Mark and Zanandi discuss 2004 thriller The Village. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Bryce Dallas Howard and Adrien Brody, the polarizing film is considered to be a colossal miscalculation by some and a beautiful romance by others (which makes it great to talk about). In this episode, they also talk about misleading marketing, Roger Deakins, and the excellence of M. Night Shyamalan. Enjoy!

In episode two of our Visionary Remakes season, we survey the recent Coen brothers remake of True Grit (2010) and compare it to the original film, a John Wayne vehicle from 1969.Special Guest: Brian Eggert is the owner and film critic of Deep Focus Review, where he has written movie reviews, in-depth essays, and critical analyses since 2007. Brian also regularly appears on KARE 11, the NBC affiliate for the Twin Cities, to review and discuss movies. He belongs to the Society For Cinema and Media Studies, Minnesota Film Critics Alliance, Online Film & Television Association, International Film Society Critics, Independent Film Critics of America, The Critics Circle, and National Coalition of Independent Scholars.Westerns have gone through many cycles since the beginning of filmmaking. Right now, we are seeing an uptick in interest as the tv show Yellowstone dominates the traditional tv market. But back in 2010, Westerns were definitely far off in the background as comic book movies had begun to take over the box office. In 2010, the Coen brothers were coming off a very successful adaption of No Country for Old Men (2007) as well as two more left of center films, the sprightly spy romp Burn After Reading from 2008 and the niche existentialist A Serious Man from 2009. It is unclear why they decided to remake True Grit and focus on the novel from 1968 instead of the John Wayne movie which came a year later in 1969, but the choice was very successful. True Grit (2010) became the 2nd biggest Western in the modern box office. The 2010 True Grit showcases the refined talents of the Coens alongside the gorgeous cinematography of Roger Deakins, the layered and rich music from Carter Burwell, and a smashing breakout debut performance from Hailee Steinfeld as the lead Mattie Ross. The 1969 version of True Grit offers so much less. Despite John Wayne winning an Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn, the original film seems totally out of step and out of time. In hindsight, it was an end-of-the-line production for the core creatives involved. The director, writer, and star actor were all at the end of their careers. Indeed this very type of Western was on its last leg as evidenced by the giant leap the genre made at the same time this film was being produced and released. Watch any of the bigger westerns from the late 1960s and then try to sit through True Grit (1969). The dislocation and disorientation is severe. The original True Grit was a swan song that came about a decade too late.

SEASON 2 - EPISODE 124 - Quyen Tran - Cinematographer On this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer Quyen Tran (AHSOKA, MAID, PALM SPRINGS). We start the episode with Quyen's harrowing recollection of her experience in New York City on 9/11, and she reflects on how the event steered her life towards filmmaking. While studying film at UCLA, Quyen fell into documentary filmmaking, and she shares how she's since branched into directing television and miniseries. She reveals who gave her the initial push to even try directing, and she reveals what she enjoys about it compared to cinematography. We also discuss the films and shows that influenced Quyen early in life, and we share our appreciation for the universal visual storytelling in THE BENNY HILL SHOW and I LOVE LUCY. We later learn how Quyen used lighting to lean into the darker moments of the sci-fi comedy PALM SPRINGS, and she shares how she feels her experiences as a director has made her a better cinematographer. Plus, Quyen reveals what we included in the “Roger Deakins lighting kit” distributed to her class while we were the cinematographer-in-residence at UCLA years ago. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Sparse. Laconic. Expansive. Languid. Wry. The Coen Brother's 2007 Neo-Noir Western 'No Country For Old Men' moves to the fatefully ticking beat of it's own Grandfather Clock.  It's a film that rewards close viewing and is astoundingly faithful to Cormac McCarthy's novel while also being so completely a "Coen Brothers film" even as it's their (only?) adaptation of an existing book. Featuring an iconic performance by Javier Bardem as the philosophical killer Anton Chigur, brilliant cinematography from frequent Coen collaborator Roger Deakins, and perfectly wrought twangily-Texas turns by Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones. A number of signature Coens scenes of the lead characters interacting with a variety of shop clerks, receptionists, store owners, and authority figures abound.

