Kevin and George are busy dads. They do Sci-Fi. New podcast episode every 2 weeks.
"Does a spaceship make it sci-fi?" Come along with us for an episode that was originally recorded in January of 2021, deep in the throes of the pandemic. So, does this mean The Busy Dads are back? More will be revealed. What it DOES mean is that we had a few episodes "in the can" and there is no way we couldn't just thrust them upon the world. Join Kevin & George as we wonder on whether ET: The Extra-Terrestrial is more of a fairy tale or a science fiction movie. We take a “fly on the wall” approach to our listeners. Oh, so he is like playing Bruce Willis but Bruce Willis ISN'T playing Joseph Gordon Levitt? Hm. That hardly seems fair. In this episode, a continuation of our EPIC time travel suite, the Busy Dads take a look at the only good movie that Rian Johnson has made. Oh, wait. This wasn't good either. Ok. Come on now! I'm pretty sure that we've ALL slept with our own mothers at some point. Well, perhaps not to THAT extent. Remember that movie about the remnants of humanity stuck on a train and they had to constantly move on the train or they'd all freeze to death and Captain America and John Hurt and Ed Harris and Tilda Swinton were in it? Wow. Winter Break seemed extra long this year. Kevin and George (and Producer Vic) are BACK...from the dead? Maaaaaaaybe. More specifically, they are back with the brand of mediocre podcast that only two busy dads can bring you. Sit back, relax and enjoy as we discuss the absolute brilliance of MAD MAX. Which is, apparently, NOT Road Warrior. Huh. We take a “fly on the wall” approach to our listeners. As such, some of what we discuss falls into the realm of SPOILERS. Consider yourself warned. "Cockroaches." --Kevin In the third installment of our Inhuman Women Suite, Kevin and George take a look at the Jonathan Glazer flick UNDER THE SKIN. Scarlett Johannsen has come to Earth and she's seeking men to turn into intergalactic bloody soup. Perhaps you'd like to volunteer? Eh? You wanna be soup for Scarlett? No? Ok. Good job. "That's why I had to move out of Highland Park." --George Often a monster movie comes with a level of suspension of disbelief. At times, that level can be asking too much from an audience. The movie SPRING, from film making duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead, is not one of those movies. The horror included doesn't ask you to check your brain at the door, nor is it too subtle or vague. It is both quiet and visceral and accomplishes these tasks while telling a very human story. Join Kevin and George as they take a romantic break and watch what is, essentially, a romantic comedy....with monsters. Join us! "Subby Lawrence." --Kevin What is one of the worst things a movie can do? Is it when it's just bad? Is it when it's good but could be better? Perhaps both. However, as I write this, I find myself thinking that Robert Rodriguez's ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL managed to top both of those options. It's a movie that has so many good qualities that should make it great, but just barely falls short of legendary status. Agree? Disagree? Sound off and tune in as Kevin and George take a dip into the world that is the James Cameron produced IRON CITY in ALITA: BATTLE ANGEL. Join us! Every once in a while you come across a movie that was birthed of a fantastic idea. No one really nurtured it by giving it a huge budget or a ton of publicity, but it didn't really matter. Perhaps the lack thereof is actually what propelled the filmmakers to stay true to their vision. THE ENDLESS is such a movie. Come and check out what is sure to be a TERRIBLE podcast, based on the fact that both Kevin and George loved this movie. Despite that though, I believe we manage to get to the heart of the matter here. A thorough dissection of a great science fiction movie and a snappy back and forth between friends in which we ALL learn something about the other. And we're even wearing pants for this one, folks. "Dondo!" --G Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse manages to have something that very few big screen adaptations of the wall-crawler have had: heart. I think that this is the only thing that the cross-dimensional versions of George and Kevin can agree upon. Come with us now on a journey through the Multi-Verse as we encounter the single versions of George and Kevin, the NPR-ized incarnations and the one, true version: The Busy Dads. "I just don't think about it." --Theo CHILDREN OF MEN was a 2006 dystopian science fiction masterpiece that showed up what a slowly decaying world would look 20 years into a global plague in which no human can reproduce. This movie both haunting and important and Kevin and George are sitting down and going toe to toe on how much it meant to both of them. "I think the 15 pizzas are here." --Kevin John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is long considered a classic of 80s Sci-Fi and a gem of the cult movie genre. "Mark Twain." --Kevin 1996 might not be known as the best year in Science Fiction, or maybe it is. I don't know. I didn't exactly do any research on it. However it was the year that the Philip K. Dick short story SECOND VARIETY was adapted into the movie SCREAMERS, starring Peter Weller and Jennifer Rubin. "NOPE!" --George What does one talk about when everything that can possibly be talked about has been talked about? This is the dilemma that confronts the BUSY DADS as they take a long, hard (hah) look at STAR TREK 2: THE WRATH OF KHAN. A paramount achievement of not only Star Trek, but of Sci-Fi in general. Kevin, an uninitiated wanderer in the world of Trek, and George, a Klingon speaking Trekkie/er that still pretends he is commanding a starship when he's in the shower, take your hand on this miraculous journey. You SHOULD be scared!
