We're heading out for a road trip with two ladies who are doing it for themselves! Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon star as the titular leads in this 1991 road trip crime drama from director Ridley Scott. When a girls' weekend getaway goes awry, a waitress and housewife must dodge the law and would-be lovers to make a true getaway. But when their luck runs out, they must take a leap of faith. Co-starring Harvey Keitel, Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Brad Pitt, the film won multiple awards, including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for writer Callie Khouri. Hardware (1990), Death Machine (1994), and Event Horizon (1997) The 1990s are often thought of as a decade of dread for horror fans—not because of what was on the screen, but because nothing good supposedly came out of it. Or at least, that's the typical response. But as we continue down the path to Discover the Horror, we're starting to realize that what we remember about the past isn't always accurate—whether it's based on our own memories or what we were told. When you really dig into those ten years, there's actually a lot of great stuff that came out—even just here in the U.S. And when you look beyond to international horror, it gets even better. Browse through the list and you're bound to say, “Oh yeah, I forgot about that one.” In this episode, we decided to tackle that decade and picked three titles that, as it turns out, share some very similar themes. And we think all three are well worth watching. Films mentioned in this episode: Alien (1979), Aliens (1986), Batman Returns (1992), The Blair Witch Project (1999), The Boneyard (1991), Braindead (1992), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), Candyman (1992), Cronos (1992), Day of the Dead (1985), Death Machine (1994), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Descent (2005), Dr. Giggles (1992), Dust Devil (1992), Event Horizon (1997), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Faces of Death (1978), Freeway (1996), Goodfellas (1990), Godzilla (1998), Gravity (2013), Halloween (1978), Halloween H20 (1998), Hardware (1990), Hellraiser (1987), Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), High Tension (2003), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), Judge Dredd (1995), Jurassic Park (1993), Lord of Illusion (1995), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mimic (1997), Misery (1990), The Mummy (1999), Nightbreed (1990), Pulp Fiction (1994), The Princess Bride (1987), Reign of Fire (2002), The Resurrected (1991), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Return to Splatter Farm (2020), Ringu (1998), Scream (1996), Scream 2 (1997), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Star Wars (1977), Thelma & Louise (1991), The Thing (1982), Valentine (2001), Warning Sign (1985), Willow (1988)

Welcome back to another edition of the Video Store Podcast. This week, get your BFFs together for a movie marathon focusing on Film Friendships. I've selected four films for the staff picks wall, highlighting my favorite best buds and friendships forged in fire. I also answer the age-old question, “Can men and women really be friends?” Let's dig in. Stand by Me (1986)First up is Rob Reiner's 1986 coming-of-age classic, Stand by Me. Starring Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Keifer Sutherland, Stand by Me is a classic focusing on the friendship between four boys growing up in the summer of 1959. Do you still have friends like you did when you were twelve? I hope so. Gather your besties on the couch for this one. Now and Then (1995)Next is the 1995 film Now and Then. I return to my twelve-year-old self whenever I watch this film, not just because I relate to the young leads of the film, but because of the deep and sincere friendship that is the film's through-line. Starring Christina Ricci, Rosie O'Donnell, Thora Birch, Melanie Griffith, Gaby Hoffman, Demi Moore, Ashleigh Aston Moore, and Rita Wilson, these ladies deliver a powerful dramatic, and comedic performance. Get your best gals together for a great film with a great soundtrack. When Harry Met Sally… (1989)Yes, I know what you're thinking: a rom-com in a movie about friendship? You read that right. When Harry Met Sally… addresses the age-old question, “Can men and women be friends?” Well, I've got thoughts on the matter and you'll have to listen to this week's show to find out why I've selected this one for a podcast on film friendship. Producer and writer Callie Khouri takes us on the journey from script to screen of the beloved film Thelma and Louise. Equal parts inspiration (the story in its entirety just popped into her head one day), great timing (Ridley Scott was suddenly available to direct), and integrity (Callie refused to change the ending regardless of studio notes), the film is a remarkable success story that marks the revolutionary reinvention of female characters on screen. Go behind the vein-popping sophomore feature from writer/director Rose Glass, Love Lies Bleeding, with this special Q&A! Remember: "ONLY LOSERS QUIT," So don't skip out on this episode like most folks do leg day! The film is a quirky and queer neo-noir full of greasy mullets, guns, and girl-on-girl with brief interludes of body horror. Its sexual fluidity, spunky attitude, and cosmic edge recall the films of Gregg Araki mixed with the Wachowski's Bound, Ridley Scott's Thelma & Louise, Darren Aronofsky's Requiem For A Dream, and David Lynch's Lost Highway. It's a strange cinematic cocktail of sex and violence whose mileage will vary from viewer to viewer.
