Governor Polis wants to build a bridge — a long winding walkway that will stretch from the steps of the State Capitol, over four lanes of traffic on Lincoln Street, and all the way to Lincoln Veterans Memorial Park. And he wants it built before Colorado's 150th birthday next summer. But how much will it cost? Who will pay for it? Will it match the classic architecture and City Beautiful Movement-era park design? And does anyone else besides the governor want this walkway in the first place? 9News' Kyle Clark tried to answer these questions and he joins host Bree Davies to share what he found — and how he feels about the governor's plans for a legacy project. For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm.Follow us on Instagram: @citycastdenverChat with other listeners on reddit: r/CityCastDenverSupport City Cast Denver by becoming a member: membership.citycast.fmWhat do you think? The Federal Theatre joins Denver's list of vintage movie palaces turned music venue after the folks behind The Oriental Theater recently announced they were taking over the space. Could this be a new catalyst for more business along this Northside strip? Then, after President Trump complained that his portrait at the state capitol was “truly the worst”, it was removed — but legislators and History Colorado are trying to decide if the paintings should be replaced by something different altogether. Host Bree Davies is joined by Westword editor in chief Patty Calhoun to dig into these stories, plus producer Olivia Jewell Love pops by to share listener comments on everything from flock cameras to witchcraft. Bree talked about the Federal Theatre's fundraiser to get the old venue running again and our episode with conservative talk radio host Jeff Hunt. After our show with Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas, listener Fiona had questions about other police departments having access to Denver's flock camera data. Why Is Governor Polis Sharing Information With ICE?

A senior state employee filed a lawsuit last week alleging that Governor Jared Polis has violated state law by cooperating with a subpoena for information from ICE. Anti-ICE protesters have been marching in Denver's streets all week and Polis was already in hot water with Democrats after he set his personal record for vetoing bills, so why would he do this now? David Seligman is a candidate for state attorney general and the executive director of Towards Justice, a non-profit law firm that just joined the lawsuit against Polis, and he's on with host Bree Davies to break down the case and try to imagine what the governor is thinking. After we recorded this conversation, we heard back from Governor Polis's spokesperson. She send us the following statement:  “The Governor is committed to preventing the illegal exploitation and trafficking of children. This lawsuit is unfortunately delaying an investigation focused on looking into child exploitation and trafficking. The decision to respond to this federal subpoena to support the investigation into crimes against vulnerable minors was carefully considered in accordance with Colorado law, which allows for sharing information to support timely criminal investigations. Keeping kids safe is a top priority, child exploitation is a deeply concerning issue, and has no place in our state. Complying with this federal subpoena meets the requirements laid out in state law and providing this information is in service of investigating and preventing  criminal activity, which Governor Polis is deeply committed to.”  What do you think about this lawsuit? Or about the anti-ICE protests playing out in Denver right now? We want to hear from you! Then, in a new segment, Governor Polis vetoes more bills -- we talk about all the bills Governor Polis is vetoing, and some of them may surprise you. And finally we take a peek at the 2026 candidate roster to see how primary elections that are now only a whole year away are shaping up. But first, he's the legendary liberal columnist for the Colorado Sun...Mike Littwin joins us to talk Trump, Colorado Media, the state of US Journalism, and what gives him hope.

Then, what is that loud whistling sound we hear, now that the Federal Aviation Administration has been gutted, there's  really no way to tell if it's a plane falling out of the sky or not, great! Then, as expected, Governor Polis vetoed a key labor bill that we both support, why did he do that? And finally, Donald Trump gets a $400 million jet from a foreign nation, you get five pencils and no more than two dolls for Christmas! But first, are state legislatures, city councils, county commissions, school boards, fire boards, water boards, zoning and planning commissions, Congress and all of the other elected policymaking bodies representative enough of the will of the people...or do we need to look at a European-style Citizen Assembly to get to the bottom of what the people really want? Fort Collins Mayor Jeni Arndt and Rahmin Sarabi of the American Public Trust join us to talk about the recent experience in hyperlocal democracy that just happened in Fort Collins.

