Are you ready to stop letting college costs dictate your child's future?  Today on Eyes Wide Open, we're joined by Shellee Howard, founder of College Ready and a leading college funding expert, to discuss the radical intentionality required to build a successful, debt-free college path.  Shellee shares her insights from over 15 years in the field and her passion for helping families align education with future-proof careers. We dive into the broken narrative that "prestige" equals success and why the traditional college route is not the only option in the age of AI disruption.  Shellee details her groundbreaking "See Our Future Now" process to identify a student's unique gifts and how to strategically select colleges based on career fit and earning potential, not just location or ranking. We discuss practical strategies for minimizing costs through scholarships, work, and understanding the complex world of student aid, including how to teaching financial literacy effectively.  We also cover the impact of changing job markets, the reality of influencer marketing, and customizable paths that prioritize passion, income, and lifestyle goals.  Whether your child is in middle school or about to apply, this conversation provides a roadmap for returning to a culture of clarity, sovereignty, and true preparation for adulthood.   In this episode, you will learn:  - The Debt-Free Roadmap: Practical, actionable steps to find and maximize scholarships and choose colleges that minimize student debt while maximizing ROI. - Future-Proof Careers: Understanding the impact of the AI workforce on future careers and how to align your child's gifts with a sustainable, fulfilling career path. - The Strategic Application: Why a personalized, strategic approach to college admissions (that often starts in middle school) is crucial for success and avoiding common mistakes. - The "Prestige" Myth: A candid discussion on the true value of prestigious degrees, the role of alumni networks, and why college list selection should be personalized, not rankings-driven. - Entrepreneurial Mindset: How early planning, adulting skills, and finding gifts in childhood (including Shellee's own story) create an entrepreneurial mindset for life.   Books / Publications: How to Send Your Child to College Without Losing Your Mind or Your Money (Best-seller) - https://bit.ly/CRBook1 The College Admissions Plan Simplified (Best-seller) - https://bit.ly/CRBook2   About Our Guest Shellee Howard is a dedicated college funding expert, author, and the founder of College Ready. What if everything we've been told about making college "affordable" is actually making it more expensive and worse? Robert Bortins sits down with Dr. Ben Merkle, President of New St. Andrews College and Oxford-educated scholar who wrote the foreword to "Woke and Weaponized." As one of fewer than a dozen colleges that refuse all federal student loan dollars, Dr. Merkle offers a rare insider perspective on how government money has corrupted higher education—and why K-12 schools should learn from their mistakes. Dr. Merkle traces the problem back to the GI Bill after World War II, explaining how federal funding changed the customer of education from students to government. Once colleges became dependent on Title IV money (Pell Grants and student loans), they became subject to Title IX mandates—leading Christian colleges to spend a year teaching students "how to receive consent for fornication" and removing backbones from administrators who now compete to be the most compliant rather than the most excellent. The financial impact is staggering. While other colleges charge $55,000-$60,000 annually (with fake "scholarships" discounting sticker prices), New St. Andrews provides superior classical education for just $18,600 per year—proving that without compliance officers and administrative bloat, quality education is affordable. Dr. Merkle exposes the Bennett hypothesis: every dollar added to federal grants causes reciprocal tuition increases within 18 months, creating a self-perpetuating cycle that makes education more expensive and worse quality simultaneously. Most provocatively, Dr. Merkle warns that classical Christian education—"the single biggest cultural victory for the American evangelical church"—is being handed over to the state through school choice programs. Charter schools aren't pulling kids from public schools; they're pulling families from Christian education into secular classrooms. He challenges administrators: stop serving mammon, define your mission clearly, and understand that funding is authority. The institutions we've sacrificed to build will be wasted if we trade them for government money. Resources: https://nsa.edu/ This episode of Refining Rhetoric is sponsored by:  "Woke and Weaponized: How Karl Marx Won the Battle for American Education—And How We Can Win It Back" – A new book written by Robert Bortins and Alex Newman.  Discover the shocking truth about how current education reform efforts may actually accelerate the destruction of educational freedom. Through meticulous research, Woke and Weaponized traces the philosophical roots of educational corruption from Robert Owen and John Dewey to critical race theory, while offering practical strategies for families ready to pursue genuine educational independence. “As I was reading Hooks and Freire, a colleague recommended Adrian Rich's essay "Teaching Language in Open Admissions." It was in that essay that I first read about her experiences teaching at CUNY during open admissions, learning that she taught alongside June Jordan, Audre Lorde, and Toni Cade Bambara. Eventually, that essay led me to their archival teaching materials. I was really excited because I found in those materials concrete teaching methods, things they were doing in their own classrooms that I then started trying in my classrooms as well. I also really liked their educational philosophies, thinking about what it means for college to be free and the fact that they were teaching during this revolutionary era. What would that look like today? What would it mean? What could free college bring to our society? What does free college make possible? All of those things coming together led me to the project.”In this episode of the Speaking Out of Place podcast, Professor David Palumbo-Liu talks with Danica Savonick about her marvelous book entitled Open Admissions: The Poetics and Pedagogy of Toni Cade Bambara, June Jordan, Audre Lorde, and Adrienne Rich in the Era of Free College. This is a riveting and deeply inspiring story of how each of these luminaries in the fields of literature and feminism found their way into the City University of New York in the 1960s, when community activists had forced open what was called the Harvard for the proletariat to admit new classes of Black, brown, and other people of color. Savonick shows through copious archival research how Bambara, Jordan, Lorde, and Rich each came to find radical teaching methods in collaboration with these new students, and how their experiences with this new pedagogy affected their creative and other writing in profound and lasting ways. This is a critical history we can and must learn from today, when federal and state governments have added to the damage and violence done by the neoliberal university. We find exactly the tools and models we need to create spaces for education for liberation both within, but also outside, the Academy.Danica Savonick is an Associate Professor of English at SUNY Cortland.