There is no other filmmaker working today that personifies being the "man in the arena", as Theodore Roosevelt so eloquently put it, than Matthew Heineman. Arianne Phillips is an American costume designer. Phillips was recognized for her work on the Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, starring Neil Patrick Harris, earning her a Tony award nomination for Best Costume Design. Phillips has a long-standing relationship with Madonna, with collaborations including photo shoots, music videos and designing tour costumes for six world tours over the past two decades. She has been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design three times, for James Mangold's Walk the Line (2005), Madonna's directorial debut, W.E. (2011), and for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Phillips has also received a two BAFTA Award nominations for Tom Ford's A Single Man (2009) and Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Her film career also includes Tom Ford's Nocturnal Animals (2016), Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017), James Mangold's Girl, Interrupted (1999) and 3:10 to Yuma (2007), John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig And the Angry Inch (2001), Mark Romanek's One Hour Photo(2002), and Milos Forman's The People Vs. Larry Flynt (1996). In between film and music projects, Phillips works as a freelance fashion editor and stylist, collaborating with photographers for publications such as Italian Vogue, V Magazine, Harper's Bazaar, German & Spanish Vogueand W Magazine. She continuously challenges herself by taking on projects that explore new expressions of her creativity. In 2018, she made her New York City Metropolitan opera debut, designing Nico Muhly's opera, Marnie. Miuccia Prada selected Phillips for her Iconoclasts project; to curate installations for the brands flagship stores in London and Beijing which included a short fashion film for the brand, which Phillips wrote and directed, called Passages. Her friend Alessandro Michele, Creative Director of GUCCI commissioned her to create content for a special issue of A Magazine he guest edited and to style a brand film directed by Gia Coppola. She has also collaborated on special projects with Van Cleef and Arpels, Cartier, Valentino and Swarovski. Phillips was an inaugural member of the TIMES UP coalition and was asked by Reese Witherspoon to design its logo. Lawrence Sher, ASC,is an American cinematographer and film director, best known for comedy films such as Garden State, The Dictator, and The Hangover series, frequently collaborating with directors Todd Phillips and Zach Braff.[ He made his directorial debut with Father Figures, which began a wide theatrical release on December 22, 2017, by Warner Bros. Pictures. He was nominated for an Academy Award and BAFTA Award for Best Cinematography for the 2019 film Joker, directed by Phillips. As cinematographer of the 2009 film The Hangover, Sher described how a scene early in the movie shows the main characters on the roof of their hotel overlooking a stereotypical shot of the Las Vegas Strip; Sher indicated that he had tried to evoke the behind-the-scenes Vegas—after the characters wake up the following morning—by shooting a scene behind the hotels where the real action takes place. Actor Bradley Cooper credited Sher's visual style with enhancing the film's comedy, noting how Sher has "a great eye, a lot of energy and he just knows what's funny" and that "Some guys just can't shoot comedies, but Larry knows exactly what he's doing." With the success of Zach Braff's Kickstarter, Sher worked on Braff's 2014 feature, Wish I Was Here. In January 2020, Sher was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the movie Joker, but lost to Roger Deakins for 1917.

Wiz RECOMMENDS The Secret Garden I know what you are thinking: what an odd film to suddenly decide to watch. The Secret Garden, Agnieszka Holland's 1993 adaptation of the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is honestly a movie that has been forgotten despite that it's considered a great adaptation of a beloved novel and is shot by one of the best cinematographers of all-time: Roger Deakins. And by no surprise whatsoever, The Secret Garden is gorgeous. Everything in the movie has a magical feel to it, despite it being more grounded than whimsical. But a lot of the scenes, whether it's inside the manor or in the garden, it has an absolutely stunning look that elevates the story three-fold. But the film is not only just a looker, but it's also a thoughtfully artistic film. The film has balanced perfectly the sadder elements of the film with the more fantastical, which helps in not only being something that the audience it was meant for enjoying it, but adults as well. It's honestly very well done: even when the film gets dark dealing with death, illness and neglect, it has this feel that makes it seem more fairy tale than tragic drama. But I'll say this: if you are an adult just wanting to watch a movie, this isn't as in-depth as you'd like it. Again, the main audience is likely pre-teen and female who also likes nature (and melancholy, honestly), but there is just enough in the film for parents to get something out of it. It's actually quite surprising this movie doesn't get talked about more as a film that has aged so well: it's gorgeous with a smartly done story. Warner Bros. should release a Limited 4K UHD of this film: I'd snatch it in a second.