GREEN ENERGY IS EXPENSIVE AND UNRELIABLE ENERGY And Amy Oliver Cooke writes about it here for Complete Colorado. This is my favorite part:Environmentalists appealed to consumers by saying wind and solar would save ratepayers money. From the outset, Governor Polis refused to provide a detailed cost analysis of his plan while rejecting Independence Institute's 2017 projection that the transition could cost $45 billion. Polis insisted the Institute's estimates were inflated and modeled a plan that wasn't even his. Yet, Polis never offered an alternative figure, saying, instead, he knows it will be less.Fast forward to 2024. The Colorado Energy Office's (CEO) Ascend Analytics report offered an acknowledgment and a sobering warning: Polis's wind, solar, and battery-only system would require 69,000 megawatts of new capacity by 2040 and still “barely meet reliability targets.” At $61 billion, it's also the most expensive scenario studied. That figure doesn't even include the billions of dollars needed for transmission costs. The total system cost will be far greater.Once again, the Institute did the math. The total system cost for Polis' plan, including storage, necessary overbuild, backup, property taxes, and utility profits, new wind and solar costs $280–$319 per megawatt-hour, compared to $32 for existing coal and $40 for gas. Wind and solar costs aren't just expensive—they're economically destabilizing.Amy is on the show to discuss at 1pm, but you really should watch her great show with Jake Fogelman called Power Gab here.

Rundown -    Kyle Clark - 20:40   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:27:50   "Don't Give Me No Vape" by Dave Gunders - 01:43:03   9News Anchor Kyle Clark returns for the first time since Episode 100. We discuss his recent windy interview with US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and his tough helicopter story that made Governor Polis squirm. An objective reporter, Clark's long been the news leader at Colorado's News Leader.   A native of a small town in Western New York, Kyle Clark worked AM radio at age 15 and loved his responsibilities filling in the open spots as play-by-play man John Sterling put his flourish to announcing on the New York Yankee Network. We learn though that his favorite sport is the NFL and the Buffalo Bills of his youth.   For the first time on air, Kyle Clark reveals his youthful obsession with Buffalo Bills legend Orenthal James Simpson, who played under head coach Lou Saban (legendary Juice and Electric Company). Did Kyle follow the trial? Did he ever? Listen as Kyle Clark describes his sports passions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6TacThTV9c   The differences between CA v Simpson and NY v Trump are analyzed. There are different forms of media coverage. What worked for 9News during OJ would not work today. We discuss Kyle Clark's experience covering a big northern Colorado murder case from start to finish. The American criminal justice system is the greatest show on earth.   Nothing about the Trump hush money election interference trial has obvious ties to Colorado, but Trump's other Big Lie litigations sure do. Kyle Clark has studied and presented facts and figures showing how big parts of Trump's Big Lie and Insurrection flowed out of Colorado.   Mass shootings have happened all too often in the great state of Colorado beginning 25 years ago at Columbine. Kyle Clark tells us he was a high school sophomore like Danny Mauser when he was executed. Now, Danny's dad and other parents of murdered children are being attacked on social media by pols.   Kyle Clark pushes back against those lowlifes who would disparage legislators Tom Sullivan and Rhonda Fields. It used to be we all felt fury when Alex Jones made lies for profit in the wake of Sandy Hook. Now, MTG and groups like RMGO belittle parents of murdered children. https://www.9news.com/video/news/local/next/next-with-kyle-clark/commentary-theres-a-sickening-rise-in-indecency-toward-families-of-mass-shooting-victims-and-survivors/73-fbf74ee8-3ac4-4d49-aa31-1c410ac7e2b4   Colorado's CD4 gets discussed and the prospects of Lauren Boebert making her successful move east in Colorado. Regret was expressed that no invitation went out for a 9News debate between Boebert and Frisch in 2022. How's that for introspection? Memorable encounters with Boebert placeholder, Greg Lopez, get reviewed, as do the chances of Dem Trisha Calvarese.   Kyle Clark gives his take on Denver pro sports ownership. Carpetbagging worries abound around the leaderless Broncos. The Monforts may never sell the Rockies; content to make money through visits by fans of opposition teams. As for the Nuggets and Avs, passionately decried is our inability to watch them on our regular TV simply.   We discuss Kyle's amazing Word of Thanks, which has raised over 12 million dollars. It's easy and makes you feel good when you become a recurrent weekly giver. People trust Kyle Clark's judgment and hundreds of non-profits have benefited. https://www.9news.com/thanks   We are thankful for a great conversation with Troubadour Dave Gunders about the Nuggets-Lakers series, how NY vs. Trump may shake out, the impact of a Judge who runs a tight courtroom and it's all happening on Passover. This year's Seder may have different prayers based on NY, Israel and world events. Gunders gives us his 4/20 song, "Don't Give Me No Vape." https://soundcloud.com/dave-gunders/dont-give-me-no-vape

