The 1980s were a golden age for comedy—a time when the big screen was overflowing with unforgettable characters, razor-sharp one-liners, and some of the hardest laughs ever caught on film. This week, we're zeroing in on the funniest comedies of the decade. Not necessarily the most critically acclaimed or technically flawless—but the movies that made us laugh the hardest. Let's dive in!
Send us a textIt's going to be a fun episode, I tell you what!Episode 206 is loaded with Gen-X nostalgia to help you cope with the dog days of summer. It kicks off with an in-depth look at one of the most underrated yet renowned animated shows. King of the Hill graced the airways for 13 seasons with a mix of humor and heart. Now it is making its return after 15 years to Hulu. We will look at what made the show so beloved and why it is deserving of its reboot.Getting your driver's license is a rite of passage for teenagers. How we got to that point depends on when you grew up. Most likely, it included some form of driver's education. We'll go back in the day for some of the history of driver's ed, along with a few embarrassing stories from my own journey to becoming a licensed driver. The 1980s were the decade when movie soundtracks became every bit as important as the movies themselves. Sometimes more important. On this week's Top 5 we look at some of the best 1980s movie soundtracks. In this month's GenX Book Club, Paul Stroessner, Suzanne Mattaboni, and Del Roehling dive into Michael Koresky's heartfelt memoir-meets-film-critique, Films of Endearment: A Mother, a Son, and the ‘80s Films That Defined Us. Koresky revisits ten female-driven films of the 1980s with his mother, using them as a lens to explore family, loss, identity, and how movies shape the way we see the world. The discussion covers: How films like 9 to 5, Terms of Endearment, Aliens, and Baby Boom look different when revisited decades later Reflections on workplace inequality, motherhood, identity, and resilience portrayed in these movies How generational and personal experiences change the way we view iconic films over time Connections to movies like Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean and Crossing Delancey Why the ‘80s still feels like a “golden age” for character-driven, female-led stories The team also shares their own movie memories, from watching creature features as kids to experiencing how VHS tapes and early cable changed the way we consumed film, as well as some emotional connections to the films that Michael Koresky covers in this book. Next month's pick: The Celebrants by Steven Rowley, a heartfelt story of friendship and second chances that flashes between the ‘90s and today. More from the GenX Book Club Crew
Send us a textDo you remember Stephen King's Maximum Overdrive from the 80s? We remember liking this movie a lot. We admit that it was a little cheesy back then, and we're hoping that this turns out to be a whole lot of 80s cheesy goodness. So join us as we go back to 1986 when machines turned on their makers, forcing Emilio Estevez, under the direction of Stephen King, to fight back and show those machines who made who.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Send us a textDo you remember One Crazy Summer from 1986 starring Demi Moore and John Cusack? We did. Sort of. So join us as we join Cusack and Moore, along with Bobcat Goldthwait, Curtis Armstrong, Joel Murray, Kimberly Foster and more in one crazy movie about One Crazy Summer.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?

In this episode Kieran and I celebrate the 40th birthday of 'Back to the Future' with a discussion on the iconic Johnny B. Goode scene from that film.
As a follow-up to her beloved '80's cult class Valley Girl, director Martha Coolidge delivered another beloved cult classic two years later with this science-based (sort of) campus comedy starring the late, great Val Kilmer in one of his earliest roles as the wisecracking titular genius Chris Knight. Knight has been tasked with building a laser by his duplicitous professor (William Atherton) though at least he has help in the form of the latest young genius to be recruited to the fictional Pacific Tech - that would be Mitch Taylor played by Gabriel Jarret (Apollo 13, Frost/Nixon) who's definitely in over his head away from his parents for the first time in his life and the ripe young age of 16. Chris has to show Mitch the ropes, they both learn from each other as they work to build that laser, and hijinks ensue! On the latest episode of the podcast, Doug wants listeners to understand that he's a good person before he describes the domestic violence in this movie as 'funny', Jamie saw the 'Playboy Productions' in the credits and braced for some serious smut that never made it on screen, and we both agree that you probably shouldn't introduce a man to your kid on the very first date. Originally released: April 13, 2017 In this special Throwback Thursday episode, Paul and Robert are joined by the legendary Doug McCoy—host of the now-retired McCoyCast podcast network, which included shows like Never Seen It, Crazy Creepy Cool Movies, and In the Theater. Doug also wrote the eBook TV in My Time. While none of Doug's past content is currently available online, we're thrilled to preserve this conversation as a tribute to his fantastic contributions to the retro podcasting world. Inspired by Doug's podcast Never Seen It, this episode takes the same approach: at least one of the three of us had never seen Highlander until prepping for the show. We discuss first impressions, what holds up, what doesn't, and how this cult classic became such a defining piece of ‘80s sci-fi/fantasy cinema. Also in this episode:

Ross and I have both had family in town which makes sticking to our usual schedule a bit difficult. Things should be back to normal here shortly.Anyways! In this episode, Ross and I set out to find some new summer dungeon synth. That didn't work out, so by complete chance Ross went with dungeon synth and I went with summer. It doesn't matter! Watch your step! This week, we're revisiting that sci-fi family classic, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Back in 1989, this Disney flick delighted audiences with its cute concept, its practical effects, and its ... completely terrifying fight-to-the-death bug battles. But now, decades later, does it now feel a little less than the sum of its parts? Is Rick Moranis' Wayne a bad scientist and a bad dad? Do both parents in this "family movie" have issues way bigger than shrunken kids? And why does the mud look so gross? At a Pirates game, someone paid to put “Cheryl please take me back. I'm sorry I kissed ur sister. -Tim” on the Bucco Billboard, and now we're asking: what would you put up there? Also, Beaver County has a full-on nudist resort called White Thorn Lodge that's been hosting a naked volleyball tournament for 50 years. And yeah, someone in Squirrel Hill was trying to fistfight strangers in the street just for sport. In Lawrenceville, a shirtless guy stole a postal truck and started throwing mail out to people. Corndick of the Week goes to the guy who won $5 million in the lottery, didn't have ID, and had his girlfriend cash the ticket… who then took the money and ghosted him. We also talk about the dude who got his amputated leg cooked into tacos for his friends, and how Mad Dog 20/20 is now being sold in cans. Ric Flair allegedly keeps getting kicked out of Tampa bars for getting drunk and crapping himself, and somehow we end up talking about Beijing Bikinis, lie detector relationship tests, and an orangutan who used to escape his zoo enclosure just to throw rocks at another ape.Check out our upcoming events, social media, and merch sale at the link below https://linktr.ee/GFP Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/show/7viuBywVXF4e52CHUgk1i5 Produced by Lane Media https://www.lanemediapgh.com/
In this bonus episode, The Spark, our founding editor Katy Cowan reunites with Kenny Gravillis for a more playful, off-the-cuff chat that lifts the lid on the personality behind the creative powerhouse. With the serious stuff out of the way, it's time to talk rules, rituals and ridiculous snacks. Kenny shares the one design rule he tries not to break (but sometimes does) and how his relationship with creativity has evolved from being a perfectionist to embracing a more open, collaborative approach with his team. There's also a loving tribute to St. Lucia, where he escapes to reset and recharge; a flashback to his pool hustling days in the Bronx; and an unexpected comfort found in a dog named Hero, who really needs to stop biting people's feet. We also hear about his favourite funeral song, the word he never wants to hear again (bandwidth), and the oversized bag of Fruit Pastilles that didn't survive the first half of Mission Impossible. And yes, there's a Tom Cruise story... because, of course, there is. This season is proudly sponsored by the School of Communication Arts.
It's Season 8 Premiere Time, BABY!!! Who would have thunk it, but we are eight summers deep and still crane kicking our way through podlife! We chat it up about baby Ralph Macchio, Chuck Norris rumors, the origins of the fight-ending crane kick, and so much more. Ty does some geeking out on the different forms of martial arts, while Rach admires his TWO yellow belts. Will she love this movie? Does it have enough heart? Are the fighting montages too amazing for her eyeballs? Tune in and find out!

"Kneel before Zod!" Not even a "please." Movie villains were rude back in the '80s. And Zod, Ursa, Non and Lex Luthor were no exception. Send us a textWhat kid didn't fantasize about making a spaceship and hurling themselves into the stars? We sure did. We also remember loving this movie back in the day because we saw kids just like us accomplish our dreams on the big screen or living room screen, depending on when you saw it. But we haven't seen this movie since the 90s, so we're a tad skeptical. Starring a very young Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix and directed by Joe Dante, we can't wait to "Explore" this movie. Get it?Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
It is HoseNose's pick for Movie Night and he is choosing the 1985 comedy "Brewster's Millions" starring Richard Pryor and John Candy. We discuss the movie, the magic of these 2 comedy geniuses and how we would spend 30 million dollars. #80smovies #richardpryor #moviereview #80s #genx #generationx #podcast
This week we're back talking 1980s films and we're back talking David Lynch (!!) as Mark, Paul and I discuss the late director's classic film noir, 'Blue Velvet'. A film we love- I think this is one of the best of the decade TBH- but find scarily relatable. (I even get to break out the censor sound which I haven't done in quite some time.....)
This week we are joined by comedian Danielle Radford to talk about the classic 80s teen movie Teen Witch, about a teenager who is also a witch!Tune in next week when our movie will be... Send us a textDo you remember Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure from 89? We do, and we remember loving it. We remember the stupid surfer phrases that annoyed the crap out of our parents. We remember the Step-Mom jokes. We remember Napoleon, Socrates, and Billy the Kid. We also remember that we have not seen this movie since the last century. So go back in time with us as we watch Bill and Ted go back in time for what we hope is still "A Most Excellent Adventure." Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
Sorry about the very poor audio quality. On the latest episode of the podcast, Doug invents square-dancing partners and Baywatch cast members, Jamie's got real problems with Elliott's outfit choices, and we both agree that the government in this movie and in most aspects of real life is a big problem. Get a stained glass window installed in your gigantic closet, don't worry if beers go missing when you only have unattended children in the house, and join us as we absolutely beat the hell of the beloved classic, E.T.!E.T. is a 1982 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Henry Thomas, Drew Berrymore, Dee Wallace, Robert Macnaughton, C. "My mother told me never to do this." When are we going to listen to our moms, people? The 1986 cult classic, The Hitcher, not only put the fear of hitchhikers in us, but also the fear of cops, German Shepherds, and even french fries. Rutger Hauer and C. Thomas Howell share the front seat of this dark thrillride with more than one gross-out moment. But now, decades of defeated horror villains later, what's left to be afraid of? Is there any suspense to be had when you can just drive away? And are the cops in this movie more vicious than the hitchhiker? The Old Roommates thumb through it all with their middle-aged lens on high alert. Join them for a ... side-splitting conversation. Old Roommates can be reached via email at oldroommatespod@gmail.com.
