Send me your thoughts in a Text MessageToday I am talking to Todd and Pernille Lent Damore, a married couple, dedicated and inspired to share practical tools and teach 10 fetters in a unique way.The teachings about the 10 fetters originate from Buddhism and are regarded as “The Noble Quest” however; you do not need to be a Buddhist to understand them or gain insight about them. You can easily learn them, reflect on them and actively make use of them in your everyday life. Todd and Pernille Lent Damore are working together to create The Awakening Curriculum, a comprehensive path to Awakening. Utilizing The Wheel of Identification, they use the Buddhist concept of the 10 Fetters as a practical application to wake up, moment to moment, amidst our everyday life. Together they have more than 50 years of Buddhist practice, and combine this with elements of psychology, embodied trauma release, and non-duality to help people integrate all experiences and insights into a life free from attachments, and unnecessary suffering. You can contact Todd and Pernille by email:unfetteredmindfulness@gmail.com Their website: https://theawakeningcurriculum.com/Awakening Curriculum YouTube: https://youtube.com/@TheAwakeningCurriculumUnfettered Mindfulness YouTube:https://youtube.com/@unfetteredmindfulnessBook 1:1 sessions with Todd:https://calendly.com/unfetteredmindfulness/one-to-one-guiding-sessionIf you need assistance with your own inquiry come to Liberation Unleashed where you can register for a free account and get a volunteer guide completely free of charge. In this podcast episode, we dive into the importance of using the right language when discussing mental health. Host Lisa Boehm shares the work of Dr. Damour who believes that mental health and mental illness should not be grouped together as one category, as they are different. Lisa highlights the red flags that psychologists look for, which involve feelings that don't fit the situation, become unmanageable, or persist without resolution. It is normal and healthy to experience uncomfortable emotions, such as sadness, depression, overwhelm, and anxiety, in response to certain situations. These feelings serve as feedback that can guide decision-making in the future. The episode also explores the ways in which males and females tend to handle mental health struggles differently, with females often discussing their struggles and males frequently distracting themselves. Additionally, Lisa discusses the connection between physical and mental health, the importance of building resilience, and the continuum of mental health ranging from good to poor to mental illness and disability. Seeking help and utilizing healthy coping mechanisms are emphasized as crucial for maintaining mental well-being. .............................................................................. TRANSCRIPT: Host/Lisa: After I listened to psychologist Dr. Lisa Damour, I started thinking, maybe we're thinking about mental health all wrong. Today I'll be talking about the red flags psychologists look for and why it's important that we use the right language when talking about mental health. Hi, my name is Lisa, and I love diving into matters of the mind. Before I began podcasting, I was a health coach. But life has a funny way of sending us in new directions. After a devastating loss and my own mental health struggles, I wanted to create a space where I could help you be well and stay resilient. Welcome to Rising strong mental health and resilience. Now let's get started. If you haven't heard of Dr. Lisa Damour, look her up. She is the author of three New York Times bestsellers, untangled under Pressure and the Emotional Lives of Teenagers. She also works in collaboration with UNICEF and is a recognized thought leader by the American Psychological Association. Dr. Damour is a regular contributor to The New York Times and CBC News. Even though she is not a guest today, I thought Dr. Damore deserved an introduction. Her thoughts are the center of today's episode. Her messages are eye opening, to say the least. She says the way we talk about mental health is so important, and while we are talking about mental health more, we seem to have grouped mental health and mental illness into one category, which in fact is incorrect. I love the way that she simplifies the psychology of mental health so that it's easier to understand. She says that psychologists don't question if we're sad or depressed or grieving. They question if the feelings don't fit the situation. Because if they don't and those feelings are ongoing, without resolve, or those feelings become bigger and more unmanageable, that's when they start seeing red flags. Dr. Damour said that those feelings sadness, depression, overwhelm, anxiety are not always pleasant, but they are normal. Psychologists see red flags when someone has had a terrible thing happen to them and they don't feel these big, hard feelings. To highlight this, I have a scenario. This is purely fictitious in all ways, shapes and forms. But let's meet Sarah. She's a vibrant and accomplished professional who found herself in the depths of despair after a heartbreaking breakup, the loss of a loved one, and persistent struggles at work. The weight of these challenges led Sarah into a state of profound sadness and depression. Sarah began speaking to a counselor, who provided her a safe space for her to express the overwhelming sadness and grief she felt. She also began to open up emotionally and started taking evening walks as a way to process her thoughts and emotions. These walks became a form of therapeutic release, allowing her to navigate the complexities of her feelings in a healthy way. Sarah's emotional reaction to her struggles is normal. It's normal to feel sad and depressed after a loss. Breakups and workplace stress she was managing her emotions in a healthy way. This scenario outlines what mental wellness is. Now, before you send me hate mail, this scenario is not meant to downplay anyone's struggles. Please don't interpret it that way. Life is freaking hard sometimes, and it can be really hard to cope. But that's why seeking help is so important. Another red flag for professionals is how someone's feelings are being managed. If the person is talking to friends and family, they have healthy coping mechanisms, and they aren't using unhealthy coping like drugs or alcohol, then all is okay. Feeling is healing, like I always say. So if we feel these feelings, that's okay. It doesn't mean that we are mentally unwell. We are human beings, and we were born with feelings feelings that feel good and those that make us feel really awful. My big takeaway from Dr. Lisa Damour is that uncomfortable feelings don't mean that they're unmanageable feelings. Let me say that again. Uncomfortable feelings doesn't mean unmanageable feelings. Unwanted emotions are normal and healthy, and there is nothing wrong with them. Guilt, fear, shame, heartbreak, grief they're all hard. But they are normal if they are in