The season of Advent is one of preparation and expectant waiting. But I wonder how our expectations of the season shape our experience of it. I wonder if our expectations might actually limit the joy and wonder of what God desires for us.Maybe instead of holding tightly to our expectations—for ourselves, for others, even for God—we are invited to trust in God's purposes. To loosen our grip. To surrender. Our best-laid plans may fall apart. But if we have prepared our hearts—if we have released our expectations and our egos—we just might discover the truth proclaimed to Joseph:  God is with us.

John continues the story of Joseph, highlighting how God uses seasons of waiting to test trust and form faith. This week, Paul reflects on the miraculous arrival of Isaac in Genesis 21:1–7. Abraham and Sarah's long wait for a child is met with the faithfulness of God. As we continue our Heros of the Old Testament series, we consider how these powerful stories from Scripture speak into our modern faith journey.

This week in our Heros of the Old Testament series, Janet reflects on a turning point in Abraham's journey—Abraham: Running Scared, based on Genesis 12:10–20. After bravely leaving everything behind to follow God's call, Abraham faces a famine and travels to Egypt. But fear takes hold, and he makes a decision that risks both his integrity and his wife's safety. In this honest and thought-provoking passage, we're reminded that even people of great faith stumble. Yet even when we get it wrong, God remains faithful. This week's message invites us to reflect on the tension between fear and faith, and how grace can meet us in our weakest moments.

In a day when quick answers, overnight solutions, and canned responses are the hope and desire, God's plans often feel slow or non-existent. If it takes more than a few minutes or days to get direction and see results, we can feel like God doesn't care or isn't present. We want quick answers to questions like:What's my purpose? What should I do about the difficult relationships in my life?Life isn't fair. Why can't I get a solution to this unfair life?Enter the life of Joseph. A man who was given a dream by God as a teenager only to see his life move in the complete opposite direction of that dream. Where was God? What was God's plan? Is this still God's plan? These and many others could've easily plagued Joseph as he was sold into slavery, then accused of a crime he didn't commit, and confined to a prison cell. However, the Bible repeatedly says, God was with Joseph. But life wasn't following Joseph's dream or plan - or so it seemed. In this series we will discuss how to trust God's plan when it seems to be taking longer than expected and in directions you never intended. When God has a plan for life the only thing necessary is time for God's plan to come to complete fruition. God never left Joseph - God never leaves you. Through the life of Joseph we can learn how to see God in what feels like the detours to God's plan, we can learn to rely on God in the valleys of God's plan, and we can learn to trust God's plan.

Parish of Cove Podcast

Welcome to this week's reflection in our Heros of the Old Testament series, where we explore the lives and faith journeys of key figures from the Bible—Joseph, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Moses. Through their stories, we seek to understand how God worked through ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things, and what lessons we can apply to our own walk of faith. Over the past two weeks, we've been journeying through the life of Joseph. We began with Joseph the Dreamer (Genesis 37:1–11), reflecting on how God spoke to Joseph through dreams and planted purpose in him from a young age. Last week, in God With Us (Genesis 39), we saw God's presence with Joseph through betrayal and hardship, even as he was falsely accused and imprisoned. This week, Anne continues the story with Genesis 41:1–36, where Joseph is suddenly brought before Pharaoh to interpret a troubling dream. After years of obscurity, God opens a door no one else could. It's a pivotal moment that changes the course of Joseph's life—and that of an entire nation. Joseph's journey shows us that God opens doors at the right time, even when we've experienced long seasons of waiting. His story reminds us to remain faithful, to trust that God is preparing us behind the scenes, and to be ready when the opportunity comes. As we reflect on Joseph's experience, we ask ourselves: Where might God be at work in our waiting? How can we stay faithful and hopeful in seasons of uncertainty? Each week in this series, we delve into the lives of these Old Testament heros to discover how their faith, challenges, and obedience can guide and strengthen our own discipleship today.

