Principle 5: Face to face is best We need to work hard to create physical face to face connections with people. Three benefits of meeting face to face: 1. Eating together - Something happens when we break bread together! Jesus did it all the time! o "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" Mark 2:16 o When they got there, they found breakfast waiting for them - fish cooking over a charcoal fire, and some bread. "Bring some of the fish you've just caught," Jesus said. "Now come and have some breakfast!" John 21:9 2. Touch - There is power in physical touch o Washing feet o Children in his arms o Touching lepers 3. The presence of Jesus o Where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them. Matthew 18:20 Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. Hebrews 10:25 o The phrase "our meeting together" is the same the one Jesus used "gather" When the people of Jesus are in physical proximity to one another...watch out for Jesus. He is right there. And when Jesus is in the room all kinds of things can happen! 4 Ways to Be Face to Face: 1. Go out of your way to spend time together. 2. Join a Rooted group (https://gracechurch.us/rooted) 3. Pray together 4. Come to church every weekend rather than watching online So there it is, the good life awaits us in the digital world. But approach technology with caution and purpose and balance and do it together...face to face.
How Do I Forgive Myself? Matthew 26:75 Suddenly, Jesus’ words flashed through Peter’s mind: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny three times that you even know me.” And he went away, weeping bitterly. (NLT) 1. Disconnects you from God 2. Depresses you 3. Dominates your mind 4. Destroys your progress 3 Requirements to Forgive Yourself 1. Forgiving yourself begins with understanding how God has forgiven you Mark 16:5-7 When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, 6 but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth,[b] who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. 7 Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.” (NLT) 4 Characteristics of God’s Forgiveness 1. Forgives instantly 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV) 2. Forgives completely 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV) 3. Forgives repeatedly 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV) 4. Forgives freely Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. (NIV) 2. Leave your baggage with Jesus John 21:7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. (NIV) 1 Peter 2:24 He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed. (NLT) 3. Move forward to what God has next

WHO IS THIS MAN, JESUS? This is still the central question Luke's constantly bringing us to. Who is Jesus? In Luke 9:18-20, Jesus asks Peter who he thinks he is. Peter's reply: "God’s Messiah." Many in our time see Jesus as merely a great moral teacher. He had some wonderful things to say, but he is a "god". But this brings us to a problem that I will let C. S. Lewis, author of Mere Christianity explain: "I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. ... Now it seems to me obvious that He was neither a lunatic nor a fiend: and consequently, however strange or terrifying or unlikely it may seem, I have to accept the view that He was and is God."* Lewis brings us to the same intersection Jesus brought Peter. We must decide who we believe Jesus to be. * Lewis, C. S., Mere Christianity, London: Collins, 1952, pp. 54–56. (In all editions, this is Bk. II, Ch. 3, "The Shocking Alternative.")
"Hope" has varying definitions. From blind optimism to wishful thinking. So what does the Bible say about Hope? How does Hope effect the follower of Jesus? Check out this weeks sermons as we go through Romans 8, & define what "Hope" is for the follower of Christ.
Notice the terms that Paul uses in the text about every Christian's identity: - no longer strangers or foreigners - fellow citizens with the saints - members of the household of God - joined together as a part of a holy temple whose cornerstone is Jesus - being built together in Him into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit God always designed Christians to participate in the life of the Church because Christians ARE the Church. You were not saved to be a lone-ranger Christian, on a spiritual island of just you and God, in isolation from other believers. You were saved out of your sin and into a family. Instead of seeing church life as just another ball to juggle in life (like kid's activities, job responsibilities, family schedules, leisure time, etc), it would be helpful to look at it as a wheel. The hub of the wheel is the starting point for every spoke in our life. You can’t drop your identity with the Church any more than you can drop your identity with Christ. Your identity is wrapped up in Jesus and the church. Consistent participation in the body of Christ is not legalism, and making a habit of missing church is not Christian freedom. “Although a person can initially come to God without the church, no one can stay with God while rejecting the church. To come to Christ is to love his (very messy and not-yet-glorified) bride.” -Rick Shenk

WHO IS THIS MAN, JESUS? Throughout Luke's gospel, this has been the central question, asked in various ways, over and over again. You have asked this question, too, haven't you? Who is Jesus? Is he just another teacher, a prophet, something more? THOSE WHO KNEW HIM BEST The disciples had been so impressed by his teaching that they left everything they knew to follow him, study him, and slowly become more like him. It was not long before they started seeing things that would raise this question in their hearts, too, and when he calmed a storm at sea by the simple command, "Peace! Be still," they asked, "“Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” In Luke 9, you find their answer...

