Send us a textThe mountain running world is buzzing as defending champion Dan Kurtz prepares to face an elite field at the upcoming Sunapee Scramble. Fresh off a dedicated altitude training block in Boulder, Colorado, Dan takes us inside his unorthodox preparation—from living in a van and training on the steepest lines of Green Mountain to battling blizzards and mechanical breakdowns on his way to winning the Canyons 25K.Dan doesn't shy away from discussing the pressure he feels to defend his title and earn another spot on the World Mountain Running team. His candid reflections on training alongside mountain running stars Kyle Richardson and Johnny Luna Lima reveal the camaraderie and competitive edge that's sharpened his preparation. The conversation takes an intriguing turn when discussing his budding rivalry with Mason Kopi following their head-to-head battle on Boulder's notorious Sanitas Challenge—a contest that clearly still fuels Dan's competitive fire. With remarkable insight, Dan breaks down his race strategy for Sunapee's demanding two-loop course, analyzing how he'll approach the aggressive early pace from competitors and leverage his technical descending skills. His knowledge of the course—right down to his preference for minimal Asics Asheels on the potentially muddy terrain—showcases the meticulous preparation of an elite athlete who understands exactly what's required to succeed. Whether you're following the elite mountain running scene or simply fascinated by what it takes to compete at the highest level, this raw and revealing pre-race conversation captures both the physical and mental preparation behind championship-level mountain running. Don't miss this glimpse into the mind of one of America's premier mountain runners as he readies himself for one of the season's most anticipated showdowns.ollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with Mattea Kramer, a writer who comprehensively explores weighty ideas about drugs, power and powerlessness, and the voice in your head. She's been published in The Guardian, The Nation, Mother Jones, Guernica, and The Washington Post, and she has appeared on MSNBC and on radio stations across the country. Her first novel, The Untended — the focus of this episode — will be published in May 2025. In The Untended, Casch Abbey is a waitress, single mom, and recreational boxer who falls in love twice: first with a veteran who secretly grows pot on a rich man's land in Vermont's Green Mountains, and then with a painkiller that eases her long-buried pain. After her foot is crushed under the wheel of a station wagon, Casch loses her waitressing gig and goes broke — and the meds for her foot are her only source of relief. But when the drug is recalled due to outcries of widespread addiction, Casch's dependence imperils her already tenuous life, as cravings lead her into her small town's simmering netherworld. Intimate and exhilarating, The Untended will upend your every assumption about who is a hero and who is worthy of love. In this episode host Michael Shields and Mattea Kramer explore the consequential themes present throughout The Unintended having to do with addiction, corporate greed, PTSD, generational trauma, and so much more.Order The Untended now! Brown dives deeply into the healing rivers of the main characters Granny Maggie, her daughter Carrie Ann, and granddaughter Josie May. Sponsored by Moravian Sons Distillery, Doc Chavent, and author Carla Stockton.   Maggie McCoury, a generational healer woman, relies on family traditions, folklore, and beliefs gleaned from a local Cherokee tribe. Her daughter, Carrie Ann, believes her university training holds the answers. As they clash over the use of roots, herbs, and a dash of mountain magic versus the medicine available in the town's apothecary, Josie Mae doesn't know whom to follow. Lead with Love: A Journey of Discovery by Jack Russell Amazon.com Selfsustainingleadership.com Have you always known love?” a dear friend asked Jack as they were driving home on a dark, bitterly cold winter night. It took a mile or so before he responded, “Yes.” He felt the prevalent darkness deep in his being. It was an emotionally turbulent moment in his life. His wife had recently died after a short illness. But he also experienced Love in the deepest moments of his despair bringing rays of light and hope to the darkness. Yes, he could truly say that he had experienced Love's comfort, guidance, healing, and protection in many, many ways throughout his life. His friend continued, “What is this Love that you've known?” Her question was the beginning of a focused journey of exploration and discovery lasting well over a decade. In 1997, Jack created a cutting edge, quantum leadership model for the 21st century—Self-Sustaining Leadership. At its core, it says we are all connected, entangled together in a web-of-life. Leadership is about relationships; how we connect with others and ourselves in ways that contribute to our collective