Nevin Galmarini (37) Olympia-Silber in Sotschi, Gold in Pyeongchang.
Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 67 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys are joined by Dave Giannini, Editor-In-Chief of InSession Film, to discuss the final film in their Terrence Malick series, A Hidden Life (2019). The time has come for the Malick series to come to an end, and it is ending with yet another beautiful look to the past by the director after years of making personal films about the present. In taking a journey back to the past, the director was able to search into a man's personal, religious reasoning for not wanting to go to war for the Nazis. Shot beautifully cinematographer Jörg Widmer, Malick has created another masterpiece of epic, poetic masterpiece, contrary to many who thought it was just another Malick film; this one is just as special as the rest. Ryan, Jay, and Dave break down their relationship with the film, Malick's stance on religion, the film's beautiful score, the excellent performance from August Diehl, give their final thoughts on the series, their final Malick rankings, and announce their next series they will be doing starting next week. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 2h26m.

The Ming-Qing transition was an extremely chaotic time in Chinese history. Millions died of warfare, pestilence, or starvation, and millions more were displaced. Yet despite all these issues, this was also a period of cultural production, which has often been overlooked as people focus on the wars, famine, and climate change that pervaded this period. In this episode, I speak with Professor Lynn Struve about the literary pursuits of men and women and the overall intellectual landscape in the Late Ming and the Early Qing Contributors Lynn Struve Lynn Struve is an emeritus professor of history and an emeritus professor of East Asian languages and cultures at Indiana University Bloomington. Her research interests include traditional Chinese history, 17th century political and intellectual history, East-West comparative thought, and Chinese reference and source materials. Over the course of her career, she has published widely, particularly on the period of the Ming-Qing transition, and has received numerous awards. Her representative works include Voices from the Ming-Qing Cataclysm: China in Tigers' Jaws, The Southern Ming, 1644-1662, The Ming-Qing Conflict: A Historiography and Source Guide, and, more recently, The Dreaming Mind and the End of the Ming World, which was recently awarded best overall book in Ming studies published between 2019 and 2022 by the Society for Ming Studies. Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. A teenager named Abraham Lincoln was once part of the crew of a packet boat bringing goods downriver to New Orleans. As they approached the city they camped on the river banks up shore from New Orleans. There were rough characters who worked along the river. That night, young Lincoln and his group were attacked and beaten up. Fortunately, for history's sake, he survived and made it to New Orleans where he had another experience that also favored history's sake. He saw the city's slave markets and was appalled. What he saw in New Orleans influenced his attitude about slavery that would shape his political career. Author and professor Ted Widmer will moderate a panel, including New Orleanians Richard Campanella (who has written about the above Lincoln story) and the author C. W. Goodyear, titled “Hail to the Chief, New Orleans and the American Presidency.” Goodyear is the author of a new book about James Garfield. Widmer joins Louisiana Life Executive Editor Errol Laborde, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot, to talk about presidents who spent time in the city either earlier before their time in office or as incumbents. It is a fascinating conversation a president whose reputation was made in New Orleans.
Hosts Melissa Loble and Ryan Lufkin visit with Texas A&M University's Dr. Jocelyn Widmer and student Ellie Richter about how important mental health is and how technology can help support teachers and students. Through Richter and Widmer's efforts, Texas A&M students now have access to a mental health button within Canvas. Widmer has worked in digital and online education for more than 15 years, most recently as the assistant provost for academic innovation and online learning at Texas A&M University. Prior to her role at TAMU, Widmer held joint faculty appointments in the Colleges of Architecture and Public Health at both the University of Florida and Virginia Tech. With global experience across 18 countries, she is recognized for her teaching and research that integrate technology to build digital literacy capacity in low-resource communities around the world. Richter is a history, philosophy, and pre-law student in her senior year at Texas A&M University. She has served one of the nation's largest student bodies as a member of the TAMU Student Government Association since her freshman year. She has been instrumental in bringing student-driven academic concerns to the university leadership to effect change. In her role as Vice President of Academic Affairs of SGA she championed a major OER initiative that is now supported by TAMU's Office of the Provost, saving students millions of dollars annually. The mental health button in Canvas was driven by Richter's passion for linking existing barriers to student success with innovative solutions. Her steadfast leadership that champions student success initiatives has led to transformational changes to academic policies and practices at TAMU that will have lasting impacts on Aggies well into the future. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/instructurecast/message