We continue our series: Heros of the Old Testament, exploring the lives of Joseph, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Moses. This week, Gemma reflects on Joseph: God With Us, from Genesis 39. After being sold into slavery and taken far from home, Joseph finds himself in a foreign land, facing injustice and imprisonment. Yet, even in the darkest of times, God is with him. Joseph's story reminds us that God's presence isn't limited to the good times—it sustains us through difficulty, loss, and uncertainty. What might it look like for us to recognise God's presence in the middle of our own trials? Let's continue to learn from these faithful lives and grow together in trust and hope.#HerosOfTheOldTestament #BeingFamily #OneFamilyTwoHomes [audio mp3="https://parishofcove.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/sermons/20260611-Reflection.mp3"][/audio] [embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlJhvOZdGX4&live=1[/embedyt]

Scripture: Genesis 39In this message, we explore the life of Joseph and how God remained present even in the darkest seasons of his life. Though sold into slavery and falsely imprisoned, Joseph's story reminds us that God's silence is not His absence.Key Points:Family dysfunction doesn't disqualify God's purpose – Joseph's trials began with generational brokenness, yet God still had a plan.God's presence changes everything – Genesis 39:2-6 shows that the Lord was with Joseph and caused all he did to succeed, even in slavery.Favor follows faithfulness – Joseph excelled because of his integrity and diligence, not because of ideal circumstances.Temptation is relentless, but God provides a way out – Joseph resisted the advances of Potiphar's wife, modeling obedience even when it cost him.Sin undersells its consequences – Disobedience in the palace could have cost Joseph everything. Instead, he chose the hard path of righteousness.Victory begins with vigilance – Proverbs 14:16 and 22:3 remind us that wisdom avoids evil and takes refuge in God's truth.God is working even in waiting – Psalm 27:14, Psalm 130:5-6, and James 5:7-8 encourage us to trust God's timing. There are no coincidences in God's plan – What may look like setbacks were divinely orchestrated setups for Joseph's future role in saving a nation (Psalm 105:16-17).Main Truth: God is present in your prison, and His plan is unfolding—even when it feels like you're going backward.

Saints and theologians have taught that he was made holy before birth, like St. John the Baptist, and that he and Mary remained virgins in their marriage. This understanding also helps explain Mary's question at the Annunciation. The episode also highlights the many important titles God gave St. Joseph to guide and protect Jesus and Mary.

Thought for February 4th. “BUT THE LORD HARDENED PHARAOH'S HEART”

Christadelphians Talk

We thought about this for some time. How do we understand the references in today's ch. 10 of Exodus to the LORD hardening Pharaoh's heart.  (v.1,10,27)   Can God blame man for what God does – if that is the way to understand this?  Notice how Moses conveys the message of the LORD (i.e. Yahweh/Jehovah) to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD, the God of the Hebrews; how long will you refuse to humble yourself before me?” [v.3] Pharaoh refused to recognise the power of the one and only God.  In the time of Joseph God's power had been fully recognised as a result of the 7 years of famine and plenty.  Then we read in Exodus 1 v.8 “Now there arose a new king over Egypt that did not know Joseph” and the situation changed.  To restore the spirit of knowing and fearing the only real God was surely part of the purpose of God in sending the plagues.  God saw to it that a Pharaoh was “raised up” whose attitude and pride would cause this to happen. We can see a modern parallel to this today.  When printing was invented, the first book printed in nearly every language was the Bible!  We are celebrating 400 years since the King James Version of the Bible was first printed.  Four Centuries ago there was a wonderful change in the attitudes of many people; the world became more spiritual; laws were influenced by the principles set out in the laws in the Bible.  The R.C. Church tried to resist this but the reformation movement, fed by the reading of the Bible, spread throughout the world.  People at last read for themselves what God had really done and said. The effect of this reformation movement came to and end during the 20th Century, now a whole generation has now arisen who largely do not know the Bible.  Sadly some read the Bible to get power and influence for themselves and distort what it says and trying to find in it things they want to believe.  The stage is set therefore, for God to bring another series of plagues on the earth, to show his power to Godless man, so that once again people will be aware of the true God, but it will require one last dramatic act of God to really cause them to wake up – and that surely will be the return of Christ to rule the earth.
