In Romans 15:30-33, we encounter a powerful appeal that challenges our understanding of prayer and vulnerability within the body of Christ. The Greek word 'parakaleo' - meaning to urge, appeal, or earnestly request - frames this passage with urgency and importance. What's striking is that the Apostle Paul, who wrote much of the New Testament and planted churches throughout the known world, doesn't end this section with requests for money, recognition, or applause. Instead, he asks for something far more valuable: prayer. This reveals a profound truth about spiritual leadership and community - even the most mature believers need the prayer support of others. Paul's request isn't self-centered but gospel-centered; he asks for protection as he returns to Jerusalem (ironically, to the very place where he once persecuted Christians) so he can continue his ministry. This passage invites us to examine our own approach to prayer and community. Are we willing to be vulnerable enough to ask others to pray for us? Do we follow through when someone shares their burdens with us, or do we offer empty promises of 'I'll pray for you' without actually doing it? The call here is to become a people who genuinely bear one another's burdens, who stir up one another to love and good works, and who don't neglect meeting together for mutual encouragement. Prayer isn't meant to be a hyper-spiritual, eloquent performance - it's simply conversation with our Father, who wants to hear from us about everything, including the needs of those around us.**Sermon Notes – Romans 15:30–33 – “An Appeal to Pray”****Text:** Romans 15:30–33 > “I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf…”---### 1. The Weight of “I Appeal to You” (Parakaleō) - Paul isn't making a casual suggestion; he's urgently calling for attention and response. - *Parakaleō* = to urge, exhort, strongly request, comfort, encourage. - Other places Paul “appeals”: - Romans 12:1–2 – present your bodies as living sacrifices. - Romans 16:17 – watch out for those who cause divisions. - 1 Cor 4:16; 16:15; Eph 4:1; 1 Thess 4:1 – walk worthy, imitate Christ, submit to godly leaders. - Idea: “Look at me. Listen. This really matters.”---### 2. The Specific Appeal: Pray With Me (v. 30–31) - “Strive together with me in your prayers” – prayer is hard work, shared labor. - Paul, the great apostle, openly asks for help. No spiritual lone rangers. - His requests: - Protection from unbelievers in Judea. - That his service to Jerusalem would be acceptable. - That he might come to Rome with joy and be refreshed. - His prayer is gospel-centered, not comfort-centered: protection **for mission**, not just ease.---### 3. Why This Matters for the Church **a. Appeal for Prayer** - Normal Christian life: asking for prayer, not pretending “I'm fine.” - Requires humility, vulnerability, transparency.**b. Encourage Those Who Ask** - Don't just say, “I'll pray for you” and walk away. - Listen, ask wise questions (as appropriate), pray *on the spot* when possible. - Keep checking in: bear one another's burdens (Gal 6:2).**c. Follow Through in Prayer** - Prayer is simple conversation with the Father, not performance. - Use reminders, texts, calls; let people know you're praying (Phil 1:3–5). **d. Pray for Leaders** - Spiritual leaders (pastors, elders, parents, civil leaders) carry heavy responsibility. - Like Paul, they need protection, wisdom, clarity, and perseverance.---## Practical Applications1. **Ask for Prayer This Week** - Tell at least one trusted believer one real struggle and ask them to pray specifically.2. **Pray Immediately** - When someone shares a need, stop and pray with them right then if at all possible.3. **Create a Prayer List** - Include: family, church leaders, one hurting friend, one non-Christian, one global need.4. **Gospel-Shape Your Prayers** - Add: “How does the gospel advance in this situation?” and pray toward that.5. **Commit to Pray for Leaders** - Choose one leader (church, home, or civic) and pray for them daily for the next week.---## Discussion Questions1. What does Paul's repeated “I appeal to you” reveal about how seriously he takes prayer? 2. Why is it hard for you personally to admit “I'm not okay” and ask for prayer? 3. When have you actually felt “striving together” with someone in prayer? What was that like? 4. How can we as a group move beyond “I'll pray for you” to real follow-through? 5. In what ways are your prayers currently more self-centered than gospel-centered? 6. What specific things should we be praying for our church's leaders right now?