"INSUFFICIENT DATA FOR A MEANINGFUL ANSWER" Isn't that what we're all after? A meaningful answer. So, in lieu of our Wrath of Khan episode, we are instead going to be doing another dramatic reading of a great Science Fiction Short Story. Join BUSY DAD George as he reads THE LAST QUESTION by the master Isaac Asimov. Asimov actually considered this short to be some of his finest work and, I must say, that I agree. It weaves a classic sci-fi tale of man wrestling with his own limits and surpassing them. Only to find that there are some answers man is not meant to have. As if George's life wasn't busy enough, his favorite Russian film making antagonist is back from beyond the grave. Kevin and George sit down, crack a bottle of non-flavored seltzer (thanks, Vic) and talk about Andrei Tarkovsky's iconic masterpiece STALKER. Meditative. Beautiful. Mesmerizing. But, science fiction? The culmination of 18 movies and 10 years of movie making and it, SOME HOW, did not manage to let George (a dedicated Marvel fanboy) down in the slightest. "...shorter." --Kevin In this episode we take another look at Neil Blomkamp's Oats Studios and their new three part short series, Adam. What did it do for us? What could it do for you? How does one tell a vast story in such a tiny amount of time? Why are some better than others? We answer absolutely none of those questions and, instead, just make fun of each other for most of the episode. However, it's still a good time. Check us out.
"That doesn't sound right. That sounds negative." "It sounds fecal." How can one movie make George go from crying during the viewing to throwing a keyboard at Kevin while discussing it the next day? How can the same movie have Kevin pontificating about the mortality of the Cyclops in the Odyssey and also begrudging Jared Leto for not looking homeless enough? How can one movie elicit such different responses from two ENTIRELY RATIONAL (I know) people!?! How?!? This is the paradox of the movie MR. NOBODY. "Whatever you do don't pull your punches!" --Kevin Star Wars is known the world around. It's pervasive and it's iconic. The Busy Dads have watched the most recent entry into the Star Wars saga, THE LAST JEDI directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper). We share a bottle of seltzer and discuss whether or not it's possible for a movie called STAR WARS to actually NOT be STAR WARS. We also talk about whether or not that really matters and how much are we going to try to NOT like something even in the face of floating, frozen people in space. Come and listen to us overly dissect a movie that we both really enjoyed in order to please the inner fanboy that wants desperately to not like something that the higher self wants equally desperately to love. Also, we make jokes about turning loveable Disney toys into sex dolls. So, there's that. Also, lets us know what YOU thought. This was a divisive Star Wars movie and we want to know what you thought as well, listener. "The name of this episode should be DO WE HAVE TO?" --Kevin After a well-written and critically acclaimed first season The Duffer Brothers return to Netflix with STRANGER THINGS 2. Kevin and George revisit their favorite characters from Hawkins, Indiana and even take a kinda "meh" side trip to Chicago, Illinois. What worked and what didn't? Did we still care? How long can they keep this series going on just the ultimate beauty that is Steve Harrington's hair? Find out all of this and more in this episode of BUSY DADS DO SCI-FI! Join us! "What would you do if you knew this was the last night of the world?" For our Thanksgiving special Busy Dad George does ANOTHER reading of a great Ray Bradbury short. This time around it's THE LAST NIGHT OF THE WORLD. What better way to be grateful for all that we have, than to be reminded that likely in another universe there is a version of you that is standing in a post-apocalyptic rubble just trying not the break his glasses. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody. See you in two weeks! BIBLIOGRAPHY: "The Last Night of the World" from THE ILLUSTRATED MAN by Ray Bradbury We take a “fly on the wall” approach to our listeners. "I think that believes how in depth you are." --Kevin (tired and still on East Coast time) It's a sequel to Prometheus. It's also a prequel to Alien. Oh, and it's a prequel to Alien Vs. Predator. Wait. No. It's a prequel to Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem. So, that makes it a sequel to Predators also. Well, ALIEN: COVENANT already has a lot of dings in its armor. Divorced from all that continuity mess, how does this Ridley Scott movie stand up on its own merit? "Stupid people ruin shit." --George As part of our