If we recognize that God’s “hidden” plan in our lives - through struggle and privilege, sin and faithfulness, joy and regret - is to paint a picture of His Son while shaping our character, it will give us the strength to be faithful through any situation.

The real power of love that allows relationships to thrive is forgiveness
We all feel guilt and oftentimes remain in guilt for far too long. Our sermon today looks at the end of the Joseph story in Genesis 50 and why we all need a goat to help with our guilt.
This one sentence forms a theme of the Joseph story and touches nearly all the characters in Genesis: "you intended to do evil…God intended it for good." Only time, faith, wise discernment of events will tell us whether the things which so pain us one day we will another day interpret as God using for good. Rev. Larry Hayward preaches on the Twenty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, concluding a sermon series on Genesis. The Scripture lesson is Genesis 50:15-21.

Chances are, you have some FAMILY stuff going on in your family. Stuff you take with you to college. Stuff you bring with you into your marriage. Stuff that lingers into your adulthood. That's because what happens in ONE generation often repeats itself in the next. BUT. But God wants to do something in your life that not only changes you (for the better) but changes your family tree. Our family of origin influences who we are today, which is why it's important to GO BACK in order to GO FORWARD.

Joseph's brothers fear that after their father died that Joseph still had a root of bitterness towards them and "pay them back" 'for what they had done to him.

Most people don’t like adversity. We usually prefer ease and tranquility. We all know it is not realistic to expect this all the time, so it’s important to ask questions about how to deal with adversity. If there was ever an expert on living with adversity, it was Joseph.

Today we begin week #3 of our Church Wide Initiative, “Emotionally Healthy Spirituality”, and our focus is on the past. How we deal with the wounds and hurts of our past have a significant impact on our emotional health. Joseph’s life story is an amazing testimony of how God’s grace enabled someone to move beyond the pain and hurts of the past and fully embrace God’s plan for their life. If you’re unfamiliar with the story I would encourage you to take sometime this week and read Joseph’s life story (Genesis 37-50). To say Joseph had a rough past would be a tremendous understatement. He was hated by his brothers, sold into slavery twice, punished for doing the right thing, endured a long imprisonment as an innocent man, forgotten by those he helped, yet through it all he continually made choices that allowed him to move beyond the hurts and wounds of the past. He chose to be real and acknowledge the pain, as opposed to living in denial. He trusted God’s sovereignty – even in the midst of pain and uncertainty. His relationship with God and unwavering confidence in God’s sovereignty enabled him to release those who had offended him. He rejected the lies told to him by those who had hurt him and instead embraced God’s truth for his life. He refused to wallow in self-pity and sorrow and instead partnered with God to be a blessing to others. These choices enabled Joseph to not just survive and get through life, but rather thrive and fulfill God’s purposes for his life. Emotionally healthy spirituality requires us to deal with past hurts in a healthy way. With God’s help, we can make the same choices Joseph made and move towards emotional health.

Ever wonder how to forgive someone? Do we need to forget what that person(s) has done to us? Pastor Dave shares from God's word how we are to forgive.
I can suffer knowing that God is with me and that everything I go through has the potential to bring Him glory.
Joseph reassures his brothers that he will not take revenge. It was really God, not them, who sent him to Egypt. God made good come out of the brothers' evil act.
