Episode #11 We just found out that the Senate has finished drafting its bipartisan gun control law and are being told by both parties they have the 60 votes needed to pass it. While we don't have the bill text yet one thing we can be very sure of is that it contains a red flag modeled after Jerry Nadler's 2019 House bill. What does that entail, and what crucial piece of information about red flag laws have media and politicians completely overlooking that you should know before deciding on the wisdom and efficacy of this proposed bill. On this week's podcast discussion Paul and Wally discuss the Governor's signing of SB 5 the Red Flag Bill. They also note the conflict inherent in her "Enforce it or resign" rhetoric relative to her plans to legalize marijuana.  A recent social media exchange with a left-wing activist group highlights the fact that the left has dominated New Mexico for decades, but they disavow the results of liberal policies. The rising cost of Bernalillo County’s new headquarters shows why voters are and should be skeptical any time government embarks upon big capital construction efforts. The Rail Runner and Spaceport are additional examples.  Some New Mexico tribes are being forced to burn "household items" now that a coal mine has closed cutting off their primary source of home heating. And, in a separate case in the same geographical area Paul and Wally note that Navajo Nation tribal representatives recently voted to shrink a barrier prohibiting oil and gas development around Chaco Canyon. This is contrary to the desires of environmental groups and NM's congressional delegation.  Finally, an environmental group funded "think tank" recently called Enchant Energy's plan to save San Juan Generating Station and use carbon sequestration technology a "boondoggle." Wally and Paul explain why the assertion that Enchant's plan is a "boondoggle" is simply irrelevant.

Senate Bill 2257 appeared in the House Ways and Means committee this week, and was met with much of the same discord it received on the Senate floor. MPB's Desare Frazier talks to Representatives Joey Hood (R-Ackerman) and Robert Johnson (D-Natchez).Segment 2:Gun safety activist are urging Mississippi lawmakers to pass a bill that would temporarily take firearms away from people under certain circumstances. On this week's podcast discussion which is being recorded near the midpoint of what is shaping up to be a very busy 30 day legislative session, Paul and Wally start by discussing the so-called "Red Flag Bill" which has been introduced in the New Mexico Legislature. SB 5  passed its first committee, SenatePublic Affairs. All of the Democrats voted for it (including Liz Stefanics and Jeff Steinborn). All Republicans voted against the bill. Spurred in part by this legislation a rally was held at the Roundhouse against Red Flag bill and in favor of gun rights on Friday. RGF was in attendance. SB 60 and SB 201 by George Munoz would change the requirements of who serves on the PERA board in a good way SB 72 which actually makes the pension changes made it out of Public Affairs Committee (Stefanics and Sedillo-Lopez voting against). You can read the editorial that Paul and Len Gilroy wrote on the issue here.  Paul and Wally further discuss NM’s PERA system which has created a large number of millionaires: https://errorsofenchantment.com/nms-10000-pera-pension-millionaires/ Social Security bills move forward in legislative committees, but as the AlbuquerqueJournal reports, they are “gaining momentum,” but according to Speaker Egolf are "unlikely to happen" because all of the surplus money has been “spoken for” by the various agencies. HJR 1 to tap permanent fund is again moving in the session, but a leading expert from the center/left Brookings Institute throws some cold water on the idea that pre-K is going to work wonders for New Mexico students. HB 173 which would massively increase New Mexico's gas tax moves forward. SB 110 which is a massive giveaway of power to government employee labor unions passes Senate Public Affairs Committee. Is this the unions' a quid pro quo for pension reform? A federal judge has ruled against the Rio Grande Foundation in its suit over donor disclosure in the battle over Santa Fe's soda tax saying that we didn't prove we were harmed. The Foundation has already appealed.

Producer/Host: Amy Browne Studio Engineer: John Greenman Segment 1: Belfast Salmon Aquaculture Proposal Raises Concerns Segment 2: Removing Guns From Mainers Deemed to be a Risk — Mainers Weigh in on “Red Flag” Bill Segment 1: As listeners may be aware, plans are underway for Nordic Aquafarms to build a large land-based aquaculture facility in Belfast. The proposed site is partly owned by the local water district and would need to be rezoned. The benefits of such a project would be a probable decrease in taxes and more jobs in the area, but some local residents also have concerns and believe the approval process is moving too quickly, with a vote on zoning possibly taking place this month. Belfast residents Joanne Moesswilde and Ellie Daniels are with me in the studio this morning to share some of their concerns. (NOTE: We plan to follow up with a full show dedicated to land-based salmon aquaculture in the near future. If you are involved in the issue and would like to possibly be part of that show, please contact Amy Browne at news@weru.org) FMI: These are the links Ellie Daniels mentioned on the show, along with her descriptions of each: www.salmonfarming.org/cms/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/ISFA_LandFarmingreport_web.pdf “This is a comprehensive report from the International Salmon Farmers Association.” www.maine.gov/dep/water/nutrient-criteria/index.html “This is on the ME DEP site, and summarizes the issues associated with excess phosphorous or nitrogen in discharge water.” www.aqauaculturenorthamerica.com “This is a trade site that follows the industry.” Segment 2: A crowd with strong opinions on both sides of the issue testified at a public hearing on LD 1884 “An Act To Create a Community Protection Order To Allow Courts To Prevent High-risk Individuals from Possessing Firearms” in Augusta Tuesday. If passed, this “Red Flag” bill would allow guns to be temporarily taken away from people who are deemed to pose a threat to themselves or others.
