After only a couple hours of investigating, the police has one suspect in mind for her untimely death: her husband, Ryan Widmer. Ep 01: On season 2 of Direct Appeal, we examine the murder conviction of Ryan Widmer for the death of his wife, Sarah Whitmer. Looking at the evidence that was presented, that which was not, and the evidence that may have seemed insignificant at the time, we form our own conclusion about Ryan Widmer's Guilt. It was night like any other. August 11th, 2008, Ryan and Sarah Whitmer married just four months. Were in the beginning-stages of building their new life together. Sarah wasn't feeling well that day, so she decided to go upstairs after dinner to take a bath. Ryan stayed downstairs in the living room a little while longer, and continued to watch the game. Sometime after 10:00 PM Ryan was ready to call it a night, so he headed upstairs to get ready for bed. When he opened the door to the upstairs bathroom, he walked in to find a terrifying scene. Sarah was in the bathtub and didn't appear to be breathing. A panicked Ryan called 911. Ryan and Sarah Widmer were twenty-something newlyweds living in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Ryan worked as a sports marketer for the Warren County Convention and Visitor's Bureau and cheered for the Red Sox and the Bengals; Sarah loved her work as a dental hygienist. Until one Monday night in August of 2008, Sarah wasn't feeling well. She had been plagued by sleep issues and migraines for years. She talked on the phone with her best friend, and, at around 10 pm, told Ryan she was going up to take a bath.Half an hour later, Ryan Widmer found his young bride dead in the tub. He called 911 and the paramedics arrived within minutes, but there was nothing they could do to save her. She had died at the age of 25. Even though this horrible tragedy should have been an open-and-shut case, an unimaginable accident...it wasn't. The finger was pointed at Ryan Widmer, her husband, as her killer. What followed was years and years of investigations, a case like no one in the Cincinnati, Ohio area had seen before, and three murder trials in total, to prove Ryan's innocent or his guilt. And the outcome was nothing resembling what anyone would have guessed...Show Notes:https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/submerged-janice-hisle/1132362072

It was nearly 11 p.m. when Ryan Widmer called 911. He told the dispatcher, “My wife. She fell asleep in the bathtub, I think. I was downstairs. I just came up here and she was laying face down in the bathtub.” He said that his wife, Sarah, fell asleep in the bathtub “all the time.” Ryan drained the bathtub and removed Sarah from it, then began performing CPR. Paramedics showed up a short while later, but were unable to revive Sarah. Later, questions emerged about how exactly Sarah Widmer died. On August 11, 2008, Ryan Widmer called 911 to report that his wife Sarah had possibly drowned in their bathtub. Ryan said he drained the tub and remove his wife from it. The paramedics tried to save Sarah Widmer, but she was beyond help. The coroner ruled her death as a drowning. But did her husband drown her or did she suffer from an unknown medical condition that caused her death? The police quickly assumed Ryan had murdered his wife. He was arrested and indicted quickly. At the time, many armchair detectives and the media portrayed Ryan Widmer as a killer. But did he really kill his wife as the police claimed? Is it possible that this young woman could have had a seizure before drowning? Most people think it’s impossible. But when you look into Sarah’s past, you begin to realize it was a possibility. She had previously fallen asleep in the bathtub. Co workers said she would take breaks and sleep in her car.For this episode, I spoke to former Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Janice Hisle. Ryan Widmer. August 11, 2008. Morrow, Ohio. A man called 911 to report finding his wife deceased in their bathtub. He said that she had gone upstairs to take a bath, but that she frequently fell asleep and was always worried about her drowning. Detectives would get permission to search the residence and would find apparent contradictions between the man's story and the evidence at the scene. Just hours later, his wife was pronounced dead after nearly an hour of resuscitation attempts and he was arrested. His story was picked up by Dateline and people around the country voiced their support for him after learning about the case and not believing that a crime had even occurred. Prosecutors were so certain of his guilt that they would try him three times to finally get a conviction and put him away. For Ryan Widmer and his supporters, though, the fight is not over. They say that Sarah Widmer's death was accidental and that Ryan had nothing to do with it. When it comes to controversial convictions, this true crime case is one of the most polarizing ones that we have ever discussed.