OJ was a mighty USC and NFL running back, like a fast train, but he was an evil man. This week's song from Troubadour Dave Gunders is "Train Keeps Coming." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6_03dUueF0   Justice keeps coming for Donald Trump. The NY v Trump felony criminal trial is upcoming on April 15 in New York City and pressure is building worldwide. Dave Gunders and the host discuss OJ's death and the modern lessons applicable to Trump's litigation. The ban on abortions in Arizona is reviewed and the political consequences are considered.   The show begins by condemning Trump's recent comments that Jewish voters need to "get their heads examined" if they vote for Biden. This is divisive and should be condemned. Given the former president's erratic and divisive recent comments, champions of Trump's return to the presidency should reconsider.   Dagny Van Der Jagt will vote for Donald Trump as a proud Republican. She's a mother of four, a native of Europe and an accomplished attorney with her private practice with her husband Grant Van Der Jagt. Learn about their private practice business in Larkspur. https://vdjlaw.com/   Now, Dagny Van Der Jagt is a candidate for the 23rd Judicial District District Attorney position. The host delves into Van Der Jagt's background, qualifications and platform, particularly focusing on her stance on criminal justice reform. Her other campaign promises and policy proposals, including victim advocacy and community engagement are also discussed. https://www.votefordagny.com/   GOP candidate Dagny Van Der Jagt raises substantial concerns about her Republican primary opponent George Brauchler's integrity and qualifications. Van Der Jagt claims Brauchler, the former 18th Judicial DA, cannot be trusted. She cites political flip-flops, especially on Colorado's Red Flag Law. She claims that Brauchler prioritizes personal publicity over justice and saving dollars for his constituents.   She also raises how Brauchler has historically blurred lines as an attorney, GOP party official, DA, military officer, non-profit fellow, professor, ad man, radio talk host, candidate for innumerable Colorado political jobs and Gazette columnist. Van der Jagt is concerned that Brauchler's military position could create conflicts if there were questionable orders from Governor Polis or President Biden.   Douglas County DA candidate Dagny Van Der Jagt accuses Brauchler of grandstanding, overspending and trying to please everyone while pleasing almost no one. Van Der Jagt claims she has solid Republican Party support, given Brauchler's decision to petition rather than go through the party assembly. https://tracer.sos.colorado.gov/PublicSite/SearchPages/CandidateDetail.aspx?Type=CA&SeqID=59971   A video shows Brauchler being booed and made to leave without finishing his speech, at the controversial Douglas County GOP Executive Committee meeting headed by Douglas County GOP Chairman Steve Peck. Witness for yourself. Watch and listen to how Chairman Peck adds up the vote! https://fb.watch/rpIAvs4Fd3/   The Douglas County GOP may issue a statement similar to the Colorado GOP's rebuke of Deborah Flora for not going through the county assembly. Van Der Jagt believes her commitment to going through the Republican Party assembly makes her the better choice for 23rd Judicial District DA. She wants full GOP support. Just like Boebert received from Colorado GOP in CD4.

Episode 160 - Dick Wadhams

Rundown -    Dick Wadhams - 12:06   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:56:18   "All That Water" by Dave Gunders - 02:01:40   The most accomplished Colorado Republican strategist in modern times is Dick Wadhams and he comes clean about everything right here. Born and raised on a farm in Las Animas, CO, he's been a lifelong Republican. As CO GOP party chair, he won elections, and gained funding from Phil Anschutz among many others.   But now, this former GOP state Chair Wadhams feels shut out as MAGA moves in. Great Republicans of Colorado's past are discussed, as is their silence now in wake of MAGA threat to the Republican Party and to America. Wadhams is the rare Republican willing to stand up on air to this MAGA menace.   Wadhams was a powerhouse behind the throne for Governor Bill Owens, Senator Wayne Allard, Senator Bill Armstrong, Senator John Thune (who toppled Tom Daschle and may become GOP's Senate Leader), Senator George Allen, Senator Conrad Burns and others.   Find out how it all started for this Colorado boy. Analyzed is almost every major politician in Colorado including Senators Hickenlooper, Bennet, and Governor Polis. Dems and GOP once got along. Those days are gone and the reasons why are explored.   Changing faces of the media, especially here in Colorado, are reviewed. Special shout outs go to Shaun Boyd and Anne Trujillo from Dick Wadhams who works for Channel Four as their GOP political analyst. We also discuss radio and the decline that has accompanied the rise of MAGA.   Dick Wadhams is a columnist for the Gazette and a certified news junkie. He shows his class as he decries the broadcasters who talk about a “Biden Crime Family.” Wadhams is not OK with name calling, disinformation, and propaganda. He likes to win based on policy.   We discuss the GOP presidential field and sudden courage of star witness Mike Pence. We also discuss Ron DeSantis and whether there were benefits to slavery. Spoiler alert: answer is no. Tim Scott has Colorado connections. But there is no real GOP race. And the host predicts no real debates.   Trump is a criminal defendant now. In a passionate start to the show, the host explains what happens now that Trump has gone near the line by posting “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I'M COMING AFTER YOU!” Great advice dispensed in the opening monologue to Judge Tanya Chutkan, presiding over USA v Trump.   Wadhams is passionate regarding Jan 6 and the need for 45 to be prosecuted. Jack Smith's bona fides as prosecutor discussed. Smith obtained a rare NY death penalty. So did the host on a Denver case. Normally, the GOP would love a law and order guy like Jack Smith but those days are gone.   MAGA is ruining Colorado GOP with staff not being paid yet. 50K went to Conspirator #2 John Eastman and RNC Committeeman Randy Corporon for futile lawsuit with budget for 250K. Wow! Wadhams reacts. State GOP being asked to approve Stalinist measure.   Harsh names are flying which is only appropriate since the GOP elected as chairman a man who wants to be known as Dave “Let's Go Brandon” Williams. Wadhams dislikes Williams and explains his many reasons why. We talk about all the ways Trump's Big Lie flowed out of Colorado.   Show Troubadour Dave Gunders delivers wonderfully once again with his song, "All that Water," which can be a metaphor for all the legal cases and charges now flooding America's 45th president and accomplished serial interstate criminal, Mr. Trump.