exploration of all things Blade Runner, the Busy Dads take a solid look at the new sequel to the cult classic. What does a movie like Blade Runner 2049 mean for the modern cinema experience? Do quiet, meditative movie experiences have any chance against the behemoths of Disney's Marvel and the endless spawn of sequels and franchise wannabes? Just how DAMN good was this movie? Find out and we dive in head first into Blade Runner 2049 on this episode of Busy Dads Do Sci-Fi Podcast. "The meditative quality of this meditative movie was moving." --Kevin In a continuation of our return to some of the classic of Sci-Fi, and in anticipation of the sequel, the Busy Dads will finally take a look at the Ridley Scott iconic film that is BLADE RUNNER. Kevin and George discuss why this movie is important now and why it's important to both of them. There is some talk of comparison to the seminal work by Philip K. Dick on which the movie is loosely based as well as talk about any expectations we have for where the universe could go in the next movie. So, get your Replicants out of retirement and join us for Episode 47 of the Busy Dads Do Sci-Fi Podcast. Replicants our of retirement? That doesn't make any sense! If they're retired that means they're dead. Oh, jeez. I'll never hear the end of this one. "I don't know how Moonraker isn't Sci-Fi if The Orville is." --Kevin We take a look at the first 3 episodes of the hot new FOX show The Orville. From the mind of Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, Ted, American Dad) comes what is seemingly a love letter to Star Trek: The Next Generation. So, why does it also seemingly fall so flat? We're open to the path ahead, but so far the road is bumpy and unfunny. If this description alone is not enough for ya, please give us a listen. "Why we gotta talk about people?" --Kevin Neill Blomkamp is a big name in Sci-Fi, unless you were to ask Kevin. In this episode we take a look at three separate short films from Blomkamp's OATS STUDIOS: Firebase, Rakka and Zygote. We discuss each one individually and as a whole. "It's so European. Maybe even worse: it's Canadian!" --Kevin We might get a little out of hand on this one. If that's the case, it's only because we care so much. The independent "sci-fi" movie EMBERS brings out the best in both Kevin and myself as we discuss the futility of life in a world with no memory, rampant sickness and inevitable starvation and sexual assault. I know. I know. Painting a bring picture of the future of humanity, huh? But, hey, at least it's got John Ritter's son in it. So, you can kinda pretend that he's still alive. Yes. I agree that including Don Knotts would have really sealed the deal. We take a “fly on the wall” approach to our listeners. As such, some of what we discuss falls into the realm of SPOILERS. "The numbers are goin' through the roof." --Producer Vic Kevin has gone on a long journey to a mysterious, alien place known only as Florida. George decides to take this ONE moment to get a little dramatic, a move he will surely never make again in his life. This episode is a reading of the Ray Bradbury short story THE ONE WHO WAITS. Enjoy.

"Is this a hand job in the theater movie?" --Kevin LIFE is beautiful. LIFE is precious. LIFE is a many splendored thing. All of that. This is not the case with all things that bear the label LIFE. Now, while I haven't seen the Eddie Murphy movie of the same name, I can't imagine it being much more forgettable than the trip that Kevin and George take in this podcast. We watch the 2017 "sci-fi" movie LIFE, so that you don't have to. We don't agree on the outcome one bit. Come and see where the chips lay. Who liked it? Who hated it? Why did it get made? "I would have rather been reading." --Kevin Luc Besson's 1997 "masterpiece" THE FIFTH ELEMENT is an audience divider. Or is it? Do you really have to split one way or the other on a movie like this? What makes this movie a cult classic? IS IT a cult classic? How does it differ from other camp movies from the same era? What does it get right and what does it fall flat on? Kevin and George revisited the Bruce Willis sci-fi flick 20 years after its initial release and came away with conflicting opinions on what we had seen. "How deep was the well back then?" -- Kevin We are a sci-fi podcast and we'd be remiss in our duties if we did not, as some point, talk about the genius that is Ray Bradbury. The man that shaped the ideal of mainstream sci-fi and influenced generations to tell their own stories on Mars and beyond. Kevin and George unpack six of Bradbury's short stories and talk about the man, his influence on their own lives and where they see his work touching the work of others.
