(It'll all become clear in the episode.) We discuss the ethical implications of AI in enhancing human capabilities versus diminishing them, particularly for students. We also delve into the relationship between Freudian language theory and modern AI. Despite its current limitations, there's also a very interesting potential for AI use in historical martial arts research, where we could use it to provide new insights without modern biases. Ze wist als bakvis erg goed wat ze wou: een gezin met vier kinderen. Dat draaide even anders uit. Ze was 27 toen ze koos voor een religieus leven. Mieke Kerckhof trad in bij de congregatie van de Zusters van de Bermhertigheid Jesu in Brugge. Ze was pastoraal werker in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis, studeerde ziekenhuiswetenschappen en bio-ethiek. In juli 2012 verkozen haar medezusters Mieke Kerckhof tot algemeen overste van de congregatie. Mieke Kerckhof maakt graag deel uit van een groep, maar was nooit een tafelspringer. Met oordelen is ze zeer voorzichtig, omdat je daarvoor eerst in andermans schoenen moet kunnen staan. Eén van de belangrijkste woorden in haar leven is, Augustinus achterna, genieten. Ik praat met haar over haar levensweg, over zelfdoding en euthanasie bij ondraaglijk psychisch lijden, over hoop en wanhoop en over Augustinus uit wiens vaatje ze graag tapt.

Mieke Bal (1946) is a Dutch theorist, video artist, and a well-known writer and feminist. She has been a Professor in Literary Theory (University of Amsterdam). In 1994 she was a co-founder of the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). Bal has been teaching at many institutes and universities in Europe, US, and beyond. She is known for her specific ways of ‘deep-reading' artworks (e.g. Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Louise Bourgeois, Nalini Malani), and intertwining her research with various disciplines, such as contemporary and nineteenth-century literature, psycho-analysis, gender studies, philosophy, bible studies. Bal also works as a video artist, which she approaches as a specific form of cultural analysis.  Now that Mieke Bal is getting older —being very active and involved in many art and research projects—she has been ruminating on how to reflect on a full life with different roles and experiences. Op dinsdag 3 juni overleed Peter de Bie, op zijn 75e verjaardag. Journalist en radiomaker, hij presenteerde jarenlang op zaterdagochtend de TROS Nieuws Show en daarna Nieuwsweekend van Omroep Max, samen met Mieke van der Weij. Peter de Bie was ook de man van presentatrice Dieuwertje Blok. Zij overleed eerder dit jaar. Een dag na zijn dood zond het Oog een ingekorte versie uit van het gesprek dat Coen Verbraak met Peter voerde kort voor zijn dood, over zijn besluit om niet verder te leven en zijn keuze voor euthanasie. In this episode, Julia is joined by Mieke Verloo and Mariel Mia Haug, a professor and her former student who connected at a conference on democracy and gender equality in Europe. What began as a formal introduction quickly evolved into a collaborative dynamic grounded in shared roots, values, and feminist ideals. Mia reflects on how she had to shed learned notions of deference and excessive politeness to form a meaningful connection. Mieke, the professor, in turn, shares how intentional presence, deep listening, and care are at the heart of how she holds space and how that is, in itself, a way of leading. They explore how age difference can create assumptions about what each person brings to the table, and how those assumptions can be challenged through honest dialogue and mutual respect. About The Guests: Mieke Verloo is Professor of Comparative Politics and Inequality Issues at Radboud University in the Netherlands, and Non-Residential Permanent Fellow at the IWM, Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. She has extensive publications on gender equality policymaking in Europe, on gender mainstreaming and intersectionality, on gendered body politics, gendered knowledge politics, and on opposition to gender equality in Europe. For 2022-2036, she is coordinating the CCINDLE project. Since 2020, she is also chair of the FLAX Foundation Mia Haug is a political science graduate from Estonia with a strong background in student politics. She's also the Operations Manager at Women Emerging. As cofounder and former board member of 020 - a student political party at the University of Amsterdam - she led key initiatives aimed at improving student representation and passed policies that addressed key issues affecting the community. Later, as Chair of LEF, a youth-oriented party in the Netherlands, she worked on radical policy ideas like universal basic income, better access to mental health care, and just climate action.
