Harvest Church Knoxville Tim Atchley Jesus Christ God Grace
Notice the terms that Paul uses in the text about every Christian's identity: - no longer strangers or foreigners - fellow citizens with the saints - members of the household of God - joined together as a part of a holy temple whose cornerstone is Jesus - being built together in Him into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit God always designed Christians to participate in the life of the Church because Christians ARE the Church. You were not saved to be a lone-ranger Christian, on a spiritual island of just you and God, in isolation from other believers. You were saved out of your sin and into a family. Instead of seeing church life as just another ball to juggle in life (like kid's activities, job responsibilities, family schedules, leisure time, etc), it would be helpful to look at it as a wheel. The hub of the wheel is the starting point for every spoke in our life. You can’t drop your identity with the Church any more than you can drop your identity with Christ. Your identity is wrapped up in Jesus and the church. Consistent participation in the body of Christ is not legalism, and making a habit of missing church is not Christian freedom. “Although a person can initially come to God without the church, no one can stay with God while rejecting the church. To come to Christ is to love his (very messy and not-yet-glorified) bride.” -Rick Shenk

Burkina Faso is a french speaking country of 17 million people in West Africa. It is about half the size of Texas. In this densly packed country, there are 13 UPCI churches. Zack and Jen Sportsman are missionaries appointed to this work. Tonight, Bro. and Sis. Sportsman bring us details about their work in Burkina Faso as well as a timely message about listening to the whisper of God born of his own experience. The Whisper of God Our world and our culture is crowded with distractions and opportunities to focus our attention on other things. Technology and constant information updates can drown the small voice of God and what He has to say to us. We need to hear God speaking to us; not just in church, but as we go about our daily lives on our jobs, in schools and in the grocery stores. God uses us to reach people. God places people in our lives for a reason, and it is logical to believe that we are placed into other’s lives for a divine purpose. Bro. Sportsman shares a story of how he came to know the Lord by a divine encounter with a friend who listened to the small voice of God.

Many people say that they do not know how to pray. They need to be taught. When trying to learn how to pray, prayer itself is the best teacher. We can talk about prayer, but the best way to learn how to pray is to pray. Prayer is just word; simple language, but the worth of prayer is much more than simple words. Prayer connects us with a limitless supply of blessing from God. When we pray, it connects us to something greater than our sin, or someone's sin against us. Prayer connects us to forgiveness. Nothing releases our heart and life like forgiveness. The answer to life's failures is forgiveness. When we pray, we connect ourselves to that power. When we pray, it connects us to hope. Hope that not matter what our failures or mistakes may be, God provides a way out. Prayer connects us to the right kind of leadership in our lives. Prayer reveals to us that God is not afraid to be associated with our failure. People who are rich do not usually associate with poor people. However, the Lord of lords, and King of kings is not ashamed to identify with us. Prayer reminds us that God is approachable. Prayer affords us in our weakness, the opportunity to fellowship with His love and His holiness. Prayer will help keep us humble. We are reminded that we are all sinners. It reminds us to look at our own sins before we look at other people's sins. Prayer enables us to have more understanding, more tolerance of others and we have more patience with people. Through Jesus' teaching in this prayer, we learn: Let go, and let God Forget and move on We need our lives to be led. We learn to live an empowered life
For some when the subject of prayer comes up, they begin to get nervous. Some people do not feel that they know how to pray. They feel overwhelmed. Many are afraid to pray. Still others have forgotten about prayer due to the insecurities they feel about it and their abilities. When we fail to pray, we undermine the very foundation of our peace and the very strength of our life. Tonight Bro. Hughes comes with a mission to shed a light on prayer that we have not seen before. Other than the 23 Psalm, our text is one of the most recognized scriptures in the bible. Most people can quote the Lord's Prayer word for word. For many people, reciting these words from memory is the only praying they do. In truth, the Lord's prayer is a model of how we are to pray. The disciples were with Jesus through many miracles and wondrous events. They did not ask Him to teach them how to do these miracles. They did however, ask Him to teach them to pray. Because they knew that by knowing how to pray they could have the power to do the miraculous. In the Lord's prayer, he gave them a model to use in their own prayer. We know it as the Lord's Prayer, but in truth, it is the apostle's prayer. What He teaches is that the power of prayer is not in the words that are spoken, but in the pattern of thinking that happens when we are praying. When our thoughts begin to flow in the pattern of this prayer, it becomes powerful, transforming and renewing. Bro. Hughes notes that there are seven points to this prayer. Some theologians believe that there are six points. Seven is God's number and six is the number of man. Bro. Hughes notes that prayer is actually connecting God's world with man's world. So when we look at this prayer we should note the order of the prayer. Secondly, the prayer deals with the three essential needs of man. * Give us this day our daily bread * Bread is a present need * Prayer brings our present needs to God * Forgive us our trespasses * This is a past need, we need forgiveness for things that happen in the past. * Man people struggle because they hide their past rather than bring their past to God to deal with. * Lead us not into temptation * This is a future need * We leave the unknown in God's hands. Prayer is a ladder, and the key to prayer is knowing where to start. In the open in line, Jesus sets the stage: Our father which art in heaven. You begin in the heavens and work down. We don't start on the earth and drag it up. We must fill our mind with God first before we begin to pray. Four times in the opening of the prayer, Jesus directs us to God before he moves on. By focusing on God first, we reaffirm that He is in control and can handle anything that we may bring to Him. When we pray like Jesus taught the disciples, we gain perspective. When we start high, we can see the whole picture and understand that God sees the entire situation and has it under control. Prayer connects us to His name and His kingdom. We realize that if there is a kingdom, there is a plan to run that kingdom. This is more than just about us. There is a divine purpose and plan at work. When we pray, we begin to realize that we are part of a kingdom that has no end. The world will fade away, but God's kingdom and His plan will go on forever. Thy will be done. This is a prayer of submission. We understand that God is sufficient and that by submitting to His will, we are giving ourselves over to the One that has the plan and complete picture of situation.
If we are not careful, we look to our family to meet our deepest needs – this is something only God can do. When we expect our family to come through for us and meet our needs, we drain the joy out of our family circle. We have deep needs for security and significance – these were meant to be met by God, not our family (or anyone else). Learning to deal with expectations in faith (not demanding is key to having healthy, growing family relationships. My circle gets is filled with un-pleasantries when I… • Use others to meet my needs without considering them • Intend to draw my resources for living from them, not from God • Expect too much out of my spouse or children or siblings. Demanding that… o They make us feel okay about ourselves (if they criticize, then BOOM!) o Pump us up and feel important (and they don’t think much about us at all) Genuine faith helps me to give my expectations to God as something I desire and focus on refreshing others.
Psalms 135:7 The Winds of God -- The are “treasures” that God has for us in prayer. When you pray, things become eternal. And you begin to hold precious, those things that are eternal. All major moves of God are associated with the wind. John 3:8 Acts 2 Ezekiel 37:9 Zachariah 2:6 Matthew 24:31 Revelations 7:1 Daniel 7:2 Acts 27 Luke 6:46 John 3 -- No matter what comes your way, it had to get permission from God to come to you Genesis 1 Genesis 8 Ezekiel 37 Revelation 7:1-2 -- God sends us the winds to instruct, and guide us. -- North wind= God instructs us through, and judgement of God True love means that God wants you to become all you can be. Judgement comes because people reject mercy -- South wind= wind of temptation Acts 27:10 -- West wind= mercy and pity, compassion from God -- East wind= most uncomfortable of all winds. 1. The winds of affliction. 2. Opens up a way out of a situation 3. God uses the East wind to take us where we can not go ourselves Genesis 41