Hope Fellowship Church Mar 3 – 9, 2019 ========== Acts Part 3: Barnabas or Ananias? The Church... Not a human organization, not a building formed by human hands... But the workmanship of God...This has always been His idea. ========== The early church was persistently devoted to… · Apostles teachings · Fellowship · Communion · Prayer Acts 4:32-35 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. Acts 3:13-16 The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, the God of our fathers, glorified his servant Jesus, whom you delivered over and denied in the presence of Pilate, when he had decided to release him. But you denied the Holy and Righteous One, and asked for a murderer to be granted to you, and you killed the Author of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this we are witnesses. And his name—by faith in his name—has made this man strong whom you see and know, and the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all. Acts 4:4 But many of those who had heard the word believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand. “Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit,” Acts 4:7-12 And when they had set them in the midst, they inquired, "By what power or by what name did you do this?" Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, "Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today concerning a good deed done to a crippled man, by what means this man has been healed, let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by him this man is standing before you well. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." The church was “clothed in power from on high,” they had all things in common and they were fiercely committed to one another. Acts 4:36-37 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus, sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. Barnabas Two effects of believing in Jesus: · Our hearts are loosened in our relationships to things. · Our hearts are tightened in our relationships to people. Acts 5:1-11 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet. But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God." When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much." And she said, "Yes, for so much." But Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out." Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things. 1. Ananias wants to look like Barnabas. In the midst of the commonality of the church we discover hypocrisy. Definition of hypocrisy: Who and what is Ananias? Acts 5:4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God." How do we become hypocrites? a) We forget what the gospel teaches us about who we’ve been, who we are and what responsibility we have to God. Colossians 1:21-22 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, We are in process! Ananias does not ask God to change his heart to one of generosity. Instead, Ananias thinks, “Oh I will just do what Barnabas did.” Acts 5:3-4 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God." God is not only pleased with the final product of our lives, He is just as pleased with the process of our lives. b) We lack gospel relationships that “out us” in love. The myth of gospel relationships is that our faith is a private faith. Mark 9:23-25 And Jesus said to him, "'If you can'! All things are possible for one who believes." Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, "I believe; help my unbelief!" And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, "You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again." 2. How do I address the hypocrisy of my life? Acts 5:5, Acts 5:11 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things. · God means for His people to fear hypocrisy. I hate the sin that harms me. · We are to walk daily in what God has said to be true about us. · We come to an understanding that our faith is not a private faith, we need one another. · We should confess to God and each other that we need help. Have you ever let the reality of your sin sink in? Have you ever thought about how much God has forgiven you? What would you do without Jesus? Check out this weeks sermon as we look at the reality of what we deserve.

Hope Fellowship Church Nov 11 – 17, 2018 ========== James: Greed / Generosity James is a book of timeless wisdom for practical living. It tackles real issues and struggles, that we will face in life, like temptation, wisdom, self-control, anger, arrogance, suffering, and so much more. James challenges our character and calls us to action directed by our faith. James takes principles and makes them practical. ========== James 5:1-6 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you. This is not about money, it's about Lordship. James 5:1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 1. The purpose of life is not to retire. When you have your needs met seemingly by your own effort, it’s much harder to trust God. Luke 18:18-24 And a ruler asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.'" And he said, "All these I have kept from my youth." When Jesus heard this, he said to him, "One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me." But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, "How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! James 5:4 Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, are crying out against you, and the cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 2. Position should never matter more than People. 1 Timothy 6:6-10 But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs. James 5:5-6 You have lived on the earth in luxury and in self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous person. He does not resist you. 3. Ultimately people can’t resist you, but God will resist you. How dependent am I on God? Do I really trust Him to provide and take care of me? Have I surrendered my wealth to Him and told Him; do what you want, I want Jesus? Description: Jesus said to His followers that those who continue to believe in Him would do the same works/miracles that He did and and even greater ones. How would we be able to to do the same works as Jesus? Through the power of and relationship with Holy Spirit whom The Father gives to those who are born again. As we learn to walk in relationship with Jesus through the Holy Spirit, we will be able to do incredible things, bringing more of God’s kingdom to earth.
A serving church has to have 4 basic elements 1) Our thinking needs to be the same way as Jesus 2) We need to have the same love as Jesus, an Agape love 3) We need to be willing to go seek forgiveness from others, and be willing to forgive others 4) A serving church will have humility