Judy, Judy, Judy! We're just mad about Judy Reyes. You Might Know Her From Birth/Rebirth, Claws, Scrubs, The Horror of Dolores Roach, Smile, Bringing out the Dead, One Day at a Time, and Devious Maids. We talk to Judy all about her Indie Spirit-nominated turn in the indie horror Birth/Rebirth which is a little Frankenstein, a little Thelma & Louise, a little Whatever Happened to Baby Jane–we highly recommend it! Judy takes us through the psychology of playing a grieving mother, acting opposite a child and a pig, and grounding the horror elements. Then, we dig deep into her oeuvre from playing Carla Espinosa for eight seasons on Scrubs to playing gay as Quiet Ann (no -e) in one of the best female ensembles on television on Claws. All that plus, coming in to elevate a horror flick like Smile, headlining the candy-coated Marc Cherry/Eva Longoria dark comedy Devious Maids, and forming a community with other Latina actors in this horrific (we hate but love it) industry. Oscar-winning actress, mother, championship archer, film festival director, memoirist, founder of the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media…Geena Davis has many hats but wears them lightly. The star of such enduring films as Beetlejuice, A League of their Own, and Thelma & Louise is a cut-up at heart, as Leonard and Jessie quickly learned. It's easy to see how she has accomplished so much, especially in the area of female representation in media. She's smart and talented but also endearing…and happy to talk about the people she's worked with (from Penny Marshall to Tim Burton) as well as her history as a creator of whimsical inventions.

Any biography of Stephen Tobolowsky must mention, and possibly right at the beginning, his performance as Ned Ryerson, the annoying insurance salesman in Groundhog Day. But that's far from the only big credit in Stephen's IMDb page, which also includes films like Memento and Thelma & Louise. Long before he was the hugely successful actor he is today, Stephen was just another guy trying to get by in New York and that's where he met The Most Boring Man in the World, working the afternoon shift at a local bar. Yo we're back… This episode we opened the show speaking with Mrs. Thelma Hubbard as she lays out her platform and what qualifies for the District 4 School Board seat. After that the crew gets to it.. we discuss “For All The Dogs”, Drake Vs Joe Budden, Big election news locally, 67 Clothing opening downtown. And more you don't want to miss this episode.
Our guest, the hilarious stand-up and writer Mia Pinchoff, picked perhaps the film people think of when they think of feminist films - “Thelma & Louise.” This was an over-do rewatch for Devin and Andrea, and a first time watch for Mia. This was a lively and engaging conversation about not only our takeaways and impressions of the film, but the massive impact this film still has today. Mia and Andrea are long time friends, and we were so thrilled she joined us to talk about rom-coms, thrillers, about Devin's dog, about “meat flowers” (which you'll just have to tune in to see what that is and how we got there) - this was such a fun chat :) Our women in film history highlighted, appropriately, the Geena Davis Institute On Gender In Media and the groundbreaking filmmaker Dorothy Arzner, who, among her many accomplishments, also invented the first boom microphone! Check out Mia's website miapinchoff.com for upcoming show dates or follow her on instagram @miapinchoff - trust us, go check out her stand-up, this lady is a petite powerhouse of comedy and her shows do not disappoint! A special new podcast subset featuring Nate and his father. "My Dad & the Movies" is a monthly series where Nate and his father, George, discuss a movie of his father's choice, maybe a favorite or a formative work that made him the cinephile he is, and father and son can talk about their shared love of the movies. It's season two and the seventh episode looks at the feminist roadtrip with one of the most famous endings in the last 30 years of cinema, 1991's "Thelma & Louise." Does it hold up and how eye-opening was this for its time? Available on Spotify and Apple
It's time for another movie review episode and this week's theme is Buddy Movies! Justin jumps in the car for a road-trip to Mexico with his review of Thelma & Louise (7:31). Then Kayla heads to Aspen with a briefcase to review Dumb & Dumber (32:02). As always, we end with our SOTW (47:23).