well-being, productivity, health, and peace. It is Love, a universal principle that sustains this connection; that connects us heart-to-heart. But how do we live this connection with ourselves and others in our daily lives? How does Love guide us to know what is the morally right thing to do in different situations? How do we practice loving ourselves so we can love others more deeply? How does fear and love motivate us in everything we do? What does Love have to do with leadership? Jack takes us on a journey of discovery in answering these questions and more. In doing so, he shows us how to lead with Love! As I read Jack's work,” one reader offers, “it feels like he's sharing with me, like we're having a conversation. He speaks to my heart.” This book is about connecting heart-to-heart.About the author Jack is a proven leader, author, executive coach-mentor, organization trainer-instructor, and entrepreneur. He is a leadership visionary who, in 1997, created a cutting-edge Self-Sustaining Leadership model based on the principles of quantum mechanics. It was the fulfillment of a life-long quest to discover a 21st-century model to meet the universal need for holistic, multi-dimensional, skillful, and morally courageous leaders in real-world settings. Describing his work, people comment on Jack's visionary insights along with his integrity, trustworthiness, engagement, deep listening, and selfless heart character traits. He has a diverse coaching, teaching and training background ranging from the U.S. Army to early child care, secondary and higher education to businesses and non-profits. Having lived and served in several countries, he brings a global perspective and a deep respect for diverse cultures to his work. He lives among the Green Mountains of Vermont with his wife, Glenda, who partners with him in the leadership work.

Baylee Rose Drown, is a queer woman farmer, educator and community builder. Baylee believes in good food for all people. For Baylee, this starts with caring for soil and extends into seeking justice in our land and food system. Sliding scale CSA, working with meal centers and acknowledging colonial land theft (our land is the home of Nehantic people) are all part working of towards an equitable food system. Baylee was raised on her families' Holstein dairy farm in Michigan.  She earned a Bachelors of Science from Michigan State Universities' College of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2009. This is where she first discovered land and animal ethics, which inspired her transition from a conventional farmer to a regenerative farmer.Baylee picked up the organic farming bug in Vermont, where she worked at Green Mountain College's diversified farm from 2009-2013.  During Baylee's time at Green Mountain she qualified the farm as Animal Welfare Approval and was active in the greater community by serving as a boardmember for the Stone Valley Food Coop. Baylee earned her Masters of Science in Sustainable Food Systems from Green Mountain College in 2014, as she was incorporating Upper Pond Farm as an LLC and turning the soil in Old Lyme for the first time.  Baylee is a life long learner. Recently she completed courses on Uprooting Racism in the Food System, Holistic Management, Soil Health and Climate Change and Compost Facility Management. Baylee enjoys mentoring and teaching all ages from mutual aid for fellow farmers, to apprentices, WWOOFers and LymeConsolidated Elementary Students. Baylee presents on the subjects of grant writing, composting, chemical free pest management and integrating animal and plant food production systems. Baylee uses her small cattle herd to manage and improve grasslands and soils. Cows can save the planet - ask Baylee how! Baylee loves bringing people together through farmers' markets hosted at the Long Table, and volunteering withConnecticut Farmland Trust and the Connecticut Compost Alliance.Baylee loves feeding people and being really tired and dirty at the end of a workday. The improbable destinies of two Soviet female spies, connected by a modernist building in North London, is an intriguing premise for any spy novel, let alone one that introduces elements of architectural design in its story. But when those destinies reflect a larger literary opus and sources of inspiration, as they do for today's guest, then the conversation expands significantly. My guest today is Maryam Diener, an Iranian-born author, publisher and poet, whose work has been translated into French, German and English. Her picks are absolutely stellar, and I'm happy to admit that I've actually gone out and bought a couple of them to add to my shelves since this interview took place. Our conversation today took place in person, in Maryam's West-London home, which was a real treat. It's always so enriching to speak with people in their ‘natural habitat', as it were. Today's chat was a very special one for me – stay tuned to find out why. Maryam Diener's four books were: Green Mountain, White Cloud: A Novel of Love in the Ming Dynasty, François Cheng (2004) Another Birth (Tavallodi Digar), Forough Farrokhzad (1963) In praise of the shadows, Junichiro Tanizaki (1933, translated into English in 1977) Marie-Antoinette; The Portrait of an Average Woman, Stefan Zweig (1932) Lit with Charles loves reviews. There are certain joys, certain constants when it comes to the world of beer. And one of those has to be the pleasure when scanning the bar for a pint and you happen across the pump clip for Jaipur on cask. It's a seminal beer that has stood the test of time and this year the brewery responsible, Thornbridge, based in the Derbyshire Dales, celebrates the 20th anniversary of both that beer and the business, too.The Thornbridge story began back in 2005 when founders Jim Harrison and Simon Webster recruited two young brewers to brew on a second hand 10-barrel kit in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall.A journey that began in the small Stonemasons Workshop at Thornbridge Hall is one that has gone on to grow into the Riverside Brewery in Bakewell where the team produce some nine million pints of beer each year.Like any good business, the brewery has moved with the times. While Jaipur remains the flagship, its gluten-free Helles Lukas and Green Mountain, a 4.3% Hazy Session IPA, also account for a significant amount of the brewery's production. Thanks to a brewing team led by Ben Wood, Dominic Driscoll and Rob Lovatt, they create beers that cater for a wide and diverse audience. So as the celebrated brewery embarks on a year that will toast two decades in business, we caught up with co-founder Simon Webster to discuss the Thornbridge journey. We look at the recent fantastic new addition of a Burton Union set, why collaborations continue to play a key part in the brewery's proposition and, with new pub openings on the horizon, why Simon believes that such environments remain the best choice when it comes to enjoying a beer. Phantom Electric Ghost With Teri M Brown: Author of Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, An Enemy Like Me On being an author Born in Athens, Greece as an Air Force brat, Teri M Brown came into this world with an imagination full of stories to tell. She now calls the North Carolina coast home, and the peaceful nature of the sea has been a great source of inspiration for her creativity. Not letting 2020 get the best of her, Teri chose to go on an adventure that changed her outlook on life. She and her husband, Bruce, rode a tandem bicycle across the United States from Astoria, Oregon to Washington DC, successfully raising money for Toys for Tots. She learned she is stronger than she realized and capable of anything she sets her mind to. Teri graduated from UNC Greensboro with a multitude of degrees – majors in Elementary Education and Psychology and minors in Math and Sociology – she just couldn't settle on one thing! While homeschooling her four children, she began her writing career by focusing on small businesses, writing articles, blog posts, and website content. During this time, Teri published five nonfiction self-help books dealing with real estate and finance, receiving "First Runner Up" in the Eric Hoffman Book Awards for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, finalist in the USA Best Books Awards for How To Open and Operate a Financially Successful Redesign, Redecorate, and Real Estate Staging Business and for 301 Simple Things You Can Do To Sell Your Home Now, and Honorable Mention in Foreword Magazine's Book of the Year Award for Private Mortgage Investing. In 2017, after finally getting out of an emotionally abusive 14-year marriage, Teri began dabbling in fiction, a lifelong dream. Upon winning the First Annual Anita Bloom Ornoff Award for Inspirational Short Story for a piece about her grandfather, she began writing in earnest, and published her debut novel in 2022, Sunflowers Beneath the Snow, a historical fiction set in Ukraine. Her second novel published in 2023, An Enemy Like Me, takes place during WWII. Her latest novel, Daughters of Green Mountain Gap, a generational story about Appalachian healers came out in January 2024. In June 2024, her short story, The Youngest Lighthouse Keeper, came out in the anthology Feisty Deeds: Historical Fictions of Daring Women. Her latest book, 10 Little Rules for a Double-Butted Adventure, is an inspirational look at the life lessons she learned riding across the United States on a tandem bicycle and will be published in February 2025. Teri is a wife, mother, grandmother, and author who loves word games, reading, bumming on the beach, taking photos, singing in the shower, hunting for bargains, ballroom dancing, playing bridge, and mentoring others – especially youth and women who are having trouble discovering their worth. In this episode of The Halloween Podcast, we're diving into the haunted tales of Vermont, the Green Mountain State. Known for its scenic beauty and historic towns, Vermont has its share of chilling legends and paranormal encounters. Lyle takes listeners on a journey through some of Vermont's spookiest locations, from eerie inns to ghostly bridges, where the spirits of the past refuse to rest. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, you'll find something hauntingly fascinating in these tales from Vermont's haunted history. Featured Locations: Wilson Castle 2970 W Proctor Rd, Proctor, VT 05765 This European-inspired mansion was built in the 1880s and is known for its resident spirit—an elderly man in a gray suit, often seen lingering in the upper floors. Visitors experience cold spots, ghostly whispers, and the eerie sensation of being watched, making it a popular spot for ghost hunters. Emily's Bridge (Gold Brook Bridge) Covered Bridge Rd, Stowe, VT 05672 Known as one of Vermont's most haunted locations, this bridge is tied to the tragic legend of Emily, whose spirit allegedly scratches cars and leaves deep impressions on visitors brave enough to cross it after dark. Brattleboro Retreat Tower 1 Anna Marsh Ln, Brattleboro, VT 05301 This tower, built by patients in the late 1800s, is a somber reminder of the hospital's dark history. Apparitions of people standing at the edge of the tower are often seen, vanishing before they touch the ground, leaving witnesses with a feeling of unease. The Equinox Golf Resort & Spa 3567 Main St, Manchester, VT 05254 This luxurious resort is said to be haunted by the ghost of Mary Todd Lincoln. Guests report cold drafts, flickering lights, and the spirit of Mary wandering the halls. Some have even encountered the ghostly presence of her son, Willie. Shelburne Museum (Dutton House) 6000 Shelburne Rd, Shelburne, VT 05482 The Dutton House, originally built in 1782, is now located at the Shelburne Museum and is known for its ghostly residents. Visitors report seeing an apparition in colonial attire and hearing children crying from the upstairs rooms. The Norwich Inn 325 Main St, Norwich, VT 05055 This inn, dating back to 1797, is haunted by Mary, the innkeeper's wife, who tragically passed in a fire. Guests and staff report hearing her footsteps, phantom voices, and feeling sudden chills throughout the tavern and hallways. Barre Opera House 6 N Main St #5, Barre, VT 05641 This theater, built in 1899, hosts the spirit of a man in a top hat, often spotted in the balcony seats. Cold spots, whispers, and phantom applause add to the eerie experience for guests attending performances. University of Vermont 105 S Prospect St, Burlington, VT 05405 With its long history, the University of Vermont has several ghostly legends. Stories include sightings of a shadowy figure in the anatomy labs and the spirit of a nurse seen wandering the halls of the old hospital on campus. Green Mountain Inn 18 Main St, Stowe, VT 05672 The spirit of Boots Berry, a former employee who became a local hero, haunts this inn. Visitors hear the sound of boots stomping on the roof during storms, as if reliving his last heroic act. Weston Playhouse 703 Main St, Weston, VT 05161 As Vermont's oldest professional theater, the Weston Playhouse is home to a ghostly actor who appears backstage and is often seen before big performances. Staff and actors frequently hear phantom applause and footsteps in the empty theater. Like Our Facebook page for more Halloween fun: www.Facebook.com/TheHalloweenPodcast ORDER PODCAST MERCH! Small (and maybe the wrong waterfall) waterfall ambience — Okay, so this is my first waterfall, and I'm not psyched about misnaming my first waterfall ambience. But here's the deal. My buddy, Ed, was like, “Yo, you have to check out Moss Glen Falls. They make Warren Falls look like some ****.” So I consulted Google and was served this. “Yeah, that does makes Warren Falls look like some ****.” So I brought my microphone up to Vermont and drove to the falls. And… the bridge was out. The footbridge had been damaged by weather and had some “keep out” -ish signage.  I was bummed but undeterred. I could see the falls back in the woods (from this vantage point, looking to the right of the bridge). These falls looked less impressive (see episode cover image) than the pictures the internet had fed me — yet, I've online dated before, and I know the drill between Glamour Shots and reality. And it may have been a dry summer in the Green Mountains.  I noticed a collection of rocks that could lead me to the other side of the ditch so I could skip the battered bridge. My mind easily picked out the route across boulders, and I stepped one, two, and into the creek I went.  My kid laughed.  And it was worth it to capture my first waterfall. I climbed out of the creek with one sloshing leg limping the rest of the way. I set up the mic and let it roll. Later, I realized I had found some bastard Charlie Brown's Christmas tree waterfall. I should have turned left at the bridge; if I had, I would have wound up here. So… enjoy whatever these falls are called. ___________ Oh, and we're on youtube now! Come check us out.