reaction to something that's happened. So newsflash, and this is for me as much as anybody this means that feeling this way means you are mentally well. Dr. Damour goes on to say that emotions are good data, which is feedback that helps us make decisions in the future. As an example, even though I'm a grieving mother, when I spend time with friends, stay physically active, and volunteer, I feel my grief shift, and I feel lighter. When I isolate myself and I'm around negative people, I feel worse. That feedback about my emotions helps guide me on my grief journey. So it's very helpful. Feelings are never right or wrong. They are just feelings. Being human means having feelings. It doesn't mean we have mental illness. But what we don't want is our emotions getting in the way of living life. That's where the problems are. We don't want anyone to be paralyzed by their feelings, nor do we want our coping mechanisms to cost us our physical health or make matters worse. Another thing that Dr. Lisa Damour brings to light is the different ways that males and females tend to handle mental health struggles. Now, let's pause big asterisks big disclaimer. Even she admits that this data didn't take different gender identifications into account. So please take this with a grain of salt. Rather, this data is focused on traditional genders. But the data suggested that females tend to get better at sharing and talking about their struggles because they tend to react by discussing it. And the more you do anything, the better you get at it. Makes sense, right? Alternatively, males tended to distract themselves, which at first glance, doesn't seem like a big thing. But the problem is that the more you distract yourself and not talk about it, the worse we get at being okay. Sharing so constantly distracting ourselves isn't a great long term plan, especially when that distracting behavior turns into activities that numb us, like drugs and alcohol.

As we approach the end of the school year, this episode of Room to Grow addresses using self-reflection to celebrate the learning of the year. Our hosts use this definition: “Self-Reflection is the evaluation or judgement of one's performance and the identification of one's strengths and weaknesses with a view to improving one's learning outcomes (Damore, 2017),” and start with unpacking this quote from John Dewey: “We don't learn from experiences, we learn from reflecting on our experiences.” In the conversation, Curtis and Joanie suggest that reflecting at the end of a lesson, unit, month or school year provides the opportunity to be energized by and to benefit from what we've experienced and how we use that learning to continue to improve. After making the case for self-reflection, the discussion shifts to specific ideas for student and teacher self-reflection. Ensuring that students understand the purpose of self-reflection is integral to making the process meaningful for students, and increases the likelihood that their reflective practices will contribute positively to owning their own learning, and to building positive mathematical identities. Some specific reflection questions and protocols are discussed, giving you ideas you can apply in your own setting as we all wrap up the 2021-22 school year. We encourage you to explore these resources, mentioned and referenced in this episode:Dewey quote and Damore's definition of Self-Reflection came from this post: Routines for Self-Reflection: https://thinkingpathwayz.weebly.com/routinesselfreflection.html Journal of Practitioner Research article on reflection as a tool for continuous improvement: https://digitalcommons.usf.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1044&context=jprEdutopia article with specific ideas for engaging students in self-reflection: www.edutopia.org/article/frameworks-reflection   Tuning protocol as a way for groups of teachers to reflect specifically on student work: http://essentialschools.org/horace-issues/the-tuning-protocol-a-process-for-reflection-on-teacher-and-student-work/ Teachers and Change: The Role of Reflective Practice: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1877042812039870 Share your feedback, comments, and suggestions for future episode topics by emailing roomtogrowmath@gmail.com. Con questa terribile fine scompariva una delle coppie più ammirate dell'epoca, oltre che a un altro pezzo della famiglia Kennedy. JON D'AMORE; Bestselling author from New Jersey who “did it himself” CONTACT INFO: Website: www.jondamore.com BIO; Jon D'Amore was born and raised in Hudson County, New Jersey during the historic eras of the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s…and only a tunnel ride away from midtown Manhattan. He was immediately consumed by entertainment, education, and growing up in a culture and heritage few have ever experienced. While touring as a musician during the 1970s, Jon was also a feature writer for New Jersey's third largest newspaper, The Herald News, simultaneously allowing him to enjoy the best of his favorite worlds; playing rock & roll…and writing. Nineteen-eighty-five brought a new side to Jon's life. He stepped away from the music business, used the skills acquired as a stage performer and writer, and stepped into the corporate world. Fourteen years later, Jon realized he didn't want to grow up to be like the people he was working for…so he drove to Los Angeles and spent 18 months writing his memoir, The Boss Always Sits In The Back, and the next 13 years working as an editor and script-doctor for Hollywood studios and production companies. The Boss was released in May, 2012. What followed were four years of coast-to-coast book readings and signings, TV appearances, and multiple print and radio interviews. Wanting to give his new fans a follow-up, Jon knew Deadfellas would offer a satirical turn by bringing together everyone's fascination with the Mafia and the popular world of zombies, a genre that never dies. During interviews in 2017, the author was asked why he chose Deadfellas as his second book. He responded with, “I've never been happy living in the box others deemed to be the norm. So why would I start now?” Upon the release of his third book in 2018, The Delivery Man, Jon said, “There are no mobsters. No zombies. Just some good ol' vigilante revenge…and saving America from Russian and North Korean nerve gas attacks.” After three books that kept readers on the edge of their seats, in April, 2020, Jon again changed genres with As Long As I Have Lips, a romantic comedy set amid the advertising and cosmetic industries, and the attraction older women have of younger men. In December of 2020, he released the drama Rubdown, a story of innocence, sex, betrayal, romance, trust, murder and secret identities. What does the future hold? One thing's for sure, Jon's already writing the next book, and the odds are good that it won't resemble any genre he's previously given to the public. In the meantime, Jon's currently listens to rock & roll music all the time.