"If you expect nothing, you'll never be dissappointed," said one commedian. While sardonic in it's attempt at humor, the irony does seem to hit close to home: Doesn't it make more sense to keep our expectations low? But we can't live like that. That's certainly not the attitude the faithful in the Bible had! This phrase seems better: "Every disappointment gives you opportunity to make another appointment." And as it happens, that's not only a broad theme in the Bible, it's the story of Christmas. "Long lay the world in sin and darkness pining ... TIL HE APPEARED and the soul felt its worth!" That's what we're talking about in this week's podcast - celebrating a whole calendar year of conversations about Normal Christians and the Normal Christian life!▶️ Nate's Message on YouTube: https://tinyurl.com/ytp4e3df

Living in the reality of the crucified life is what opens new vistas of the possibility of the Christ life in and through you. In this sermon excerpt, Glenn Bleakney challenges modern believers to reclaim the supernatural normalcy of miracles as an integral part of Christian faith. Drawing from Jesus' ministry and biblical teachings, Bleakney argues that miracles are not relics of the past but a living testament to God's covenant and compassion . He critiques the modern church's tendency to prioritize pragmatic “self-help” messages over Spirit-empowered transformation, urging a return to the “complete gospel” that encompasses **spiritual salvation, physical healing, and emotional restoration . Through vivid examples from Scripture, Bleakney illustrates how Jesus' miracles—from healing the sick to casting out demons—reveal God's heart to liberate humanity from every form of bondage . The sermon emphasizes that faith and expectation are keys to unlocking divine intervention, rejecting the notion that miracles are rare or irrelevant today. Bleakney also highlights the importance of intimacy with the Holy Spirit, framing miracles not as exceptions but as natural outcomes of a life aligned with God's Kingdom purposes Ideal for seekers and leaders alike, this message invites listeners to step into a faith marked by bold expectation and a renewed understanding of God's power to “shift atmospheres” and manifest His glory on earth . The Normal Christian Life and When Heaven Invades Earth The book "When Heaven Invades Earth" explores the concept of living a supernatural Christian life, where miracles, signs, and wonders become commonplace [1, 2]. The book argues that powerlessness in the church is inexcusable and advocates for raising a generation that openly displays God's power [3]. The lack of miracles in many Christian experiences is not because it is not God's will, but due to a need for a renewed mindset achievable through the work of the Holy Spirit [2]. The book emphasizes that the Kingdom of God is not just talk but power and that seeking the Kingdom should be the priority of every Christian [4]. Bringing heaven to earth is a present reality and not something reserved for a future time [5, 6]. Repentance is essential for seeing the Kingdom, moving beyond seeking forgiveness to embracing the mindset of Christ revealed in the Beatitudes [7, 8]. Faith, anchored in the unseen, enables believers to access the realities of God's Kingdom and pull those realities into the natural realm [9, 10]. Fear is equated with faithlessness, and both fear and faith cannot coexist [11]. Christians should embrace their role as ambassadors of another world, representing God's Kingdom and wielding its authority [12, 13]. The Holy Spirit encompasses the Kingdom of God, enforcing Jesus's Lordship and marking His territory with liberty [14]. The baptism in the Holy Spirit makes a lifestyle of power available, surpassing even the experiences of those under the Old Covenant [15, 16]. Bible teachers should not just speak but also demonstrate God's power, leading believers to encounters with God that change circumstances [17, 18]. The Church should prioritize seeking a Christ-like expression of life and power, not just concepts and ideologies [19]. Power and character are intertwined, and weakness in one undermines the other [20]. Christians should actively pursue a life of power, relentlessly seeking God and desiring life-changing encounters with Him [21]. Believers must learn from those who walk in power, seeking out mentors and resources that exemplify a supernatural lifestyle [22]. The absence of power in the church is costly, robbing both God and humanity of the full expression of His Kingdom [23]. Signs and wonders are essential, providing courage, confirming God's Word, and revealing the nature of God's covenant with humankind [24-26]. Spiritual warfare is unavoidable, but believers can learn to battle with supernatural authority [27]. Revival brings a greater awareness of God's dominion and its effect on society [28]. Maintaining a passionate first love for God is crucial to avoiding complacency and spiritual blindness [29]. The Church should not shy away from the gifts of the Holy Spirit or attempt to control their manifestation, but rather embrace the unpredictable nature of God's work [30, 31]. Believers are called to infiltrate society with the Kingdom of God, subtly influencing their surroundings like leaven in dough [32, 33]. Sharing testimonies of God's power can ignite faith and expectation in others, leading to further miracles [25, 34]. God's plans for the Church are beyond human comprehension, requiring believers to rely on the Holy Spirit for guidance and understanding [35]. The Church should strive for wisdom, holiness, unity of faith, and a glorious manifestation of God's presence, fulfilling the prophetic promises found in Scripture [36-38]. www.TheSecondAdam.com
