Notes:Fable reads a definition of thriller. Here is that definition:Thriller: A fast-paced, gripping, plot-centered story…usually the protagonist is in danger from the outset. These fast-paced stories typically involve major threats…and the attempts to prevent something from occurring. Common elements: faster pace, action scenes, plot twists, prominent villain, “ticking clock” timing. - “What's the difference between Suspense, Thriller and Action Adventure?” by Liz SchriftstellerHere are some articles and videos that we found helpful in preparation for this conversation:Masterclass Dan Brown Article - “Writing 101: What Is the Thriller Genre? Definitions and Examples of Thriller in Literature” Masterclass Article - “What Is a Red Herring in Writing? Definition of Red Herring with Examples” “Jordan Peele's Advice on Writing Thrillers” – Get Out - YouTube Video “How to Write a Contained Thriller” by Tyler Mowery - YouTube Video “A Classic Alfred Hitchcock Plot Structure Device For Screenwriters” by Michael Hauge - YouTube Video “How To Write A Thriller” - Tom Bradby gives four top tips on how to write a thriller - YouTube Video “How Knives Out Switches Genres (Twice)” by Just Write - You Tube VideoThe Invisible Ink Blog Article - “Superior Position” by Brian McDonaldReedsy Blog - “How to Write a Thriller in 7 Heart-Stopping Steps” Fable references a quote from an interview with director Alfred Hitchcock, where he compares surprise and suspense. Here is that full quote:There is a distinct difference between ‘suspense' and ‘surprise,' and yet many pictures continually confuse the two. I'll explain what I mean. . We are now having a very innocent little chat. Let's suppose that there is a bomb underneath this table between us. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, ‘Boom!' There is an explosion. The public is surprised, but prior to this surprise, it has seen an absolutely ordinary scene, of no special consequence. Now, let us take a suspense situation. The bomb is underneath the table and the public knows it, probably because they have seen the anarchist place it there. The public is aware the bomb is going to explode at one o'clock and there is a clock in the decor. The public can see that it is a quarter to one. In these conditions, the same innocuous conversation becomes fascinating because the public is participating in the scene. The audience is longing to warn the characters on the screen: ‘You shouldn't be talking about such trivial matters. There is a bomb beneath you and it is about to explode!' . In the first case we have given the public fifteen seconds of surprise at the moment of the explosion. In the second we have provided them with fifteen minutes of suspense. The conclusion is that whenever possible the public must be informed. Except when the surprise is a twist, that is, when the unexpected ending is, in itself, the highlight of the story."We touch on several of our previous podcast episodes. Its very rare that we get to do two such seminal works of a genre! This week we get that lucky and get to examine two of the best films of their decade in the genre of Science Fiction! First up we tackle the seminal work of Stanley Kubrick that takes a look at the future which is now our past in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Following that we hop in a floating police cruiser and take a trip to 2019 and examines the concept of what it is to be human in the 1982 classic by Ridley Scott Blade Runner! Spoiler Alert: The future or past is a very depressing place that seems to have just as many problems as now!

Academy Award-nominated director Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, The Martian) joins me on the podcast to discuss how he saved his movie ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD from the Kevin Spacey scandal by making the unprecedented decision to recast the role with the legendary Christopher Plummer and reshoot much of the film just 6 weeks before it hits theaters. He talks about the late billionaire J. Paul Getty, why the richest man in the world refused to pay his own grandsons’ ransom, and what the oil magnate’s heirs have had to say about the film. Then actor Charlie Plummer (Boardwalk Empire, The Dinner), who plays Getty's kidnapped grandson talks about the unimaginable wealth and privilege that came with being a Getty and what it was like to re-enact the gruesome moment when the real-life John Paul Getty III got his ear chopped off. ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD opens in theatres on Christmas day 12/25. To find out more visit www.allthemoney-movie.com. Today's episode is sponsored by Grasshopper.