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the penultimate episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we hit the road in the year 2000, with two films featuring people looking to clear their name. It's Joel & Ethan Coen's folk musical comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's dark comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE. In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill, a criminal who convinces two fellow convicts (Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro) to break out of prison to seek treasure he left buried from a previous job. Turns out he really just wants to stop his wife (Holly Hunter) from getting remarried. Along their journey, they meet a young black musician who sold his soul to the devil, and cut a hit record together. They also meet a cyclops, sirens, and countless others in this unique adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. With more brilliant cinematography from Roger Deakins, a tremendous soundtrack featuring loads of old folk, gospel, and bluegrass standards, and quality performances all around, this is another winner for Joel and Ethan Coen. Can they ever be stopped? The Farrelly Brothers can attempt to do so with their road comedy Me, Myself & Irene, starring Jim Carrey in his first film with the Farrelly's since Dumb and Dumber. Carrey, who was just coming off starring in back-to-back serious roles (The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) returned to the gross-out comedy as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper who develops a split personality. Charlie must escort Irene (Renée Zellweger) to New York, where she is wanted for hit-and-run. The pair are then forced to go on the lam to avoid Irene's mafia-connected ex-boyfriend, whilst Charlie is also trying to suppress his new alter-ego, Hank. Some of this one holds up, but it is pretty much relying on a very wrongfully depicted mental illness – so take that for what you will. Is it enough to topple the sweet tunes of O Brother? We'll let you decide...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the 3rd episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, it's all about bowling! For some reason, both of these sets of brothers made bowling movies – and both of them performed pretty badly on release, only to become cult classics. So, we'll be talking about Joel & Ethan Coen's 1998 neo-noir comedy THE BIG LEBOWSKI, and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's 1996 sports comedy, KINGPIN. Which is the better bowling movie? In The Big Lebowski, Jeff Bridges shines in a career role as Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski in a tale of mistaken identity, deceitfulness, severed toes, nihilists, White Russians and lots of bowling. After his rug get soiled by a couple of guys looking for money from a millionaire with the same name, The Dude falls down a rabbit hole that feels straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. This film is damn near perfect. It's funny, has a great story, stellar performances with a supporting cast boasting John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore and John Turturro, a kick ass soundtrack and some insanely good cinematography from Roger Deakins. The Dude Abides. But is it a better bowling movie than Kingpin? Woody Harrelson plays Roy Munson, a young bowler who is just about to make it big, before his rival, Ernie McCracken (Bill Murray doing Bill Murray shit) tricks him into doing con games, which results in Roy's bowling hand getting destroyed. Years later, Roy is an alcoholic with a hook for a hand and no prospects, before he stumbles upon Ishmael (Randy Quaid), a promising young Amish man that Roy attempts to take to the top of the bowling world. It's more of what you expect from the Farrelly's, with some gross out humour, fun 90s soundtracks, and some hit or miss elements. But, it's pretty much the Farrelly's most underrated, and potentially one of their better titles. And, it actually is more about bowling than The Big Lebowksi, it just may look as nice. I mean, Deakins, man...Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...If you enjoy the podcast, leave a Rating and Review! It's a Benicio Double Feature! I breakdown Denis Villeneuve's masterpiece "Sicario" and slurp everyone up along the way - looking at you, Roger Deakins. Truly a great film in every way. Towards the end of the episode, I briefly discuss "Basquiat" a smaller indie film, also with a star-studded cast - starring Jeffery Wright, featuring our man of the hour, Mr. Del Toro. Enjoy! "And this guy peed on it." We wrap our mini series of looking at the iconic cinematographer, Roger Deakins, with the cult classic from 1998, "The Big Lebowski." In accordance with the tenets of his duderness, this episode is chill AF. We talk about how non-traditionally this flick reached cult status, and how John Goodman's Walter Sobchak is the MVP. Of course, we discuss the lived-in warmth this movie has visually, and how obviously that is thanks in part to Deakins' masterful handiwork. Stay tuned, because next month we're mixing things up a bit! We're bringing back co-host Ryan to discuss our first ever book-into-movie discussion, starting with "Marley & Me." This week I'm honored to be joined by Dallas Film Commissioner Tony Armer to discuss what, precisely, a film commissioner does. On this episode he discusses his own path to getting involved in the film industry, breaks down different kinds of incentives cities and states use to woo productions, and talks about how Dallas has made itself more attractive to major productions looking for a place to shoot. We also talk a bit about Tony's podcast; do yourself a favor and check out the episode featuring a post-screening Q&A with cinematographer Roger Deakins, who was in town a few months back for a showing of Blade Runner 2049. And if you enjoyed this podcast, please share it with a friend!

"If you fail, it will be a massacre." The Uncultured Universe continues to look at the people who bring a film to life, with this month's focus being on the cinematographer synonymous with the profession: Roger Deakins. To kick off the series, we watched the 2019 war epic, "1917." The boys pore over the realities of war, the neurodivergent tendencies of reacting emotionally to powerful and sweeping scores and cinematic moments, and the sheer awesomeness that this limited-cut/seemingly one-take masterpiece accomplishes. And of course, massive gushing over how damn good this flick looks, of course thanks in part to Deakins himself. Be sure to stay tuned for our next episode, where we go in the complete opposite direction of war, and look at another Deakin's classic "The Big Lebowski."--We are Uncultured Universe - the podcast where two friends show each other movies, tv, music, or anything else to get a little more cultured. Kelsi and Trey discuss the informal universe of Ridley Scott and Denis Villeneuve's project of Blade Runner set in a postmodern society where a few humans play god, consumerism is religion, and all of the human condition has been reduced to constructs and commodities. A lot to explore thematically with class and gender, as well as stylistically with the scope and scale of Roger Deakins, and then the iconic Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford throwing punches while Sylvia Hoeks and Jared Leto stealing the show by the end! Fargo, eh? You're darn tootin'!   After the disappointing reception to their previous film, the Coen brothers decided to retreat into something much smaller in scope. And although they expected Fargo to have somewhat limited appeal, it would go on to become one of their biggest hits.  Topics include: the nebulous nature of the movie's claim that this is based on a true story, the lengths William H. Macy went to in order to secure his role, how Roger Deakins' cinematography reinforces the major themes of the story, the origins of the film's unusual but iconic score, pushback on the idea that this is in any way punching down at Minnesotans, the movie's unexpected success, the first attempt to turn it into a television series back in 1997, the more successful incarnation that began in 2013, and much more!   Facebook | Twitter | Instagram Apple Podcasts | Stitcher | Google Play | Spotify Chris's Instagram & Twitter | Kristen's Instagram Chris & Kristen's Web Series: The Strange Case of Lucy Chandler

We chose to take a second look at Denis Villeneuve's ‘PRISONERS', starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal as committed as they'll ever be.