The Secret Movie Club Team (Connor Lloyd Crews, Edwin Gomez, Daniel Ott, and Craig Hammill) returns with some tasty comfort food movies that'll make you feel warm inside! Craig recounts the way the ending of Thelma & Louise made him feel as a kid. Daniel doesn't mind sitting with Jim Jarmusch's Paterson. Connor is somehow comforted by the Saw franchise. And there's the main event, The Trial of Edwin Gomez, where the Team tries to understand what compelled Edwin to watch Cameron Crowe's We Bought a Zoo five times in two months!
Buckle up and don't look back, it's Thelma & Louise from 1991! Is this the greatest movie of all time? Which two actors were previously engaged prior to filming? Welcome to the Munsons at the Movies podcast. Each episode we delve into the filmography and impact of a randomly selected actor. In this episode, we explore the career of Geena Davis. Best known for her roles as Thelma in Thelma & Louise (1991), Dottie in A League of their Own (1992) and Veronica in The Fly (1986), Davis had a stranglehold on Hollywood for a stretch in the 80s and 90s. Joined once again by Michael Van De Voort, we discuss her amazingly resilient IMDb Star Meter, her surprising archery skills, the foundation she created for studying gender representation on-screen in Hollywood, her incredible transformation from mannequin to Oscar winner, and pepper in facts from her memoir: Dying of Politeness. How does she rank on the Munson Meter? Listen to find out.

Sylvia and Kristen have some thoughts upon their return from being co-presenters at a conference with the LA Women Police Officers and Associates. They talk about the messages they shared and what they hoped resonated with the 800 women "and a sprinkle of dudes" who were there. Kristen big-times us with a reference to an "Ivy League study" that shows the number one regret people have at the end of their lives is that they were not true to themselves but were beholden to the expectations of others. They talk about how important it is not to compete with others - that you should be competing with yourself, leading to another gem of a quote from Sylvia: "Comparison is the thief of joy." You'll even hear how Kristen manages her response to a social media troll.

CONTENT WARNING This episode contains extended conversations about sexual assault. Unfortunately, due to professional and personal commitments, we've decided to conclude Snails & Oysters – for now at least. It's a series finale* because we both love this project and hope to bring it back one day. Until then, we've chosen a barnstormer of a movie to go out on: 1991's crime dramedy Thelma & Louise, starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis as the titular best friends, accomplices, and doomed lovers. ***TRIGGER WARNING*** The topic of SA is discussed during our conversation about the 1991 Oscar-winning feminist crime film THELMA & LOUISE. SA is a major element of this film and is unavoidable in discussing the film's themes and deeper meaning, so if this is a triggering subject for you, maybe skip this episode. We'll understand. :) However, if you're willing to come along on a ride with us to discuss trauma, sexism, and major turning points we've had in our own lives. It's certainly a wild episode. Betsy and Liz look back at THELMA & LOUISE
I am obsessed with today's guest and I'm not even going to pretend otherwise. Geena Davis, the star of such seminal movies as Tootsie, Beetlejuice, Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own and the underrated classic, The Long Kiss Goodnight, TURNED UP AT MY ACTUAL HOUSE to record a witty, warm and fascinating conversation.*We talk about her feelings of imposter syndrome and self-doubt in the early days of her career, the fact that her failure as a model led to her first film role alongside Dustin Hoffman (who gave her incredible advice on how to defend herself against the amorous advances of her male co-stars) and the revelation of being diagnosed with ADD in her 40s. Along the way, we touch on height (she's 6ft! A tall woman like me!), the #MeToo movement, representation, almost becoming an Olympic archer, being an older mother and the seismic impact her friendship with Susan Sarandon had on Davis's life. I can't wait for you all to listen.*yes, she met my ginger cat Huxley and they got along famously.--Geena Davis's gloriously warm and ironic memoir, Dying of Politeness, is out now: https://www.waterstones.com/book/dying-of-politeness/geena-davis/9780008508111--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted and produced by Elizabeth Day.