Corinne Prevot of Skida and Sam Hooper of Vermont Glove on the trials and tribulations of making it in Vermont

When Corinne Prevot was attending high school and ski racing at Burke Mountain Academy in 2008, her colorful hand-sewn hats were an instant hit with her friends and fellow racers. As she moved on to attend Middlebury College, where she raced on the ski team, her stretchy form-fitting hats continued to be a hot item both around campus and on the ski racing circuit, where she sold them from a shoebox. With lots of enthusiasm but little business acumen, Prevot turned her side hustle into the clothing brand Skida (Swedish for “skiing”). Her signature hats and neck gaiters can now be found everywhere from New York City to California to the Green Mountains. A Skida neck gaiter was recently featured in a New York Times Wirecutter column about the best sun-protective clothing.Prevot, 32, now has more than two dozen employees, mostly young women. Skida has expanded to make pants, running wear, and even mittens. The business is headquartered in Burlington but much of the clothing is sewn by women working from their homes all around the Northeast Kingdom and beyond.Just down the road in Randolph is another young entrepreneur who is innovating with a traditional brand. Sam Hooper is the 30-year old owner and president of Vermont Glove in Randolph, the century-old business that he bought in 2018. Vermont Glove is one of the last glove companies left in the U.S. It makes high quality hand-stitched goat leather gloves. The gloves are considered the gold standard among utility lineman who use them to handle powerlines. The company also makes popular gloves for gardeners, skiers, and others.Prevot said that the key to Skida's success is that the brand conveys a “sense of joy and self-expression. And I think that that's kind of what propelled us forward year after year, especially as our market becomes more crowded.”Skida also distinguishes itself by its public stance in support of abortion rights, including donating to national abortion access funds and the campaign for Vermont's Reproductive Liberty Amendment, which passed in 2022 with 77 percent of voters in support.Prevot said that her business is “value aligned. And I think just when we look at the makeup of our team and our organization and our culture, women's rights is a really important thing for us to stand behind.” More recently, Skida raised money for Vermont flood victims.Vermont Glove is also mission driven. When the Covid pandemic hit, Hooper transformed his manufacturing facility to make masks and personal protective gear, which were distributed free to towns and hospitals around Vermont.“There was a need, and we had a skill to meet it, so we wanted to step up and do our part,” said Hooper, adding that his goal was also “to keep people employed.” At one point, Vermont Glove's mask making operation was threatened by a shortage of elastic for ear loops. Skida “saved the day” by providing the elastic. Hooper and Provot have lately collaborated on a line of Skida mittens that are made by Vermont Glove.Vermont's labor and housing shortages have impacted both businesses. For Vermont Glove to grow, new employees needed housing, which is in short supply in Vermont. So Hooper recently bought a former inn and converted it into 10 units of affordable housing for his employees and the community. “It's given us the ability to hire new employees and it creates a stepping stone for current and future employees,” he explained. What does success look like for these young entrepreneurs?“Sustainable growth where we can still have a significant impact on our local community through meaningful job creation, and continued product quality (compared) to what is out there,” said Hooper. For Prevot, “Success would be for the Skida brand to be cherished and loved and that people continue to find joy in our products, and that it keeps them warm in the winter -- and that we still have winter.”

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Justin Simoni aka the Long Ranger. In addition to established routes like the Tour Divide and Nolan's 14, Justin also creates his own - he's traversed the Sangre de Cristo Range, Mosquito and Tenmile Ranges, and from Milner to Berthoud Pass along the divide. And while summiting all of Colorado's 14,000 ft peaks is an effort in itself, Justin summited the top 100 highest mountains in the state after biking to them from his home in Boulder. We talk about all of the nitty gritty details of taking on these ridgeline routes, why he lives car-free, a detailed measurement of how much weight and water he lost over the course of a grueling day hike, some of his current favorite gear, and more. We wrap the show with an overview of some of the best loop hikes in the United States, what we would telepathically say to all 8 billion people on earth, and the triple crown of things on our bedside table.
