. Cherokee County Search and Rescue Team is composed of volunteers who are committed to serving the citizens of Cherokee County. Howdy Gang! This is a MYSTERY themed episode of Sprinklez! Today I share some of my favorite mysteries that you can watch/listen to on streaming platforms. My first recommendation is the incredible 2014 film, MAN FROM RENO (Netflix). Set in and around San Francisco this mystery weaves together two seemingly disparate stories into a terrific modern mystery with the classic elements of a traditional film noir thriller. Then I talk about one of the most famous fictional detectives of all time, Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot in the British television series, POIROT. Season 7-13 is now available on Netflix. I let you in on some of particular favorite episodes including; After the Funeral, Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, and Murder in Mesopotamia. You are in for the entertainment recommendation of your life when I talk about the NPR radio show/podcast: THIS AMERICAN LIFE. (ThisAmericanLife.Org) which has consistently given the world one of the most creative and informative shows since its advent in 1995. It has both real life and fictional stories by some of the best journalists and authors of today (David Sedaris, David Rakoff, Sarah Vowell, etc). One of my favorite episodes in the This American Life cannon is the mysterious and true story, THE GHOST OF BOBBY DUNBAR (Ep.#352). It is enthralling suspense story!!! This episode's mysterious Tasty-Treat-Sensation is Smucker's MAGIC SHELL! It's a liquid then it's a solid. I haven't had it since childhood but its chocolatey and mysterious so it's gotta be good!