The Hills' newest resident, Caroline D'Amore, steps Behind The Rope. Caroline may be the newest cast member of The Hills: New Beginnings, but she is no stranger to this friend group. Having grown up in Los Angeles, Caroline has known many of our fav Hills cast members since childhood. She has also known many other household names, once dubbed Hollywood “It” Girl in the early 2000s due to her BFFs Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, ok, you get the idea. In addition to being a regular on the LA Club Scene with her famous Squad, her love of the nightlife and music eventually led to a successful career as a DJ which has taken her all over the world playing to sold out crowds of epic proportion. Caroline chats about her own past in reality TV prior to joining “The Hills” with appearances on “Keeping Up with The Kardashians”, “Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami” and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”, having walked in Kyle Richards' Fall Runway show for her fashion line, Shahida Clayton. Caroline opens up about how she was cast this season as The Hills' "new girl", the filming processes, seeing her “friends” for the first time once the cameras started rolling, her highs and lows from her freshman season and, of course, the drama. That drama included Mischa Barton, who slammed Caroline as a potential replacement after being let go from her not so stellar least season appearance on The Hills. Caroline chats about that epic day, her response, her thoughts on Mischa, the secret scene she filmed at Kathy Hilton's house last season that was cut, Mischa's urging of the cast to ignore her last season and what she would say if she ran into Mischa today. Of course, we also discuss the advice members of the royal family, Kim, Kourtney and Kris, gave her on reality tv, social media and the press now that she is a bona fide reality TV star in her own right. She is also a hardworking member of the family business, D'Amore's Pizza, which has locations throughout the LA area. In a full circle moment, after avoiding the fam business for a career in nightlife and DJ'ing growing up, Caroline has re-launched her brand new Organic Pizza Sauce called “Pizza Girl”, we discuss the origins of that sauce, the origins of the name "Pizza Girl", how a shift in her company caused her to say yes to The Hills, the 3 amazing flavors (The Vodka sauce is the best!), and of course, whether it is approved by Foodgod himself!! Cue music, “Starring at the blank page before you, Open up the dirty window… Feel the rain on your skin. No one else can feel it for you. Only you can let it in...The rest is still unwritten."@carolinedamore@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBONUS EPISODES Available at - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeBrought to you by NOOM - http://www.noom.com/VELVET (Sign Up for Your Trial Today)Brought to you by UNIDRAGON - https://www.unidragon.com (10% Off First Purchase - Use Code “VELVETROPES”)Brought to you by BETTER HELP - https://www.betterhelp.com/velvetrope (10% Off First Month - Use Code "velvet rope") MERCH AVAILABLE at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A male product manager at a tech company gives his take on the Google Memo that's been a big topic of discussion in recent weeks. To bring you up to speed: a software developer at Google called James Demore wrote a memo about the company's diversity policies. This memo spread fast internally before making it's way outside Google and causing a lot of controversy, and led to him being fired by Google. Demore wrote largely about so-called scientific and psychological differences between men and women and how they explain the gender balance in tech, and provdes research to back up his claims. (See the links below for more details along with two very good articles discussing the memo.)Alec Molloy has been a product manager for the past five years, and has worked in San Francisco, London and Malmo. He talks about how in some ways the memo accurately describes the situation within the tech industry, how it's calm language is both dangerous and also something he thinks these debates could benefit more from, and what he hopes future generations will take away from the discussions about gender diversity in tech.Host: Nas aka Nastaran Tavakoli-FarGuest: Alec Molloy, product manager at a tech companyLinks: ‘The Google Memo' http://bit.ly/2ubOmpP) by James Damore  On Google's firing of Damore http://read.bi/2uMBV3c‘The email Larry Page should have written to James Damore' http://econ.st/2vMFoAP ‘I'm a woman in computer science, let me ladysplain the Google Memo to you' http://bit.ly/2uvAif6 by Cynthia Lee in Vox  ‘The most common error in the media's coverage of the Google Memo' http://theatln.tc/2vgKtCN by Conor Friedersdorf in The Atlantic  The Gender Knot www.thegenderknot.com