It's Friday, and we're rounding up the stories that caught our eye this week. Housing has been top of mind for Coloradans and finally, Governor Jared Polis was poised to do something about it — in the form of a massive housing and land-use bill. But SB213 was gutted this week, thanks to Republicans and Democrats standing up for “the Colorado Way,” as they put it. So what went wrong? Producer Paul Karolyi is joined by host Bree Davies and returning favorite Jo Ann Allen to chat all things housing, along with a rousing round of Two Truths and a Lie inspired by Denver hosting the inaugural Cities Summit of the Americas this week. Then newsletter editor Peyton Garcia has some sweet recs for your weekend! Chelsea and I continue from last week's discussion as news is quickly flying over the abortion pill and abortion pill reversal.Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA. The question over the abortion pill mifepristone's legitimacy in heads back down to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals after the Supreme Court stayed all lower decisions. Oral arguments are scheduled May 17.Bella Health and Wellness v. Weiser. The question over the abortion pill reversal in Colorado now heads up to a federal district court. Immediately after Governor Polis signed three radical abortion bills, including the infamous SB23-190 that chills pregnancy centers and bans abortion pill reversal, Bella Health and Wellness, a Catholic non-profit group of three medical clinics filed a lawsuit: Bella Health and Wellness v. Weiser. Judge Daniel Domenico issues a temporary restraint on the law for Bella. The lawsuit claims the brand new law is unconstitutional on several levels.Colorado executives and health agencies said they would not enforce the abortion pill reversal ban until October 1: a deadline for health agencies to give a thumbs up for the abortion pill reversal protocol. The Attorney General now claims that Bella has no standing to sue. But Bella naturally believes abortion pill reversal should be allowed for more than five mere months. The day this episode airs, Judge Domenico is scheduled to hear oral arguments over if he should extend the restraint until a trial.Sources Cited:Jesse Paul, "Colorado regulators, prosecutors won't enforce new state law banning 'abortion reversal' until medical boards weigh in," The Colorado Sun, April 21, 2023.Scriptures Cited:Philippians 4:8-9Proverbs 13:14Exodus 23:1-12We value your feedback!Have questions for Truthspresso? For the first time in his now five years as governor, Jared Polis is focusing on housing. Whether its an urban, rural, or suburban community, every part of Colorado is just too expensive. So how does our uber-popular, tech-loving, libertarian-leaning governor plan to tackle the housing issue? And what would a hypothetical future Polis-opolis look like? CPR state politics and housing reporter Andy Kenney is on today with our chief Polis watcher and producer Paul Karolyi to talk about how the Governor thinks about housing and how he could re-shape our cities.  Hear more from Andy and the CPR politics team as they cover the housing debate at the Capitol on the Purplish podcast.  Andy mentioned State Sen. Julie Gonzales and the rare moment of bipartisanship over housing at last year's legislative session. Don't miss our interview with Gonzales about how that all went down.  Paul mentioned the recent closure of the Tea with Tae shop at 16th and California.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver by texting “Denver” to 66866 Follow us on Twitter: @citycastdenver Chat with other listeners on reddit: r/CityCastDenver Leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: (720) 500-5418‬ Looking to advertise on City Cast Denver? What's going on with Denver's — and Colorado's — economy and how should we feel about it in 2023? Today on the show, host Bree Davies talks with Rich Wobbekind, senior economist at CU Boulder's Leeds School of Business, about inflation, the job market, and if we should be worried about that recession or not.  For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver by texting “Denver” to 66866 Follow us on Twitter @citycastdenver Leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: (720) 500-5418‬ Learn more about the sponsor of this episode: Westwood Academy Looking to advertise on City Cast Denver?
